To estimate a Saudi gold-jewelry purchase, multiply the current price per gram for the item’s karat by its net gold weight, add the seller’s making charge, and then account for applicable VAT: estimated total = (karat-specific SAR/g × gold grams) + making charge + applicable VAT. Keep metal value, workmanship and tax separate, because they affect both quote comparisons and resale expectations.
What “value” means for Saudi gold jewelry
A jewelry quote contains more than the value of the gold itself. The metal component depends on two measurable inputs: purity (karat) and net gold weight. The seller then adds workmanship, often called the making charge, and the transaction may include VAT. A high retail price does not necessarily mean a piece contains more gold; it may reflect intricate workmanship, a designer premium or a higher tax-inclusive total.

For a purchase estimate, use this structure:
Estimated total = (current price per gram for the stated karat × net gold weight in grams) + making charge + applicable VAT.

If the making charge is quoted per gram, multiply that charge by the piece’s net gold weight before adding it. If it is quoted as one amount for the item, add the total once. The seller’s tax invoice remains the authoritative amount for the actual transaction.

For resale, the calculation changes. A dealer normally starts with the current value of the accepted gold content and does not add back the original making charge or purchase tax. Testing results, accepted weight and the dealer’s deductions determine the final offer.
The five inputs you need before calculating
1. Karat or fineness
Karat identifies the share of gold in the alloy. Pure gold is treated as 24K; lower-karat jewelry contains other metals for strength, color or manufacturing properties. The Saudi Ministry of Commerce Merchant Guide identifies common grades as follows:
| Marking | Gold content stated in the Merchant Guide | Approximate share of 24K gold |
|---|---|---|
| 24K | 24 parts out of 24 | 100% |
| 22K | 916.6 parts per thousand | 22/24, or about 91.66% |
| 21K | 875 parts per thousand | 21/24, or 87.5% |
Read the karat from the hallmark, invoice or seller’s documentation, but do not treat a visual mark as conclusive authentication. A scale measures mass, not purity. If the marking is unclear or the value is substantial, ask the seller how karat was tested and have the result recorded on the invoice.

Use grams of gold, not automatically the entire item’s weight. Stones, enamel, clasps made from other materials and removable components can make the total scale reading higher than the gold weight. Ask for the net gold weight used in the calculation. The invoice is preferable; a precise gram scale can be a cross-check when the item is free of stones or other attached materials.
3. A current rate for the same karat
Obtain a live Saudi-riyal price per gram and make sure it corresponds to the stated karat. Gold prices change throughout the market day, so a rate copied from an old article or an undated screenshot is not a current quote. Gold.sa explains the purchase calculation as the applicable gram price multiplied by weight: Gold.sa’s Saudi buying calculation guide.
If only a 24K reference is available, a proportional estimate is:
Estimated karat rate = 24K rate × karat ÷ 24.
This proportional conversion is an estimate for checking arithmetic. For a real shop comparison, use a current rate explicitly stated for the jewelry’s karat whenever possible.

4. Making charge
Making charge is the workmanship cost. It varies with the trader, design complexity, finishing and whether the seller quotes by gram or for the complete item. Ask one precise question: “Is this making charge per gram or the total for this piece?” Record the answer and the unit before comparing shops.
5. Applicable VAT and the final invoice
Saudi Arabia’s standard VAT rate is 15%; ZATCA says the increase took effect on July 1, 2020. Its VAT overview is available at ZATCA’s VAT information page. VAT treatment can depend on the supply, so do not assume that every gold item is treated as investment metal.
Step-by-step: calculate a purchase quote
- Identify the karat. Write down the exact marking, such as 21K or 22K, and ask that it appear on the invoice.
- Confirm net gold grams. Use the invoice or ask the seller to explain deductions for stones and non-gold parts. Do not substitute the gross scale reading without confirmation.
- Capture the rate and its time. Note the SAR-per-gram rate, karat, date and time shown by the shop or rate service. A rate for 24K is not automatically a 21K rate.
- Calculate the metal component. Multiply the matching rate by the net gold weight.
- Add workmanship once. Multiply a per-gram making charge by the relevant grams; add a total making charge only once.
- Determine VAT treatment. Check whether the quoted components are VAT-inclusive or exclusive and how VAT is shown on the tax invoice. Do not add 15% a second time to a price that already includes it.
- Reconcile the final total. Compare your arithmetic with the seller’s itemized quote and tax invoice before paying.
A worksheet can be as simple as:
| Line | How to calculate it | Your entry |
|---|---|---|
| Net gold value | karat-specific SAR/g × net gold grams | _____ SAR |
| Making charge | per-gram charge × grams, or stated item total | _____ SAR |
| Tax | VAT shown by the seller for the taxable supply | _____ SAR |
| Final amount | metal value + making charge + applicable VAT | _____ SAR |
For an arithmetic illustration only, suppose a seller states a particular karat rate of R SAR per gram, net gold weight of W grams and a total making charge of M SAR. Before tax, the subtotal is (R × W) + M. Insert the VAT amount shown on that seller’s invoice; do not treat the variables as a market price.
How purity changes the metal value
Two pieces that weigh the same can have different metal values because a 22K alloy contains more gold than a 21K alloy. If a 24K reference rate is the only available benchmark, the proportional relationships are:
| Piece | Proportional metal-rate estimate from a 24K benchmark | What it does not include |
|---|---|---|
| 22K | 24K rate × 22 ÷ 24 | Making charge, VAT, stones and dealer deductions |
| 21K | 24K rate × 21 ÷ 24 | Making charge, VAT, stones and dealer deductions |
The 916.6 and 875 fineness figures are useful when checking that the karat on a quote matches the stated purity. They do not, by themselves, tell you today’s SAR price. A rate must still be current and tied to the same karat.
VAT: what a buyer should check in Saudi Arabia
Standard rate and price display
ZATCA’s standard VAT rate is 15%. Separately, the Ministry of Commerce says displayed shelf prices should include VAT and match the checkout price. Its consumer notice states: “The Ministry of Commerce has confirmed that the prices of the products offered in the markets include the VAT (Value Added Tax).” Read the notice at the Ministry of Commerce VAT-inclusive pricing announcement.
A retailer may still provide an itemized quotation that shows the pre-tax components and VAT line. The practical check is that the final displayed or charged amount follows the applicable rules and agrees with the tax invoice. If a shelf label and checkout total differ, ask the retailer to correct the discrepancy before completing the purchase.

Why ordinary jewelry should not be treated as investment metal
ZATCA’s implementing regulations define qualifying investment metal as gold, silver or platinum with purity of at least 99% that is tradeable on the global bullion market. The regulation also specifies zero-rating for the first supply by its producer or refiner. See Article 36 and related provisions in the VAT Implementing Regulations PDF.
Most wearable jewelry is not automatically qualifying investment metal. A 21K or 22K ornament, for example, is below the 99% purity threshold described for that category, and workmanship makes it different from bullion. Confirm the seller’s VAT treatment on the invoice rather than assuming a special zero rate applies.
Comparing two jewelry quotes fairly
Put competing offers on the same basis. A lower headline price can simply reflect less gold, a lower karat, an omitted making charge or a tax-exclusive figure.
| Comparison item | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Karat or fineness | Is each piece 21K, 22K or another stated grade? | A different purity means a different metal rate. |
| Net gold weight | How many grams of gold remain after excluding stones and other parts? | Gross jewelry weight can overstate gold content. |
| Current rate | What SAR/g rate and timestamp did the seller use? | Gold prices are volatile and rates must match karat. |
| Making charge | Is it per gram or a total, and what work does it cover? | The same percentage of gold can carry very different workmanship costs. |
| VAT | Is the quote tax-inclusive, and is VAT itemized on the invoice? | Pre-tax and final prices are not interchangeable. |
| Final total | What amount will be charged at checkout? | This is the amount to compare, not an isolated gram rate. |
For a piece with stones, request both gross weight and net gold weight in writing. If one shop calculates on all grams and another excludes stones, their gram prices cannot be compared until the weight basis is identical.
Worked comparison using variables, not a market quote
Consider two 21K rings that each have an invoice-confirmed net weight but different workmanship charges. Let the current 21K rate be G SAR/g. Ring A weighs W₁ grams and has a per-gram making charge of C₁; Ring B weighs W₂ grams and has a total making charge of M₂. Their pre-VAT subtotals are:

Apply the VAT amount stated for each taxable supply, then compare the final invoice totals. This exposes whether Ring B is cheaper because it contains less gold or because its workmanship is lower; a single “price per gram” label would hide that distinction.
How to estimate what a dealer may pay when you sell
Resale is not the reverse of a retail purchase. Start with the current price per gram for the tested karat and the weight the dealer accepts as gold. Gold.sa describes this approach in its Saudi gold-selling calculation guide.

A practical estimate is:
Estimated resale basis = current karat-specific SAR/g × accepted net gold grams.
The dealer’s actual payout may then be lower because of testing, refining, handling or other stated deductions. The original making charge and purchase taxes are generally not added back to your payout. Ask the buyer to write down:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- the karat result after testing;
- the grams accepted as gold, separately from stones and non-gold parts;
- every deduction and whether it is a percentage or fixed amount; and
- the final SAR amount you will receive.
If the buyer quotes only one final number, request the underlying rate, weight and deductions. You can then obtain a second offer on the same facts. A precise home scale is useful for spotting a large weight discrepancy, but it cannot establish karat or predict the dealer’s testing result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Jewelry with stones, hollow sections or non-gold parts
Gold-content calculations become less certain when a piece includes diamonds, gemstones, enamel, springs, plated components or hollow construction. Do not multiply the current rate by the entire scale weight unless the seller confirms that the entire weight is gold of the stated karat.
Ask whether stones are valued separately or excluded entirely. A retail seller may price a stone as part of the finished item, while a gold buyer may pay only for recoverable metal. Those are different transactions, so a retail appraisal should not be used as a guaranteed resale payout.
Tools and documents that improve accuracy
- Invoice or tax invoice: the best record of karat, net weight, making charge, VAT and final price.
- Digital gram scale: an optional check of weight when the item can be weighed meaningfully; it cannot test purity.
- Hallmark or purity documentation: useful evidence to discuss with the seller, but not a substitute for an appropriate test when authenticity is in doubt.
- Written rate timestamp: prevents a later change in the live market rate from making the quote impossible to audit.
- Calculator or spreadsheet: keep metal, workmanship, tax and deductions in separate cells rather than entering one combined number.
For a large purchase, photograph the item and invoice together, retain the seller’s stated karat and weight, and check that the charged amount matches the tax invoice before leaving the shop.
Common calculation mistakes and how to fix them
Using the wrong karat rate
A 24K rate multiplied directly by 21K jewelry overstates the metal estimate. Use a 21K rate or apply the proportional 21 ÷ 24 conversion only as an estimate.

Multiplying by gross weight
Stones and other materials inflate gross weight. Require the net gold grams used by the seller and record how that number was obtained.
Adding a per-gram making charge as though it were a total
Read the unit. A charge of SAR X per gram must be multiplied by the relevant grams; a stated SAR Y for the complete item must not be multiplied again.
Adding VAT twice
First determine whether the displayed or quoted amount already includes VAT. Then compare the final charge with the invoice. The 15% standard rate is not a license to add another 15% to an already tax-inclusive total.

Assuming every gold product receives investment-metal treatment
The qualifying rule described by ZATCA requires at least 99% purity and global-bullion tradability. Ordinary jewelry should be checked against the invoice and current rules rather than presumed zero-rated.
Expecting to recover retail workmanship on resale
A dealer’s offer is based on tested, accepted metal and stated deductions. Original making charges and purchase taxes generally do not return to the seller.
Treating a scale as a purity test
Mass and purity are separate measurements. Use a scale for the weight input only; ask for an appropriate purity test when the karat matters.
A buyer’s checklist before paying
- Does the invoice state the karat or fineness?
- Is net gold weight separated from stones and other materials?
- Is the SAR-per-gram rate current and for the same karat?
- Is the making charge clearly labeled per gram or total?
- Is VAT included, itemized and consistent with the final displayed price?
- Does your calculation reconcile with the tax invoice?
- For a resale quote, are testing, accepted grams, deductions and payout written down?
Authoritative references for the calculation
The Ministry of Commerce Merchant Guide contains the cited 22K and 21K fineness figures: Merchant Guide PDF. ZATCA’s general VAT background is at About VAT, and the detailed investment-metal provisions are in its VAT Implementing Regulations. The practical answer
For a purchase, calculate the current same-karat rate times the invoice-confirmed net gold grams, add the making charge in the correct unit, and verify VAT and the final tax-inclusive amount on the invoice. For a sale, use tested karat and accepted gold weight, then subtract the dealer’s stated deductions; do not expect the original workmanship or purchase tax to be returned. Keeping those components separate is the most reliable way to judge whether a Saudi jewelry quote is reasonable.
