To estimate a PayPal fee, choose the rate for the seller’s country, payment type, transaction classification, and received currency, then calculate payment amount × percentage rate + fixed fee. Subtract that estimate from the payment to find the net proceeds. For US merchant accounts, PayPal’s fee schedule last updated October 1, 2026 lists different rates for Checkout, card, QR code, and other payment routes—so there is no single universal PayPal fee.
What a PayPal fee calculator needs to know
A calculator can only be as accurate as the fee schedule and transaction details it uses. Before entering an amount, identify the seller’s PayPal market, payment route, whether the payment is domestic or international under PayPal’s rules, and the currency received. Also decide whether you want to estimate only payment processing or include possible conversion and withdrawal costs.
The rates below are examples for accounts of US residents, drawn from PayPal’s US merchant fee schedule, last updated October 1, 2026. Fees can differ in other markets and change over time. Check PayPal’s current US merchant fee schedule or the appropriate local fee page before relying on a result.
How to calculate a fee, net proceeds, or target gross amount
Estimate the processing fee
For a fee made up of a percentage and a fixed charge:
#1 Best Overall
- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
- Accept contactless payments, chip cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay from anywhere, with improved connectivity, extended battery life, and enhanced security. Pay one low rate for every tap or dip.
- No long-term commitments or contracts, no monthly fees- and with offline payments, keep taking payments for up to 24 hours.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
Estimated fee = payment amount × percentage rate + fixed fee
For example, using the US standard domestic PayPal Checkout rate of 3.49% and the $0.49 fixed fee for USD received, a $100 payment produces an estimated processing fee of $3.98: ($100 × 0.0349) + $0.49. This is an illustration of that specific rate and currency, not a rate for every PayPal payment.

Estimate what remains
Estimated net = payment amount − estimated fee
With the same $100 Checkout example, the estimated net after the processing fee is $96.02. This calculation does not include any separate currency conversion or withdrawal charge.
Calculate what to charge to reach a target net
If the fee is one percentage rate plus one fixed amount, rearrange the formula:

- With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
- Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
- Process chip cards in just two seconds.
- Get your money as soon as the next business day.
- Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.
Gross charge = (target net + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage rate)
To estimate a $100 net under the same US domestic Checkout assumptions, calculate ($100 + $0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0349), or about $104.12. The formula assumes a single percentage-plus-fixed-fee structure; it does not account for conversion, withdrawal, or other possible costs. Confirm any rules that apply before adding a processing charge to a customer’s invoice.

US fee examples vary by payment route
PayPal’s US merchant schedule, last updated October 1, 2026, lists these standard domestic commercial examples. The fixed charge shown is for USD received; other received currencies may use a different fixed fee.
| Payment route | US domestic percentage | Fixed fee for USD received |
|---|---|---|
| PayPal Checkout | 3.49% | $0.49 |
| Standard credit and debit card payments | 2.99% | $0.49 |
| QR code transactions | 2.29% | QR-specific fixed fee applies; check PayPal’s schedule |
| PayPal Pay Later | 4.99% | $0.49 |
| Send/Receive Money for Goods and Services | 2.99% | Applicable fixed fee depends on received currency; check PayPal’s schedule |
These figures are not interchangeable. PayPal lists separate fee categories, and the QR code fixed-fee table is distinct from the standard commercial fixed fee. Eligibility and availability can vary. Use the route actually used for the payment rather than selecting a rate simply because it is lower. See PayPal’s US schedule for the applicable fixed-fee details and other payment types.

International payments and currency conversion are separate costs
For US commercial transactions, PayPal lists an additional 1.50% fee for receiving an international transaction, on top of the applicable domestic fee. Invoicing has its own domestic rates and also lists an additional 1.50% international fee. Apply the surcharge only when PayPal classifies the transaction as international; do not treat it as a currency conversion charge.
Currency conversion can add a separate cost when the payment or funds are converted. PayPal’s US schedule lists a 4.00% conversion spread, or another amount disclosed during the transaction, for specified goods-and-services purchases in a different currency and specified sending scenarios. For other listed conversions, it gives 3.00%, or another disclosed amount. Which amount applies depends on the conversion scenario. The fee schedule should be checked for the specific transaction; do not automatically add either percentage to every international payment.
How to use a PayPal fee calculator
- Enter the payment amount or target net. Choose the calculator mode that matches whether you want to estimate a fee, net proceeds, or the gross amount needed to reach a target.
- Choose the seller’s PayPal market and payment type. Select the actual route—such as Checkout, card, QR code, or invoice—rather than a general “PayPal” option if the calculator offers more precise choices.
- Set domestic or international status. Use PayPal’s classification rules for the sender and recipient; do not infer it solely from the currency used.
- Select the received currency. The fixed fee can depend on currency, so selecting USD when another currency is received can distort the estimate.
- Decide whether to include other costs. Check separately for currency conversion and later withdrawal charges. A processing-fee calculator may exclude them.
- Review the assumptions and compare them with PayPal’s fee page. Confirm the rate, fixed fee, market, and transaction category against the current official schedule.
- For a completed payment, check the actual transaction. In PayPal Activity, open the transaction and inspect the fee shown. PayPal’s account-fees help page provides fee and transaction lookup guidance.
What a calculator estimate may leave out
A processing estimate is not necessarily the amount that will ultimately be available to spend or withdraw. PayPal’s US merchant schedule lists no fee for a standard bank withdrawal when no currency conversion is involved and a 1.50% fee for an instant bank transfer, subject to limits. Conversion and withdrawal are separate from the fee charged to process the incoming payment, so include them only when they apply to the reader’s intended cash flow.
An estimate also cannot replace the fee displayed on a completed transaction. If the amount matters for bookkeeping or reconciliation, use the transaction record in PayPal Activity to verify the charge actually applied.

- Percentage rate: confirm the rate belongs to the payment route, not merely to PayPal generally.
- Fixed fee and currency: verify both the fixed amount and the currency received.
- Domestic or international status: check whether the international surcharge applies to the transaction.
- Conversion: identify whether money is being converted and which conversion schedule applies.
- Withdrawal: see whether a result covers processing alone or also a later bank transfer.
For example, the US schedule cited above has a lower domestic percentage for QR transactions than for PayPal Checkout, but the QR route also has its own fixed-fee table. A headline percentage alone is therefore not enough to determine which route yields the lower cost for a particular payment.
