How to Calculate SST on a Purchase or Invoice in Malaysia

Malaysia SST calculation starts with classification: sales tax on taxable goods and service tax on taxable services follow different rules. Learn the rate checks, formulas, invoice details and date-related cautions.

To calculate SST in Malaysia, first identify whether the charge is for taxable goods subject to sales tax or a taxable service subject to service tax. The taxes apply at different stages and use different rules. For an eligible service, multiply its taxable value by the applicable rate and show the tax separately. For goods, do not assume the retail price is a new sales-tax base: the applicable goods classification, valuation rule and sales-tax order determine the treatment.

Start by identifying which SST applies

Malaysia’s sales tax and service tax are not interchangeable. A line labelled “SST” on an invoice does not, by itself, establish which tax applies, whether the item is taxable or what rate should be used. Classify the transaction before doing the arithmetic.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Tax What it applies to Where the tax event generally occurs
Sales tax Taxable goods, with rates and exemptions determined by the applicable orders Generally when taxable goods are manufactured in Malaysia by a registered manufacturer and sold, used or disposed of by that manufacturer, or when goods are imported into Malaysia. See the Royal Malaysian Customs Department’s sales-tax transition guide.
Service tax Taxable services provided by a taxable person in the course or furtherance of business in Malaysia When a taxable service is provided, subject to the rules for the service category and the provider’s status. See the MySST service-tax FAQ and Understanding SST.

For a consumer buying goods at retail, the manufacturer/import-stage nature of sales tax matters: do not automatically take the full checkout price and add another percentage as sales tax. If a seller separately lists a tax on an invoice, ask what tax it is, what taxable item and base it relates to, and which rule supports it. A service line is not automatically taxable either; the service must fall within a taxable category and the relevant rules must apply.

For a mixed purchase, separate the lines conceptually before comparing totals. A single invoice can include a taxable service, goods, discounts, or charges whose treatment needs to be checked independently. The invoice label is a clue to investigate, not a substitute for identifying the supplier’s role, the transaction and the applicable rules.

Check the applicable rate before calculating

The headline rates are starting points, not universal rates. MySST states a general service-tax rate of 8%, with 6% for specified service categories, and a fixed charge for credit or charge cards. For sales tax, the general rate for taxable goods is 10%, but some goods have a 5% or specific rate and some are exempt. The exact result depends on the item, transaction date and order in force.

Transaction type Rate shown in official guidance What to verify
Most taxable services 8% general rate Confirm that the service is taxable, the provider’s status, and that no category-specific treatment applies.
Food and beverage, logistics, telecommunications and parking services 6% for the listed categories Confirm the actual service classification and current rule; do not apply 6% simply because a bill relates broadly to one of these industries.
Credit or charge card RM25 per card This is a fixed amount, not a percentage to multiply by the purchase total. Check the applicable card/service rules.
Taxable goods 10% general sales-tax rate Check whether the good instead has a 5% rate, a specific rate or an exemption under the relevant order.

The service rates and fixed card amount are stated in the MySST service-tax FAQ. The goods rates and exceptions are described in RMCD’s 2025 transition guide. The 2025 sales-tax framework took effect on 1 July 2025, and the MySST SST Orders index lists the relevant 2025 orders and subsequent 2026 amendments. For goods, use the order in force on the transaction date, not a rate remembered from an older invoice.

Do not infer that every business in a named industry uses the same service-tax rate. The published 6% categories are food and beverage, logistics, telecommunications and parking services; it is the service’s classification, rather than the broad identity of the business or the customer’s description of a bill, that matters. Likewise, 10% is a general rate for taxable goods, not a blanket rate for every product.

Calculate a percentage-based service-tax amount

Once you have confirmed that a service is taxable, identified the taxable value and verified the rate, the arithmetic is simple:

  • Service tax = taxable service value × rate
  • Total including service tax = taxable service value + service tax

Use the value of the taxable service, rather than adding tax to unrelated, non-taxable charges without checking their treatment. RMCD’s invoice guidance says service tax is calculated on the actual value of taxable services rendered. The calculation does not decide whether the service is taxable or establish the right rate; those are classification questions to resolve first.

Example: taxable service at 8%

If the confirmed taxable service value is RM1,000 and the applicable rate is 8%, the tax is RM1,000 × 0.08 = RM80. The amount including service tax is RM1,080.

Example: service in a 6% category

If RM1,000 is the taxable value of a service confirmed to fall within a 6% category, the tax is RM1,000 × 0.06 = RM60, for a total of RM1,060. The example illustrates the calculation only; it does not classify a particular service.

The phrase “taxable value” is important: the formula starts after the taxable service and its value have been established. If an invoice has separate service lines, discounts or other charges, check which amounts form part of the actual value of taxable services rendered rather than multiplying the entire invoice total automatically.

Calculate sales tax on goods only after confirming the taxable base

For goods subject to an ad valorem rate, the basic arithmetic is also taxable value × rate. If RM1,000 is confirmed as the applicable sales-tax value for goods subject to 10%, the tax arithmetic is RM1,000 × 0.10 = RM100. The amount on that tax base including the tax is RM1,100.

This example is not a method for deciding that RM1,000 is the correct base for a retail purchase. Sales tax applies at specified manufacturing or import stages, and the relevant orders determine whether the goods are taxable and whether the rate is 10%, 5%, specific or exempt. Establish the product classification and prescribed valuation treatment before calculating. The SST Orders index is the official starting point for the current orders; its existence does not, on its own, identify the correct item-level entry.

Where a rate is specific rather than a percentage, do not force it into the percentage formula. Check the applicable order for the rate form and valuation rule, then follow that method. Similarly, an exempt item is not made taxable simply because a general rate appears in a summary table. Classification and the order applicable on the transaction date come first; arithmetic comes afterward.

Work backwards when a service invoice shows only a tax-inclusive total

If the amount is known to be tax-inclusive and the applicable percentage rate is already confirmed, you can separate the pre-tax value using this arithmetic:

  • Pre-tax value = tax-inclusive amount ÷ (1 + rate)
  • Tax portion = tax-inclusive amount − pre-tax value

For example, a tax-inclusive total of RM1,080 at a confirmed 8% rate gives a pre-tax value of RM1,080 ÷ 1.08 = RM1,000, leaving RM80 as tax. This reverse calculation does not prove that the transaction is taxable, that the rate is 8%, or that a quoted total contains only service tax. Confirm those facts independently before relying on the split.

The same arithmetic can be used with another confirmed percentage rate. For example, if RM1,060 is a tax-inclusive amount for a service that is confirmed to be taxed at 6%, RM1,060 ÷ 1.06 = RM1,000 before tax, so the tax portion is RM60. This is only a way to separate a known tax-inclusive total; it is not a way to decide which rate applies.

Use this workflow for a purchase or invoice

  1. Identify the charge. Is it for goods, a service, or separate goods and services? Break a mixed bill into its relevant line items rather than assigning one rate to the entire invoice without checking.
  2. Identify the tax regime and taxable event. For goods, determine whether the sales-tax rules apply at the manufacturing or import stage and whether the invoice treatment is supported. For services, check whether the service category is taxable and whether the provider is a taxable person.
  3. Check the transaction date. Find the rate, exemption and transition rules that were in force for that transaction. Do not assume the latest rate applies to a historical invoice or that the invoice date alone resolves a transaction spanning a change.
  4. Establish the taxable base. For service tax, use the actual value of taxable services rendered. For goods, follow the applicable sales-tax order and valuation rule rather than assuming the consumer’s total is the base.
  5. Apply the rate in its proper form. Multiply the confirmed base by the percentage for an ad valorem rate. Apply a fixed charge such as RM25 per credit or charge card as a fixed amount, not a percentage.
  6. Reconcile the invoice. For a service-tax invoice, compare the pre-tax service amount, stated rate, tax amount and total. If the document is in a foreign currency, check that the required Ringgit equivalent is shown.

When comparing two invoices, normalize the pre-tax base first, then compare which lines are taxable, the applicable rates, exemptions and effective dates. A difference in total may come from classification, valuation or timing rather than a multiplication error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical reconciliation is to recompute the line-level tax from the confirmed taxable base and rate, then add it to the pre-tax amount and compare the result with the invoice total. If it does not match, check for a different base, a fixed charge, a discount, an exempt or non-taxable line, or a date-related treatment before assuming that the arithmetic is wrong. For a purchase in another currency, distinguish the invoice currency from the Ringgit equivalent required on a service-tax invoice.

What a service-tax invoice should show

MySST says a registered person must issue an invoice in Bahasa Melayu or English. It should provide enough information to identify the supplier, service, taxable amount and tax calculation. The official Issuing Invoices guidance specifies these particulars:

  • Serial number and invoice date.
  • Registered person’s name, address and identification number.
  • A sufficient description of the taxable service.
  • Discounts, if any.
  • Amount excluding service tax.
  • Service-tax rate and tax amount, shown separately.
  • Total amount including service tax.

If the invoice is issued in another currency, it must also show the Ringgit equivalent, using the selling exchange rate prevailing in Malaysia when the taxable services were provided. The invoice requirements above concern service tax; do not assume they describe every sales-tax document or every retail receipt.

These particulars help a customer or accounts team check the calculation instead of seeing only a final amount. The service description supports identifying the category, the amount excluding tax provides the base shown on the invoice, and the separately stated rate and tax amount make the arithmetic visible. The total should then reconcile to the pre-tax amount plus service tax. A description that is too vague to identify the service may make the classification harder to verify.

Account for service-tax timing and invoice corrections

When service tax becomes due

MySST describes the ordinary accounting basis as payment received. If payment has not been received within 12 months of the service date, the tax becomes due on the day after that 12-month period expires. A registered person may use invoice/accrual accounting only with written approval from the Director General. These timing rules can affect the tax period even when the invoice arithmetic is straightforward; see MySST’s invoice guidance.

This is a timing rule, not a different tax rate. Keep the service date and payment date available when checking the applicable accounting period. If a payment has not arrived by the end of the 12-month period, the rule brings the tax due on the following day; an invoice date alone does not replace these stated timing requirements. Invoice/accrual accounting is not automatic: written approval from the Director General is required.

When the invoiced value changes

According to the same guidance, a credit note may be issued if the invoice value is reduced or the transaction is cancelled. A debit note may be issued when the value increases for the same transaction. The note should include required identifying and tax particulars, including a reference to the original invoice; the adjustment is made in the SST-02 return as applicable. Use the source invoice and the relevant adjustment details to keep the tax calculation traceable.

In practical terms, preserve the link between the original invoice and the adjustment rather than treating a credit or debit note as an unrelated new sale. The original reference and tax particulars make it possible to trace what value changed and to reflect the adjustment in the SST-02 return where applicable. The reason for the change matters: the guidance distinguishes a reduction or cancellation, addressed by a credit note, from an increase in value for the same transaction, addressed by a debit note.

Take extra care with transactions near a rate-change date

Sales-tax changes under the 2025 framework took effect on 1 July 2025. RMCD’s 2025 sales-tax transition FAQ addresses transactions around that date. For a transaction that spans the change, the invoice date alone may not settle the treatment; apply the specific transition rule to the transaction facts.

For historical service invoices, MySST’s service-tax FAQ also covers the 1 March 2024 change from 6% to 8%, including transition treatment for services and payments crossing that date. A current rate should not be retroactively applied to an earlier transaction without checking those rules. For either tax, the applicable date, item or service classification, taxable base, exemptions and supplier status can change the result.

MySST’s orders index includes 2025 sales-tax rate and exemption orders as well as subsequent 2026 amendments. This makes a date check essential for goods: the right answer depends on the order in force for the transaction, not simply the newest summary or the rate printed on a later invoice. Where a transaction crosses a change date, use the relevant transition guidance for its facts rather than assuming the invoice date settles the question.

Common calculation mistakes to avoid

  • Applying 8% to every service. The general service rate is not the only rate; specified categories use 6%, and the card charge is fixed rather than percentage-based.
  • Adding 10% to every goods purchase. Ten per cent is the general sales-tax rate for taxable goods, not a universal retail add-on. Some goods use a 5% or specific rate, and others are exempt.
  • Taxing the whole invoice without classifying its lines. A bill may contain taxable services, non-taxable items or goods governed by a different tax regime. Establish the treatment for each relevant charge.
  • Treating the calculation as proof of taxability. Multiplication only gives the tax amount after the taxable event, base and rate have been verified.
  • Using the current rule for an older transaction. The 2024 service-rate change and 2025 sales-tax framework have transition rules; dates can matter.
  • Using an invoice total as the tax base without checking. For service tax, use the actual value of taxable services rendered. For goods, confirm the applicable order and valuation treatment.
  • Using the reverse formula before confirming the rate. Dividing a total by 1.08 or 1.06 only separates an assumed tax-inclusive amount at that assumed rate; it does not verify the tax category or whether tax is included.
  • Confusing a fixed charge with a percentage. RM25 per credit or charge card is stated as a fixed amount, not a percentage of the purchase amount.

When the amount cannot be determined from the invoice alone

A reliable figure requires at least the item or service description, transaction date, supplier’s relevant registration status, taxable base, invoice currency and any exemption claim. For goods, the correct product classification and order entry are especially important; for services, the category and provider status matter. Where any of these facts is unclear or the amount is material or disputed, confirm the treatment with RMCD or a Malaysian tax professional rather than inferring a rate from the invoice label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In particular, a general rate table cannot establish the item-level treatment of a specific product. The MySST orders index identifies the formal orders and amendments, but the product classification is needed to locate and apply the relevant entry. For a service, the stated 8% general rate or 6% listed rate does not answer whether the particular service is taxable or whether the provider meets the relevant status requirements. Gather the invoice, description and date before seeking confirmation so the question can be assessed against the applicable rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate SST on an invoice in Malaysia?

First determine whether the charge concerns taxable goods subject to sales tax or a taxable service subject to service tax. Confirm the taxable base, the applicable rate or fixed charge, any exemption and the transaction date. For an ad valorem percentage, calculate tax as taxable value × rate, then add the tax to the taxable value. For service tax, the invoice should show the pre-tax amount, rate, tax amount separately and total including tax.

Is SST 6% or 8% in Malaysia?

MySST states 8% as the general service-tax rate and 6% for food and beverage, logistics, telecommunications and parking services. The category must be confirmed; a business’s broad industry label alone does not establish the rate. Sales tax on goods is a separate regime, with a general 10% rate and some goods at 5%, a specific rate or exempt.

How much SST should I add to a purchase?

Do not add a rate until you have established that the purchase is taxable and identified the correct tax type, base and transaction-date rule. A consumer should not automatically add sales tax to the retail price of goods because sales tax generally applies at specified manufacturing or import stages. For a confirmed taxable service, multiply its taxable value by the applicable service-tax rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I work out the tax included in a total?

If a total is known to include tax and the applicable percentage rate is already confirmed, divide the total by 1 plus the rate to find the pre-tax value. At 8%, divide by 1.08; the difference between the inclusive total and the pre-tax value is the tax portion. This arithmetic does not establish whether the transaction is taxable or which rate applies.

What should a Malaysian service-tax invoice include?

MySST says a registered person’s invoice should be in Bahasa Melayu or English and include a serial number, invoice date, registered person’s name, address and identification number, a sufficient service description, discounts, amount excluding service tax, the tax rate and amount shown separately, and the total including service tax. For an invoice in another currency, it must also show the Ringgit equivalent using the selling exchange rate prevailing in Malaysia when the taxable services were provided.

When does service tax become due if a customer has not paid?

MySST describes payment received as the ordinary accounting basis. If payment is not received within 12 months of the service date, tax becomes due on the day after that 12-month period expires. Invoice/accrual accounting requires written approval from the Director General.

The Bottom Line

To calculate SST correctly, classify the transaction first, confirm the taxable base and the rate or fixed charge that applied on its date, then do the arithmetic. MySST states an 8% general service-tax rate, 6% for specified service categories and RM25 per credit or charge card; taxable goods generally use 10% sales tax, with 5%, specific-rate and exempt treatments also possible. For services, check the invoice’s separately stated base, rate, tax and total. For a specific goods classification or a transaction near a rate change, check the applicable RMCD order and transition guidance rather than adding a blanket percentage.
