A crypto tax calculator for tax year 2025 should do more than total up sales: it needs to reconcile your records, determine adjusted basis and amount realized for each taxable disposal, apply the relevant fee and lot-identification rules, and separate capital transactions from income. Its results are only as reliable as the data and classifications you review. This is a U.S. federal overview; state, local, and non-U.S. tax treatment is outside its scope.

How do I calculate crypto taxes for 2025?

For U.S. federal income tax purposes, digital assets are treated as property, so general property transaction rules apply. For a sale or other taxable disposal, the basic calculation is the amount realized minus the asset’s adjusted basis. A positive result is generally a gain; a negative result is generally a loss. The IRS explains the property treatment and calculation principles in its digital asset transaction FAQs.

For each transaction, gather the date, asset and quantity, acquisition details, disposal details, relevant fees, and records supporting the values. A calculator should use the U.S.-dollar value of what you received and the basis of the particular units disposed of. For sales, amount realized generally starts with cash received and the fair market value of any services received to effect the sale, then accounts for applicable disposition costs. For a taxable exchange for other property, compare the disposed asset’s adjusted basis with the amount realized for that exchange.

Separate disposals from income

Not every receipt of crypto is a capital gain. Digital assets received for services are generally ordinary income measured at their fair market value in U.S. dollars when received. Employee compensation is treated as wages; compensation for independent contractors generally constitutes self-employment income. The IRS filing guidance also identifies reporting routes for certain staking, mining, and fork income, depending on the activity and facts.

Activity What a calculator should capture Typical federal reporting route identified by the IRS
Sale, exchange, or other disposition of a digital asset held as a capital asset Disposed units, adjusted basis, amount realized, and applicable transaction costs Form 8949 for capital-asset dispositions
Digital assets received for employee services Fair market value in U.S. dollars when received Form 1040 wage reporting
Digital assets received for contractor services or in a business Fair market value when received, with the activity classified appropriately Schedule C may apply to contractor receipts or business sales
Some staking, mining, or fork income Income amount and receipt details, kept separate from later disposals Schedule 1 may apply to specified ordinary income

These are common routes, not a complete determination for every taxpayer. The IRS’s digital assets filing guidance describes relevant forms; use the form instructions or a qualified tax professional when your activity does not fit a straightforward investor situation.

Build a complete transaction record

  • Export transaction histories from every exchange and wallet used during the year, including activity involving NFTs or other digital assets.
  • Record acquisitions, disposals, income receipts, fees, and transfers, with dates, quantities, asset identifiers, and U.S.-dollar values where relevant.
  • Preserve source records such as exchange statements, wallet histories, confirmations, and records showing how you determined basis and fair market value.
  • Reconcile transfers between your own wallets or accounts so they are not mistaken for sales or new purchases, and trace the units through to their eventual disposition.

Do I owe taxes when I swap one crypto for another?

A taxable exchange of one digital asset for another is generally a disposition of the asset you give up. The calculation compares its adjusted basis with the amount realized in the exchange; receiving no dollars does not by itself mean there was no taxable event. The asset received has its own basis records for a later disposition. Apply the rule to the actual transaction and keep the exchange confirmation and valuation records.

How transaction fees affect the calculation

Fee treatment depends on what the fee paid for. IRS guidance distinguishes purchase costs, sale costs, costs of exchanging assets, and transfers between a taxpayer’s own accounts. Do not let a calculator apply one blanket “fee” rule to every transaction.

Fee situation Federal tax treatment described by the IRS
Cash paid for services that effect a purchase of digital assets Include the fee in the basis of the purchased assets.
Services that effect a sale Applicable fees may reduce amount realized.
Costs to effect an exchange of digital assets that differ materially in kind or extent Allocate the transaction costs to the disposed assets; do not automatically add them to the basis of the assets received.
Transfer between your own wallets or accounts Not treated as transaction costs of a purchase, sale, or disposition under this rule; a transfer alone is not the same as a taxable sale.

The IRS describes transaction costs as including transaction or “gas” fees, transfer taxes, and commissions paid for services effecting a purchase, sale, or disposition. Whether a particular charge qualifies depends on what service it paid for. See the IRS FAQs on digital asset transactions.

How should I track basis and identify lots?

Basis is tied to the units acquired, so a sound calculation needs lot-level records: when each unit was acquired, its basis, where it was held, and the transfers and dispositions that followed. If your history spans multiple exchanges or wallets, reconcile the trail before relying on a gain-or-loss summary.

Lot-identification rules depend on the transaction date and custody arrangement. For qualifying 2025 transactions, IRS temporary relief permits a taxpayer to document a sufficiently specific standing order in the taxpayer’s own books and records before the covered transaction. For dispositions after December 31, 2025, the IRS FAQ describes specific identification communicated to the custodial broker no later than the sale, disposition, or transfer, supported by adequate records. If applicable identification is not made, the default ordering generally uses the earliest-acquired units in the relevant account or wallet, subject to the detailed rule for the circumstances. This is not a blanket rule that every taxpayer can choose lots after a sale; consult the applicable IRS guidance for your custody and transaction facts.

Revenue Procedure 2024-28 provided a transition safe harbor for eligible taxpayers allocating unused basis to digital assets remaining in each wallet or account as of January 1, 2025. It has eligibility and recordkeeping conditions, does not apply to assets acquired or transferred to the taxpayer on or after that date, and makes allocations irrevocable for section 1012 purposes. It is a transition measure for certain pre-2025 holdings, not a general basis reset or a replacement for tracking later acquisitions and transfers.

Does my 1099-DA show my cost basis?

Usually not for 2025 transactions. The IRS said most Forms 1099-DA for 2025 would not include basis. Brokers must report gross proceeds for applicable transactions effected on or after January 1, 2025; basis reporting applies to certain transactions effected on or after January 1, 2026. The IRS’s January 28, 2026 reminder said brokers had to provide 2025 Forms 1099-DA by February 17, 2026. See the IRS Tax Tip 2026-07 and its digital assets guidance.

Treat a 1099-DA as one record to reconcile, not as a complete tax calculation. Compare its reported proceeds with your exchange exports and wallet records, then establish basis from your own transaction history. You still must report taxable income, gains, or losses even if you do not receive a 1099-DA. A missing form does not make a taxable transaction disappear.

What is the best crypto tax calculator?

There is no substantiated universal “best” choice here: the right tool depends on whether it supports your actual exchanges, wallets, asset types, and reporting needs. No independent comparison establishes that one product handles every 2025 rule correctly. Evaluate software by what you can verify and inspect rather than assuming an automated result is accurate.

  • Data coverage: Check whether it can import every exchange and wallet you used and handle the types of activity in your records. TurboTax states on its product page that it supports imports from digital asset exchanges and wallets, including NFTs; that is the vendor’s description, not an independent compatibility audit.
  • Reconciliation controls: Look for ways to review imported transactions, identify missing basis, correct duplicates and misclassified transfers, and retain an audit trail. These matter because the taxpayer’s records support basis and lot identification.
  • Rule handling: Ask how the software treats purchase fees, sale fees, crypto-to-crypto exchange costs, own-wallet transfers, and lot identification for the dates and custody arrangements that apply to you.
  • Useful outputs: Confirm that the service provides reports or data that can support Form 8949 and any other forms relevant to your activity. A gain-and-loss total alone may not address income reported elsewhere.
  • Help for complex records: Multiple wallets, missing transaction history, staking or mining, contractor income, and basis discrepancies may require more than automatic import. Consider professional review if you cannot substantiate a value, classify an item, or reconcile a lot.

TurboTax’s current product description also says TurboTax Investor Center was discontinued effective July 22, 2025, while crypto tax filing support continues through TurboTax. Treat this as the vendor’s stated product status, not an endorsement or proof that the service is right for your records.

A practical filing workflow for 2025 activity

  1. Gather records: Export the full-year transaction histories from exchanges and wallets, collect any 1099-DA and other tax statements, and preserve records for transfers and fees.
  2. Import and reconcile: Match imports to source records; resolve duplicates, omitted transactions, and transfers between accounts you own before accepting calculated totals.
  3. Classify each receipt and disposition: Separate capital-asset sales and exchanges from wages, contractor income, and other ordinary-income activity.
  4. Review basis and lot identification: Confirm each disposed lot is supported by acquisition, basis, account or wallet, and transfer records, applying the identification rules relevant to the transaction.
  5. Check fees and values: Verify that fees are classified by the service they paid for and that the calculation uses supportable U.S.-dollar values and amount realized.
  6. Transfer amounts to the appropriate tax forms: Use Form 8949 for capital-asset dispositions and the applicable route for income or business activity, following the IRS form instructions for your circumstances.
