An international mutual fund can earn one return in the currency of its overseas holdings and a different return when that value is converted into Indian rupees. For an unhedged exposure, rupee depreciation generally increases the rupee value of a given foreign-currency investment, while rupee appreciation generally reduces it. The fund’s underlying investments can still rise or fall, so currency movement alone never guarantees a profit.
The mechanism in one equation
SEBI’s scheme information disclosure describes investor returns as “a combination of returns from investments and from movements in exchange rates.” That is the central reason an international fund’s return in rupees may differ from the performance reported in dollars, euros, yen or another foreign currency.

The exchange-rate quote must be expressed as rupees per unit of the relevant foreign currency. The calculation is explanatory rather than a statement of a fund’s exact NAV. It leaves out expenses, taxes, distributions, cash flows, valuation timing and any currency hedging. An actual scheme’s result depends on its holdings and operating structure.
The investment return
This is the change in the value of the overseas securities, fund units or index exposure, measured in the currency in which those assets are priced. If the portfolio rises 8% in its local currency, that is the underlying investment return before converting the result into rupees.
The currency return
Suppose the fund is exposed to US-dollar assets and the quoted rate moves from ₹80 to ₹82 per dollar. One dollar is now worth more rupees. An Indian investor therefore receives a currency tailwind when the dollar value is converted back into rupees. If the rate falls from ₹80 to ₹78, the same dollar value converts into fewer rupees, creating a currency drag.

Currency is not normally added as a separate percentage-point adjustment. The investment value changes first, and the resulting foreign-currency amount is then converted. That is why the combined result is a product of two factors. A positive investment return and a weaker rupee reinforce one another, while a positive investment return and a stronger rupee can leave the investor with a much smaller rupee gain.

The first two rows show why the same overseas portfolio can look much better or worse to an Indian investor depending on the dates chosen. The third shows the limit of the currency benefit: depreciation can cushion a fall in the assets, but it cannot assure a positive rupee result.
Which currency actually drives your fund’s result?
“International fund” is a category, not a single currency exposure. AMFI notes that these schemes may invest through overseas exchange-traded funds, passive index funds or actively managed overseas mutual funds. An international equity scheme may also hold some Indian equity or debt. The currency that matters is therefore the currency exposure of the securities the scheme actually owns, not simply the country named in the fund’s marketing material.
Look through the fund structure
A scheme investing mainly in US-dollar assets will be sensitive primarily to the rupee-dollar rate. A global fund can have several currencies at once, such as dollars, euros, pounds or yen. A portfolio holding another fund may also inherit that fund’s asset and currency mix. The result is a weighted exposure rather than a single exchange-rate bet.

Check whether exposure is hedged
Do not assume that every international fund is unhedged. The scheme may hedge some or all of its foreign-currency exposure, or it may leave the exposure open. Read the current scheme information document, investment strategy and portfolio disclosures for the stated policy and the proportion actually hedged during the period you are examining.
Hedging can reduce the effect of rupee appreciation on the converted value, but it can also reduce the benefit of rupee depreciation. A hedge policy is not the same as a guarantee that the currency effect will be zero: the result can vary with hedge coverage, implementation, costs and timing. The fund’s documents are the authority for what it is permitted and expected to do.
How to reconcile a fund’s foreign-currency and rupee returns
Use the following sequence whenever two performance figures appear inconsistent:
- Identify the return basis. Confirm whether each figure is a NAV return, a total return including distributions, an index return, or a price-only return. Compare like with like.
- Match the dates. Use the same start and end dates. A month-end NAV, a market-close index value and a currency rate taken at different times can produce a gap even when the assets are identical.
- Identify the reporting currency. Establish whether the overseas figure is in dollars, euros, yen or a composite currency. A “global” return may already combine several currencies.
- Map the holdings. Review the latest portfolio to see which countries, securities, overseas funds or indices drive the exposure. Include any Indian assets because they do not carry the same foreign-currency sensitivity.
- Read the hedging disclosure. Determine whether the scheme hedges all, part or none of its exposure, and whether the policy changed during the comparison period.
- Allow for fund-level effects. Expenses, taxes, cash balances, distributions, subscriptions, redemptions and valuation conventions can make the scheme NAV differ from a simple market index converted at a single spot rate.
- Recalculate only as a reasonableness check. Apply the simplified formula to the underlying return and a matching currency move. Treat the result as an approximation, not as a replacement for the fund’s official NAV history.
| Item to compare | Where to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Underlying performance | Fund factsheet, benchmark information or overseas fund report | Shows what the assets did before rupee conversion. |
| Currency exposure | Portfolio and country or currency allocation | Identifies which exchange rates can affect the NAV. |
| Hedging | Current scheme information document and strategy disclosure | Shows whether currency sensitivity is reduced, and to what extent. |
| Return period and basis | NAV history and performance table | Prevents mismatches caused by dates, distributions or calculation methods. |
| Costs and cash flows | Scheme documents and account transaction history | Explains differences between a theoretical conversion and the investor’s realised result. |
Why your personal result may differ from the published rupee return
A published growth figure normally assumes a stated NAV period and reinvestment convention. Your account may differ for several practical reasons:

- Purchase and redemption timing: Your units may have been bought at a different NAV from the period’s starting value.
- Cash flows: A monthly investment or partial withdrawal creates a money-weighted outcome that is not the same as a one-time-period return.
- Distributions: A return that excludes a distribution cannot be compared directly with a total return that includes it.
- Expenses and taxes: Fund expenses reduce NAV, while taxes can reduce the amount you ultimately retain. Their treatment depends on the scheme and the investor’s circumstances.
- Valuation timing: Overseas markets, the Indian market and currency markets do not all close simultaneously. The NAV uses the scheme’s prescribed valuation process.
- Different currency baskets: A broad international portfolio may not move with the single exchange rate you happen to monitor.
These factors mean that attributing the entire difference between a foreign index and an Indian rupee NAV to currency can be misleading.

When the rupee depreciates
For an unhedged foreign-currency holding, depreciation means each unit of foreign currency converts into more rupees. If the overseas assets are flat in their own currency, the conversion can still produce a positive rupee change. If the assets rise as well, the two effects can reinforce each other. However, a sufficiently large fall in the overseas assets can outweigh the currency gain.
When the rupee appreciates
Appreciation means each unit of foreign currency converts into fewer rupees. It can reduce or erase a foreign-currency gain and can deepen a loss. A fund may therefore perform well in its overseas market while delivering a modest or negative result to an Indian investor during a period of rupee strength.

Over longer periods
Exchange rates move in both directions, and their effect compounds with asset returns. A currency move that helps one year can reverse the next. Evaluating a fund over several dates, rather than selecting a single favourable or unfavourable window, gives a more useful view of how much of the outcome came from the portfolio and how much from currency.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong exchange rate: Compare the rupee with the currencies the scheme holds, not automatically with the US dollar.
- Assuming all international funds are unhedged: Verify the policy and actual disclosures.
- Comparing unmatched periods: A fund’s month-end return and an index’s calendar-month return may use different cut-off times.
- Treating a currency gain as a guaranteed return: The portfolio can fall, and mutual funds are not assured-return products.
- Ignoring portfolio changes: Country allocations and hedge ratios can change, so an old currency explanation may not fit a newer period.
- Confusing an index with an investable fund: Fees, tracking differences, cash holdings and tax effects prevent exact replication.
What the official investor disclosures warn
SEBI’s scheme disclosure identifies currency risk in overseas securities and mutual-fund units. It notes that rupee appreciation can reduce yield and rupee depreciation can increase it, subject to the performance of the underlying investments.
“Returns to investors are the result of a combination of returns from investments and from movements in exchange rates.”
AMFI likewise identifies foreign-exchange movements as a factor that may affect returns on redemption and explains that international schemes can use different overseas structures. Its investor-risk material states that NAV can be influenced by currency exchange rates, that mutual-fund schemes are not guaranteed or assured-return products, and that past performance does not guarantee future performance.

Before interpreting or selecting an international fund, ask:
- What countries, securities and currencies does the scheme currently hold?
- Is the exposure hedged, and what portion is covered?
- Am I comparing the same dates and the same return convention?
- How much of the observed result is plausibly explained by the currency move after checking the underlying assets?
- Can I tolerate a period in which overseas markets rise but rupee appreciation reduces my return?
- Am I relying on a historical currency tailwind as though it will continue?
These questions help separate a portfolio decision from a short-term currency prediction. They also make it easier to explain why two funds with similar geographic labels can produce different rupee outcomes.
Bottom line
An Indian investor’s international-fund return is the combined result of overseas investment performance and exchange-rate movement. Rupee depreciation generally helps an unhedged foreign-currency exposure; rupee appreciation generally hurts it. The size of the effect depends on the currencies and holdings actually owned, the fund’s hedging policy, the dates and return basis used, and fund-level costs and cash flows. Read the current scheme disclosures and compare matching data before assigning a fund’s entire rupee result to currency.
