How to Check Whether Your S&P 500 ETF Is Top-Heavy

Find your ETF’s dated holdings, add the ten largest portfolio weights, and review the largest position and sector allocations without confusing fund figures with index statistics.

Check the ETF’s dated holdings, sort them by portfolio weight, and add the ten largest positions. That total—along with the largest single holding and the sector breakdown—shows how much of the fund is concentrated in its biggest exposures. Do not assume every S&P 500 ETF has the index’s exact weights: fund holdings can differ, and weights change over time.

What “top-heavy” means for an S&P 500 ETF

An S&P 500 ETF can own hundreds of stocks without allocating roughly the same amount to each one. The S&P 500 is float-adjusted market-cap weighted: companies with larger float-adjusted market values receive larger index weights. As a result, the largest constituents can account for a substantial share of the index—and of a fund that tracks it.

For a practical check, define top-heaviness using observable measures rather than treating it as a pass-or-fail label:

  • Top-ten weight: the combined portfolio weight of the fund’s ten largest holdings.
  • Largest holding: the weight of the single biggest position. This shows whether the top-ten total is broadly distributed among several names or depends heavily on one.
  • Sector weights: the share allocated to each sector. These reveal concentration by industry grouping, which is related to but different from concentration in individual companies.

There is no universal top-heavy cutoff established here. A percentage is a description of exposure, not, by itself, a judgment about whether a fund is suitable for a particular investor. The useful question is not whether a particular number is automatically “too high,” but what the fund actually holds, how those exposures compare with another fund, and whether that construction matches the exposure you want to examine.

The S&P 500’s roughly 500-company label is not a promise that every company receives a similar allocation. S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the index as covering approximately 80% of available market capitalization. Its float-adjusted market-cap weighting means constituent weights differ, and the biggest companies can exert more influence on the overall portfolio than the raw constituent count might suggest.

How to calculate your ETF’s top-ten weight

Use the fund’s own holdings rather than substituting an index statistic. Find the sponsor’s holdings page or fact sheet, note the holdings’ as-of date, and use the portfolio-weight field for each position. The sponsor may change page layout or labels, so focus on the dated holdings data rather than assuming a particular menu path.

  1. Open the fund sponsor’s holdings page or fact sheet. Confirm that the page is for the exact ETF share class and ticker you own or are considering.
  2. Record the holdings date. Look for an “as of” or “holdings as of” date. Do not compare a dated holdings list to an undated figure as if both describe the same moment.
  3. Sort the holdings by portfolio weight, largest to smallest. If a downloaded file is available, sort its weight column numerically. Make sure you are sorting weights, not company names, share counts, or market value.
  4. Add the first ten weights. If the displayed weights are percentages, add those percentages directly. The result is the fund’s top-ten weight for that holdings date. If the page shows decimal fractions instead, add the fractions and convert the sum to a percentage.
  5. Record the largest position separately. Keep the first holding’s weight as its own measure; it is not interchangeable with the top-ten total.
  6. Capture the sector breakdown and its date. Use the sponsor’s sector allocation if available, and note whether it is dated to the same snapshot as the holdings.

For example, if a dated holdings file lists the ten largest positions as percentages, the calculation is simply: top-ten weight = weight 1 + weight 2 + … + weight 10. This is a method example, not an ETF-specific result; no particular fund’s ten holding weights should be inferred from the index figures below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the ten positions in rank order as you work. The top ten means the ten largest holdings by the same portfolio-weight measure, not the first ten rows in whatever order a page happens to display. If a sponsor offers a downloadable holdings file, sorting the weight column can reduce the chance of overlooking a larger position farther down the page. Retain the full precision shown in the file for the addition, then round the reported total consistently with the source’s presentation.

Write down the fund ticker, provider, as-of date, and source page alongside the result. That small record makes the figure auditable: another reader can see which portfolio snapshot you used and repeat the addition. It also prevents an old result from being mistaken for a current one after the holdings page has updated.

Use one consistent definition

Use the sponsor’s stated portfolio-weight figures consistently across all ten holdings. Do not add a position’s portfolio percentage to its share count or market value. If a page reports a different measure, such as exposure or notional value, do not silently mix that measure with portfolio weights. Where the definition is unclear, check the sponsor’s explanation before comparing the result with another fund.

Also distinguish the ETF’s reported holdings from the benchmark’s constituents. An index may report weights for its constituents, while an ETF provider reports portfolio weights for the fund. Those figures may not match on a given date. The fund’s investment objective and disclosure can help explain the relationship; for example, Vanguard’s April 28, 2026 VOO summary prospectus says the ETF seeks to track a large-cap benchmark, normally invests at least 80% of net assets in index stocks, and could become concentrated if its target index becomes concentrated. The 80% statement is a prospectus description of the fund’s normal investment policy; it is not a top-ten weight or a reason to replace the reported holdings calculation. Read the VOO summary prospectus filed with the SEC.

A dated S&P 500 benchmark example

S&P Dow Jones Indices reported 503 constituents, a 37.8% combined weight for the ten largest constituents, and an 8.1% weight for the largest constituent as of August 31, 2026. Those are dated index statistics, not a promise that every S&P 500 ETF—or even a particular fund on another date—will show those exact holdings weights. The index page also describes the S&P 500 as covering approximately 80% of available market capitalization; that is an index coverage description, not a measure of how much of the ETF is invested in its top ten holdings. See the S&P 500 index overview and characteristics.

The example illustrates why the number of names alone is a poor guide to concentration: 503 constituents do not mean each receives an equal allocation. The top-ten and largest-constituent figures make the size of the largest exposures more visible, but they do not establish a universal threshold for calling an ETF top-heavy.

The August 31 date matters. The 37.8% figure is useful as a dated benchmark reference, but it should not be relabeled as an October 2026 value or assigned to a particular ETF without checking that fund’s own holdings. Index weights can change as constituent market values and index composition change; fund weights can also reflect the fund’s own implementation. Treat each percentage as belonging to the source and date that reported it.

S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the index this way: “The index includes 500 leading companies and covers approximately 80% of available market capitalization.” That statement describes breadth and coverage. It does not mean that a portfolio is equally weighted, nor does the coverage figure tell you the current contribution of its ten largest names.

Why sector weights add another view

Company-level concentration and sector-level concentration answer different questions. The top-ten calculation tells you how much is assigned to the largest holdings, whatever sectors those companies belong to. A sector breakdown groups the fund’s exposures and can show whether a large share is clustered in one sector even when no single company dominates.

Use sector weights as a complement to the holdings list, not a replacement for it. If the provider publishes sector data and holdings data with different as-of dates, record both dates and avoid presenting them as a perfectly synchronized picture. Classification conventions can also affect sector labels, so a comparison is clearest when both funds use the same provider or disclose comparable definitions.

When reading a sector table, note whether its entries are percentages of the portfolio and whether the date is displayed. Do not assume that adding a sector’s weight gives the weight of one company, or that a top-ten company necessarily represents the whole sector. The company list and sector summary are two views of the same broad exposure question at different levels of grouping.

How to compare two S&P 500 ETFs fairly

Before deciding that one fund is more concentrated, check that the numbers describe comparable portfolios at comparable times. A disciplined comparison uses both funds’ dated holdings, the same calculation method, and the same treatment of sectors and weighting approach.

Comparison item What to record Why it matters
Data date The holdings or fact-sheet as-of date for each fund Weights move; figures from different dates may reflect market movements or portfolio changes rather than a persistent difference.
Largest holding The top position’s portfolio weight Shows the exposure to the single largest holding, which the top-ten total can conceal.
Top ten The sum of the ten largest portfolio weights in each fund Provides a consistent company-concentration measure when both lists use the same date basis and weight definition.
Sector allocation Sector weights and their as-of dates Shows whether exposures are clustered by sector as well as by individual company.
Weighting and rebalancing The index or portfolio weighting method and disclosed rebalancing approach Different construction methods can produce different position sizes and a different pattern of exposures.
Objective and implementation The tracking objective and any disclosed difference between fund holdings and its stated index A fund’s portfolio is not automatically identical to the benchmark snapshot.
Costs Expense ratio and relevant trading costs Concentration is only one comparison dimension; costs are separate and should be evaluated from current fund disclosures.

Do not treat the expense ratio as a concentration statistic. As one dated example of a separate dimension, Vanguard’s VOO summary prospectus dated April 28, 2026 lists total annual fund operating expenses of 0.03%. That is an example tied to that prospectus date, not a universal or current fee quote for S&P 500 ETFs. Trading costs are another consideration and are not captured by that expense figure.

For an apples-to-apples comparison, line up the two holdings dates as closely as possible and apply the same arithmetic to each. If the dates do not match, disclose the difference rather than presenting the results as simultaneous. The sponsor’s holdings snapshot may differ from the index snapshot, and even two S&P 500 funds may describe or implement their objectives differently. The point of a consistent comparison is to make those differences visible, not to force unlike figures into a single ranking.

Separate portfolio construction from price and cost considerations. A lower top-ten share does not, on its own, establish a lower fee, lower trading cost, better result, or better fit. Expense ratios and trading costs belong in the comparison because they affect the overall choice in a distinct way; verify them in current fund materials rather than assuming a dated expense figure still applies.

Keep the comparison reproducible

A small worksheet is enough to make the check repeatable. For each fund, save the ticker, provider, holdings date, ten largest weights, their sum, largest holding’s weight, sector allocation date, stated index or weighting method, expense ratio source and date, and any relevant differences between the portfolio and index objective. Keeping the source page or downloaded file alongside the figures makes it easier to revisit the comparison when the holdings change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you update the worksheet later, recalculate from the new holdings instead of carrying the old top-ten number forward. A changed result may reflect changing market values, index composition, fund implementation, or different dates; the weights alone do not identify which factor caused a change.

A simple worksheet can also keep conclusions in proportion. Record the observed numbers first, then describe the difference: for example, one dated fund snapshot has a higher top-ten sum than another. Do not turn that observation into a prediction or a personal recommendation. If the sector dates differ, or if the fund and benchmark use different reporting bases, note those limitations beside the figures.

What an equal-weight S&P 500 fund changes

An equal-weight approach is a useful contrast to float-adjusted market-cap weighting. Invesco identifies RSP as an S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF. That identity tells you the approach differs from a market-cap-weighted S&P 500 fund; it does not establish that equal weighting is safer, less concentrated in every sense, or likely to produce better returns. See Invesco’s RSP fund page.

If you compare an equal-weight fund with a market-cap-weighted fund, check the same dimensions rather than relying on the label: actual dated holdings, largest position, top-ten sum, sector exposures, fees, trading costs, investment objective, and how the portfolio is rebalanced. The available fund identity alone does not supply a full current side-by-side comparison of performance, fees, or rebalancing details, so those should be verified in current fund materials before drawing conclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equal weight describes the construction approach, not every characteristic of the resulting portfolio. The comparison still needs actual holdings and dates, because a label does not provide the fund’s current largest position or top-ten sum. And because the two approaches differ in how they assign weights, their sector allocations and the pattern of exposure can differ as well. Check the fund disclosures for the method and rebalance approach rather than assuming the method from a shorthand label tells the whole story.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling the index’s 37.8% figure the current weight of your ETF. It is the index’s reported top-ten constituent weight as of August 31, 2026, not a current, universal fund figure.
  • Ignoring the date. A holdings snapshot is time-specific. Attach its date whenever quoting or comparing a result.
  • Assuming a fund exactly mirrors an index snapshot. Check the fund’s actual holdings and its stated objective rather than substituting index data.
  • Using the count of constituents as a proxy for diversification. A portfolio with hundreds of names can still place a large share in its biggest holdings.
  • Using only the top-ten sum. A separate largest-holding figure and sector view reveal aspects that the total cannot show.
  • Declaring a fund “too concentrated” from one number alone. The statistic describes exposure. It does not determine personal suitability or establish an objective pass/fail threshold.
  • Assuming equal weighting automatically solves concentration. It is a different construction method, not a guarantee of lower risk or better returns.
  • Comparing mismatched measures. Use portfolio weights for each fund’s ten largest holdings; do not mix percentages with shares, market values, or another exposure measure.
  • Treating an old fee example as today’s quote. The 0.03% VOO operating-expense figure is tied to the April 28, 2026 summary prospectus. Check current disclosures for a present-day comparison.

How to interpret the result

Read the measures together. A relatively large top-ten sum signals that the biggest holdings collectively make up a substantial portion of the portfolio; a large largest-holding weight shows that exposure is especially prominent in one position. Sector weights tell you whether a separate kind of clustering is present. Comparing those same measures across funds can clarify how the portfolios differ, provided the dates, definitions, and objectives are comparable.

The result is a snapshot, not a forecast. It can help you understand what exposures an ETF currently reports and frame questions about its construction, but it cannot by itself determine expected returns, future risk, or whether the fund fits your broader financial plan.

Keep the conclusion specific to what you measured. You can say that a dated snapshot reports a given top-ten share, largest position, or sector allocation. You cannot infer from that statistic alone what the fund will hold later, how it will perform, or whether the exposure is right for an individual investor. If you want to reassess, use a new dated holdings list and repeat the same calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the top-ten weight of an S&P 500 ETF?

Use the ETF sponsor’s holdings for a stated as-of date, sort by portfolio weight from largest to smallest, and add the first ten weights. Keep the largest holding’s percentage separately, and make sure you do not substitute index weights for the fund’s actual portfolio weights.

Is the S&P 500’s 37.8% top-ten figure the current weight of my ETF?

No. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported a 37.8% top-ten constituent weight for the index as of August 31, 2026. A specific ETF’s portfolio can differ from the index snapshot, and weights change over time. Check the fund’s own holdings and date.

Does an equal-weight S&P 500 ETF automatically have lower risk or better returns?

No such conclusion follows from the equal-weight label alone. Invesco identifies RSP as an S&P 500 Equal Weight ETF, a different weighting approach. Compare dated holdings, sector exposures, fees, trading costs, and rebalancing disclosures; the approach does not guarantee lower risk or better returns.

What else should I check besides the top-ten sum?

Record the largest single holding and the sector breakdown, since these show different kinds of concentration. When comparing funds, also match the data dates and definitions and check weighting method, investment objective, expense ratio, and trading costs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To check whether an S&P 500 ETF is top-heavy, use its dated holdings, add the ten largest portfolio weights, and record the largest position and sector allocations separately. Treat the result as a time-specific description of exposure—not a universal threshold or a suitability verdict—and compare funds only with matching dates and definitions.
