DRAM is fast, temporary working memory; NAND flash is nonvolatile memory used to store data. That distinction explains why computers use DRAM as RAM while SSDs, memory cards and USB drives use NAND for storage. Their prices move for related but different reasons, including demand, available supply, product mix and the time it takes manufacturers to expand usable capacity.
DRAM and NAND flash do different jobs
| Comparison | DRAM | NAND flash |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Working memory for data a device is actively using | Persistent storage for data kept for later use |
| What happens without power | Data is lost; cells also require periodic refresh while powered | Data is retained without power |
| Common examples | DDR memory in PCs and servers; LPDDR in mobile devices; GDDR in graphics cards; HBM in AI accelerators and high-performance computing | NAND-based SSDs, eMMC/UFS storage, SD and microSD cards, and USB flash drives |
| Useful comparisons within the category | Generation, speed, capacity, latency, power use and platform support | Capacity, interface, bits per cell, workload and specified endurance and performance |
DRAM is volatile: a device uses it to keep active programs and data readily available, but it does not preserve that data after power is removed. A DRAM cell uses a transistor and a capacitor to represent a bit, and the stored charge must be refreshed periodically. Samsung describes DRAM’s cell structure and its uses across DDR, LPDDR, GDDR and HBM on its DRAM technical page.
NAND flash is nonvolatile, so it can retain stored data when a device is off. It underpins many persistent-storage products, including SSDs, tablets, removable cards and USB drives. Micron explains NAND applications and the distinction between managed and raw NAND in its NAND selection guidance.
Is an SSD DRAM or NAND?
An SSD is a storage device that mainly uses NAND flash; SSD and DRAM are not competing names for the same component. Some SSDs also include a small DRAM cache for management tasks, but that does not change NAND’s role as the primary nonvolatile storage medium. Samsung puts it plainly: “An SSD is neither SRAM nor DRAM,” and says an SSD mainly uses nonvolatile NAND flash to retain data without power. Samsung Semiconductor

There is also a difference between a memory technology and a finished product. A RAM module is a product built around DRAM, while an SSD is a storage device built mainly around NAND and other components. Managed NAND packages include a controller and firmware functions; raw NAND requires the host system to handle functions such as error correction and flash translation.
How NAND cell types trade density against other requirements
NAND categories are commonly described by how many bits each cell stores. Storing more bits per cell can increase density, but a cell label alone does not establish the performance or endurance of a finished product. Implementation and the manufacturer’s specifications matter.

For a specific drive or card, compare its stated workload suitability and endurance and performance specifications rather than inferring them from the cell category alone. Micron’s NAND guidance
What drives DRAM and NAND prices?
Memory prices reflect both demand and the supply manufacturers can deliver in the right product category. A change in overall factory investment does not instantly create more of every kind of memory: suppliers allocate production among products, process upgrades take time, and additional cleanroom capacity can be constrained. Inventory and purchasing behavior also influence how supply and demand meet in the market.

In a 13 November 2025 outlook, TrendForce described suppliers shifting investment toward process upgrades and higher-value products such as HBM, while cleanroom constraints limited near-term capacity additions. It estimated 2026 industry capital expenditure at $61.3 billion for DRAM and $22.2 billion for NAND Flash. Those are estimates in that 2025 outlook, not confirmed spending results. Demand also varies by end market. A surge in server or AI-related demand can affect the supply available to other segments, while PC, mobile, graphics, client SSD and enterprise SSD conditions may diverge. Contract prices negotiated between industry buyers and suppliers are not the same measure as the retail price of a particular RAM kit or SSD.

TrendForce’s dated Q4 2026 contract-price forecast
In a forecast published on 30 September 2026, TrendForce projected quarter-over-quarter increases in Q4 2026 contract prices for both conventional DRAM and NAND Flash:
| Memory category | TrendForce Q4 2026 contract-price forecast | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional DRAM | Up 10–15% | Forecast quarter-over-quarter change in contract prices, published 30 September 2026 |
| NAND Flash | Up 15–20% | Forecast quarter-over-quarter change in contract prices, published 30 September 2026 |
These are forecasts, not observed results or promised changes at retail checkout. TrendForce’s report attributes tight DRAM conditions in part to advanced process capacity going to server products and strong server/RDIMM demand; its NAND discussion describes AI infrastructure supporting enterprise SSD demand alongside different conditions for client SSDs and wafer purchasing. The outlook is segment-specific, so it does not mean every memory product’s price will move by the same amount. TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 Q4 outlook

What this means when comparing a RAM upgrade with storage
RAM and storage address different needs: adding DRAM helps provide working space for active computing, while adding NAND-based storage provides more persistent capacity. When comparing RAM modules or kits, check the memory generation, form factor, capacity and platform compatibility. For SSDs, compare capacity, interface and the product’s stated performance and endurance for the intended workload. A DDR4 or DDR5 label alone does not establish compatibility with a particular computer, and no one capacity or model is right for every device.
Price comparisons also need to match like with like. A DRAM contract-price forecast is not a quote for a consumer RAM kit, just as NAND die or wafer pricing is not the same as the retail price of a finished SSD. Product configuration, segment and sales channel affect the price a buyer sees.
