KPH, or keystrokes per hour, is the number of keystrokes a test counts divided by the time taken in hours. For a short test, use KPH = keystrokes × 60 ÷ minutes. For example, 2,000 counted keystrokes in 15 minutes equals 8,000 KPH. The result is meaningful only when you know what the test counts and whether it measures active typing time or the full work period.
Use the direct formula for a timed test
For a test that reports a keystroke total, calculate:
KPH = total counted keystrokes ÷ elapsed hours
If the test is shorter than an hour, the minute-based version is usually easier:
KPH = total counted keystrokes × 60 ÷ elapsed minutes

Convert the duration to hours before dividing, or use the minute-based formula directly. For example, 7,500 keystrokes in 30 minutes is 7,500 × 60 ÷ 30, or 15,000 KPH. A 15-minute test is 0.25 hours; 2,000 ÷ 0.25 gives 8,000 KPH.
For a test lasting exactly one minute, multiply the keystrokes by 60. For a 30-second test, multiply by 120. These conversions produce an hourly rate; they do not mean you would necessarily sustain that pace for an entire hour.
Calculate KPH step by step
- Get the counted keystroke total. Use the test result or the employer’s data-entry system, if it provides one.
- Check the counting rule. Find out whether the total means displayed characters, physical keypresses, correct entries, or another measure.
- Record the time basis. Note the exact duration and whether it is active typing time or total elapsed time.
- Calculate gross KPH. Multiply the keystroke total by 60 and divide by the number of minutes.
- Apply an error adjustment only if the test defines one. Report the accuracy and the scoring rule alongside any net result.
Example: A test records 3,600 keystrokes in 18 minutes and 45 errors. Gross KPH is 3,600 × 60 ÷ 18 = 12,000. If the test defines net keystrokes as total keystrokes minus errors, net KPH is (3,600 − 45) × 60 ÷ 18 = 11,850. Under the common accuracy calculation of correct entries divided by total entries, accuracy is (3,600 − 45) ÷ 3,600 × 100 = 98.75%.
Gross KPH and net KPH are not the same
Gross KPH is the rate before an error adjustment: total counted keystrokes divided by hours. A simple net model subtracts errors first:

Net KPH = (counted keystrokes − errors) ÷ hours
That formula is only one possible scoring method. A test may count correct characters, deduct a whole word for an error, show speed and accuracy separately, or treat corrections differently. Typing.com, for example, describes an accuracy calculation based on correct entries divided by total entries, and says it removed a former net-WPM metric rather than encourage users to prioritize speed over accuracy (Typing.com’s scoring guidance; its explanation of WPM).
Do not label a result “net KPH” unless the test or employer specifies how errors affect it. When reporting your own result, give gross KPH, accuracy, and the error rule separately if available.
Convert between WPM, KPH, and KPM
Many conventional typing tests define one word as five characters or keystrokes, generally including spaces and punctuation. With that convention, 1 WPM corresponds to an estimated 300 KPH: five keystrokes per word × 60 minutes per hour. Typing.com describes this five-keystroke convention and includes spaces, numbers, letters, and punctuation in its definition (Typing.com’s WPM and accuracy guidance).
KPH = WPM × 300(estimate using the five-character convention)WPM = KPH ÷ 300(approximate conversion)KPH = KPM × 60KPM = KPH ÷ 60KPS = KPH ÷ 3,600
For instance, 40 WPM converts to approximately 12,000 KPH, and 175 KPM converts to 10,500 KPH. The WPM conversion is an estimate, not a substitute for a direct keystroke count: tests can define or report speed differently, and a visible character is not always one physical keypress.

These are arithmetic conversions, not job qualifications or population averages. A five-character convention is most useful for conventional typing tests; it should not be applied automatically to numeric-entry tests or other input methods.
What counts as a keystroke?
There is no universal KPH counting rule. A typing test may count characters in the final text, while a data-entry exam may count physical key depressions or use a scoring rule of its own. Spaces, punctuation, numbers, symbols, corrections, and incorrect entries may be included, excluded, or handled separately.
The distinction matters because a displayed character and a physical keypress are not always equivalent. Capital letters and some symbols can require a modifier key; input methods may use several key events to produce one character. Backspace may count as a physical press on one system but not be part of the final-text character count on another. Typing.com’s five-character WPM convention includes spaces, numbers, letters, and punctuation, but that does not establish how another employer or platform counts them.

KPH and KDPH (key depressions per hour) may be used similarly in some employment or examination contexts, but do not assume the scoring definitions match. Use the employer’s or testing provider’s stated definition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What counts as a good KPH?
There is no single KPH score that is “good” for every job or test. A useful target depends on the task, required accuracy, test duration, content, keyboard and language, and the employer’s stated minimum. A prose typing score is not directly comparable to numeric keypad entry, transcription, or form completion.
Typing.com gives college and adult typing guidance around 40–50 WPM, equivalent to approximately 12,000–15,000 KPH under the five-character convention. Those are educational reference points, not universal employment requirements (Typing.com’s speed and accuracy guidance). For an application, use the exact job listing or assessment instructions rather than assuming a general benchmark will qualify you.
Compare two scores only after checking that they use the same counting unit, time basis, error treatment, task type, and test duration. A high gross score with poor accuracy may represent less usable work than a slower score with fewer errors.

Active typing speed is not full-shift output
A typing test often measures active keyboarding, while a workday also includes reading, checking, navigating software, decisions, and interruptions. Typing.com says its platform excludes time spent watching videos, reading introductions, or reviewing results from its active typing measurement (Typing.com’s explanation of test timing). That makes an active-test rate different from an average across a whole work period.
For example, 2,500 correct keystrokes in 20 minutes of active work is 7,500 active KPH. If that pace is sustained for four active typing hours during an eight-hour shift, the total is 30,000 keystrokes. Averaged over the full shift, that is 3,750 work-period KPH. This projection assumes the stated active hours and rate; it is not a prediction of what every worker or task will produce.
Use active KPH to describe typing speed. Use work-period output divided by the full elapsed work time when estimating production across a shift.
Choose a test that matches the question
A short test can be useful for a quick estimate, but it may capture a burst rather than a stable pace. Typing.com recommends its three- and five-minute tests as more representative than very short tests, while noting that content difficulty, test length, and familiarity affect results (Typing.com’s WPM guidance). Its test page offers one-, three-, and five-minute options (Typing.com typing tests).
If you are preparing for a job assessment, practice with the task type and timing the employer uses. A free general typing test can help estimate prose speed, but it cannot replace an employer-required or proctored assessment. For a simple calculation, use the formula above or a free calculator such as Precise Calculators’ KPH calculator or Omni Calculator’s KPH calculator.
Common KPH calculation mistakes
- Dividing by minutes without converting units: use keystrokes × 60 ÷ minutes, or divide by decimal hours.
- Treating WPM as literal dictionary words: conventional WPM usually uses a five-character word, not an actual count of words in arbitrary text.
- Assuming every test counts spaces, backspaces, or modifiers the same way: confirm the test’s rule.
- Comparing gross and net scores: check whether errors have been deducted and how.
- Comparing unrelated tasks: prose typing, numeric entry, transcription, and form entry measure different work.
- Projecting a short test across a workday: include non-typing time when estimating full-shift production.
When another metric is more useful
KPH measures keyboard throughput under a particular set of counting and timing rules. It does not by itself show quality or total productivity. Depending on the work, a more informative measure may be correct characters per minute, accuracy percentage, records or forms completed per hour, fields entered per hour, or error rate per 1,000 entries. For tasks involving speech-to-text correction, programming, numeric keypads, non-Latin input methods, or accessibility tools, follow the task’s own scoring definition instead of converting through the English five-character WPM convention.
