To find out whether your broadband provider or contract has changed, compare your latest bill and account details with your original contract and earlier correspondence, then ask the provider to confirm in writing what changed and when. A new company name on a bill may reflect a takeover or trading-name change; it does not by itself prove that your contract, minimum term or service has changed.
This guidance is for UK broadband customers and reflects Ofcom guidance checked on 7 October 2026. The next steps depend on whether another company took over your provider, your existing provider changed contract terms, or your service was switched to a different provider.
How to check whether your broadband provider or contract has changed
- Compare the names and contact details. Check your latest bill, provider account page, bank statement reference, and recent emails or letters against older documents. A different billing or trading name alone does not establish that the service contract changed. Ask who is now responsible for providing your service and whether the company took over from another provider. Ofcom explains what to check if a provider goes out of business.
- Review your account and original paperwork. Look for your package, price, contract start date, minimum-term end date, contract status, notices and order history. Compare these with your original contract summary, full contract information, bills and correspondence. Ofcom says you may be able to find the contract end date in your provider’s app, bills or correspondence; its contract end-date guidance describes the information to look for.
- Ask for a written account of the change. Contact the provider using a number or web chat from its official website or a bill. Ask for the date and nature of any change, who authorized it, the terms and charges before and after, your minimum-term end date, any notice period and any early termination charge. Keep copies of the response and request a complaint reference if you dispute the change.
- Choose the relevant next steps below. A takeover, a change to your existing contract terms and a switch to another provider are different events. Do not assume that a new company name means you have started a new minimum term.
If another company took over your provider
When a broadband or landline provider goes out of business, Ofcom says customers can usually continue using the service without interruption. In most cases, the existing contract transfers to the new provider. If the new provider changes your contract terms, you should have a right to leave without an early termination charge. Check the takeover notice and your account, and ask the new provider to explain any change to price, service, contract term or conditions in writing. The effect on your account depends on what was transferred and what, if anything, was changed.
Start with Ofcom’s guidance on what happens when a provider goes out of business. If the provider’s name or ownership changed but your terms appear unchanged, ask the company to confirm whether your existing contract and minimum term continue.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If your existing provider changed your contract terms
Ofcom says providers must generally give at least one month’s notice of a contract-term change and a right to exit without penalty if the change does not benefit you. Exceptions include a change exclusively to your benefit, such as a speed upgrade; a purely administrative change with no negative effect, such as an address or bank-detail change; or a change directly imposed by law, such as a VAT-rate change. Check the original terms and the notice you received: not every bill increase is treated alike.
An in-contract price rise should have been made clear when you signed. If the specific rise was not made clear then, Ofcom says you have a right to exit without penalty. Ask the provider to identify the clause or notice it relies on and explain how it applies to your account. Ofcom sets out the rules and exceptions in its contract guidance.

If you believe the change was not properly notified, the terms were unclear or a term is unfair, raise the issue with customer service and make a formal complaint if needed. Ofcom says you may take an unresolved complaint to the provider’s alternative dispute resolution scheme after six weeks, or sooner if the provider issues a deadlock letter. Follow the complaint and ADR steps in Ofcom’s contracts guidance.
If you think you were switched without agreeing
Ofcom calls a switch to another provider without your knowledge or consent “slamming.” Its advice is to contact your old provider and ask it to switch your service back as soon as possible. Also contact the provider that took over the service, say that you did not agree to the switch and ask it to investigate. If a switch is only being attempted, ask your current provider to cancel the order.

For a UK broadband switch, contact the new provider you chose to start One Touch Switch; the new provider generally manages the switch. Read the information from your current provider, including any charges. Before you proceed, check whether you are still in your minimum term, whether an early termination charge applies, what happens to a provider email address, and whether the new connection uses a different network or affects a bundle. Some network changes need separate arrangements.

How to compare the terms before accepting a new deal
If you are out of contract or considering a switch, compare the whole deal rather than the headline monthly price. Confirm availability at your address and check:

- the monthly price now and after any stated increase;
- the minimum term and its end date;
- speed and connection technology;
- setup, equipment and installation costs;
- any early termination charge on your current contract;
- included services and bundle features; and
- whether the proposed provider uses a different network.
Ofcom’s 2026 switching-provider guidance reports that around 3.5 million people switched landline or broadband provider over the prior two years. Ofcom also reports analysis suggesting many out-of-contract customers could save over £100; that is population-level analysis, not a prediction or quote for an individual household.
