How to Check Gold Purity, Hallmarking and Making Charges Before Buying Jewellery in India

Verify the BIS hallmark and HUID, demand an itemised invoice, and compare making charges, wastage, hallmarking fees and GST on the same purity and weight basis.

Before paying for jewellery in India, verify three things: the physical BIS hallmark, the six-character HUID in the BIS Care app, and an invoice that shows the article’s net precious-metal weight, purity, hallmarking charge and all price components. Then compare making charges and GST on the same purity, weight and design basis.

A stamp viewed through a loupe is only a visibility check. HUID verification links the article to BIS information, while a BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre can test the metal if a doubt remains. The steps below apply to consumer purchases in India; hallmarking fees, exemptions, app functions and tax rules can change, so confirm current official details at the time of purchase.

A five-minute check before you pay

  1. Ask to see the hallmark. Request the jeweller’s magnifier and inspect the BIS logo, purity shown in caratage and fineness, and the six-character alphanumeric HUID.
  2. Verify the HUID. Open the official BIS Care app, select Verify HUID, enter the code and compare the returned article and seller information with the piece in your hand.
  3. Inspect every component. Check both earrings, both items in a pair, and each detachable component separately. A pair or detachable part can be replaced, so one visible mark is not enough.
  4. Demand a proper invoice. It should identify each hallmarked article and state its net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charge.
  5. Reconcile the quote. Get the gold rate, net metal weight, making charge and calculation method, any wastage or other line item, hallmarking fee, GST and final amount in writing.

If the HUID lookup does not match the item or seller, pause the transaction and ask the jeweller to resolve the discrepancy. Do not rely on a verbal assurance or a low making-charge advertisement.

What the current BIS hallmark contains

BIS describes the HUID-era hallmark as three elements placed on the article:

#1 Best Overall
Gold Silver Jewelry Tester Appraisal Kit 10K 14K 18K 22K 24K Test Precious Metals 999 925 Scrap
  • ALL-IN-ONE GOLD AND SILVER TESTING & APPRAISAL KIT
  • FUN, FAST, AND ACCURATE! DETERMINES THE KARAT OF GOLD AND SILVER JEWELRY IN SECONDS!
  • 2 AUTHENTIC *LARGE* GTE 2''x 4'' JEWELRY TOUCHSTONES FOR SAFE TESTING THAT WON'T DAMAGE YOUR JEWELRY
  • BONUS* GTE NEUTRALIZER QUICKLY CLEANS STONE
  • A MUST-HAVE FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO INVEST IN GOLD AND SILVER
  • the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) logo;
  • purity expressed in caratage and fineness; and
  • a unique six-character alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code.

Caratage tells you the stated gold grade in the familiar carat format; fineness states the proportion on a parts-per-thousand scale. Record both exactly as printed. If you compare two offers, compare the same stated purity rather than assuming that two pieces labelled “gold” contain the same amount of gold.

A government release says only HUID-hallmarked jewellery is to be sold by BIS-registered jewellers from 1 April 2023. That does not mean every older, inherited or otherwise exempt article must carry the current mark. Rules and exemptions can change, so ask the seller to explain an exception and keep that explanation with the paperwork.

Check pairs and detachable parts

BIS cautions that articles sold as pairs and detachable components can be replaced. Inspect each earring, each bangle component, a pendant and its detachable parts, or any other separable piece individually. Each should carry the applicable hallmark and fineness details. If a component is too small to mark, ask how it is covered on the invoice and request the jeweller’s explanation in writing.

How to verify the HUID in the BIS Care app

  1. Install or open the official BIS Care app on your phone.
  2. Choose Verify HUID.
  3. Enter the six-character alphanumeric code exactly as it appears on the article. Distinguish similar characters such as zero and the letter O.
  4. Review the details returned by BIS, including the article and registered seller information shown by the app.
  5. Compare those details with the physical item, your order and the shop’s displayed BIS registration certificate.
  6. Save a screenshot or note of the result with the invoice, especially for a high-value purchase.

The app check is stronger than simply seeing a stamp because it tests whether the code corresponds to BIS’s record. A result that names a different article, purity or jeweller is a stop signal. Ask the seller to demonstrate the code on the same piece; if the mismatch remains, do not accept the article as verified.

BIS says a jeweller should display its BIS registration certificate. You can ask to see it before placing an order. Registration, however, does not replace checking the individual article and its HUID.

What a loupe can—and cannot—tell you

BIS says the jeweller should have a magnifier of at least 10x so customers can view the hallmark. You may bring an inexpensive jeweller’s loupe, but buying one is optional: ask the shop to provide the magnification first.

Magnification helps you read a tiny logo, purity mark and HUID. It does not prove that the metal meets the stated purity. For that, use the HUID lookup and, where necessary, an assay at a BIS-recognized centre. A sharp-looking stamp, a certificate from the shop or the colour of the metal is not a substitute for those checks.

Invoice details you should not leave without

Ask for an authentic, itemised bill before making the final payment. BIS says the invoice for each hallmarked precious-metal article should include:

  • HANDCRAFTED WOOD STORAGE BOX TO PROTECT AND PROLONG TESTING SOLUTIONS
  • AUTHENTIC GTE 2''x 2'' JEWELRY TOUCHSTONE FOR SAFE TESTING THAT WON'T DAMAGE YOUR JEWELRY
  • A MUST-HAVE for anyone who invests in gold, silver, or platinum!
  • FUN, FAST, AND ACCURATE! DETERMINES THE KARAT OF GOLD, SILVER, AND PLATINUM JEWELRY IN SECONDS!
  • a description or identification of each article;
  • the net weight of precious metal, excluding non-precious stones or other materials as applicable;
  • purity in carat and fineness; and
  • the hallmarking charge.

For your own price audit, request additional lines even when they are not part of the minimum hallmark description:

  • the gold rate used and the date or basis of that rate;
  • net gold weight used for the metal calculation;
  • making charge and the way it is calculated;
  • any wastage, design, stone or other charge;
  • hallmarking fee; and
  • GST and the final amount payable.

Check that the invoice description, weight and purity correspond to the piece and the HUID result. Keep the bill, payment record, HUID result and any written quotation. They are important if the article later needs testing or a complaint.

Making charges: how to compare an apparently cheap quote

Making charges pay for fabrication and design work. They are a seller quote component, not a universal BIS-set rate. The official material reviewed does not establish a fair or standard industry percentage, so a retailer’s “zero making charge” or a personal anecdote cannot be treated as a benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Get the calculation method in writing

A shop may express the charge as a rate applied to metal value, a rate applied to weight, or a flat amount for the design. Those formats are not interchangeable. Ask the salesperson to show the arithmetic and whether the base is gross weight, net precious-metal weight, or another figure. Ask separately whether wastage is included or added.

For example, a quote can be written as:

net gold weight × quoted gold rate = metal value
metal value + making charge + wastage/other charges + hallmarking fee = pre-tax total
pre-tax total + GST = amount payable

The labels and calculation matter more than a headline percentage. A lower making charge can still produce a higher bill if the quote uses a heavier net weight, a higher gold rate, a separate wastage line or a different purity.

Hallmarking is not making or wastage

BIS distinguishes hallmarking charges from making and wastage charges. Hallmarking charges are assessed per article, regardless of jewellery weight, and do not include making or wastage. The BIS FAQ retrieved for this guide displays ₹45 per gold article and a minimum consignment charge, but fee schedules can change and the page’s fee currency is uncertain. Treat that figure as a reference to verify against BIS’s current schedule, not as a guaranteed retail amount.

GST on a jewellery purchase

For jewellery sold to an end customer, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) sectoral FAQ states: “GST is payable at the rate of 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether the making charge is shown separately or not.” In practice, ask the seller to show the GST line and confirm the base used for the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This statement concerns an end-customer jewellery sale. Do not automatically apply it to a separate job-work arrangement or another transaction type. If your invoice combines jewellery and services in an unusual way, ask the seller or a tax professional how the transaction is being treated.

Use one comparison sheet for competing offers

Compare offers only after putting them on the same axes. The following layout prevents a low making charge from hiding a difference in purity or weight.

Comparison field Offer A Offer B What to confirm
Article and design Record description Record description Same or genuinely comparable design and stone content
Stated purity Carat and fineness Carat and fineness HUID result agrees with the mark and invoice
Net precious-metal weight Invoice value Invoice value Exclude non-metal components consistently
Gold rate used Quoted rate Quoted rate Same date or clearly explained rate basis
Making charge Amount and method Amount and method Percentage, per-weight or flat basis; base used
Wastage and other charges Each line Each line Nothing is folded into an unexplained total
Hallmarking fee Per-article amount Per-article amount Separate from making and wastage
GST Tax line Tax line 3% rule for an end-customer jewellery transaction, subject to current tax guidance
Final payable amount Total Total Compare only after every preceding field matches

The financially meaningful comparison is the final amount for equivalent purity, net metal weight and design. A lower making-charge number alone does not establish better value.

When to use independent testing

If the HUID is missing where one should be present, the app result conflicts with the article, or the metal still seems questionable, BIS says consumers may take the jewellery or a sample to any BIS-recognized Assaying and Hallmarking Centre. Testing is chargeable, and the centre issues an assay report identifying the article as marked.

Prepare for the appointment

  • Take the article, invoice and payment proof.
  • Bring the HUID result or a screenshot of the BIS Care lookup.
  • Ask the centre about its current fee, identification requirements and whether any sample removal is necessary.
  • Request and preserve the written assay report.

Testing is the evidentiary route when a visual inspection and database lookup cannot resolve the issue. Do not have the item altered, polished or dismantled before testing if you may need to show its original condition.

If a hallmarked item tests below its marked purity

BIS’s consumer-protection guidance says that when purchased hallmarked jewellery is found to have lower purity than marked, the buyer is entitled to compensation calculated as twice the amount attributable to the purity shortage for the weight sold, plus testing charges, under the applicable rules. The exact claim procedure and rules can change.

  1. Stop using or modifying the article and keep it in its tested condition.
  2. Preserve the original invoice, payment record, HUID result, photographs and assay report.
  3. Ask the seller for a written response and retain all correspondence.
  4. Confirm the current BIS complaint and compensation procedure before filing a claim.

The assay report, rather than a loupe observation or an informal shop test, is the document that establishes a measured purity result for a dispute.

Comparing making-charge percentages alone

Recalculate the complete bill using the same purity, net weight, gold rate, wastage lines, hallmarking fee and GST.

Confusing gross and net weight

Stones, enamel and other materials can make gross weight higher than the precious-metal weight used for the gold calculation. Ask the jeweller to identify the net precious-metal weight explicitly.

Assuming a retailer’s rate is an official standard

BIS does not set a universal consumer making-charge benchmark in the material cited here. Treat every quote as a commercial offer to be itemised and compared.

Leaving without paperwork

An invoice is your evidence of the article, purity, weight and charges. Do not rely on a handwritten promise or an unitemised receipt.

Worked comparison with illustrative numbers

The following example shows the method only; the numbers are hypothetical and are not a market quote.

Line Offer A Offer B
Purity and HUID Same stated purity; HUID matches Same stated purity; HUID matches
Net metal weight 10.00 g 10.40 g
Gold rate ₹6,000/g ₹6,000/g
Metal value ₹60,000 ₹62,400
Making charge ₹4,000 ₹2,000
Wastage/other charges ₹500 ₹0
Hallmarking fee Shown separately Shown separately
GST 3% of the applicable total transaction value 3% of the applicable total transaction value

Offer B advertises a lower making charge, but its heavier net weight may make the final transaction more expensive. The buyer should compare the completed totals, not the making-charge line in isolation. If purity differs, redo the comparison only after deciding whether the different gold content suits the purchase.

Final purchase checklist

  • Is the BIS logo, caratage, fineness and six-character HUID legible?
  • Does Verify HUID in the BIS Care app return information matching the article and seller?
  • Have you inspected both pieces of a pair and all detachable components?
  • Have you seen the jeweller’s BIS registration certificate and 10x magnifier?
  • Does the invoice identify each article and state net precious-metal weight, carat, fineness and hallmarking charge?
  • Are the gold rate, making-charge method, wastage or other charges, hallmarking fee, GST and final amount itemised?
  • Would a BIS-recognized assay be sensible before purchase or if a discrepancy remains?

For an Indian jewellery purchase, the safest sequence is physical inspection, HUID verification, written price reconciliation and preservation of the invoice. Independent assay testing is the escalation route when those records do not settle the question.
