How to Choose a Credit Card for Big-Ticket Purchases and EMI Offers

Compare the full cost and repayment schedule—not just the monthly instalment or “no-cost” label—before putting a big purchase on a credit card EMI.

Choose the card and payment plan that leave you with the lowest clearly disclosed total cost you can repay on schedule—not the lowest advertised monthly instalment or a “no-cost EMI” label. Before you buy, compare the purchase price, any upfront discount, EMI interest, processing fee, applicable tax, instalment schedule and the card’s relevant fees. This guide focuses on credit-card purchases in India, where the cited disclosure and repayment rules are issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Offers and issuer terms vary, so check the terms for your specific transaction immediately before converting it.

Start with the total cost, not the card name

A big-ticket purchase creates two separate decisions: which card to use, and whether to repay the transaction in instalments. A card’s rewards, annual fee or network do not answer whether a particular EMI offer is good value. Compare the actual payment options for the same purchase and repayment period, using the terms shown for the transaction.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For each option, add the amounts you will actually owe: the purchase amount after any discount, the interest, processing fee and applicable taxes, plus any other transaction-specific charge. Compare that total with the amount you would pay without converting the purchase to EMI. Keep the card’s annual fee and other ongoing card charges in a separate line of your comparison: they matter to the choice of card, but are not necessarily part of the EMI cost.

RBI’s Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct Directions require key EMI components to be disclosed, including the principal, interest and any upfront discount used to make an EMI appear “no cost.” They also require APR and applicable fees to be disclosed prominently. Ask the issuer or merchant for the offer schedule and full payable amount before conversion; do not rely on a headline or a monthly instalment shown without its terms.

A comparison worksheet

Item What to record Why it matters
Purchase price The price for the item and any discount available for this payment method Lets you compare options on the same transaction rather than on different advertised prices.
Principal financed The amount being converted to EMI Confirms what the instalments are calculated against.
Interest and APR The interest amount, rate and the period to which the rate applies Shows the financing cost rather than hiding it in the instalment amount.
Upfront discount Whether the merchant or issuer reduces the price to offset interest, and by how much A discount can offset interest, but the net result depends on the complete schedule and other charges.
Processing fee and taxes Each transaction charge and applicable tax, shown separately These can affect total cost even when the offer is marketed as “no cost.”
Tenure and instalments Number and amount of instalments, first billing date and due dates Shows both the total repayment period and whether each payment fits your budget.
Total payable The complete amount due across the offer, including applicable charges This is the figure to compare across alternatives.
Card-level costs Annual fee and other applicable charges under the card’s fee schedule Keeps the cost of holding the card distinct from the cost of this purchase.

How to evaluate a “no-cost EMI”

“No-cost” is a description of an offer, not proof that the transaction adds no cost. Under RBI’s EMI disclosure requirements, the issuer must make the principal, interest and any upfront discount provided by the merchant or issuer clear before conversion and show them separately in the bill or statement. An EMI with an interest component must not be presented as zero-interest or no-cost.

Read the disclosed components together. If interest is charged and an upfront discount is used to offset it, compare the discount with that interest and with the processing fee and applicable taxes. Ask what price would apply if you paid without EMI; a discounted price tied to the EMI offer may not be the price available for another payment method. The important comparison is your total payable under each option, not whether the discount and interest have similar-looking figures.

There is a useful caution in a separate RBI publication on lending through BigTech platforms. In the sample described there, processing fees applied even to loans called no-cost EMI; the reported fees ranged from 0.4% to 3.2% of product price, depending on the plan, and the publication reported 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on interest charged. These are findings from that publication’s sample, not standard or current charges for every credit-card EMI. The publication year is not established in the accessible result, so those figures are not a dated market benchmark or a quote for your offer.

Questions to ask before accepting

  • What exact amount will be converted to EMI, and what is the total amount payable over the full tenure?
  • What interest and APR apply, and is there an upfront discount? How are both shown in the offer?
  • Is there a processing fee or another transaction charge, and what applicable tax is added?
  • What is the instalment amount, when is the first instalment billed, and how many instalments will appear?
  • Does the offer change the purchase price or the rewards you would otherwise earn?
  • Can the issuer provide the complete schedule and applicable terms before you confirm the conversion?

Choose a tenure by affordability and total payable

A lower monthly instalment can come with a longer repayment period. Do not select a tenure by looking only at the first monthly figure: compare the total payable and the number of payments for each tenure offered. Use the issuer’s actual schedule, because the available tenures, rates and charges depend on the offer; no universal rate or tenure is established here.

First decide what monthly payment you can meet without relying on the card’s minimum-due option. Then check whether the offered instalment fits within that amount alongside your other obligations. A payment that technically fits but leaves no room for the rest of your card bill is not a safe fit. If the complete schedule is unavailable, or you cannot tell what amount remains due outside the EMI, pause rather than infer the terms from an advertised instalment.

Tenure may also affect fees or taxes under a particular offer. The RBI platform-lending publication’s sample reported that its GST amount increased with loan duration. That is a sample observation, not a rule for every credit-card EMI. Use the tax and fee figures shown for your own offer, rather than projecting that sample onto it.

Check how the EMI will appear on your bill

Before conversion, read the card issuer’s Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC) and the transaction’s EMI schedule. These are the places to check the issuer-specific billing mechanics, which can vary by issuer and transaction. Confirm how the conversion is made, what amount is due each month and whether any part of the bill outside the EMI remains payable.

  1. Confirm the conversion terms. Check the purchase amount being converted, tenure, interest, upfront discount, processing fee, taxes and total payable against the offer you accepted.
  2. Check the billing calendar. Identify the first instalment’s billing date, its amount and subsequent due dates. Do not assume the first instalment will fall in a particular cycle without checking the schedule.
  3. Review the statement after conversion. Verify that the EMI and its disclosed components are reflected as described, and check whether other purchases or charges remain payable on the same bill.
  4. Plan to pay the amount due on time. Check the issuer’s terms for what happens if a payment is late or the bill is not fully paid. Do not assume that paying only the EMI clears every amount due on the card.

Understand the consequences of carrying a balance

RBI’s amendment to the Credit Card and Debit Card Issuance and Conduct Directions, issued and effective March 7, 2024, says the cardholder’s interest-free credit period is suspended if any balance from the previous month’s bill remains outstanding. It also requires issuers to explain the implications of paying only the minimum amount due.

The amendment’s prescribed warning states: “Making only the minimum payment every month would result in the repayment stretching over months/years with consequential compounded interest payment on your outstanding balance”. Treat the minimum due as an amount the issuer requires you to pay—not as a repayment plan that makes a large purchase affordable. Check the issuer’s schedule and pay what is due in full and on time where you can.

If your budget cannot cover the EMI and the rest of the card bill, reconsider the purchase, the payment method or the tenure before committing. An instalment that looks manageable in isolation can still leave other card balances unpaid, with consequences for the interest-free period and the cost of borrowing.

Choose the card only after checking transaction fit

Once you have compared the financing options, assess whether the card itself suits this purchase and your ordinary use. A card’s benefits matter only if you qualify for them, the merchant accepts it, and the value you receive is not outweighed by fees or financing cost.

Acceptance and network

Confirm that the merchant accepts the card and network for the intended transaction; a network-choice rule does not guarantee acceptance at a particular merchant. RBI’s March 6, 2024 notification describes a cardholder’s option to choose a card network, subject to applicability exceptions. Check whether the rule applies to your situation rather than assuming every cardholder or transaction is covered.

Rewards and exclusions

Check the issuer’s current terms for whether the purchase earns rewards after EMI conversion, and whether exclusions, caps or other conditions apply. No current reward rates are established here. Count only rewards you can actually earn and use, and compare their value with the full cost of the transaction. A headline reward rate is not a reason to accept an EMI whose total cost or repayment schedule does not work for you.

Annual fee, charges and available limit

Read the card’s fee schedule for its annual fee and other applicable charges, separately from transaction-specific EMI costs. Confirm that the card has sufficient available credit for the purchase and understand the issuer’s terms for the transaction. No particular card limit, fee or eligibility outcome can be assumed from the fact that a merchant advertises an EMI offer.

A step-by-step decision process

  1. Collect the actual offers. For the same item, request the cash or non-EMI price and the terms for each card EMI option you are considering.
  2. Record every component. Write down principal, interest/APR, upfront discount, processing fee, applicable taxes, tenure, instalment amount and total payable. Ask for any missing item before proceeding.
  3. Compare like with like. Compare total payable for the same purchase and a repayment period you can manage. Keep annual card fees in a separate comparison so they do not disappear into the transaction arithmetic.
  4. Check billing and repayment terms. Read the MITC and schedule for the first billing date, what remains due outside the EMI and the treatment of late or incomplete payment.
  5. Check card fit. Confirm merchant acceptance, available credit, applicable card fees and whether rewards remain eligible after conversion.
  6. Choose, or decline. Proceed only if the total cost is clear and the instalments fit your budget without depending on paying only the minimum due. If the terms remain unclear, do not infer them from the “no-cost” label.
  7. Verify the first statement. After conversion, compare the billed EMI and other amounts due with the schedule you accepted, and raise a discrepancy with the issuer.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing monthly instalments instead of total cost: a smaller instalment may simply stretch repayment over more months.
  • Treating “no-cost” as “no charges”: inspect the interest, discount, processing fee and applicable taxes disclosed for the offer.
  • Counting rewards before checking eligibility: verify post-conversion reward terms, exclusions and caps with the issuer.
  • Ignoring the rest of the statement: an EMI does not by itself establish that other amounts on the card are covered.
  • Using minimum due as the affordability test: RBI warns that minimum-only payment can stretch repayment for months or years and lead to compounded interest.
  • Assuming a general rule guarantees your offer: card terms, merchant acceptance and transaction mechanics depend on the issuer, merchant and transaction.

What the available rules do—and do not—tell you

The cited RBI materials support checking EMI disclosures, APR and fees, the consequences of carrying a balance, and the network-choice framework. They do not establish the best current card, a universal EMI rate, a standard fee or a current reward program. Nor do they determine whether a particular customer qualifies for a specific offer. Your decision should therefore rest on the issuer’s current terms for the exact transaction, not on a market-wide claim that is not established by those terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which credit card is best for a big purchase on EMI?

There is no single best card established for every buyer or offer. Start with cards accepted by the merchant and available to you, then compare the transaction’s principal, interest or APR, any upfront discount, processing fee, applicable taxes, tenure and total payable. Separately consider the card’s annual fee, available credit and reward eligibility after conversion. A card with a compelling reward headline may still be poor value if its EMI costs more or the instalments do not fit your budget.

Is no-cost EMI really free on a credit card?

The label alone does not establish that the transaction has no added cost. RBI requires the principal, interest and any upfront discount used to make an EMI appear no-cost to be disclosed before conversion and separately in the statement; an EMI with interest must not be camouflaged as zero-interest. Also check the transaction-specific processing fee and applicable taxes, then compare the complete amount payable with the non-EMI price. A discount may offset interest, but the total can still include other charges.

What charges should I check before converting a credit-card purchase to EMI?

Request the full offer schedule and record the amount being converted, interest and APR, any merchant or issuer discount, processing fee, applicable taxes, instalment amount, tenure and total payable. Ask when the first instalment will be billed and whether any amount outside the EMI remains due on the card bill. Review the card’s fee schedule separately for annual and other ongoing charges. Do not estimate a current offer from a sample or from the monthly instalment alone.

Should I choose a longer tenure to lower my monthly payment?

Only if the full schedule remains affordable and the total payable is acceptable. A lower instalment can mean more months of repayment, and fees or taxes may vary under an offer. Compare total payable and the number and amount of instalments for each available tenure using the issuer’s actual terms. A sample in an RBI publication on BigTech-platform lending reported GST amounts rising with loan duration, but that observation does not establish the tax treatment or price of your card offer.

What happens if I pay only the minimum due while an EMI is running?

Do not treat the minimum due as a repayment plan. RBI’s March 7, 2024 amendment says the interest-free credit period is suspended if a previous month’s bill balance remains outstanding, and requires issuers to explain the implications of minimum-only payment. Its prescribed warning says repayment can stretch over months or years with compounded interest on the outstanding balance. Check the issuer’s terms for how the EMI and other bill amounts are handled, and plan to pay obligations in full and on time where possible.

The Bottom Line

For a big purchase, compare the full amount payable for the same item—not just the EMI or “no-cost” label. Get the issuer’s schedule before conversion, including principal, interest, discount, fees, taxes, tenure and billing dates. Choose a card only if its acceptance, costs and repayment terms fit your situation, and do not rely on minimum-only payments to make the purchase affordable.
