Re:

How to Choose a Low-Cost S&P 500 Index Fund

A low expense ratio is only the starting point. Learn how to compare fund costs, account fit, ETF and mutual-fund mechanics, and index tracking.

Compare the fund’s current prospectus expense ratio, other costs, share class and minimums, availability at your brokerage, and how closely it has tracked the S&P 500 after costs. An expense ratio alone is not an all-in cost or a reliable “best fund” ranking. The examples below are U.S. products with dated fee information; check current fund documents and brokerage terms before investing.

What an S&P 500 index fund does

You cannot buy the S&P 500 index itself. An S&P 500 index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks to track the index; you buy shares in the fund. The fund may hold every constituent or use a sampling strategy. Its actual results can therefore differ from the index, and owning the fund retains the general market risks of the securities in the index. The SEC explains these basics in its Investor Bulletin on index funds.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Choosing a low-cost option is not simply a contest to find the smallest percentage on a provider page. You are comparing the fund’s ongoing operating expenses and other costs with its index exposure, trading mechanics, account eligibility, and tracking behavior. The right choice depends partly on how you plan to invest and where you hold the fund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by distinguishing the index from the investment product. The index is a benchmark; the fund is a portfolio designed to follow it. The fund’s prospectus describes its investment objective and strategy, including whether it typically holds all the index securities or uses sampling. Sampling can be an implementation choice, not necessarily a sign that the fund has abandoned its stated objective. Either way, the fund’s return is not guaranteed to match the index exactly.

An index fund is also not risk-free simply because its holdings follow a widely tracked benchmark. The fund retains the general risks of the securities in the S&P 500, and its value can fall when those securities decline. The selection question here is about comparing funds that seek similar exposure—not deciding whether that exposure is appropriate for every investor.

How to compare the costs that affect you

Start with the current prospectus expense ratio

The expense ratio is the annual operating expense expressed as a percentage of fund assets. It reduces the assets available to produce returns; it is not usually a separate bill sent to you. Check the current prospectus fee table, note the date of the figure, and confirm whether the provider labels it gross, net, or total. Fees and share classes can change, so an older comparison may no longer describe the current offer.

A small percentage can still be compared in dollars. If an investment stayed at $10,000 for a full year and the quoted fee remained unchanged, a 0.015% expense ratio would equate to about $1.50, 0.020% to $2, and 0.03% to $3 for that year. This is an illustration based on a constant balance, not a promise of the amount charged or of future returns. The difference between these expense ratios is modest in this example; do not assume it guarantees better performance.

The math is straightforward: multiply the balance by the expense ratio expressed as a decimal. For example, 0.03% is 0.0003, so $10,000 multiplied by 0.0003 is $3. In practice, the account balance changes with contributions, withdrawals, and investment returns, and expenses are reflected in fund performance rather than normally being collected as a separate annual invoice. The example is useful for putting a percentage in perspective, but it is not an exact forecast of your account’s charge.

When comparing provider figures, retain the label and date next to each number. “Gross,” “net,” and “total” are provider or prospectus descriptions, and should not be casually treated as interchangeable. The current prospectus fee table is the appropriate place to confirm the fund’s disclosed expenses and shareholder fees. If a product page shows a figure without an obvious date or category, verify it in the fund documents before using it in a comparison.

Look for costs outside the ratio

The prospectus fee table also reports shareholder fees. Depending on the fund, account, and transaction, brokerage commissions or transaction fees may apply. ETF investors should also consider the bid-ask spread when buying or selling. Trading costs and some securities-lending costs can affect returns without appearing in the expense ratio. The SEC’s July 23, 2025 bulletin on mutual fund and ETF fees describes why the prospectus ratio is only one part of the cost picture.

Match the comparison to your behavior. A fee on an occasional transaction may matter differently from a recurring charge on a regular purchase. Review the brokerage’s current schedule and the fund’s shareholder-fee disclosures for the account and share class you would actually use; do not assume the provider’s fund fee is the only cost you will encounter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an ETF, the bid-ask spread is the difference between the price a buyer is willing to pay and the price a seller is willing to accept. It matters when you transact because your execution price may be less favorable than the other side of the quote. The relevant spread can vary, and it is not the same thing as the annual expense ratio. Treat it as a transaction consideration, particularly if you expect to buy and sell, rather than adding it to the ratio as though both were charged in the same way.

Likewise, do not assume every possible cost applies to every account or purchase. Your brokerage’s terms, the share class, and the way you place transactions matter. The useful question is not “What costs can exist in theory?” but “Which disclosed costs could apply to this fund in my account, given how I plan to use it?” Review both the provider’s documents and the platform’s current fee schedule.

Interpret a lower fee sensibly

All else equal, lower costs leave more of the fund’s return with shareholders. The SEC puts it this way: “If the holdings of two funds have identical performance, the fund with the lower cost generally will generate higher returns for you.” That conditional matters: two funds do not necessarily have identical holdings implementation or performance, and fees alone do not settle the choice.

The expense ratio is still a useful first comparison because it is a recurring fund-level cost. If two options otherwise provide comparable exposure, are available on the same terms, and behave similarly against their benchmark, a lower ongoing cost is an advantage. But a few basis points should not be treated as a promise that one fund will outperform another over any particular period. Trading costs, tracking error, share-class terms, and account charges are also relevant.

What the dated provider examples show

The following are examples, not a complete survey of every eligible fund or a permanent cheapest-to-most-expensive ranking. These are U.S. products. The figures have different provider-stated or access dates, so compare them as dated snapshots and re-check each current prospectus before acting.

Fund Provider-stated fee information Minimum and other relevant details
Fidelity 500 Index Fund (FXAIX) 0.015% gross and net expense ratio, dated April 29, 2026; Fidelity fund research page, snapshot displayed September 10, 2026. The September 10, 2026 snapshot lists a $0 minimum to invest. The page says the fund normally invests at least 80% of assets in S&P 500 common stocks.
Schwab S&P 500 Index Fund (SWPPX) 0.020% total expense ratio on the Schwab Asset Management fund page, accessed October 9, 2026. The provider page lists no minimum initial investment. It reports holdings as of July 31, 2026; other fund characteristics have their own as-of dates.
Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) 0.03% expense ratio, dated April 28, 2026, on the Vanguard VOO page. Vanguard describes VOO as seeking to track the S&P 500 and as an ETF share class of Vanguard 500 Index Fund.
Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares (VFIAX) The Vanguard VFIAX page confirms the share class and S&P 500 tracking objective; a current fee figure is not stated in the cited page information here. Confirm the current fee and minimum from the fund’s current documents and verify that the share class is available for your account.

FXAIX has the lowest stated expense ratio among these three products with numeric figures, but that does not establish it as the lowest-cost option across the entire market or for every investor. The comparison does not standardize brokerage costs, ETF spreads, tracking results, or eligibility across platforms. A fund’s minimum, fee, and account access can change, and a low advertised fund expense ratio does not erase other transaction or account costs.

Read the table as a set of dated reference points, not as an apples-to-apples performance comparison. FXAIX and SWPPX are mutual funds, while VOO is an ETF. Their figures come with different provider-stated dates and labels, and the table does not establish what any reader would pay after applicable brokerage or transaction charges. It also does not show a uniform comparison of tracking differences over matching periods. Those details have to be checked for the exact account, share class, and transaction pattern under consideration.

VFIAX illustrates why a fund name or share class alone is not enough to complete a fee comparison. The cited Vanguard page confirms that it is Admiral Shares with an S&P 500 tracking objective, but the fee and minimum should be confirmed from current fund documents. Do not fill in a missing figure from memory or assume it has remained unchanged. For each candidate, assemble the same basic set of facts: objective, current fee and date, minimum and eligibility, transaction charges, and comparable tracking information.

These products are examples, not personalized recommendations. Provider descriptions and costs can change, and availability can depend on the brokerage and account. A product with a low published expense ratio may not be the most practical option if the share class is not available to you or if other costs change the comparison.

ETF or mutual fund: choose the transaction mechanics that fit

Both structures can provide S&P 500 exposure, but purchases and sales work differently. That difference affects how and when your order executes; it does not by itself establish which structure is cheaper or better for you. The SEC’s ETF Investor Bulletin explains the distinction.

Feature ETF Mutual fund
When shares trade Shares trade on an exchange during market hours. Purchases and redemptions generally use the next calculated net asset value (NAV).
Price at transaction Trades occur at market prices, which can differ from NAV. Transactions generally receive the next calculated NAV.
What to check Brokerage charges, bid-ask spread where relevant, platform access, and whether the trading process suits you. Share class, minimum, account eligibility, platform access, and any applicable shareholder or brokerage charges.

Consider your actual routine rather than assuming one wrapper is inherently cheaper. If you want to place orders during market hours at market prices, the ETF structure offers that trading mechanic. If your investing routine is based on mutual-fund purchases or redemptions at the next NAV, check the fund’s terms and whether your brokerage supports the share class. Availability of automatic investment features and the relevant account terms should be verified directly with the platform.

With an ETF, the market price at which a trade occurs may differ from the fund’s NAV. You can place an order during market hours, but the eventual execution price is not necessarily the NAV. That distinction is a reason to understand the mechanics before choosing—not evidence that ETFs are automatically cheaper or more expensive for your situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A mutual-fund purchase or redemption generally uses the next calculated NAV rather than an exchange price available at the moment you submit the order. That can suit an investor who prefers that transaction process, but the share class, fees, minimum, and brokerage support still need checking. Neither structure removes the need to look at total costs or the fund’s index-tracking objective.

Ask your brokerage practical questions before placing an order: Is this exact fund and share class available in the account? Does the platform list a minimum or transaction charge? Can you set up automatic investments if you want them? What rules apply to purchases and redemptions? The answers depend on the provider and account; verify them rather than assuming every fund works identically on every platform.

Check tracking, not just the name or fee

A fund’s name may suggest S&P 500 exposure, but its objective and strategy documents are the place to verify the benchmark it seeks to track and how it invests. Funds may hold all index constituents or sample them. Fees, trading costs, and tracking error can all contribute to a fund lagging its index.

Compare fund-versus-index returns over the same periods and use the same performance conventions. Look across consistent periods rather than selecting a single favorable window. A fund’s tracking difference—the gap between its return and the index return over a period—is useful context, but past tracking does not guarantee future results. Also check that the fund’s stated benchmark and the index return you are comparing are genuinely aligned; a difference in benchmark or period can make a comparison misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When making that comparison, avoid mixing a fund’s return for one period with an index figure for a different period. Check that the benchmark is the one the fund itself names and that the figures use comparable dates and conventions. Fund expenses and implementation can affect the fund’s result, so a return gap can be informative without isolating one single cause. Tracking history gives context about how the fund has followed its objective; it cannot tell you exactly how it will behave in the future.

  • Confirm the fund objective and benchmark in the prospectus.
  • Compare fund and index performance for matching periods.
  • Consider whether the figures reflect fund expenses and whether the index figure is directly comparable.
  • Use tracking history as evidence about implementation, not as a guarantee.

A close-sounding name is not a substitute for these checks. Confirm that the fund’s stated objective is to track the S&P 500 and read enough of the strategy description to understand how it intends to do so. Then compare the fund’s reported performance with the same index over identical periods. This process helps separate an actual tracking comparison from a comparison of unrelated dates, benchmarks, or product descriptions.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the account and transaction pattern. Identify the brokerage and account where you plan to invest, whether you expect recurring purchases or occasional trades, and whether you prefer exchange trading or mutual-fund transactions at NAV.
  2. Confirm S&P 500 exposure. Read each candidate’s objective, benchmark, and strategy in its current fund documents. Do not rely on a similar-sounding name alone.
  3. Record the dated expense ratio. Use the current prospectus fee table and note whether the figure is gross, net, or total. Do not treat a provider page’s older figure as current without checking.
  4. Add applicable costs. Review shareholder fees and your brokerage’s commissions or transaction charges. For an ETF, account for the bid-ask spread when relevant. Consider other disclosed costs that may affect returns even when they are not included in the expense ratio.
  5. Check share class and access. Confirm minimum investment, eligibility, and whether the exact share class is supported in your account. A fund that appears inexpensive but is unavailable or ineligible for your account is not a practical candidate.
  6. Compare tracking on consistent periods. Compare the fund with its stated index over matching periods and look for the size and consistency of the gap. Do not infer future outperformance from past results.
  7. Make the choice in context. Weigh costs, access, transaction mechanics, and tracking together. If two options are otherwise comparable for your account and behavior, the lower ongoing cost is a sensible advantage, but not a guarantee of a higher future return.

To make the comparison easier to audit, put the candidates side by side in a simple list or table. For every fund, record its objective and benchmark, the expense ratio and figure date, the share class, minimum and eligibility, applicable platform and transaction charges, and relevant tracking periods. Keep the source or document date with each entry. That prevents a fee from one date or share class being casually compared with a different product’s terms.

Then eliminate candidates that do not fit your account or desired transaction pattern before treating small fee differences as decisive. If your brokerage does not offer a particular share class, or its terms make that fund impractical for you, the published expense ratio alone does not settle the decision. Among the viable choices, compare all applicable costs and tracking with a consistent method. The final choice should reflect the account and use case you actually have—not a generic league table.

Common mistakes that distort the comparison

Treating one fee table as a complete price

The expense ratio is a fund-level operating-cost measure, not a complete statement of every charge an investor may face. Look at shareholder fees, platform charges, trading costs, and—in an ETF transaction—the spread where relevant.

Calling a dated snapshot “the cheapest”

The fee examples above are attached to particular dates and providers, and they do not form a comprehensive survey. A ranking based on those figures alone would ignore other funds, changing fees, brokerage terms, and differences in tracking. Use them as comparison points, not as proof of a market-wide winner.

Assuming the lowest ratio must outperform

A lower expense ratio is a real cost advantage when other factors are equal, but it cannot promise a superior return. Trading and implementation differences can affect tracking, and past results do not guarantee future performance.

Ignoring account or tax context

Share-class eligibility, brokerage support, transaction patterns, and tax context can alter which fund makes sense for a particular investor. The examples here do not establish individualized tax treatment. Confirm relevant account and tax details for your circumstances rather than treating a general fee comparison as personalized investment advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is not enough information in the provider examples to give individualized tax guidance or say which account type is preferable for a particular reader. Treat tax context as a factor to confirm for your own circumstances, not as something that can be inferred from a fund’s name or expense ratio. A general comparison of operating costs does not resolve those personal questions.

Comparing unlike figures

A fee figure with no clear date or label, a return over a different period, or a fund with a different benchmark can make a side-by-side comparison look more conclusive than it is. Record the relevant dates and verify that each figure refers to the fund and share class you could actually buy. If a detail is missing, confirm it from current documents instead of filling the gap with an assumption.

Confusing access with a recommendation

A fund appearing in a search result or on a provider page does not mean it is available on every brokerage platform or suitable for every account. Check platform access and eligibility directly. The examples are intended to show how to compare dated facts, not to rank products for a specific investor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which S&P 500 index fund has the lowest fees?

There is no complete market-wide ranking here. Among the dated examples with numeric figures, FXAIX lists a 0.015% gross and net expense ratio dated April 29, 2026; SWPPX lists 0.020% on a page accessed October 9, 2026; and VOO lists 0.03% dated April 28, 2026. These are not a comprehensive survey, and the expense ratio is not the complete cost for every account. Check current prospectuses, share-class eligibility, brokerage charges, and other applicable costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I choose an S&P 500 ETF or mutual fund?

The structures have different transaction mechanics, but neither is automatically cheaper or better. ETF shares trade on an exchange during market hours at market prices that can differ from NAV. Mutual-fund purchases and redemptions generally use the next calculated NAV. Compare the fund’s costs, share class, platform access, and the transaction process you prefer.

What does an S&P 500 fund expense ratio include?

The expense ratio is the annual operating expense expressed as a percentage of fund assets. The current prospectus fee table also reports shareholder fees, but other costs—such as brokerage charges, ETF bid-ask spreads, trading costs, or some securities-lending costs—may affect returns without appearing in the ratio. Check the prospectus and your brokerage’s terms.

Can an S&P 500 index fund underperform the index?

Yes. Fees, trading costs, and tracking error can contribute to a fund lagging its index. Compare fund and index returns over matching periods and make sure the benchmark and dates align. Past tracking results do not guarantee future performance.

Does a $0 fund minimum mean I can buy it anywhere?

No. A provider’s listed minimum does not establish availability on every brokerage platform or eligibility for every account. Confirm that the exact fund and share class are supported by your brokerage, and check any platform or transaction charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Choose an S&P 500 fund by comparing current, dated prospectus costs alongside applicable transaction charges, share-class eligibility, brokerage access, trading mechanics, and consistent tracking results. The examples show how to start that comparison, not a universal cheapest-fund ranking. Recheck current provider documents and your platform’s terms before investing.
