Comparing the final tax-inclusive amount—not just a making-charge percentage—gives you a more reliable basis for choosing between quotes.
What goes into the total cost?
Use this reconciliation:
Total payable = metal value + making charge + other disclosed charges + GST − discounts or credits.
Use the amounts and tax treatment shown in the dated quote and final invoice. Ask the jeweler to explain each line item, including whether a charge is already included in another figure; otherwise, it can be counted twice.
How to calculate the gold price in India
- Confirm net gold weight. Use the net weight of the gold, not the jewelry’s gross weight when stones or other materials are included. For a hallmarked article, BIS says the invoice should state the net precious-metal weight.
- Record the rate basis. Ask for the rate, unit, date or session, and whether it applies to 24-karat gold or the item’s stated purity.
- Calculate metal value. If the rate is quoted per gram for the item’s purity, multiply it by the item’s net gold grams. If the seller quotes a 24-karat rate for lower-fineness jewelry, ask how the seller converts it. Do not apply a purity adjustment to a rate already quoted for the item’s karat.
For example, when a quote gives a per-gram rate for the jewelry’s purity, the calculation is: rate per gram × net gold grams = metal value. This is a calculation method, not a current gold-price quote.

How to add making charges and other fees
Making charge
Add the making charge in rupees as shown on the quote. If the seller gives a percentage or per-gram rate instead, ask what amount it produces for this specific item and have the basis recorded. The official sources cited here do not establish a standard making-charge percentage, so compare actual rupee amounts and final totals rather than assuming one charge format is cheaper.
Wastage, stones and other disclosed charges
Ask what each separate charge covers and whether it is already included in the metal value or another line. Stones and other materials may affect an item’s weight and price; make sure you understand which weight is being priced and what each charge represents before adding it to your calculation.

Hallmarking charge
Hallmarking charges are not making or wastage charges. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) says hallmarking charges do not include making or wastage charges. Its Hallmarking FAQ lists ₹45 per gold article and a ₹200 minimum consignment charge, with applicable taxes or levies potentially extra; these are BIS hallmarking-service charges, not a jeweler’s making charge or a retail price estimate. Confirm current charges before relying on those figures.
How GST applies to the final transaction
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) states that GST on jewelry sold to an end consumer is 3% of the total transaction value, whether making charges are shown separately or not. CBIC’s rate table also lists precious-metal jewelry under HSN 7113 at 3%. These are the official guidance and rate information available from CBIC; check current rules and the seller’s tax invoice at purchase time. Apply tax to the transaction as described on the invoice and applicable rules rather than substituting a different calculation from an unofficial calculator.

Worked calculation: use the amounts in your quote
Suppose a seller’s dated quote gives a rate per gram for the item’s purity and states the net gold weight, making charge, other charges and any discount. First multiply the rate by net gold grams to get metal value. Add the quoted making charge and any genuinely separate charges, apply GST to the transaction as the invoice and applicable rules specify, then subtract the discount or credit recorded on the invoice. The result is the amount to compare with another quote for an equivalent item.

No current gold rate or universal making-charge amount is assumed here: both depend on the dated seller quote and the specific jewelry.

Compare offers for the same or genuinely equivalent item. A different design or stone content can make two pieces non-equivalent even when their headline making-charge percentages look similar.

- Purity or fineness and net gold weight
- Quote date, rate unit and whether the rate is for 24-karat gold or the item’s purity
- Making-charge basis and rupee amount
- Wastage, stone and other charges, including whether any are already included
- Discounts or credits actually recorded
- GST treatment and final amount due
- Hallmark, HUID and invoice details for hallmarked jewelry
A “zero making charges” promotion should be judged by the actual invoice values and total payable, not the promotional label alone.
How to check the hallmark and invoice
BIS describes three marks on hallmarked gold jewelry: the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. Use the BIS CARE app’s Verify HUID feature to check the HUID. For a hallmarked precious-metal article, BIS says the bill or invoice should mention the article description, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. Keep the authentic invoice for your records and any dispute or complaint.
See the BIS Common Consumer FAQ for its invoice guidance. BIS also says consumers can seek purity testing at a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. Its consumer-protection guidance says that if hallmarked jewelry is found to be of lesser purity than marked, the buyer is entitled to compensation calculated as two times the amount of the difference for the sold item’s weight, plus testing charges. Confirm the current process with BIS before relying on that remedy.
