A business may use the higher ₹10 crore threshold only if both cash receipts and cash payments are no more than 5% of their respective totals. Presumptive-tax rules and audits required under another law can change the result, so these thresholds are a screening test, not a personal determination.
This guide explains the AY 2026–27 screening steps, the different tests for business and professional income, which tax-audit forms apply, and the report deadlines described by the Income Tax Department. If your figures are close to a threshold or your facts involve a presumptive scheme or another audit obligation, have an Indian chartered accountant (CA) check the details.

Start with the correct year and activity
This guide concerns FY 2025–26, which is AY 2026–27. The Income Tax Department’s guidance says that AY 2026–27 continues to use the Income Tax Act, 1961, including Forms 3CA, 3CB and 3CD. Do not apply the later framework for Tax Year 2026–27 to this return: the Department says the Income Tax Act, 2025 applies to that tax year and prescribes consolidated Form 26 under the 2026 Rules. The Department identifies Section 63 of the new Act as corresponding to Section 44AB of the 1961 Act.

Before comparing figures, identify whether the income is from a business or a profession and isolate the financial year being tested. Business turnover or gross receipts and professional gross receipts have different general thresholds. The outcome can also depend on presumptive-tax history, transaction modes, entity circumstances and whether another law requires an audit.

- Set the period: use the accounts and transactions for FY 2025–26 when checking AY 2026–27.
- Classify the activity: distinguish business sales, turnover or gross receipts from professional receipts.
- Check the ordinary threshold: compare the relevant amount with the business or profession figure below.
- Test exceptions and other triggers: review the two cash-percentage conditions for the higher business threshold and separately check presumptive-tax rules and any audit duty under another law.
- Confirm the filing path and due date: determine which report applies and whether any deadline extension covers you.
The Department’s relevant AY 2026–27 guidance was reviewed on 9 October 2026. Thresholds, forms and dates may change through legislation or official notices, so confirm the applicable rules for your year before acting.
What is the turnover limit for a tax audit?
The Income Tax Department’s current summary gives the following general screening figures for AY 2026–27. “Above” means the amount exceeds the stated figure; do not treat a threshold as a complete answer if presumptive-tax or other-law rules may also apply.
| Activity or test | Figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Business: ordinary threshold | ₹1 crore | Compare business turnover, sales or gross receipts with this amount. The ordinary threshold is crossed when the amount exceeds ₹1 crore. |
| Business: higher threshold | ₹10 crore | Available for the threshold test only when cash receipts are no more than 5% of total receipts and cash payments are no more than 5% of total payments. |
| Profession: general threshold | ₹50 lakh | Compare professional gross receipts with this figure. Do not substitute a presumptive-scheme ceiling for this general threshold. |
These are not interchangeable limits. First determine whether you are measuring business turnover or professional gross receipts. Then use the corresponding general figure. The ₹10 crore amount is a conditional higher threshold for business, not a general limit for every taxpayer or a blanket threshold for professional receipts.

Not on that fact alone. The higher threshold depends on two separate tests. Calculate cash receipts as a share of total receipts, then calculate cash payments as a share of total payments. Each must be no more than 5%. Passing one test does not compensate for failing the other. If either proportion exceeds 5%, do not assume the ₹10 crore threshold is available.
Use records that let you substantiate both calculations, rather than relying on a general impression that the business is “mostly cashless.” If classification of a receipt or payment, or the relevant total, is uncertain, ask an Indian chartered accountant (CA) to review the underlying records before deciding which threshold applies.
For a useful working check, keep the receipt and payment tests separate: write down the cash-receipt amount and total receipts, then the cash-payment amount and total payments. Calculate each percentage independently and retain the records supporting the figures. This is a way to organize the facts, not a substitute for confirming how particular transactions should be classified.
Does a business need an audit above ₹1 crore?
Crossing ₹1 crore is the ordinary business-threshold signal, but a business whose turnover does not exceed ₹10 crore may fall within the higher threshold if both 5% tests are met. Conversely, being below ₹1 crore does not automatically finish the check: presumptive taxation can create a separate audit consequence. The threshold screen also does not replace review of the taxpayer’s specific facts.

If you cannot establish the cash percentages from records, do not rely on an assumption about the higher limit.

Check presumptive taxation separately
Presumptive taxation is a separate branch of the analysis, not merely another turnover threshold. The Department’s AY 2026–27 materials discuss Sections 44AD, 44ADA and 44AE of the 1961 Act. Eligibility and consequences differ by scheme. In particular, declaring income below the prescribed presumptive amount can require maintenance of books and a tax audit. Do not combine the schemes into one rule or assume that every business or professional can use every option.
Review the scheme relevant to the activity and the taxpayer’s history, rather than stopping after a turnover comparison. The question is not simply whether the business is smaller than ₹1 crore or the profession is below ₹50 lakh. Check whether a presumptive option was used or is proposed, whether the taxpayer is eligible under the relevant provision, and whether the income declared is at least the prescribed amount. Where the declared income is below that amount, the Department’s materials describe potential requirements to maintain books and obtain a tax audit; the particular scheme conditions matter.
This is why the presumptive check should be done even if the ordinary threshold appears straightforward. The scheme’s conditions and consequences can turn on facts not captured by a single turnover number, including the activity and prior-year choices. A CA can check the applicable provision and history rather than assuming that all schemes work alike.
Professionals and the ₹75 lakh figure
The prescribed AY 2026–27 return material describes a ₹75 lakh presumptive-receipts ceiling for a specified non-cash case: receipts in cash and other specified modes together must not exceed 5% of total receipts. It also shows a normal ceiling of ₹50 lakh for that scheme. This is a scheme ceiling, not a replacement for the Department’s general ₹50 lakh professional audit threshold and not a universal audit exemption for professions.
The same material describes presumptive professional income and says that income below 50% of professional gross receipts triggers books and audit under the cited scheme. The rule applies in the context of the relevant scheme and its eligibility conditions; it should not be read as saying every professional can elect the scheme or that every receipt profile qualifies for the higher ceiling. A CA can verify eligibility, the applicable provision and the declared-income consequence against the taxpayer’s prior-year choices and current records.
Keep the two professional figures distinct when making your notes. The ₹50 lakh figure is the general professional threshold in the Department’s summary. The ₹50 lakh or ₹75 lakh figures in the prescribed return material describe presumptive-scheme receipt ceilings, with the higher ceiling tied to the specified mode-of-receipt condition. The latter does not by itself answer whether a particular professional must have a tax audit.
What to gather for this check
- Financial-year accounts and a reconciliation of business turnover or professional gross receipts.
- Records supporting cash receipts, total receipts, cash payments and total payments if considering the ₹10 crore business threshold.
- Prior and current presumptive-tax declarations, including the scheme used and income declared.
- Information about any audit obligation imposed by another law.
These records help make the screening useful; they do not settle scheme eligibility where the legal conditions or history are unclear. If more than one activity is involved, record the business and professional figures separately so the correct measure can be reviewed.

If a tax audit under Section 44AB applies, the report path depends on whether another law already requires the accounts to be audited. The Income Tax Department’s Form 3CB-3CD FAQ explains that a person not required under another law to have accounts audited furnishes the Section 44AB report in Form 3CB with the particulars in Form 3CD.
Rank #3
| Are the accounts required to be audited under another law? | Tax-audit report path | What the forms do |
|---|---|---|
| Yes | Form 3CA-3CD | Form 3CA is the audit report; Form 3CD contains the prescribed particulars. |
| No | Form 3CB-3CD | Form 3CB is the report under Section 44AB; Form 3CD contains the prescribed particulars. |
The Income Tax Department says the taxpayer assigns a registered CA, who accesses and submits the report through the e-Filing portal. Its user manual describes uploading the report using a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). Confirm the portal workflow and required documentation with the CA handling the filing; the form choice itself follows the other-law audit test above.
The two paths are not competing choices based on preference. Ask whether the accounts are required to be audited under another law. If yes, the tax-audit report path is Form 3CA with Form 3CD particulars. If no, it is Form 3CB with Form 3CD particulars. The CA’s portal submission does not remove the need to establish that the tax-audit requirement applies in the first place.
The Department’s online materials for AY 2026–27 continue to identify Forms 3CA, 3CB and 3CD under the 1961 Act. For a later Tax Year 2026–27 under the 2025 Act, the Department describes Form 26 under the 2026 Rules, with a 30 September 2027 due date. Do not carry that later form or deadline back to FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27.
What is the AY 2026–27 tax-audit report deadline?
The deadline depends on the taxpayer category and the corresponding income-tax-return (ITR) deadline. The Department’s AY 2026–27 FAQ describes the audit report as generally due one month before the ITR deadline. Its stated dates and the later extension are not universal to all audited businesses.
| Case described by the Department | Audit-report date | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| General cases with an ITR deadline of 31 October 2026 | 30 September 2026 | Normal date cited in current Department guidance. |
| Transfer-pricing cases with a 30 November 2026 return date | 31 October 2026 | Date given in the Department’s AY 2026–27 FAQ. |
| Specified taxpayers covered by Circular No. 07/2026 | 21 October 2026 | Extension applies to the specified group whose ITR deadline moved from 31 October to 21 November 2026; it is not stated to cover every taxpayer. |
On 29 September 2026, the Department announced that Circular No. 07/2026 extended the relevant ITR deadline from 31 October to 21 November 2026 and the tax-audit report deadline from 30 September to 21 October 2026 for the specified category. Check the circular and subsequent Department notices to establish whether your business is included. Do not use the extension merely because you are required to get a tax audit.
For a deadline check, first identify the taxpayer category and its ITR due date, then look for the associated report date and any applicable extension. The general date of 30 September 2026 is associated with cases whose ITR deadline is 31 October. The Department also gives 31 October 2026 for transfer-pricing cases with a 30 November return date. The 21 October extension is described for specified taxpayers whose ITR date was extended; it is not a general replacement date.
Because the extension is category-specific, check the text of Circular No. 07/2026 and any later Department notice rather than relying on a headline or another taxpayer’s filing calendar. If you are unsure whether the specified category includes you, confirm with your CA and the Department’s current portal information.
How to reach a reliable decision
A practical screening result should be documented, especially if it depends on the higher business threshold or a presumptive scheme. Write down the activity classification, relevant period, threshold figure, supporting turnover or receipts, both cash percentages where relevant, scheme history, other-law audit status and deadline category. That makes it easier for a CA to identify which fact could change the conclusion.
Rank #4
- Ordinary business screen: compare business turnover or gross receipts with ₹1 crore.
- Higher business threshold: establish separately that cash receipts are no more than 5% of total receipts and cash payments are no more than 5% of total payments before relying on ₹10 crore.
- Professional screen: compare professional gross receipts with ₹50 lakh, then examine any applicable presumptive-scheme rule separately.
- Presumptive-tax check: verify eligibility, declared income and the consequences of declaring below the prescribed amount; do not infer the answer from turnover alone.
- Form and timing: identify whether another law requires an audit and confirm whether a specific deadline extension applies to the taxpayer.
Borderline figures, mixed business and professional activities, uncertain cash classifications, or a presumptive-tax history are good reasons to have an Indian CA review the facts. A general online threshold summary cannot determine an individual taxpayer’s audit duty without those details.
A concise file note can help make that review efficient. Include the financial year and assessment year; a short description of each activity; the relevant turnover or receipt figure and its source in the accounts; each cash percentage and its underlying totals if relying on the higher business threshold; the presumptive scheme and income declared, if any; and whether another law requires an audit. Add the taxpayer’s deadline category and any notice or circular relied on for an extension. This does not replace the CA’s review, but it makes the assumptions visible instead of leaving the decision at “turnover is under the limit.”
For a borderline figure, do not round a number into or out of a threshold without checking the underlying amount. Similarly, do not treat the 5% tests as a single “cashless” label: the receipt side and payment side are independent. If one figure or classification is disputed or uncertain, have that item resolved before settling the screening result.
Frequently asked questions
Does my business need a tax audit in India?
For AY 2026–27, start by comparing business turnover or gross receipts with the ordinary ₹1 crore threshold. A higher ₹10 crore threshold may apply if both cash receipts and cash payments are no more than 5% of their respective totals. Then check presumptive-tax consequences and any audit obligation under another law. These are screening steps; the taxpayer’s circumstances determine the result.
What is the turnover limit for tax audit?
The Income Tax Department’s AY 2026–27 summary gives ₹1 crore as the ordinary business threshold, with a conditional ₹10 crore threshold when both cash tests meet the 5% limit. For a profession, the general threshold is ₹50 lakh in gross receipts. Presumptive-scheme receipt ceilings are separate and should not be confused with these general thresholds.
Is tax audit required above ₹1 crore?
₹1 crore is the ordinary business threshold, but businesses meeting both 5% cash conditions may use the higher ₹10 crore threshold described by the Department. Presumptive-tax rules can also affect businesses below the ordinary threshold. Review the relevant facts rather than treating the ₹1 crore comparison as the only test.
Can I use the ₹10 crore tax-audit limit if I mostly use bank payments?
Not solely because most payments are through a bank. Cash receipts must be no more than 5% of total receipts, and cash payments must separately be no more than 5% of total payments. Both conditions must be met; support the calculations with records.

Do professionals need a tax audit above ₹50 lakh?
The Department’s general AY 2026–27 summary gives ₹50 lakh as the professional gross-receipts threshold. The prescribed material also describes a ₹75 lakh presumptive-receipts ceiling in a specified case, but that is a scheme ceiling, not a universal professional audit limit. Eligibility and any declared-income consequences should be checked under the applicable scheme.

Which tax-audit form should my CA file?
If another law requires the accounts to be audited, the report path is Form 3CA-3CD. If no other law requires an audit, it is Form 3CB-3CD. The registered CA accesses and submits the report through the e-Filing portal, using a Digital Signature Certificate as described in the Department’s manual.
Does the 21 October 2026 extension apply to every audited business?
No. The Department’s 29 September 2026 notice describes the extension under Circular No. 07/2026 for specified taxpayers whose ITR deadline moved from 31 October to 21 November 2026. Confirm that you are in the specified category; being subject to a tax audit alone does not establish that the extension applies.
Which tax law and forms apply to FY 2025–26?
The Department says AY 2026–27 uses the Income Tax Act, 1961, including Forms 3CA, 3CB and 3CD. The 2025 Act and Form 26 described by the Department apply to Tax Year 2026–27, a later period. Match the law and forms to the period being filed.
What should I do if my figures or scheme eligibility are unclear?
Gather the relevant accounts, receipt and payment records, presumptive declarations, and information about any audit under another law. Ask an Indian CA to check the activity classification, threshold, cash percentages, scheme eligibility and deadline category. A general threshold guide cannot determine an individual taxpayer’s position from incomplete facts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my business need a tax audit in India?
For AY 2026–27, start with the ₹1 crore ordinary business threshold. The higher ₹10 crore threshold may apply if cash receipts and cash payments are each no more than 5% of their respective totals. Also check presumptive-tax consequences and any audit requirement under another law.
What is the turnover limit for tax audit?
The Income Tax Department gives ₹1 crore as the ordinary business threshold and a conditional ₹10 crore threshold if both 5% cash tests are met. The general professional threshold is ₹50 lakh in gross receipts.
Can I use the ₹10 crore tax-audit limit if I mostly use bank payments?
Not based on bank payments alone. Cash receipts must be no more than 5% of total receipts, and cash payments must separately be no more than 5% of total payments. Both conditions must be met.

Do professionals need a tax audit above ₹50 lakh?
The general AY 2026–27 professional gross-receipts threshold is ₹50 lakh. A separate presumptive-scheme ceiling of ₹75 lakh applies only in a specified case and is not a universal professional audit limit.
Which tax-audit form should my CA file?
Use Form 3CA-3CD if another law requires the accounts to be audited, or Form 3CB-3CD if it does not. A registered CA submits the report through the e-Filing portal.
Does the 21 October 2026 extension apply to every audited business?
No. Circular No. 07/2026 extends the report date for specified taxpayers whose ITR deadline moved from 31 October to 21 November 2026. Check whether your taxpayer category is covered.
The Bottom Line
For FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27, classify the activity first, then apply the correct general threshold: ₹1 crore for business or ₹50 lakh for professional receipts. A business can consider the ₹10 crore threshold only after confirming that both cash receipts and cash payments are no more than 5% of their respective totals. Check presumptive taxation separately, determine whether another law requires an audit to choose Form 3CA-3CD or 3CB-3CD, and verify the deadline category—including whether a specific extension covers you. Have an Indian CA review borderline or unusual facts.
