How to Calculate Credit Card Payments and Costs

Estimate card interest using your balance categories, APRs, issuer’s calculation method, and transaction timing. Your statement and agreement determine the actual charge and required payment.

To estimate the interest on a U.S. credit card, identify each balance and its APR, use the periodic rate and balance method in your card agreement, and account for the days in the billing cycle and the timing of payments and credits. To find your required payment, use the minimum-payment amount on your statement. The exact interest charge and minimum depend on your account terms, so treat a calculation as an estimate unless it follows your issuer’s agreement and transaction timing.

How does a credit card company calculate interest?

Interest depends on more than the account’s headline APR. Purchases, balance transfers, and cash advances can have different APRs and separate balances. Your statement should show balance categories with different rates, while your card agreement explains the issuer’s calculation method. The CFPB explains the daily-interest approach in its guidance on how credit card interest is calculated.

  1. Separate the balances by category. Record the balance and APR for purchases, transfers, cash advances, and any promotional balance shown on your statement.
  2. Find the periodic rate and balance method. If your issuer uses a daily periodic rate, it generally derives that rate by dividing the APR by 360 or 365, depending on the agreement. Do not assume every issuer uses the same divisor or balance method; see the CFPB’s daily periodic rate explanation and your own contract.
  3. Apply the rate to the applicable balances. For a simplified daily estimate, multiply each day’s balance by its daily periodic rate and add the daily charges across the billing cycle. Some agreements instead express the calculation as average daily balance multiplied by daily periodic rate and billing-cycle days.
  4. Account for activity and contract details. Purchases, payments, credits, fees, promotional rates, daily compounding, and issuer rounding may affect the result. Reconcile your estimate with the statement; the agreement governs your account’s precise calculation.

Set up an estimate without guessing your issuer’s terms

For each balance category, write down its APR, the periodic rate stated or described in the agreement, and the relevant daily balances or average daily balance. Apply the rate using the issuer’s stated method and billing-cycle days, then account for transaction timing, payments, credits, fees, promotional terms, and rounding. Without those account-specific details, the result is only an estimate—not a prediction of the exact bill.

How do you calculate the required payment?

There is no single minimum-payment formula that applies to every card. Issuers use the formula or formulas in the account agreement, so check the statement for the amount due and the agreement for how it is determined. Regulation Z’s repayment-estimate rules also refer to the minimum-payment formula applicable to the account; the CFPB’s Appendix M1 to Regulation Z describes the regulatory framework.

Use the statement’s minimum as the required payment for that billing cycle. A calculator or spreadsheet can help you compare possible payment amounts, but it does not replace the issuer’s statement or determine the required amount.

What does the 36-month payment on a statement mean?

Credit card statements must include an estimate of how long it would take to repay the current balance with minimum payments and the monthly payment amount needed to repay that balance in 36 months. The disclosure calculation assumes no future purchases. The 36-month figure is a comparison amount, not a required payment. Paying more than the minimum generally reduces both payoff time and total interest. The CFPB explains this statement box in its guidance on paying off a balance in three years.

When comparing payment scenarios, consider the estimated total interest, months to payoff, monthly cash required, whether future purchases are assumed, and how separate or promotional APR balances are handled. A scenario is useful for planning, but actual results depend on the account terms and transaction dates.

How are payments split across balances?

When a payment exceeds the minimum, the amount above the minimum generally goes first to the balance with the highest APR, then to other balances in descending APR order. The issuer generally determines how the minimum-payment portion is allocated. Check your statement for separate purchase, balance-transfer, cash-advance, and promotional balances; a payment may not reduce every category in the same way.

Can a grace period prevent interest?

A grace period is the time between the billing-cycle close and payment due date during which a cardholder may avoid interest on purchases by paying the balance in full by the due date. Issuers are not required to offer one, and account rules vary. The CFPB describes credit-card grace periods and notes that the agreement determines the relevant terms.

If interest applies, many issuers calculate it from the transaction date until payment is received, subject to the contract. Where interest is calculated daily, paying earlier can reduce the balance on which later daily charges are based. Check the agreement and statement for how your issuer treats timing and balances.
