Before buying RAM or a new drive, record your PC’s exact model, installed memory, and storage by drive. Windows can show what is installed and how much space is free, but those readings do not prove that a component is replaceable or compatible. Confirm upgrade options against documentation for your specific model before spending money.
How to find your PC model and installed RAM
- Right-click Start and choose Settings > System > About.
- Note the model shown below the device name and the Installed RAM value under Device specifications.
- Record the processor and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit if a manufacturer’s requirements make those details relevant.
Installed RAM is the amount currently reported by Windows. It does not tell you how much memory the PC supports, whether any slots are open, or whether its memory is soldered in place. Use the model number to find the PC maker’s specifications or service manual. Microsoft’s device information instructions describe the About page.
How to check how much storage you have and how much is free
See what is using space
Open Settings > System > Storage to review a breakdown of storage use. Depending on the Windows version and device, Storage settings can also show drive type, capacity, and current usage. Record which drive contains Windows and note any additional drives.
Check available space on each drive
Open File Explorer > This PC and look under Devices and drives for available space. If the PC has multiple drives, go to Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives to review the others as well. Keep three figures distinct: capacity is the drive’s total space, used space is what is occupied, and free or available space is what remains. A drive can have little free space without needing replacement, and a large amount of free space does not establish its total capacity or upgrade compatibility.
Can you upgrade the RAM or SSD in your PC?
Use the exact model you recorded to check the PC maker’s service manual and specifications. Confirm that memory or storage is replaceable or expandable and that the proposed part matches the machine. A compatibility tool can help identify candidates, but treat its result as a product-finding aid and verify the exact specifications before checkout.

For RAM, confirm
- Memory generation and type, and module form factor.
- Whether memory is soldered or replaceable, and how many slots are available.
- Capacity supported per slot and maximum total capacity.
- Whether the PC requires a matched configuration.
For an SSD or other drive, confirm
- Supported interface and protocol, physical form factor, and available slot or bay.
- Any capacity limit specified for the model.
- Whether the change requires migrating data or reinstalling the operating system.
Crucial offers a System Scanner and Upgrade Selector to identify potential memory and storage upgrades. Its suggestions are not a substitute for confirming fit and specifications for your exact computer. Some PCs have upgrade paths; others do not.
Choose an upgrade based on the constraint you found
Compare only components confirmed for your PC model. If you are considering more than one option, use the current problem—limited memory or insufficient free storage—to guide the choice, then compare compatible capacity and cost. Do not select a generic RAM kit or SSD on capacity alone: the connection, form factor, and device support must also match.

Keep Windows 11 requirements separate from upgrade compatibility
Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM and a 64 GB or larger storage device among the minimum requirements for Windows 11. Those are operating-system eligibility thresholds, not recommended upgrade sizes and not proof that a particular PC accepts different memory or a replacement drive. Check the Windows 11 system requirements and use PC Health Check for the separate eligibility question; it can also show main-drive usage and free space.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s device information page. Changing hardware by itself does not establish that a PC is eligible for Windows 11.
