This guide is for wedding guests choosing a dress for an event described as casual—not for people shopping for a wedding dress. Start with the invitation and wedding website: “casual” still calls for a considered, celebratory outfit, and the venue, season and time of day help define what fits.
What does casual wedding attire mean?
Think of the polish you would bring to a nice dinner, rather than everyday or athletic wear. The Knot quotes bridal stylist Julie Sabatino, founder of The Stylish Bride, saying that “a great rule of thumb is to approach the event like you would a nice dinner.” Vogue’s stylist Carrie Goldberg describes casual as a step down from cocktail attire, not a reason to arrive in a sporty or rumpled outfit.
The Knot reports that 17% of couples who married in the prior year chose casual wedding attire, citing its 2024 Guest Study in a guide updated in 2026. That figure describes couples’ reported dress-code choices; it does not determine what a particular couple expects.
How to choose a dress for the invitation and venue
- Read the invitation and wedding website. Look for a stated dress code, venue details and any color requests. The couple’s guidance takes priority over general advice.
- Match the setting. A garden or daytime event may suit a floral midi or wrap dress. A lightweight maxi can work for a beach or destination wedding. For grass or sand, consider whether your shoes will be practical; dressy flats, sandals or wedges may be easier than narrow heels.
- Account for weather and timing. In hot weather, a lighter dress may feel more comfortable. For a later event, choose a look with enough polish for the time and setting rather than assuming casual means informal at any hour.
- Check comfort and movement. Consider whether you can walk, sit and move comfortably in the dress and footwear throughout the event.
- Ask if the code is unclear. Check with the couple or a member of the wedding party instead of treating ambiguity as permission to wear everyday clothes.
Dress styles that can work for a casual wedding
No single silhouette suits every wedding. Use these as starting points, then check the invitation, location, weather and your own comfort.

Colors and details to consider
David’s Bridal advises guests to avoid white, ivory and off-white, which can look bridal. If the couple has requested a particular color scheme, follow that guidance. Beyond color, avoid sporty or rumpled styling: casual attire is relaxed, but it should still look intentional.
