There is no single best option for every small business, and the available product pages do not establish which provider has the best customer support.
What counts as a debit card machine?
The phrase can describe quite different equipment. A phone-paired reader takes payments through a compatible smartphone or tablet. A standalone reader can operate without a separate phone. A countertop or handheld terminal may add functions such as receipt printing or point-of-sale (POS) tools. Those differences affect how a device fits into your checkout routine.
How to choose a machine for your business
Match the device to where you sell
- Fixed counter: A countertop terminal may suit a checkout that stays in one place. A payment-only model can work if you do not need menus, inventory, or order management on the device.
- Tables, events, or mobile visits: A handheld or standalone model can avoid dependence on a separate phone. A phone-paired reader is another option if you have a compatible phone available when taking payment.
- Several sales settings: Check whether the provider’s hardware and software can support each setting. A device suitable for a counter may not offer the same workflow on the move.
Check the payment methods and POS functions
Confirm that the exact model sold in your market accepts the ways your customers pay, such as chip cards, contactless cards, and mobile wallets. Features vary by product. Also decide whether you need only payment acceptance or functions such as printed receipts, inventory, menus, and order management. Do not assume a terminal includes a full POS system just because it has a screen.
Compare total cost, not just the device

#1 Best Overall
- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
- Hardware purchase price or rental
- Transaction fees and any monthly plan charge
- Contract duration and any other clearly disclosed charges
- Payout terms that affect when you receive funds
A low-cost reader can still have ongoing fees, and a hardware price does not tell you the full cost of accepting payments. Some provider fees may be quote-based rather than published.
Assess customer support separately
Before choosing a provider, check its local support channels and operating hours, then look for comparable evidence about service quality and response times. The product and help pages cited here identify support resources but do not provide comparative response-time or customer-satisfaction data, so they cannot support a claim that one provider has “excellent” support.

Examples of machines and providers
The examples below illustrate different device types; they are not a universal ranking. The product descriptions and listed prices come from the providers themselves, not independent product tests. Prices and terms are market-specific and may change.
| Provider and example | Device type and stated features | Listed price or fee | Fit to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| SumUp Solo Lite (UK) | Phone-paired reader; the UK page says it pairs with a smartphone. | £25 on SumUp’s UK product page. | Consider if you have a compatible phone available for taking payments. |
| SumUp Solo (UK) | Standalone reader with built-in mobile data and a charging station, according to SumUp’s UK page. | £79 on SumUp’s UK product page. | Consider if you want a reader that does not rely on a phone connection. |
| SumUp Terminal (UK) | Handheld device with a printer and POS features, according to SumUp’s UK page. | £169 on that product page; SumUp’s August 2026 UK comparison lists £135 instead. | Check the live local price before buying because SumUp’s UK pages show different prices. |
| SumUp Standard and POS Plus (US) | Plan examples on SumUp’s US comparison; the page lists an in-person transaction rate. | Standard: $0 per month; POS Plus: $49 per month; 2.6% plus $0.10 per in-person payment. | Use these figures only as the US page’s offer, not as UK pricing or universal fees. |
| Square Reader for contactless and chip (US) | Reader pairs with a separate device, according to Square. | $59 on Square’s US hardware page. | Consider if you are comfortable using a paired device for checkout. |
| Square Terminal (US) | Compact countertop device that takes payments and prints receipts, according to Square. | $299 on Square’s US hardware page. | Consider for a counter workflow where payment acceptance and printed receipts are useful. |
| Clover Compact | Countertop terminal that Clover says accepts major debit and credit cards, mobile wallets, EMV chip, contactless, and gift cards. Clover says it lacks menu, inventory, and order management; a swivel stand is optional. | Not stated on the cited Clover product page. | Consider if you need counter-based payment acceptance without those POS functions. |
SumUp’s UK product page and its August 2026 comparison give different Terminal prices. Treat the discrepancy as a reason to confirm the current price directly, not to assume either figure is still available. The US and UK examples above are separate regional offers and should not be combined.

Questions to settle before you buy
- Where will you take payments? Identify whether you need a fixed counter, handheld device, phone-paired reader, or a combination.
- Which payments must it accept? Verify the supported methods for the exact model and country, rather than relying on a provider’s general product description.
- What must the checkout system do? List essential POS needs, such as receipts, inventory, or order management, and check whether the device or a separate system provides them.
- What will it cost over time? Compare hardware, transaction fees, monthly charges, contract terms, and payout conditions in your market.
- How can you get help? Confirm local support hours and channels, and seek service-quality evidence before treating support claims as a deciding advantage.
Are card-machine payments secure?
The provider pages cited here describe products and supported payment methods but do not provide enough comparable security detail to evaluate one machine as safer than another. Check the provider’s current security information and the exact device and payment methods you plan to use before deciding.
