Forward EV/EBIT = enterprise value (EV) ÷ forecast EBIT for a stated future period. EBIT means earnings before interest and taxes, also called operating profit or operating earnings. The key is to identify the forecast period and estimate source: “forward” could mean next-twelve-month (NTM) EBIT or the next fiscal year, for example.
Forward EV/EBIT formula
Forward EV/EBIT = enterprise value at the valuation date ÷ forecast EBIT for the selected forward period. The result is expressed as a multiple, such as 12x. OpenStax’s Principles of Finance 2e, section 11.1, notes that EBIT is also referred to as “operating earnings, operating profit, and profit before interest and tax.” OpenStax

For example, the calculation should be presented in this form: “At [valuation date], EV was [EV amount]. Forecast EBIT for [named period] was [EBIT amount], according to [estimate source]. Forward EV/EBIT = [EV amount] ÷ [forecast EBIT amount] = [multiple]x.” Use actual figures from company information or a clearly identified estimate source; the formula alone does not supply them.
Choose the forecast period
State exactly what “forward” means. Grant Thornton Austria describes a one-year forward EV multiple using analyst EBIT estimates for the next twelve months (NTM). It distinguishes this from a trailing multiple, which uses EBIT from the company’s most recently published financial information. Grant Thornton Austria

A next-fiscal-year forecast and an NTM forecast can cover different periods. Do not compare their multiples as though the denominators were interchangeable: forecasts change over time, and period differences can materially affect the ratio. Name the horizon and use EBIT estimates that match it.
Establish enterprise value consistently
EV represents enterprise-level value, while equity value alone represents the value attributable to shareholders. A valuation report describes a simplified relationship of total investment value as equity value plus debt value, and expresses EV/EBIT as (equity value + debt value) ÷ EBIT. RICS valuation report

That simplified expression is not a universal, complete EV calculation. State how EV was built and disclose material adjustments used in your analysis. Sources and providers may use different conventions; apply one definition consistently to every company in a comparison.
Keep company comparisons like-for-like
Enterprise-value multiples relate the total market value of a company’s capital to a fundamental measure for the enterprise. CFA Institute explains that EV multiples compare enterprise-level value with company-level fundamentals; using EBIT before financing costs and taxes can help compare companies without focusing on how each finances operations. What the multiple does—and does not—tell you
EV/EBIT is a comparison aid, not a stand-alone verdict that a security is cheap or expensive. It places enterprise-level value against operating profit, but it does not account for every difference in business risk, growth prospects, accounting, capital intensity, or forecast quality. A lower multiple is not automatically better, and a higher one is not automatically worse.

Any benchmark needs a relevant peer group, consistent inputs, and a date; without those, a single multiple cannot establish fair value.
