How to Choose a Financial Advisor: A Practical U.S. Buyer’s Guide

A practical U.S. guide to choosing a financial advisor, including advisor types, fiduciary standards, compensation, background checks, Form CRS and ADV, interview questions, red flags, and a hiring scorecard.

The right financial advisor is not necessarily the one with the most impressive title, the lowest advertised fee, or the highest recent return. Choose the professional who matches your actual problem, clearly states whether they are acting as an investment adviser, broker, or both, explains every source of compensation, has relevant experience, passes independent background checks, and puts the relationship terms in writing.

This U.S.-focused guide explains how to decide whether you need an advisor, compare service and compensation models, verify an individual and firm, review required disclosures, interview finalists, and avoid common mistakes. Regulatory and licensing information is labeled as current as of August 9, 2026; state-specific rules and registration requirements can differ.

1. Decide what problem you need to solve

Start with the problem, not the advisor directory. Investment management, comprehensive financial planning, tax planning, retirement-income advice, insurance, estate coordination, and debt counseling are different services. One professional may offer several of them, while another may only manage a portfolio.

A financial planner may address saving, investments, insurance, taxes, retirement, or estate planning, but services vary widely. Someone using a broad title may recommend only a narrow range of products or provide only investment management. The SEC’s Investor.gov glossary explains why the title alone is not enough.

When professional help may be valuable

  • You are approaching retirement and need an income and withdrawal strategy.
  • You received an inheritance, sold a business, or experienced another major liquidity event.
  • You hold a concentrated stock position, restricted stock, private-company equity, or employee stock options.
  • You need to coordinate investments with taxes, insurance, estate documents, charitable giving, or business succession.
  • Your family situation involves special-needs planning, elder care, a financially vulnerable household member, or complicated beneficiary decisions.
  • You struggle to maintain a plan or make rational decisions during market volatility.
  • You need accountability and coordination more than you need someone to select investments.

When ongoing full-service management may be unnecessary

  • Your finances are straightforward, you use diversified low-cost investments, and you can maintain an appropriate allocation independently.
  • You need a one-time plan, second opinion, retirement projection, or help with one decision.
  • Your main need is tax-return preparation, legal drafting, debt counseling, or insurance—not portfolio management.
  • A target-date fund, employer-plan resources, self-directed brokerage account, or robo-advisor adequately addresses your situation.

Important distinction: investment management is not comprehensive financial planning. A firm can manage a portfolio without preparing tax returns, drafting estate documents, giving legal advice, or making insurance recommendations.

2. Match the advisor to the job

Your primary need Professionals to consider What to confirm
Portfolio construction and ongoing management Registered investment adviser, broker advisory program, or robo-advisor Investment menu, account types, monitoring, rebalancing, tax features, human access, and total cost
Comprehensive financial planning CFP® professional, fee-only planner, or planning firm Whether planning is genuinely comprehensive and whether investment management is included or billed separately
One-time plan or second opinion Hourly or flat-fee planner Written deliverables, implementation support, follow-up, and the point at which the engagement ends
Retirement income CFP® professional or retirement specialist Social Security, Medicare, tax coordination, withdrawal sequencing, longevity risk, and required distributions
Tax planning Advisor with tax expertise, working with a CPA or tax attorney when appropriate Whether the professional provides tax planning, tax-return preparation, or neither
Estate planning Financial planner coordinating with an estate attorney Who drafts or updates legal documents; a planner generally should not replace an attorney
Insurance or annuity purchase Insurance-licensed professional, ideally coordinated with a fiduciary planner Commissions, surrender charges, replacement recommendations, insurer affiliations, liquidity, and alternatives considered
Basic automated investing Robo-advisor or hybrid service Questionnaire limits, human access, customization, tax-loss harvesting, account availability, and all-in fees
Debt, budgeting, or cash-flow problems Financial counselor, planner, or debt specialist Whether investment advice addresses the primary problem or merely adds cost

3. Compare the main types of financial professionals

Registered investment adviser and investment adviser representative

A registered investment adviser, often abbreviated RIA, generally provides advice about buying, selling, or holding investments. The firm may monitor portfolios, provide financial planning, manage investments with or without discretion, or offer a combination of services. The individual who provides advice may be an investment adviser representative, or IAR.

Ask whether the firm is registered with the SEC or a state regulator, whether the individual is registered as an IAR, and whether the person is acting as an investment adviser for your specific account. An adviser may charge an asset-based fee, but hourly, flat, subscription, and other arrangements are also possible. See Investor.gov’s overview of investment advisers.

Broker-dealer representative

A broker traditionally provides transaction-oriented services, although many broker-dealers now offer advisory accounts, ongoing monitoring, and financial planning. Compensation can include commissions, markups, transaction compensation, bonuses, or other incentives.

When a broker-dealer makes a retail recommendation involving a security, investment strategy, account type, or rollover, Regulation Best Interest applies. That is an important investor protection, but it is not identical to the investment-adviser fiduciary standard.

Dual registrant

A dual registrant or dual-hatted professional operates in both brokerage and advisory capacities. The same person can act as an adviser for one account and as a broker for another. That can change the services, fees, conflicts, paperwork, and conduct obligations that apply.

Do not accept a general statement such as we are fiduciaries as the complete answer. Ask:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For this specific account and recommendation, are you acting as a broker, an investment adviser, or both?

The SEC’s Form CRS investor resource discusses the broker-adviser distinction and dual registrants.

Fee-only planner

Fee-only generally means compensation comes from client-paid fees rather than sales-related compensation. NAPFA defines fee-only as compensation paid solely by the client, with neither the advisor nor a related party receiving compensation contingent on the purchase or sale of a financial product. Its standards page provides the organization’s definition.

Fee-only does not automatically mean competent, inexpensive, independent, or conflict-free. An asset-based fee, proprietary custodian, referral arrangement, or incentive to gather assets can still matter. The label reduces certain product-sales conflicts, but you still need to examine the actual agreement and disclosures.

Fee-based or fee-and-commission professional

Fee-based is frequently misunderstood. For CFP® professionals, CFP Board states that fee-based is equivalent to fee-and-commission and must not be used in a way that implies fee-only compensation. The professional should disclose whether they receive both client fees and commissions.

Ask exactly who pays the professional, when payment occurs, whether affiliates are paid, and whether compensation depends on recommending a product. Do not choose based on the label alone. See CFP Board’s guidance on fee-only and fee-based compensation.

Robo-advisor

A robo-advisor uses an online questionnaire and automated portfolio-management process. It may be suitable for a relatively simple portfolio and a client who is comfortable with digital communication. It can be less suitable when you need detailed tax, estate, business, insurance, retirement-income, or behavioral coaching.

Review how much information the questionnaire collects, whether a human can help, which account types are available, how portfolios are customized and rebalanced, whether tax-loss harvesting applies to your account, and the total fee. The SEC’s robo-advisor bulletin explains these limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Understand fiduciary status accurately

Fiduciary is important, but it is not a magic word. Different professionals may have different legal duties, and a person may act under different standards for different services or accounts.

Investment advisers

The SEC describes an investment adviser’s fiduciary duty as including a duty of care and a duty of loyalty. The adviser should have a reasonable understanding of your objectives and should provide advice in your best interest. Conflicts should be eliminated where possible or fully and fairly disclosed in a way that permits informed consent.

Broker-dealers

Under Regulation Best Interest, a broker-dealer must have a reasonable basis to believe a recommendation is in the particular retail customer’s best interest and does not place the broker’s interests ahead of the customer’s interests. The rule covers recommendations involving securities transactions, investment strategies, account types, and rollovers. The SEC describes the distinctions in its staff bulletin on standards of conduct and conflicts.

CFP® professionals

CFP Board requires CFP® professionals to act as fiduciaries when providing financial advice. CFP Board guidance states that the obligation can apply to one-time advice, although a one-time engagement does not automatically create an ongoing duty to monitor your finances after the advice ends. Review the CFP Board Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct and related guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the candidate:

Will you act as a fiduciary when providing advice to me? On which accounts, for which services, and for how long? Will that obligation be stated in the engagement agreement?

Do not assume every financial professional is legally required to be a fiduciary, and do not assume a fiduciary has no conflicts. The SEC expressly recognizes that both investment advisers and broker-dealers can have conflicts of interest.

5. Compare compensation in dollars

Do not compare only the headline percentage or monthly subscription. Ask for an annual dollar estimate for your actual account and proposed investments.

Compensation model How it works Trade-off to consider
Assets under management, or AUM A percentage of managed assets, usually assessed periodically May be expensive for a large, simple portfolio or when the advisor adds little service; assets outside the account may not be covered
Hourly You pay for time used Useful for limited questions, but implementation and monitoring may be separate
Flat or project fee A fixed price for a defined plan or engagement Predictable, but the scope, deliverables, and follow-up must be explicit
Subscription or retainer A recurring monthly, quarterly, or annual fee Can work for smaller accounts, but may be expensive relative to the assets or help received
Commission Compensation when a product is sold or transaction occurs Can create product and transaction incentives
Fee-and-commission A combination of client fees and sales-related compensation Requires detailed disclosure of who pays what and when
Wrap fee A single account-based fee may bundle advisory and transaction services May suit active trading but can be costly for a buy-and-hold investor
Performance fee Compensation linked to investment performance Complex and subject to eligibility and regulatory restrictions; review carefully

The SEC notes that asset-based rates may be stated as annual percentages such as 0.25%, 1%, or 2%, but neither the percentage nor the service package is standardized. Its guidance on advisory fees also illustrates how a subscription can be disproportionately expensive for a small account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Simple dollar comparisons

  • 1% of $300,000 is $3,000 per year.
  • 0.75% of $500,000 is $3,750 per year.
  • 0.25% of $1 million is $2,500 per year.
  • $150 per month is $1,800 per year.
  • $3 per month is $36 per year. On a $500 account, that equals more than 7% of the starting balance.

These are arithmetic examples, not recommendations or market-rate judgments. A higher fee may be reasonable for complex planning and substantial service; a lower fee may still be poor value if the service is narrow or the investment costs are high.

Request the all-in cost

Ask the finalist to estimate the annual cost, in dollars, for the exact proposed portfolio. Include:

  • Planning and investment-management fees.
  • Fund and ETF expense ratios.
  • Trading, transaction, brokerage, platform, and custody charges.
  • Sales loads, 12b-1 fees, revenue sharing, and markups.
  • Cash-sweep economics and fees on cash or margin.
  • Commissions on insurance and annuities.
  • Annuity surrender charges and other liquidity costs.
  • Tax-preparation, legal, or outside-professional fees.
  • Referral or solicitor compensation.
  • Transfer, termination, or account-closing costs.
  • Fees associated with alternatives, private funds, or proprietary products.

Potential conflicts can arise from compensation, AUM, commissions, markups, cash programs, revenue sharing, proprietary products, bonuses, sales contests, and referral arrangements. Ask how each applies to you. The SEC discusses these sources in its conflicts guidance. For investment and product expenses, also review the SEC’s investor bulletin on fees and expenses.

6. Look beyond credentials

CFP® certification

CFP Board describes CFP® certification as built around education, examination, experience, and ethics requirements. It can be particularly relevant for comprehensive personal financial planning, but it does not replace checking registration, compensation, disciplinary history, experience, or actual services.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the CFP Board verification tool to check current or former CFP® status and public CFP Board disciplinary information. CFP Board notes that consumers may need FINRA, SEC, state, or other sources for additional information.

Series 65, Series 66, and Series 7

The Series 65 is the NASAA Investment Adviser Law Examination for investment adviser representatives. The Series 66 can qualify an individual as if they passed the Series 63 and Series 65, but the person must also have passed the Series 7 and satisfy applicable state requirements. Passing an exam is not the same as being registered, experienced, independent, or subject to every fiduciary obligation a client may assume.

NASAA provides information through its exam page and exam FAQ. Confirm the person’s current registration rather than relying on a résumé or exam list.

Other designations and titles

Titles such as financial advisor, financial planner, wealth manager, and investment consultant may be generic job titles rather than specific credentials or licenses. FINRA maintains a designation database, but it does not endorse the credentials listed there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For any designation, check:

  • Who issued it.
  • The required education, examination, and experience.
  • Whether continuing education is required.
  • Whether the organization has a complaint or discipline process.
  • Whether the credential can be independently verified.

7. Verify the individual and the firm

Perform the checks yourself before opening an account or sending money. Check both the person and the firm; a clean record for one does not establish the record of the other.

  1. Start at Investor.gov. Use the SEC’s search tools for investment professionals and firms. The result can help identify registration information and available background data.
  2. Search IAPD for investment advisers. The Investment Adviser Public Disclosure database provides firm information, registration status, Form ADV filings, business details, and certain disciplinary disclosures.
  3. Search FINRA BrokerCheck for brokers. BrokerCheck provides free reports on FINRA-registered brokerage firms and professionals, including registrations, employment history, licenses, complaints, arbitrations, regulatory actions, and other disclosures.
  4. Check the relevant state regulator. State securities regulators can provide additional registration and complaint information, and state requirements can vary. FINRA’s Ask and Check guidance and Investor.gov’s state-regulator resource explain where to look.
  5. Verify CFP® status separately. Use CFP Board’s verification tool even if the person also appears in IAPD or BrokerCheck.

How to read a complaint or disclosure

A complaint is an allegation, not automatically proof of misconduct. Review the number of complaints, the similarity of allegations, dates, employment history, product involved, and resolution. Determine whether a complaint was denied, dismissed, settled, or resulted in an award, and whether the firm or individual paid money. Look for patterns rather than treating every complaint identically. FINRA explains how to read customer complaints.

A clean public record is not a guarantee of quality. BrokerCheck does not reveal every possible civil, criminal, employment, or personal event, and what appears depends on reporting requirements. Review its limitations.

8. Request and read the documents before hiring

Form CRS

Form CRS is a short relationship summary for retail investors. It addresses:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Services.
  • Fees and costs.
  • Conflicts of interest.
  • Standard of conduct.
  • Reportable legal or disciplinary history.
  • Questions to ask.
  • Where to find additional information.

Obtain Form CRS from each finalist and compare the same headings side by side. A concise document should make differences easier to identify, not eliminate the need for further questions.

Form ADV Part 2A

The adviser brochure should explain advisory services, fees and compensation, other fees and expenses, strategies and risks, disciplinary information, other business activities and affiliations, brokerage practices, account reviews, custody, client referrals, and other compensation. The SEC’s Form ADV bulletin explains Parts 1, 2A, and 2B.

Form ADV Part 2B

The brochure supplement concerns the specific supervised person who will provide advice. It generally covers education, business experience, disciplinary information, other business activities, additional compensation, and supervision. Read the supplement for the actual person you will work with, not only the firm brochure.

Advisory agreement or engagement letter

The contract should state:

  • The scope of services and accounts covered.
  • Whether financial planning is included.
  • Whether the advisor has discretion to trade without prior approval.
  • How the fee is calculated, billed, and changed.
  • Minimums and what happens if your assets fall below them.
  • The term, renewal, termination rights, refunds, and fee proration.
  • The custodian and who owns the account.
  • Whether affiliated or proprietary products may be used.
  • Who is responsible for taxes, legal work, insurance, and implementation.

Online agreements can appear as a simple checkbox, but they may contain important legal terms. Read the agreement before accepting it, not after money has moved.

9. Interview at least three finalists consistently

Use the same questions for every candidate. This prevents a polished presentation from overshadowing important differences.

Services and fit

  1. What specific problems do you solve for clients like me?
  2. Do you provide comprehensive planning, investment management, or both?
  3. Which services are included in the quoted fee?
  4. Which services are handled by outside professionals?
  5. Do you regularly work with clients with my age, assets, income, goals, tax situation, or complexity?
  6. Who will actually advise me day to day?
  7. What happens if that person leaves the firm?
  8. How often will we meet, and how quickly do you typically respond?

Legal capacity and fiduciary duty

  1. Are you a registered investment adviser, broker, insurance professional, or dual registrant?
  2. For each account and recommendation, which capacity will you use?
  3. Will you act as a fiduciary when providing advice to me?
  4. Is that obligation stated in the engagement agreement?
  5. Does it cover one-time advice, ongoing advice, investment management, insurance, and rollovers?

Compensation and conflicts

  1. How are you and your firm paid?
  2. Do you receive commissions, bonuses, referral fees, revenue sharing, or other compensation?
  3. Do affiliates or related parties receive compensation from my investments?
  4. What is my estimated total annual cost in dollars?
  5. Are there account, fund, trading, custody, platform, or termination fees?
  6. Do you recommend proprietary products or a limited product menu?
  7. Do you receive compensation for recommending another professional?
  8. Is the fee negotiable?
  9. What happens to the fee if my assets fall below the minimum?

Investment process

  1. What is your investment philosophy?
  2. How do you set asset allocation?
  3. How do you use low-cost funds, individual securities, alternatives, annuities, or insurance?
  4. How often do you rebalance?
  5. How do you manage taxes across taxable and retirement accounts?
  6. How do you handle concentrated stock, employer stock, options, or illiquid investments?
  7. What risks could cause this strategy to underperform?
  8. How do you define and measure success?

Operations and security

  1. Who is the custodian of my assets?
  2. Will statements come directly from the custodian?
  3. Can you withdraw money, or only manage investments?
  4. What is the procedure for deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and account closure?
  5. What happens if I terminate the relationship?
  6. How is my personal information protected?

10. Evaluate trade-offs, not just credentials

Rank each finalist on a written scorecard:

Criterion What a strong answer looks like
Problem fit The advisor solves the need you actually identified, rather than selling a standard portfolio
Legal capacity The role is clear for each account and recommendation
Fiduciary commitment The obligation, services, accounts, and duration are specific and documented
Total cost You can calculate the annual dollar cost, including product and account expenses
Conflicts Conflicts are eliminated, mitigated, or clearly explained—not hidden behind a label
Relevant expertise The advisor regularly handles situations similar to yours
Investment philosophy The approach is understandable, evidence-based, and compatible with your risk tolerance
Planning depth The service covers broader planning when you need more than investment selection
Access and continuity You know who will serve you and what happens during staff turnover
Custody and operations Account ownership, statements, transfers, withdrawals, and security procedures are clear
Minimums and scalability The relationship remains practical if your assets rise or fall
Personal fit You can ask difficult questions, disagree, and receive a clear answer without pressure

There is no universally best balance. Human advice may cost more but provide valuable judgment and coordination. Automation may be efficient for a straightforward portfolio but limited for tax, estate, business, insurance, or behavioral issues. A solo advisor may offer continuity, while a team may provide broader expertise and backup. A local firm may suit your preferences, while a virtual firm may offer more specialized knowledge. An affiliated firm may integrate banking, lending, or insurance services but may also have proprietary-product conflicts.

11. Pay special attention to common edge cases

Small account

An AUM advisor may have a minimum or may not provide enough value for a small portfolio. Compare hourly, project, subscription, robo-advisor, employer-plan, and self-directed alternatives. Calculate any recurring fee as a percentage of your actual balance.

Retirement rollover

A rollover is not merely a portfolio decision. Regulation Best Interest expressly covers recommendations to roll over or transfer assets between account types. Request a written comparison of the existing plan and proposed account, including fees, investment choices, services, creditor protections, tax effects, withdrawal rules, and other account features. Be especially cautious if the recommendation creates a commission or larger AUM fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Insurance or annuity recommendation

Ask whether the professional is insurance-licensed, what commission or trail compensation is paid, whether the product is proprietary, what surrender charges and liquidity restrictions apply, which alternatives were considered, and whether the recommendation is being made as an adviser or broker.

Tax or estate planning

Separate tax planning from tax-return preparation and estate coordination from legal drafting. A financial planner may model tax consequences and coordinate with a CPA or estate attorney, but that does not mean the planner prepares your return or drafts your will, trust, power of attorney, or other legal documents.

Elder or vulnerable investor

If appropriate, involve a trusted contact or family member with the client’s permission. Use powers of attorney carefully and independently verify unusual withdrawal requests, beneficiary changes, or sudden instructions. Ask the firm how it handles suspected financial exploitation.

Concentrated stock or business owner

Look for demonstrated experience with restricted stock, employee stock options, private-company equity, business-sale proceeds, estimated taxes, charitable gifting, succession planning, liquidity constraints, and diversification decisions. A general investment model may not address these issues adequately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternatives, crypto, private funds, or complex products

Require clear explanations of liquidity, valuation, fees, leverage, custody, conflicts, eligibility, worst-case outcomes, and exit restrictions. A credential or fiduciary label does not eliminate the need for product-level due diligence.

12. Recognize red flags and know how to recover

  • Guaranteed or unusually high returns: Treat the promise as a serious warning sign. Verify registration before taking any further step.
  • Pressure or urgency: You should have time to review disclosures and compare alternatives.
  • Refusal to provide documents: Do not proceed without Form CRS, Form ADV when applicable, fee information, and the agreement.
  • Unclear compensation: Request a written annual dollar estimate that includes investment and account expenses.
  • Vague fiduciary claim: Ask for the capacity, accounts, services, duration, and contractual language.
  • Mandatory proprietary products: Ask why the product is required, what alternatives exist, and who receives compensation.
  • Immediate rollover recommendation: Stop and request a written comparison with your existing account.
  • Requests to send money directly to the advisor: Confirm account ownership, custodian, and payment procedures independently. Client assets and statements should be handled through clearly identified account arrangements.
  • Inability to explain risk, fees, or termination: A complicated strategy is not a substitute for a comprehensible explanation.

If an advisor will not provide disclosures, do not proceed. If a disciplinary record contains complaints, examine the allegations, dates, resolutions, and patterns rather than relying on the count alone. If performance disappoints, review the agreed benchmark, asset allocation, risk level, taxes, fees, and whether the portfolio stayed consistent with the plan before judging a recent return.

If the relationship is not working, reread the termination provision, request a complete fee and holdings statement, confirm transfer costs, and obtain important records before closing or transferring accounts. If the advisor leaves the firm, review successor-advisor, transfer, termination, and fee-proration provisions. Confirm that you—not the advisor—control account ownership and custodian access.

13. What to do after hiring

  1. Keep copies of Form CRS, Form ADV, the engagement letter, fee schedule, investment policy statement, and account-opening documents.
  2. Confirm that statements come from the identified custodian and that account ownership and beneficiaries are correct.
  3. Compare actual fees with the estimate you received.
  4. Confirm that the portfolio, risk level, asset allocation, and account types match the written plan.
  5. Review goals, cash needs, taxes, beneficiaries, and risk tolerance after major life changes.
  6. Ask how often the advisor updates the plan and reviews the relationship.
  7. Recheck registration and disclosures when the firm, advisor, compensation, strategy, or ownership changes.
  8. Know how to terminate the relationship and move assets before you need to do so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a CFP® professional automatically a fiduciary?

CFP Board requires CFP® professionals to act as fiduciaries when providing financial advice. Ask which services and accounts are covered, whether the duty applies to one-time advice or ongoing advice, and whether the obligation is stated in the engagement agreement. The designation does not guarantee low fees, investment results, or personal compatibility.

What is the difference between fee-only and fee-based?

Fee-only generally means compensation comes solely from client-paid fees, with no product-sale compensation to the advisor or related party. Fee-based is commonly used for a combination of fees and commissions; CFP Board says it must not be presented as fee-only. Ask for every compensation source in writing.

Is fee-only always cheaper?

No. Fee-only reduces certain sales-compensation conflicts, but an asset-based, hourly, project, or subscription fee can still be expensive relative to the service you need. Compare the total annual dollar cost, including fund, custody, trading, platform, and product expenses.

How much money do I need to hire a financial advisor?

There is no universal minimum. AUM firms may impose asset minimums, while hourly, flat-fee, subscription, robo-advisor, and employer-plan options may work for smaller accounts. Choose the least expensive model that adequately solves your actual problem rather than paying for ongoing management you do not need.

Should I use a robo-advisor?

A robo-advisor may fit a straightforward portfolio when you are comfortable with online communication and automated decisions. Review its questionnaire, human-support options, account availability, customization, rebalancing, tax features, and all-in fee. Complex tax, estate, business, insurance, retirement-income, or behavioral needs may call for a human specialist.

What is the difference between a financial advisor and a broker?

The titles overlap in everyday use. A broker generally operates through a broker-dealer and may receive transaction-related compensation; an investment adviser generally provides ongoing investment advice and may charge a fee. Some professionals are dual registrants. Ask which capacity applies to each account and recommendation.

Can a financial advisor prepare my taxes or draft my will?

Not necessarily. A planner may provide tax planning or coordinate with a CPA and may coordinate estate planning with an attorney, but tax-return preparation and legal document drafting are separate services. Confirm the professional’s exact qualifications and scope.

What if a prospective advisor has a complaint on BrokerCheck?

A complaint is an allegation, not automatically proof of misconduct. Review the allegation, date, product, resolution, amount paid, employment history, and whether similar disclosures form a pattern. A clean record also is not a guarantee of quality.

Can I hire an advisor for only one financial decision?

Yes. Hourly or flat-fee advice can be appropriate for a retirement projection, rollover comparison, equity-compensation decision, inheritance, or second opinion. Confirm the written deliverables, implementation help, follow-up period, and when the engagement ends.

The Bottom Line

Choose the advisor who can solve your specific problem, explain the legal capacity and fiduciary commitment for each service, disclose every source of compensation, and provide a total cost you can calculate. Verify both the person and firm through Investor.gov, IAPD, BrokerCheck, the state regulator, and CFP Board when applicable. Then read Form CRS, Form ADV, and the contract before hiring. A clear written relationship is more valuable than a vague promise, impressive title, or recent performance claim.
