A market sell-off affects your retirement investments only to the extent that the stocks, bonds, cash and other assets you actually own have fallen in value. To check, review every retirement account, total the stock exposure across accounts, look through your funds for overlapping holdings, and compare today’s allocation with the plan you intended to follow. An index headline or a single account balance cannot show your personal loss or tell you whether selling is appropriate.
The process below separates measurable account changes from decisions that depend on your retirement date, withdrawals, income sources and risk tolerance. It is an account-checking method, not individualized investment advice.

Start with a complete inventory of your retirement accounts
Use the latest statement or provider website for every workplace plan and individual retirement account. Include old employer plans, rollover accounts and accounts held at different institutions. Looking at only the account you use most often can hide a large stock position elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- List each account. Record the plan type (such as 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), traditional IRA or Roth IRA), the provider and the statement or valuation date.
- Record the total value. Use the value on a clearly identified date. If the portal shows an intraday value, note that it can change while markets are open.
- Copy each investment and its value or percentage. Include mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, company stock, bond funds, stable-value options, money-market funds and cash.
- Save contribution, withdrawal and transaction information. New deposits, distributions, exchanges and fees can change the balance independently of market performance.
The IRS says an individual benefit statement for a 401(k) shows the value of each investment and information about the ability to direct investments. Statements for IRAs and other plans use different layouts, so look for an investment-detail, holdings or positions view if the first page shows only a total.

A worksheet that prevents missed accounts
| Account | As-of date | Total value | Stock investments | Bond/cash/other | Recent activity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Employer plan | Statement date | Account total | List each fund and value | List each option and value | Contributions, withdrawals, exchanges |
| IRA or rollover IRA | Statement date | Account total | Funds, shares or securities | Funds, securities or cash | Deposits, trades, fees |
| Other retirement account | Statement date | Account total | Stock exposure | Non-stock exposure | Any transactions |
Do not treat a missing line item as zero. If a provider gives only a percentage, keep that percentage and obtain the dollar value or a later statement before drawing precise conclusions.
Separate stocks, bonds, cash and other exposures
Classify each holding by what it owns, not just by its name. A fund labeled balanced, growth, income or target date can contain several asset classes. Read the fund’s fact sheet or prospectus for its stated stock, bond and cash mix.
| Category | What to identify | Why it matters during a sell-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stocks | U.S. and international equity funds, individual shares and company stock | Usually the most direct exposure to an equity decline; different regions and sectors can fall by different amounts. |
| Bonds | Government, corporate, municipal, aggregate and short-term bond funds | Bond prices can move for interest-rate and credit reasons, so a bond fund is not automatically a cash substitute. |
| Cash and cash equivalents | Money-market funds, stable-value options, bank deposits and settlement cash | Typically has less day-to-day market movement, but may have different yields, guarantees or withdrawal rules. |
| Other investments | Real-estate funds, commodities, alternative funds or annuity contracts | May respond differently from stocks and bonds and can have special valuation or liquidity terms. |
Add exposures across accounts. For example, a stock-heavy employer plan combined with a bond-heavy IRA may produce a moderate overall allocation, while two apparently different stock funds may make the total more concentrated. The SEC advises considering the overall allocation, including other investments and sources of retirement income, rather than evaluating one account in isolation.

Look through each fund for concentration and overlap
Two funds can have different names, managers or strategies and still own many of the same companies. During a sell-off, that overlap can make a portfolio fall more than its list of fund names suggests.
- Open the holdings list. On a provider site, this is commonly under a fund’s name, “research,” “fund details,” “portfolio” or “documents.” Labels vary by provider.
- Capture the largest holdings and sector weights. Note the date of the holdings report because positions change.
- Compare funds side by side. Mark companies, sectors and countries that appear in more than one fund.
- Check indirect exposure. A broad fund can contain a company that also appears as a large position in a sector fund or an employer-stock option.
- Assess concentration in the whole portfolio. A small position in one fund may become a large exposure when the same company is repeated elsewhere.
Owning several funds is not automatically diversification. Meaningful diversification depends on the assets and risks underneath the funds. If a holdings report is unavailable, record “not stated” rather than assuming that a fund is broadly diversified.
Questions to ask about an overlapping holding
- Does the same company appear among the top holdings of multiple funds?
- Do several funds emphasize the same sector, country or market-cap segment?
- Is employer stock counted separately from mutual-fund exposure to the employer’s industry?
- Would a decline in one sector affect a large share of the combined retirement portfolio?
Measure the account change without confusing market movement with cash flow
A current balance is a snapshot, not automatically a gain or loss since you invested. To estimate what changed, compare values from two identified dates and adjust for money that entered or left the account.

A practical estimate is:
Estimated investment change = ending value − starting value − contributions + withdrawals − fees adjusted for the sign of each transaction.
Use the transaction signs consistently. If you deposited money, subtract that deposit from the apparent increase; if you withdrew money, add it back when estimating the investment result. Include exchanges between funds if they changed the holdings, and do not treat an exchange within the same account as new money.
Illustrative calculation
Suppose an account was valued at $100,000 on January 1 and $88,000 on a later statement date. During that period, you contributed $5,000 and paid $200 in fees, with no withdrawals. The change attributable to investment performance is estimated as $88,000 − $100,000 − $5,000 + $200, or a $16,800 decline. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a measurement of any market or person’s result.
For a more accurate performance figure, use the provider’s time-weighted or personal-rate-of-return calculation and verify which dates and cash flows it includes. A statement may show realized gains, unrealized gains and losses, or a cost basis, but those figures can cover a different period from the sell-off you are examining.
Compare the current allocation with the allocation you intended
Market gains and losses change percentages even when you make no trades. If stocks fall while bonds hold steadier, the stock percentage may decline; if stocks had risen before the sell-off, the portfolio may still be above its long-term target despite the recent drop.

- Measure the difference in percentage points, not just dollars.
- Check whether your plan uses a calendar review, a tolerance band or another rebalancing rule.
- Consider taxes, trading restrictions, plan fees and withdrawal needs before changing investments.
Investor.gov describes periodic and threshold-based approaches to rebalancing. Neither approach creates a universal instruction to trade after a market decline. Your target allocation and review interval should reflect your time horizon, ability to tolerate losses and need for accessible income.

| Review approach | How it works | Potential benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calendar review | Check and, if appropriate, rebalance on a set schedule. | Creates a repeatable process and reduces the temptation to react to headlines. | May trade when the allocation has barely moved or fail to address a large drift between review dates. |
| Threshold review | Rebalance when an asset class moves beyond a chosen percentage-point band. | Focuses action on material drift. | Requires monitoring and a preselected threshold; frequent volatility can trigger repeated decisions. |
| Cash-flow rebalancing | Direct new contributions or withdrawals toward underweighted categories. | Can reduce trading and taxable activity in accounts where this is relevant. | May be too slow to correct a large imbalance. |
Do not create a new target merely because a sell-off made one asset look cheaper or safer. A target is a long-term plan, not a forecast of the next market move.
Evaluate a target-date fund beyond its year
If you hold a target-date fund, the year in its name is only a starting point. Confirm the target year, current stock/bond/cash mix, glide path, fees and underlying funds in the prospectus and latest shareholder report.
- Confirm the target year. A fund designed for 2040 may not fit someone retiring substantially earlier or later.
- Read the glide path. Determine how the allocation changes as the target date approaches and whether the fund is designed to reach its most conservative mix at or after that date.
- Identify the underlying funds. Check their holdings, expenses and overlap with investments in your other accounts.
- Review total costs. Include the target-date fund’s expense ratio and the expenses of underlying funds where the documents disclose them.
- Fit it into the whole plan. Add pensions, Social Security, annuities, taxable investments, emergency reserves and expected withdrawals to the decision.
The SEC’s Investor Bulletin dated March 25, 2025, states: “Target date retirement funds structured as mutual funds and ETFs do not guarantee that you will have sufficient retirement income, or a specific level of retirement income, at or after the target date.” The target date is not a promise of a particular balance or income stream.
Relate the sell-off to your retirement timeline and withdrawals
The same account decline can have different consequences for different households. Someone decades from retirement may have time for contributions and market cycles to affect the eventual result. Someone taking withdrawals may need to sell assets while prices are down, making the sequence of returns and available cash more important.
If retirement is many years away
- Check whether the current allocation still matches your written long-term plan.
- Verify that contributions are continuing and are being invested as intended.
- Review concentration and overlap rather than trying to predict the exact market bottom.
If retirement is near
- List spending needs for the next several years and the accounts that will fund them.
- Identify which holdings can provide planned withdrawals without forcing an unwanted sale.
- Check whether your stock allocation is consistent with your ability to withstand a further decline.
If you are already withdrawing
- Separate a short-term spending reserve from assets intended for longer-term growth.
- Review the timing and size of distributions, taxes and required minimum distributions where applicable.
- Recalculate the effect of withdrawals on the remaining allocation after each major transaction.
These checks do not establish a safe withdrawal rate or a personally suitable allocation. They identify the information a personalized analysis would require.
Do not mistake a headline index for your personal result
An index decline describes the index, not every retirement portfolio. Your result depends on the securities you own, their weights, the dates of contributions and withdrawals, fees, currency exposure and whether your funds track that index at all. A portfolio containing bonds or cash may fall less than an all-stock index; a concentrated portfolio may fall more.

Likewise, an account’s current value does not show whether a loss is realized or unrealized. Selling an investment can realize a loss or gain, while an unsold position reflects a current valuation that can change. Retirement-account tax treatment and plan rules differ, so do not infer tax consequences from a market headline.

Use a consistent comparison when choosing between funds or allocations
If the sell-off prompts you to compare two funds or allocation choices, evaluate them using the same facts and the same date.
| Comparison | What to examine | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Asset mix | Stock, bond, cash and other percentages; domestic and international exposure. | The option is materially riskier or more conservative than your intended allocation. |
| Holdings and overlap | Largest companies, sectors, countries and overlap with existing funds. | Different fund names conceal the same concentrated exposure. |
| Target date and glide path | Target year, allocation changes and whether the glide path continues through retirement. | The year or path does not match your retirement and withdrawal timing. |
| Fees | Expense ratio, underlying-fund expenses and any plan-level charges disclosed in the documents. | A higher cost has no clear role in meeting your plan’s objectives. |
| Overall fit | Other accounts, income sources, emergency reserves, goals and ability to tolerate losses. | The choice is based only on recent performance or a market headline. |
Use the prospectus, fact sheet, shareholder report and plan disclosures for the relevant share class and date. A fee or allocation shown for one share class may not apply to another.
A sell-off review checklist
- Have you listed every retirement account and its valuation date?
- Have you recorded each investment’s value or percentage?
- Have you classified holdings by underlying asset type?
- Have you combined exposures across accounts and other relevant investments?
- Have you checked top holdings and sector overlap inside funds?
- Have you separated market movement from contributions, withdrawals, fees and transactions?
- Have you compared the current allocation with a target you established for your circumstances?
- If you use a target-date fund, have you read its target year, glide path, holdings and fees?
- Have you identified near-term withdrawals and other retirement income?
- Are you making a decision because your plan changed, or only because prices moved?
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Checking only the largest account
Problem: The combined stock percentage may be very different from the percentage in that account.
Correction: Add all retirement accounts and relevant outside investments before evaluating risk.

Correction: Compare holdings and sector weights, not just fund names.
Calling the entire balance change a market loss
Problem: Contributions, withdrawals, fees and exchanges also change the balance.
Correction: Use two dated values and adjust for each cash flow.
Rebalancing solely because the market fell
Problem: A decline alone does not prove that your target allocation changed or that selling is suitable. Investor.gov cautions against rash decisions during volatility, including selling after a decline and missing a recovery.
Correction: Follow a preselected allocation and review rule, then consider taxes, plan restrictions and withdrawals.
Treating a target-date year as a guarantee
Problem: The year does not specify your income or ensure a particular balance.
Correction: Read the glide path, fees and underlying holdings and assess the fund alongside your other resources.
When personal advice may be useful
Consider a fiduciary financial professional if you are close to retirement, already taking withdrawals, have a concentrated employer-stock position, hold several accounts with overlapping funds or cannot determine your combined allocation. Bring statements, transaction history, contribution rates, withdrawal needs, expected income sources and fund documents. The cited official materials do not endorse a particular adviser or service.
A professional can help analyze whether your allocation and withdrawal plan fit your circumstances, but no adviser can know your result without accurate balances, holdings and dates. Keep copies of the statements and assumptions used so you can review the plan when your situation changes.
