For a large, irreversible or complicated choice, have a suitably qualified human review it.
This is a verification process, not a test of whether a particular chatbot sounds confident. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has warned that financial chatbots can provide inaccurate, unreliable or incomplete information, especially when a person’s situation is complex. No general error rate for AI-generated financial advice has been established by the official material discussed here.

Why an AI answer is not self-validating
Generative AI produces plausible language, not a guarantee that every statement is current, applicable to you or mathematically correct. The CFPB’s June 6, 2023 report Chatbots in consumer finance says chatbots can be wrong and may struggle with complex needs, privacy and security issues, and effective handoff to a human. The agency wrote: “Despite the fact that chatbots can be wrong, users are requesting financial advice from generative chatbots.”

The scale of use makes a verification habit practical rather than optional. The CFPB estimated that about 37% of the U.S. population interacted with a bank chatbot in 2022, representing more than 98 million users. Its result page projected 110.9 million users by 2026; that figure is a projection from the report, not a verified count of current users. Neither adoption figure measures accuracy or establishes an error percentage.

The CFPB’s 2025 Consumer Credit Card Market Report to Congress identifies possible faulty calculations, incomplete assumptions, user implementation mistakes, privacy and data-stewardship risks, fee or referral conflicts, and uncertainty about whether emerging tools have a fiduciary obligation to put users’ interests first. The size of each risk varies by task, product, provider and user circumstances. Treat an AI response as a draft to check, not as an approval to proceed.
A verification workflow you can use before taking action
- Write down the decision and the exact output. Save the prompt, the complete response and the date. State what you might do, such as transfer a balance, refinance, buy an investment, cancel insurance or dispute a charge. Mark every sentence as a factual claim, calculation, assumption or recommendation. Ask the system what facts would change its answer, but regard that list as a starting point rather than proof.
- Identify the jurisdiction and time frame. Note whether the answer depends on U.S. federal law, a particular state, a tax year, a lender’s current policy, a contract version or a promotional period. An answer that omits location or date cannot establish that a rule or price applies to you.
- Trace claims to primary sources. Follow any citation to the underlying government page, statute, regulation, contract, fee schedule, insurance policy, lender disclosure or issuer terms. A search snippet, an AI-generated citation or a secondary summary is not confirmation. For an account-specific matter, use the institution’s known official website, secure message channel or phone number printed on a statement—not contact details supplied only in an unexpected message.
- Confirm current terms directly. Ask the bank, lender, insurer, broker or government office to confirm rates, fees, eligibility, deadlines, penalties, renewal terms and required documents. Request the answer in writing and retain the document. CFPB consumer guidance recommends taking time to read details, ask questions and verify claims through an organization’s official contact channel.
- Recalculate independently. Re-enter balances, rates, dates, payment amounts, compounding frequency, taxes and fees yourself. A basic calculator can check arithmetic in an interest or payment calculation. It cannot determine whether the inputs are accurate, the tax treatment is correct, the product is suitable or the recommendation is lawful.
- Test every assumption. Check income, debt, cash reserve, credit profile, location, tax status, risk tolerance, time horizon, account type and rate. Change one assumption at a time and see whether the result changes materially. If the recommendation fails under a reasonable downside case, pause.
- Search for omissions and alternatives. Read the primary documents for application fees, transfer fees, penalties, taxes, spreads, surrender charges, collateral requirements, loss of benefits, privacy permissions and eligibility conditions. Compare the total cost and risk of the actual alternatives you are considering; do not let an AI invent a comparison set.
- Decide whether to escalate. Contact the institution for account or contract questions. Use a qualified human professional for substantial money, tax questions, debt distress, investments, estate matters, insurance coverage disputes or decisions involving several products. Verify credentials, services, compensation, conflicts and applicable duties.
Match the check to the type of claim
| Claim in the AI response | Independent check | What a successful check establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility, law or product feature | Read the current official rule, disclosure, contract or government guidance for your jurisdiction and date. | The stated rule or feature exists and applies to the identified product and situation. |
| Payment, interest or payoff calculation | Re-enter the original figures in a calculator or spreadsheet and verify the formula, compounding period and fees. | The arithmetic follows from the stated inputs; it does not prove the inputs or recommendation are appropriate. |
| Assumption about your circumstances | Compare each assumption with statements, tax records, account data and your actual time horizon or risk tolerance. | The model is using facts that describe you rather than a generic example. |
| Recommendation or ranking | Compare total cost, risks, eligibility, alternatives, data practices, compensation and available recourse. | You understand the trade-offs; there is no automatic finding that one option is best. |
| Account-specific or contractual answer | Ask the institution through an independently verified official channel and obtain written confirmation. | The party that controls the account or contract has confirmed the operative terms. |
| Credit denial or other adverse action | Request the creditor’s formal adverse-action notice and its specific principal reasons. | You receive the creditor’s legally required explanation, rather than an AI assistant’s guess. |
How to verify rates, fees and deadlines
Terms that change frequently deserve a direct check immediately before you act. Open the institution’s official website by typing the address yourself or use the number on a statement, card or previously verified correspondence. Locate the rate table, fee schedule, agreement, disclosure or deadline notice that governs your product. Save a dated copy or PDF.
Ask precise questions: Is the rate fixed or variable? When can it change and which index or formula applies? Is a quoted fee one-time, recurring or conditional? What event triggers a penalty? What documents establish eligibility? What is the last date to cancel, appeal, transfer or make a payment? Ask the representative to put the answer in a secure message or letter. If the answer conflicts with the contract, request clarification before sending money or signing.
Pressure is a verification failure. CFPB fraud guidance says to walk away when someone will not give you time to read details, ask questions or get advice, and to request information in writing. A legitimate urgency claim still needs an independently verified channel and documentation.
Recalculate numbers without confusing arithmetic with advice
AI can produce a clean-looking table with a faulty formula or an omitted cost. Rebuild the calculation from source documents. Record the principal or balance, annual percentage rate, compounding period, payment frequency, term, taxes, insurance, points, service charges and any promotional expiration date. Check that units match: monthly rates must be paired with monthly periods, and an annual fee must not be treated as a one-time charge.

- User-friendly buttons that are comfortable, durable, and well marked for easy use by all ages, including kids

A basic calculator is useful for this narrow job. Enter the figures yourself and reproduce the AI’s result. If the outputs differ, stop and identify whether the discrepancy comes from rounding, compounding, payment timing or a missing charge. A calculator cannot tell you whether a rate is legally available, whether you qualify, whether a tax assumption is valid or whether taking on the debt fits your budget.
After checking arithmetic, run sensitivity checks. Recalculate with a higher variable rate, a shorter promotional period, a delayed payment, an added fee or a lower income if those outcomes are plausible. A recommendation that works only under an optimistic single set of inputs is not robust evidence.

Expose hidden assumptions
Ask the AI to list the assumptions behind its answer, then verify them one by one. Typical assumptions include a particular state, filing status, income stability, credit score, cash reserve, debt balance, investment horizon, market return, inflation rate, insurance deductible or tolerance for loss. The generated list can itself be incomplete, so compare it with the product’s official disclosures and your records.
Distinguish a fact from a forecast. “This card charges a $X annual fee” can be checked against a current schedule. “You will save $X” depends on spending, timing, eligibility, taxes and behavior. Ask what happens if an assumption is wrong and what evidence would change the recommendation. If the answer does not identify a material uncertainty, that omission is a reason to investigate further.
Look for omitted costs, risks and alternatives
Read beyond the headline rate or projected return. Check origination, transfer, annual, late, foreign-transaction, advisory, trading, surrender and early-termination charges where relevant. Include taxes, insurance, collateral requirements, loss of employer benefits, opportunity cost and the cost of moving or closing an account. Confirm whether a promotional rate expires, whether a balance transfer fee is added to the balance and whether a variable rate can reset.

Compare only real options you have identified. For each, examine total cost over the period you expect to hold it, rates and fees, terms and conditions, eligibility, downside risk, privacy and data use, compensation or referral incentives, and the quality of human support and complaint channels. An AI response that names a “best” product without showing these dimensions has not completed the comparison.

Do not give a general-purpose AI tool your password, one-time verification code, full account number, Social Security number, authentication answers, unredacted statement or more personal information than the task requires. Replace identifying details with fictional labels or remove them from a document before asking for help. Never paste a private link that grants account access.
The CFPB’s 2025 credit-card report flags access to sensitive financial information, data leaks and poor data stewardship as risks in emerging financial tools. Before sharing any information, read the service’s privacy terms, retention and deletion controls, training or human-review disclosures, and permissions for connected accounts. A tool that can read transactions may provide a more tailored answer while creating greater exposure; that trade-off belongs in your decision.
If you already disclosed credentials, contact the institution through its official number, change the affected password, revoke unknown sessions or connections, enable multifactor authentication and monitor statements. Treat an unexpected request for a code or payment as a potential fraud signal.
Check incentives and the duty owed to you
An answer can be technically plausible yet financially misaligned. The CFPB has discussed fees and referral bonuses that may influence emerging AI financial advice and noted that some products may not have a fiduciary obligation to pursue a user’s best interests. Ask who pays the provider, whether a referral or advertising fee is triggered, whether the recommendation is limited to products available through one platform and what conflicts are disclosed.

Do not assume that “advisor,” “coach” or “AI planner” describes a particular legal duty. If you consult a human, verify the person’s credentials, services, compensation method, conflicts and the duties that apply to the service you are receiving. Ask whether the professional can recommend products outside an affiliated lineup and how complaints are handled.
When a human review is the safer next step
Escalate when the amount is substantial relative to your finances, the action is hard to reverse, the facts are unusual, or several areas of law or products interact. Examples include selecting a debt settlement strategy, filing a complex tax position, choosing insurance after a claim, investing money needed for a near-term goal, signing a guaranty, using retirement funds to pay debt, or responding to a foreclosure, collection or bankruptcy issue.
For account-specific matters, the institution is the first escalation point because it can see the operative records and contract. For personalized planning, seek a qualified professional whose credentials and compensation you can verify. Give that person the AI output as a question list, not as an instruction. Ask them to identify incorrect facts, missing alternatives, conflicts and the assumptions that drive the result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Credit decisions: rely on the creditor’s notice
If a lender denies an application, reduces a limit or takes another adverse action, request the formal notice from the creditor. CFPB Circular 2022-03 states that creditors using complex algorithms, including artificial intelligence or machine learning, must provide the specific principal reasons for the action. The CFPB has also said: “Creditors must be able to specifically explain their reasons for denial. There is no special exemption for artificial intelligence.”
This requirement concerns U.S. creditor notices. An AI assistant’s explanation is not a substitute for the lender’s notice and may be speculative. Compare the notice with your application and credit reports, correct factual errors through the creditor’s stated process and seek qualified help if the explanation appears incomplete or inconsistent with applicable law. Because legal and regulatory requirements can change, check current official CFPB and creditor materials for a time-sensitive dispute.

How to recognize an unsafe AI recommendation
- It guarantees approval, savings, returns or a risk-free outcome.
- It gives a precise answer without asking for the jurisdiction, date, product terms or material personal facts.
- Its citation cannot be opened, leads only to a snippet or does not support the stated claim.
- It discourages you from contacting the institution or obtaining a second opinion.
- It urges immediate payment, disclosure of credentials or transfer of funds.
- It ignores taxes, fees, penalties, eligibility, privacy or downside scenarios.
- It recommends a product while hiding who pays for the referral or what alternatives were excluded.
- It changes its answer when you repeat the question but cannot explain which fact caused the change.
One warning sign does not prove that an answer is false. It tells you to increase the level of independent checking and avoid acting under pressure.
If you are comparing AI tools
Compare named tools only when you have evidence for each one. Use the same verification questions for every candidate:
- Evidence and freshness: Does it identify primary sources, dates and jurisdiction, and can you open the cited material?
- Assumption transparency: Does it show the inputs and explain what would change the result?
- Reproducibility: Can you reproduce the arithmetic outside the tool?
- Privacy and access: What data does it collect, retain or connect to, and can permissions be revoked?
- Fees and incentives: Are subscriptions, referrals, commissions or affiliated-product limits disclosed?
- Scope and limits: Does it clearly distinguish education from account-specific, tax, legal or regulated advice?
- Human escalation and recourse: Can you reach a qualified person, correct an error and make a complaint?
Do not award a score without verifiable evidence for the specific tool. A general chatbot, a specialized financial application and a calculator perform different jobs; none becomes a complete verification system merely by producing a confident explanation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThree examples of the process
Evaluating a balance-transfer suggestion
Write down the proposed transfer amount, promotional rate and end date. Confirm the transfer fee, standard rate after the promotion, minimum payment, eligibility and whether the fee is added to the balance in the issuer’s current disclosure. Recalculate the payment needed to clear the balance before the promotion ends, then test a late transfer, a smaller payment and the post-promotion rate. Compare the total cost with keeping the existing balance or using another documented option. Do not transfer until the issuer confirms the terms in writing.
Checking a debt-payoff plan
List every balance, rate, minimum payment, due date and penalty from statements. Reproduce the payoff schedule and include fees and taxes the AI omitted. Test an income interruption and an unexpected expense. Confirm whether consolidation changes collateral, rate variability, access to credit or eligibility for hardship programs. If the plan involves collections, settlement, retirement withdrawals or legal consequences, obtain qualified human advice before acting.
Reviewing an investment explanation
Separate factual statements about the security or account from forecasts about return. Verify fees, liquidity, tax treatment, restrictions, loss potential and the time horizon in official documents. Ask what happens in a large decline and whether the money is needed for a near-term goal. Check the provider’s compensation and conflicts. An AI-generated allocation is not a substitute for assessing capacity and tolerance for loss with a qualified professional.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Official CFPB material supports a cautious process: verify sources, numbers, assumptions, terms, privacy and incentives, and escalate complex decisions. It does not establish that every AI assistant is unreliable, that a particular provider has a known error probability or that chatbot adoption predicts advice quality. The 37% and 98 million figures describe estimated 2022 bank-chatbot use, while the 110.9 million figure is a report projection for 2026. The 2025 credit-card report expressly notes substantial uncertainty about the magnitude of both benefits and risks.
Bottom line
Use AI to generate questions, organize information or show a calculation you can reproduce—not to authorize a financial action. Before acting, verify the claim in current primary documents, recompute the figures, challenge the assumptions, identify omitted costs and conflicts, protect your data and obtain the institution’s written confirmation. When the decision is large, irreversible, personalized or legally complex, put a qualified human between the AI output and your money.
