To calculate your chance of winning, define the prize you mean, count all possible draw outcomes, count the outcomes that win that prize, then divide: probability = favorable outcomes ÷ total outcomes. For one exact jackpot line, that is usually one winning combination out of every possible combination. The result depends on the game’s current rules and prize tier—not on a universal “lottery odds” figure.
First decide what “winning” means
A jackpot and any prize are different events. A ticket might win a lower-tier prize without matching the full jackpot combination, so its chance of winning any prize is not the same as its chance of winning the jackpot. Choose the exact prize tier before calculating, and use that game’s rules to determine what matches qualify.
For example, Powerball’s official information lists jackpot odds of 1 in 292.2 million and overall odds of winning a prize of 1 in 24.9. Those figures describe different outcomes, not competing estimates of the same chance. Powerball’s official game information does not state a publication year for its current odds table; the figures were verified on October 8, 2026.
Calculate the number of possible outcomes
Use combinations when order does not matter
If a draw selects k distinct numbers from a pool of N, and a ticket matches the set regardless of draw order, the number of possible selections is the combination:

C(N, k) = N! ÷ [k!(N − k)!]
The exclamation mark means factorial: for example, 5! = 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1. A combination counts each set once. Selecting 3, 11, 22, 37, and 58 is the same outcome whichever order the balls are drawn.
Include any separate bonus-number pool
If the jackpot also requires one number from a separate pool of M possible values, multiply the main-pool combinations by M:
Total jackpot combinations = C(N, k) × M
One exact line is one combination, so its jackpot probability is 1 ÷ [C(N, k) × M]. To express a probability as a percentage, multiply it by 100. To express it as “1 in N,” use the total number of combinations as N.

Work out the chance of a lower-tier prize
For a prize requiring exactly r matches among the k main numbers, the number of ways to match exactly those main numbers is:
C(k, r) × C(N − k, k − r)
The first term counts which of your selected numbers match; the second counts which drawn numbers come from the numbers you did not select. If the prize also depends on a bonus ball, multiply by the probability of matching or missing that ball, as the prize rules specify. Divide the resulting favorable outcomes by all possible draw outcomes to get the probability of that tier.
For instance, if a tier requires a specified number of main-ball matches but no bonus-ball match, the calculation must include both the ways to get the required main matches and the ways to miss the bonus ball. Do not assume that a lower tier has the same favorable-outcome count as the jackpot: each tier’s matching rules define a different event. The Florida Lottery’s Powerball probability explanation works through prize-level calculations; its publication date is not stated.

Current U.S. examples: Powerball and Mega Millions
These examples apply to the number pools and odds published on the games’ official pages, checked October 8, 2026. They are U.S. multi-state games, not universal lottery rules. The pages do not state a publication year for their current odds tables.
| Game and event | Number pools | Calculation or published odds |
|---|---|---|
| Powerball jackpot, one play | Five white balls from 1–69; one Powerball from 1–26 | C(69, 5) = 11,238,513; 11,238,513 × 26 = 292,201,338 combinations. Chance: 1 in 292,201,338, rounded by Powerball to 1 in 292.2 million. |
| Powerball, any prize, one play | Same current format | Official overall odds: 1 in 24.9. |
| Mega Millions jackpot, one play | Five different white balls from 1–70; one Mega Ball from 1–24 | Official jackpot odds: 1 in 290,472,336. |
For Powerball, the total follows from counting every five-white-ball set and pairing each with one of 26 Powerballs. The official Powerball information gives the current format and published odds; the Minnesota Lottery’s “Figuring the Odds” explanation and Florida Lottery worked example show combination-based methods. The Minnesota page contains inconsistent intermediate figures in its Mega Millions worked calculation, so use the official game’s published jackpot odds rather than those intermediate numbers.

For Mega Millions, the current official How to Play page specifies the number pools and publishes jackpot odds of 1 in 290,472,336. It is not necessary to rely on an intermediate calculation from another source to report that official figure.
Translate probability into odds people can read
A probability of 1/292,201,338 can be written as “1 in 292,201,338” or as approximately 0.000000342%. The “1 in N” form is often clearer for very small chances. In everyday speech, people use “odds” to mean chance; in formal betting terminology, odds can instead mean a ratio of wins to losses. State which format you are using so the number is not ambiguous.

Multiple distinct lines in one drawing
If there are T possible jackpot combinations and you hold n distinct lines for the same drawing, your chance that at least one line wins the jackpot is n ÷ T, provided no line is duplicated. A repeated line does not cover a new combination. The chance for each individual line remains unchanged; more distinct lines only cover more of the possible combinations.
One line across several independent drawings
If one line has probability p of winning the jackpot in a drawing, and you enter the same line in d independent drawings with the same rules, the chance of at least one jackpot is:

1 − (1 − p)d
This subtracts the chance of no jackpot in every drawing from 1. The formula assumes independent drawings and unchanged odds across the period. If the game format changes, do not combine drawings under one fixed probability without recalculating.
Can number patterns or Quick Picks improve the probability?
In a fair draw, every valid jackpot combination is one possible outcome among the total. A frequently drawn number, a sequence, or a Quick Pick does not make an individual valid line more likely to match. A selection method can change which numbers you choose, but it does not change the probability of that exact combination being drawn.
Compare games using the same measure
Do not compare one game’s jackpot odds with another game’s overall odds. Decide which outcome matters, then compare like with like using each game’s current official rules.
- Jackpot chance: probability that one play matches the full jackpot combination.
- Any-prize chance: probability that one play reaches any listed prize tier; this may include small prizes and is not a jackpot estimate.
- Prize structure: lower tiers have their own match requirements, and a jackpot may be shared when multiple tickets win.
- Cost and jurisdiction: play prices, availability, and rules can vary or change; check the official game and local lottery information before relying on them.
The current published jackpot figures—1 in 292,201,338 for Powerball and 1 in 290,472,336 for Mega Millions—are close, but that comparison alone does not establish which game is better for a particular player. The intended prize, cost, prize distribution, and local rules also matter.

Check rules before relying on a number
Lottery number pools and prize structures can change. A calculation using an older pool can produce an accurate answer for a past version of the game and a wrong answer for the current one. Before calculating, verify the game’s current official number ranges, bonus-ball pool, prize-tier matching rules, and published odds table. Keep the game, prize tier, and rules context beside any figure you share.
