Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStart by reviewing your earnings record in your official my Social Security account for employers or wages you do not recognize. Then check your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts, report suspected identity theft through the FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov, and contact the IRS if the concern involves work or tax returns. These checks cover different kinds of misuse; no single one searches every possible use of your Social Security number.
Which check should you use?
| Possible misuse | Where to check or report it | What the check can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Someone used your SSN for wages or employment | my Social Security; contact SSA about incorrect earnings | Whether wages or employers appear on your Social Security earnings record that do not match your work history |
| Someone opened credit accounts or generated credit activity | Credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com; contact a credit bureau about a fraud alert or freeze | Accounts, inquiries, addresses, or other activity shown on your reports |
| Someone used your SSN for a tax return, refund, or other tax-related abuse | Contact the IRS; SSA lists 1-800-908-4490 in its FAQ | The IRS is the relevant channel for suspected tax-related misuse. Confirm current contact details on IRS.gov before calling. |
| Broader identity theft or exposed SSN | FTC IdentityTheft.gov | A report flow and recovery guidance, including checklists and sample letters |
These routes are not interchangeable: a credit report does not establish whether someone used your SSN for work or taxes, and an earnings record is not a universal search of SSN use.
How to review your Social Security earnings record
- Go directly to the official my Social Security page and sign in using the current sign-in process.
- Open your Social Security Statement and review the earnings history. Look for wages, employers, or years that do not fit your work history.
- If you find an entry you do not recognize, note the year and wage information and follow SSA’s correction instructions.
An unfamiliar entry is a reason to follow up, not proof of who used the number or why. SSA says sometimes more than one person uses the same SSN, intentionally or by accident. The earnings record is a check of earnings reported to Social Security, not a search for every possible use of your number.
How to ask SSA to correct wages that are not yours
SSA’s instructions, updated August 11, 2026, say eligible users can request a correction online. Not everyone is eligible for that route.

- Under Eligibility and Earnings, select Review your full earnings record now.
- Choose Request a correction online and follow the instructions.
If the online option is unavailable, contact or visit a local Social Security office. SSA may ask you to verify your identity, state that the wages are not yours, complete form SSA-7008, and provide supporting records or tax-return copies. Check SSA’s current correction instructions for appointment details and the evidence it requires. Because earnings corrections can affect benefit estimates or eligibility decisions, provide accurate information and supporting documentation.
How to check for credit misuse
Get your credit reports through AnnualCreditReport.com and examine each report for accounts, inquiries, addresses, or other activity you do not recognize. SSA recommends reviewing reports as part of responding to suspected SSN misuse.

- Keep the distinction clear: A report, alert, or freeze concerns credit activity. It does not determine whether your SSN was used for employment or tax purposes.
Where to report suspected identity or tax misuse
Use IdentityTheft.gov for identity theft recovery
SSA says it does not handle identity theft issues and directs people to the FTC. IdentityTheft.gov’s Social Security page provides a reporting flow and recovery guidance, including checklists and sample letters.
Contact the IRS about tax-related use
If you suspect someone used your SSN to work, file a tax return, obtain a refund, or commit other tax-related abuse, contact the IRS. SSA’s FAQ lists 1-800-908-4490 for these concerns, but the number comes from SSA’s FAQ and should be confirmed on IRS.gov before you call. SSA’s guidance on suspected SSN misuse is at its FAQ page.

Keep records and protect your account
- Save copies of unfamiliar credit entries, relevant correspondence, and reports you file.
- If you file a police report with local police or police where the identity theft occurred, keep a copy; SSA recommends retaining it in case problems arise later.
- Use the official my Social Security page directly to review earnings and manage account security.
- Be cautious with unsolicited calls or messages. SSA says it will not threaten to suspend your SSN or demand immediate payment. The SSA Office of the Inspector General warns that impostors may claim they can verify employment or detect fraudulent benefits applications. Do not give personal information or money to someone offering to check your SSN; verify account information directly through SSA.
