Choose a welcome bonus only when its eligible-spending requirement fits purchases you already expect to make during the offer period—and you can pay the card’s statement balance in full. If earning it would make you spend more or borrow, skip it. The offer’s current terms determine the threshold, deadline, exclusions and eligibility rules.
How much do you need to spend to earn a welcome bonus?
There is no single spending amount: each offer sets its own minimum eligible spend and time limit. You earn the bonus only after meeting those conditions, and some offers may also require enrollment or that the account remain in good standing. Check the terms attached to the particular offer rather than relying on an example or an old promotion.
To judge whether a threshold is manageable, compare it with ordinary expenses you already plan to pay by card during the stated period. Include only purchases that the offer counts, and account for when the spending period begins and ends. A necessary upcoming expense may help you meet a threshold, but it does not change the offer’s exclusions or your repayment obligation.
Check these terms before applying
- Minimum spend and deadline: Record the required amount, the length of the spending window and when that window starts.
- Eligible purchases: The offer may exclude transactions such as balance transfers, cash advances or fees. Definitions vary, so read the offer-specific terms.
- Eligibility: New-customer rules or restrictions based on previous accounts or bonuses may apply. Confirm that you qualify under the current offer.
- Reward and redemption: Identify whether the bonus is cash back, a statement credit, points or miles, and how you would actually use it. Redemption options differ; do not assume a universal cash value for points or miles.
- Other card terms: Review the annual fee and relevant account terms in the offer itself, not just the advertised bonus.
- Repayment: Make sure the planned purchases fit your normal budget and that you can pay the statement balance in full.
Offers can change, and the application terms for the offer you see control. Chase’s general explanations cover common offer features and exclusions, but they are not substitutes for the terms of a specific card: Chase’s guide to welcome bonus offers and its explanation of sign-up offers.

Compare offers by fit, not headline size
For each card you are already considering, write down the minimum eligible spend, spending window, exclusions, eligibility rules, reward type, realistic redemption and annual fee. Then ask whether the required purchases fit your plans and budget without changing your habits. A larger advertised reward may be a worse fit if it requires spending you would not otherwise do.
Value points or miles according to a specific redemption you expect to use; without a particular redemption scenario, a fixed dollar figure is not reliable. Also consider the card as a whole, not just the introductory reward. A bonus does not guarantee approval or receipt of the reward, and applying may involve a hard inquiry.

When to walk away
Do not buy things solely to reach a threshold, manufacture spending, or carry a balance to earn a bonus. Interest, fees and debt can outweigh the reward. Chase’s issuer-authored guidance puts the trade-off plainly: “If the reason you want to sign-up is to get the rewards, make sure that the sign-up offer won’t cause you to accumulate more debt in the process.” Chase, “What is a Credit Card Sign-Up Offer?”
