To estimate the monthly EMI on a fixed-rate, fully amortising SME loan, use the principal financed, the monthly interest rate and the number of monthly payments. Then estimate scheduled interest by subtracting the principal from all scheduled payments. This gives a useful calculation—not a lender quote or the full cost of borrowing.
How to calculate EMI and total interest on an SME business loan
For equal monthly instalments on a fixed-rate, reducing-balance loan, use:
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1)
- P is the principal actually financed.
- r is the monthly interest rate as a decimal. For an annual rate quoted as a percentage, calculate r = annual rate (%) ÷ 12 ÷ 100.
- n is the number of monthly instalments. Convert years to months by multiplying by 12.
If the monthly rate is zero, EMI is P ÷ n. To estimate total scheduled interest, calculate (EMI × n) − P. This is the interest represented by the instalments; it does not include charges paid separately.
Example using the RBI’s published figures
The Reserve Bank of India borrower FAQ gives an illustration of a 1,000,000 loan at 15.00% annual interest over 120 monthly payments, with an EMI of 16,133.50. The FAQ does not state a publication year, and this is an illustration rather than a current SME loan offer. See the RBI borrower FAQ.

Using the published EMI, total scheduled payments are 16,133.50 × 120 = 1,936,020, and the implied scheduled interest is 1,936,020 − 1,000,000 = 936,020. These totals are arithmetic derived from the FAQ’s figures. Its amortisation example shows 12,500.00 of interest in the first month; the rest of that instalment reduces principal.
How do I calculate business loan EMI?
- Find the amount financed. Use the loan principal that will actually be repaid. If charges are added to the balance, the financed principal may differ from the cash received.
- Convert the annual rate to a monthly decimal. For example, divide the annual percentage rate by 12 and then by 100 to get the monthly rate used in the formula.
- Convert the term to monthly payments. A term stated in years becomes years × 12 instalments.
- Apply the formula. The result estimates an equal monthly payment under the formula’s assumptions. For a zero rate, divide principal by the payment count.
- Estimate scheduled interest. Multiply the EMI by the number of payments and subtract principal.
The calculation assumes equal monthly payments, a fixed rate throughout the term and full repayment through those instalments. A lender’s day-count convention, payment dates, disbursement timing, rounding, financed fees or floating-rate reset can change the actual schedule. An online calculator result is therefore an estimate, not a lender quote.

How does reducing-balance interest work?
Each instalment pays the interest due on the outstanding principal and reduces that principal by the remainder. In the next period, interest is calculated on the lower balance, so the interest portion generally falls as repayment progresses. The Reserve Bank of India explains the reducing-balance method in its borrower FAQ; ICICI Bank also describes reducing-balance interest for its business instalment loan on its interest information page.
How much total interest will I pay on my business loan?
For a loan that follows the formula assumptions, multiply the monthly EMI by the number of instalments and subtract the principal. The result is scheduled interest, not necessarily the total cost of borrowing: separately paid processing charges and other fees are not included in that arithmetic.

For an Indian borrower covered by applicable RBI requirements, compare the estimate with the lender’s Key Facts Statement (KFS), Annual Percentage Rate (APR) and amortisation schedule. The Ministry of MSME handbook describes APR as the annual cost of credit, including interest and other charges associated with the facility, and says the KFS includes an APR computation sheet and amortisation schedule. Applicable charges for third-party services, such as insurance or legal charges, are included in APR and disclosed separately. Consult the current KFS and loan terms for the specific offer; regulatory requirements and disclosures may depend on the borrower and product. Ministry of MSME, Know Your Lender, Grow Your Business, section 5.4; RBI Master Directions KFS material.
Does a longer loan tenure reduce EMI?
Generally, yes: keeping the principal and rate constant while extending the term spreads repayment over more instalments, reducing the monthly EMI but increasing total scheduled interest. The RBI FAQ describes this trade-off. The lower payment can help monthly cash flow, but it does not mean the borrowing costs less overall.

What can change the EMI and interest estimate?
- Principal: A larger financed balance raises both EMI and scheduled interest when rate and term are unchanged.
- Rate: A higher rate raises the EMI and scheduled interest when principal and term are unchanged.
- Tenure: A longer term generally lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest.
- Floating-rate resets: The formula is a snapshot using the rate entered. A reset can alter the remaining schedule according to the contract; there is no single outcome that applies to every loan.
- Fees and other charges: They may affect the overall cost even if they are outside the EMI calculation. Check the APR and loan-specific disclosures.
How to compare SME business loan offers
Compare offers using the same borrowing amount and repayment period, then review both the payment estimate and the lender’s terms. A calculator can use assumptions that differ from the final loan schedule.
| Compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Monthly EMI | Payment amount and number of instalments in the lender’s schedule. |
| Total scheduled interest | Total instalments minus principal, checked against the amortisation schedule. |
| APR and charges | APR, fees and other disclosed costs in the KFS or applicable offer documents. |
| Rate terms | Whether the rate is fixed or floating, and how and when any resets apply. |
| Prepayment terms | Applicable conditions and charges in the sanction terms or loan agreement. |
Use the current KFS and sanction terms to make the final comparison; an EMI alone cannot show every cost or contractual condition.
