To get face-to-face help from the IRS, use the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) Office Locator, check that the office handles your issue, then call the appointment number listed for that location. TAC visits are by appointment; do not count on being seen as a walk-in. Before traveling, confirm the office’s hours, services and appointment details.

Arrive on time and check in. IRS guidance warns that an appointment may be canceled if you are more than 15 minutes late and have not checked in. Silence your phone while at the office.
What to bring to an IRS appointment
Bring a current government-issued photo ID and a second original form of ID, along with your SSN or ITIN and records related to the issue. If you filed a return for the tax year in question, bring a copy.

Examples of additional identification listed by the IRS include a state identification card, passport, Social Security card, car title, voter registration card, mortgage statement, lease, utility bill showing your current address, birth certificate and certain school records. A tribal membership card may serve as an additional ID, but the IRS says it is not a valid substitute for a driver’s license or passport.
-
For an ITIN application or renewal, TAC staff can review original documents and certified copies from the issuing agencies. The IRS says the documents are returned at the end of the appointment, and this review is by appointment.

Professional telephone interpretation in many languages is available at every TAC. Deaf or hard-of-hearing visitors who need a sign-language interpreter can call TTY/TDD 800-829-4059 to make an appointment.
Check whether you can resolve the issue without a visit
The IRS offers online and phone options for common needs such as payment plans, transcripts, payments, refund checks, account information, tax questions and filing online. Review the IRS online and phone help options first if your task may be handled remotely; that may save you a trip.
Why you should not assume a walk-in will be accepted
The Taxpayer Advocate Service, in the IRS’s FY2026 Objectives Report to Congress, reported 546,000 scheduled face-to-face TAC appointments during Filing Season 2025. It also reported that more than 75,000 taxpayers were assisted without appointments during that filing season, describing this help as limited and exceptional. Those historical figures do not establish current walk-in availability; call the office and schedule before visiting.
