Choose a Bitcoin hardware wallet that lets you verify transactions on the device, has a security design and firmware you can assess, supports your intended Bitcoin addresses and software, and offers a recovery process you can safely maintain. For cold storage, initialize a new wallet on the hardware device, protect and verify its recovery phrase offline, then send bitcoin to its address. Restoring a phrase first created on a phone or computer does not erase that phrase’s earlier exposure risk.
What a hardware wallet does—and does not do
A hardware wallet keeps the keys used to authorize Bitcoin transactions in a specialized device that you connect when signing. It can reduce exposure to an internet-connected computer, but it does not remove your responsibility to protect the recovery phrase, review transactions, or preserve a usable backup. The device’s security depends in part on how you initialize, use, and recover it.

For cold storage, start with a newly created wallet on the hardware device and transfer funds to it. A phrase generated in a phone or computer wallet has a different security history: importing it into a hardware wallet changes where future signing happens, but cannot undo any earlier exposure.

Transaction review on the device
Look for a device display that shows transaction details and requires physical confirmation. The point is to have an opportunity to inspect what is being signed on the hardware itself, rather than relying only on information shown by the connected computer or phone. A display and confirmation step help with review, but are not a guarantee against mistakes or every attack.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Firmware transparency and physical protections
Open-source firmware and reproducible builds can make independent scrutiny more feasible. Secure elements or other physical protection designs address different device threats; neither openness nor a particular component proves that a wallet is secure in every situation. Treat these as distinct factors, and consider what risks you are trying to address.
Recovery method and backup
Check the backup format, whether it can restore the wallet without the original device, and whether you can verify that you recorded it correctly. Keep recovery material offline: do not photograph it or store it in online accounts. Do not type the phrase into another device except during a genuine recovery. Blockstream’s Jade setup instructions state, “Your recovery phrase grants access to your wallet. Never enter it on another device except for emergency situations.” Blockstream’s setup instructions also advise verifying the backup.

An offline metal backup plate is an optional way to protect a phrase from physical damage. It cannot protect a phrase that was already exposed. Confirm that the plate supports your backup format, and avoid keeping all recovery materials together with the hardware device.

Devices may use USB, Bluetooth, camera or QR workflows, or removable storage. Choose the connection method you can operate consistently; an air-gapped workflow may appeal to some users but can add steps and complexity. Bitcoin compatibility
Verify compatibility across the hardware device and the companion wallet software you plan to use. Check address formats, Taproot and Bech32m support, and any multisig workflow you need. A device may depend on companion software for wallet functions, and some services do not support every address format. Confirm support for your exact setup rather than assuming that a wallet’s general Bitcoin compatibility covers every address type.
Operational complexity
A single-signature wallet is simpler to set up and recover. Multisig distributes signing authority across multiple keys, but it also makes setup, documentation, and recovery more demanding. Choose it only if you can maintain and test a complete recovery plan.

Set up cold storage safely
- Initialize a new wallet on the hardware device. Do not treat importing a phrase created on an internet-connected device as equivalent to creating a fresh cold-storage wallet.
- Record the recovery phrase offline. Keep it out of photos, cloud storage, and other online locations. Treat anyone who obtains it as potentially able to access the wallet.
- Verify the backup using the device’s recovery-check process. Resolve any recording errors before transferring funds.
- Set up the companion software and confirm compatibility. Check address type and any required features before receiving funds.
- Send bitcoin to the new wallet. Confirm the receiving address using the workflow provided by your device and software, then follow the same careful transaction-review process when spending.
When multisig is worth the added work
Multisig can reduce reliance on any one signing key, but errors in the policy or recovery information can jeopardize access or privacy. Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 129 (BIP 129), published on November 10, 2020, describes a standardized multisig setup process. It calls for signers to verify that their key appears in the descriptor, inspect policy parameters such as M-of-N, confirm the first wallet address, and ensure participants see the same confirmation. The proposal warns that a modified configuration could redirect funds, while disclosure of keys or configuration can harm privacy. Read BIP 129: Bitcoin Secure Multisig Setup if you are evaluating this approach.
Make the choice against your own requirements
- Prefer clear on-device transaction details and confirmation if transaction review is a priority.
- Compare firmware transparency, build reproducibility, and physical protection as separate design considerations.
- Choose a recovery format and offline backup method you can verify and preserve.
- Check address types, companion software, and multisig support for your actual workflow.
- Choose the simplest setup that meets your needs; added connectivity choices or multisig can add operational demands.
Bitcoin.org’s hardware wallet selection guide discusses general selection criteria and compatibility. No single device is established as universally best: the right choice depends on your threat model, software compatibility, recovery plan, and comfort with the workflow.
