To cancel an online order, open the retailer’s order details or purchase history, find the order, and use its cancellation option as soon as possible. If there is no button, check the order’s fulfillment status and the seller’s policy, then contact the seller promptly using a method that leaves a record. Whether cancellation is still possible—and whether you have a legal right to cancel—depends on the retailer, order status, product, and where you live.
How to request a cancellation
- Find the order. Open your confirmation email or sign in to the retailer’s account. Go to Purchase history, My Orders, or the equivalent order-details page. For example, Walmart directs customers to Purchase history; GameStop account holders use Account → My Orders → Orders, while guest customers can use Track Order. These are retailer-specific examples, not universal menu labels.
- Check for a cancellation option and act quickly. If you see Cancel Order or a cancellation-request option, select it and follow the prompts. Save the confirmation. The option may depend on the order’s status, type, location, and the seller’s cutoff. Walmart says most Pickup, Delivery, and Shipping orders can be edited or cancellation-requested before processing; its cutoff varies by order type and location. See Walmart’s order-editing guidance.
- If the option is missing, check status and policy. The order may already be in fulfillment, packaged, or shipped. GameStop says cancellation is available only before packaging is complete and that support cannot override a missing cancellation button. That is GameStop’s policy, not a rule for all retailers. - Contact the seller in a traceable way. Use the contact method specified in the order page or policy. State the order number, identify the item or items, and clearly request cancellation. Keep a screenshot or copy of the request and note when you sent it. The FTC advises consumers to keep order records and communications. FTC guidance on order records and shipping problems.
- Get the result in writing. Save the seller’s response, cancellation confirmation, and any refund details. If the seller says the order has shipped, check its return policy and any local cancellation or withdrawal rights that apply to your purchase.
What to do if the order is already being fulfilled or shipped
A missing button does not, by itself, tell you whether you have a legal right to cancel. It may simply mean the retailer’s self-service window has closed. Contact the seller through its published channel and ask whether it can stop the shipment or explain the available return process. Costco, Walmart, and GameStop all illustrate how retailer procedures can depend on processing or item status; check the policy for your actual order rather than relying on another retailer’s rules.
If cancellation is unavailable and the parcel arrives, review the seller’s return instructions before sending anything back. A return after delivery is a separate process from canceling an order before shipment. Keep tracking information and all messages in case you need to show what happened.
When a shipping delay may give you a cancellation right
In the United States, the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule addresses shipping delays for covered merchandise orders; it is not a general right to cancel any order simply because you changed your mind. A seller generally must ship within the time it stated or, if it stated no time, within 30 days. If it cannot meet the applicable date, the Rule generally requires notice and a choice between agreeing to the delay and canceling for a prompt refund. The FTC’s consumer guidance puts the delay choice plainly: “If there’s a delay shipping your order, the seller has to tell you and give you the choice of either agreeing to the delay or canceling your order for a full refund.” Read the FTC consumer guidance.
Cancellation rights depend on where you live and what you bought
United States
The federal shipping rule above concerns shipment timing and qualifying delays; it does not create a blanket change-of-mind cancellation window for online purchases. The FTC’s three-business-day Cooling-Off Rule is also not a general three-day right to cancel an ordinary online order. Quebec
Quebec’s consumer-protection office describes cancellation rights for certain purchases when delivery commitments are missed, with specified notice steps and deadlines. Its guidance includes a 15-day return window in covered circumstances. These provisions have exceptions and should not be applied to purchases outside Quebec or assumed to cover every transaction. United Kingdom
Which? describes a cancellation period for many online goods that begins at purchase and ends 14 days after delivery, subject to exceptions. That timing is specific to the UK context and does not apply globally. Check current official guidance and the retailer’s terms for your product and situation. Keep records if the seller disputes your request
Save the order confirmation, the policy shown when you ordered, your cancellation request and its timestamp, seller replies, tracking details, and payment records. Use the retailer’s published escalation route if the issue remains unresolved, and consult the consumer-protection authority for your location. There is no single dispute deadline or remedy that applies to every payment method and transaction, so check the terms relevant to your case.
