To calculate crypto returns after fees and taxes, keep two figures separate: your economic return, which tracks the money and costs that affected your investment, and your taxable gain or loss, which follows the tax rules that apply to you. For a simple U.S. federal-tax example involving one purchase and one sale, after-tax profit is sale proceeds minus acquisition outlay, investment fees, and tax attributable to the sale. Your taxable gain is calculated separately as amount realized minus adjusted basis.

Calculate your investment return and taxable gain separately

Economic performance answers, “How much did I make or lose after the money I put in, the fees I paid, and the tax on the sale?” Taxable gain answers a different question: “What gain or loss must I report under the applicable tax rules?” These amounts can differ because tax rules determine which costs adjust basis or sale proceeds, while an economic ledger should capture every cost that reduced your wealth.

Economic return for one purchase and one sale

For a single purchase followed by a single sale, with no interim deposits or withdrawals, use:

After-tax profit = sale proceeds − acquisition outlay − all investment fees − tax attributable to the taxable disposition

After-tax return (%) = after-tax profit ÷ total invested outlay × 100

Use the same currency throughout. Include the amount you actually spent to acquire the position in the invested outlay, and count each fee once. If a fee is already included in the amount charged by an exchange, do not subtract it again as a separate line item. The formula is a simplified performance measure, not a substitute for the tax calculation.

Taxable gain or loss under U.S. federal guidance

For a U.S. federal capital-asset sale, the IRS defines gain or loss by comparing adjusted basis with amount realized. In signed form:

For a cash sale, amount realized generally starts with the cash received, plus the fair market value of any services received, and is reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to the disposition. Basis generally starts with the asset’s U.S.-dollar acquisition cost; qualifying acquisition fees may also be included. See the IRS guidance on digital-asset sales and amount realized and basis for virtual currency.

Account for fees according to what they paid for

For your economic return, record every fee that reduced your wealth. For tax purposes, do not assume all fees receive the same treatment. The IRS describes digital-asset transaction costs as payments in cash or property for services by another party that effect a purchase, sale, or disposition. Its examples include transaction and gas fees, transfer taxes, and commissions. The purpose of the fee and the transaction it relates to matter.

Fees connected with buying or selling

Disposition transaction costs allocable to the assets sold reduce amount realized. Certain qualifying costs to acquire digital assets may increase basis. Preserve the fee amount, date, asset involved, and service received so you can determine its treatment rather than simply labeling every charge “trading fees.” The IRS explains these categories in its digital-asset transaction-cost guidance.

Transfers between your own wallets

The IRS distinguishes a fee that effects a purchase, sale, or disposition from a fee paid to transfer assets between your own wallets or accounts. A transfer fee paid in digital assets can itself be a disposition of those assets and may create a gain or loss, even if the payment may qualify as a transaction cost. Keep a record of the fee asset and its value at the time of payment; see the IRS digital-asset transaction FAQs.

Use the right method when you have multiple transactions

The single-purchase formula is not a reliable summary when you make deposits, withdrawals, or purchases at different times. Those cash flows affect a return differently depending on when they occurred. State which return convention you are using and retain transaction dates and amounts. A simple profit divided by total contributions can describe an overall result, but it does not by itself account for timing in the way a time-weighted or money-weighted return does.

Taxable gain also requires the basis for the particular units disposed of. If you bought the same asset at different prices or across multiple accounts, retain records that support the basis and unit identification used. Do not assume a portfolio app’s headline percentage is either your tax gain or a complete after-tax performance measure.

Estimate tax without assuming a universal rate

There is no single tax percentage to subtract from every crypto gain. Tax depends on jurisdiction and personal circumstances; the cited material establishes U.S. federal mechanics, not state or local outcomes, other countries’ rules, or an individual tax bill.

Under the cited IRS federal guidance, a capital gain is short-term if the digital asset was held for one year or less and long-term if held for more than one year. The holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the day of sale or exchange. This classification can affect the tax calculation, but it does not by itself establish the rate you owe. Check the applicable rules and current-year instructions for your circumstances; the IRS explains the holding-period treatment.

Keep records that support both calculations

Save records as transactions occur. The IRS says digital-asset records should document purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, other dispositions or transfers, and fair market value in U.S. dollars where relevant. Its overview identifies the asset type, transaction date and time, units, fair market value at the transaction time, and basis as facts used to calculate gain or loss. Preserve exchange statements and wallet records that substantiate your basis and unit identification. See the IRS digital-assets filing guidance.

  • Acquisition date, units, U.S.-dollar cost, and any related fee.
  • Sale or exchange date, units disposed of, proceeds or value received, and disposition costs.
  • Transfers between wallets or accounts, including any fee paid in digital assets.
  • Time-specific fair market values and records showing how you identified the units sold.
  • Exchange statements, wallet transaction records, and any other evidence supporting your entries.

Report U.S. federal transactions using current-year guidance

For individuals’ U.S. federal returns, sales and other capital transactions involving digital assets generally are calculated and reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D, subject to reporting exceptions. Taxable transactions must be reported for the year they occur even if you do not receive an information return. Because forms, instructions, and broker statements can change, use the current tax-year materials and the IRS digital-asset FAQs rather than relying on an older form or software prompt.

A crypto tax calculator or tax-preparation service may help organize transactions and prepare forms, but check that it handles your transaction types, fees, basis records, and tax year. Its output is only as reliable as the records and assumptions entered, and it is not a replacement for jurisdiction-specific tax advice.
