You can buy U.S. Treasury notes at auction through TreasuryDirect or through a bank, broker, or dealer. TreasuryDirect accepts only noncompetitive bids: you accept the yield set at auction. An intermediary can submit either a noncompetitive bid or a competitive bid, and it also provides access to the secondary market. If you buy a note in TreasuryDirect and later want to sell it before maturity, you must transfer it to an intermediary first; new TreasuryDirect purchases generally cannot be transferred or sold for 45 calendar days.

The choice is mainly about how you want to place the order and whether you may need to sell before maturity. Before buying, compare the available note terms, understand the auction bid types, check the current offering, and confirm any intermediary-specific deadlines or fees.

What a Treasury note is

Treasury notes are marketable U.S. government securities issued with terms of 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years. Each pays fixed interest every six months. The rate is set at auction and does not change over the life of that note. You can hold a note until maturity or sell it earlier through an intermediary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listed term describes the period until maturity for that note. The available choices run from 2 years through 10 years, but a note’s specific offering and auction date matter: use the current Treasury auction schedule rather than assuming a particular term is currently available on a particular date. A note’s rate is fixed after the auction, but the yield you will receive is not known in advance of the auction. Do not treat a previously published yield or an old auction result as a guaranteed rate for a new order.

Notes are electronic book-entry securities, not paper certificates. Each auction offering is identified by a CUSIP. Check the current Treasury auction schedule and the details for the specific offering before placing an order: the yield is determined at auction, so a yield should not be treated as fixed or guaranteed in advance. Matching the offering and CUSIP in your order with the security you intend to buy helps distinguish one auction offering from another.

The minimum purchase is $100, in increments of $100. TreasuryDirect lists a $10 million maximum for a noncompetitive bid; that cap applies to that bid type, not to competitive bids generally. TreasuryDirect says interest on notes is subject to federal tax each year and exempt from state and local taxes. Your own tax treatment may depend on your circumstances.

The minimum and increment apply to the amount you enter for the purchase. If using TreasuryDirect, make sure your selected funding source can meet the payment instructions and that funds are available by the issue date. The final purchase price is determined at auction. For a reopening, the final price may include accrued interest, so the amount due may not be simply the amount implied by looking at the note’s stated interest rate.

Choose where to buy

Decision TreasuryDirect Bank, broker, or dealer
Auction bid types Noncompetitive only; you accept the auction-set yield. Competitive or noncompetitive; you may use only one type for the same auction.
Auction outcome Treasury guidance says a noncompetitive bidder receives the full amount requested. A competitive bid may be filled in full, partly filled, or not filled, depending on the auction result.
Buying after the auction Does not provide a route to buy a note in the secondary market. Can provide access to secondary-market purchases and sales; confirm the institution’s process.
Selling before maturity Transfer the note to an intermediary before selling. New purchases generally have a 45-calendar-day holding period before transfer or sale. Contact the institution holding the security to ask about selling it.
Account workflow and costs Requires a TreasuryDirect account and its payment instructions. Fees, deadlines, order procedures, and account requirements vary by institution; verify them directly.

The practical distinction is flexibility. TreasuryDirect is an option if you want to accept the auction result and expect to hold the note, while an intermediary is necessary for competitive bidding or for selling a TreasuryDirect-held note before maturity. A brokerage is not the only type of intermediary: Treasury guidance also names banks and dealers.

Choose TreasuryDirect if its noncompetitive-only auction process fits your plan and you are comfortable with the general 45-calendar-day restriction on transferring or selling a new purchase. Choose a bank, broker, or dealer if you want the option of making a competitive auction bid, buying in the secondary market, or selling a security held there. These are functional differences, not a promise that one route is cheaper or better in every situation.

The intermediary column covers a category, not a single standard service. An institution may set its own order cutoff, payment workflow, account requirements, and fees. Treasury’s guidance does not compare providers or establish common terms for them. Ask the institution you intend to use what it offers and what it charges before relying on its service for an auction order or a later sale.

How to buy Treasury notes through TreasuryDirect

TreasuryDirect states, “To buy Treasury marketable securities, you must bid when we auction the type of security you want.” Use the current auction schedule to find a note offering and confirm its terms before you submit an order. A TreasuryDirect purchase is an auction purchase: it is not an order to buy a previously issued note in the secondary market.

  1. Open or sign in to your TreasuryDirect account. You need an account to place the order through TreasuryDirect. Allow time to use the account workflow and follow its current instructions; an account alone does not place an order or reserve a particular auction yield.
  2. Go to BuyDirect. Choose the marketable-security type and the planned auction for the note you want. Confirm the specific offering, including its CUSIP. Check the term and offering details against the current schedule rather than selecting on the basis of a yield from a different offering.
  3. Select a registration. Choose the registration for the purchase in the account workflow. Review the registration shown before you continue so that the purchase is associated with the intended account registration.
  4. Enter the purchase amount. The minimum is $100, and orders must be in $100 increments. TreasuryDirect’s stated $10 million limit is for noncompetitive bids. It is not a general cap on every kind of Treasury bid.
  5. Choose the source of funds. Follow the payment instructions shown in TreasuryDirect and ensure the funds will be available by the issue date. Do not assume that submitting an order means the payment timing can be ignored; the account must be funded as instructed.
  6. Submit a noncompetitive bid. TreasuryDirect does not offer competitive bidding. You accept the yield determined at auction; Treasury guidance says the full requested amount is received. You are not specifying a minimum acceptable yield through this route.
  7. Check the final purchase details. The final price is determined at auction. If the note is a reopening, the price may include accrued interest. Review the result and the payment details instead of treating a pre-auction yield as a final price quote.

Placing an order is not the same as locking in a yield beforehand. Review the auction result and the final price, especially for a reopening, and keep enough funds available by the issue date. The fixed rate applies to the note once set at auction; it does not mean the pre-auction yield displayed for a different or earlier offering will be the yield on your purchase.

Also consider what you may need to do after the purchase. A new TreasuryDirect-held marketable security generally must stay in the account for 45 calendar days before transfer or sale. If you want to sell before maturity, you will need to transfer the note to a bank, broker, or dealer and then arrange the sale through that intermediary. If that restriction does not fit your likely cash needs, decide on an intermediary route before submitting the auction order.

How to buy Treasury notes through a brokerage, bank, or dealer

An individual can submit a noncompetitive or competitive bid through a bank, broker, or dealer. The two bid types work differently:

  • Noncompetitive bid: You accept the yield set at auction. Treasury’s guidance says the full amount requested is awarded.
  • Competitive bid: You specify the yield you are willing to accept. The bid may be filled in full, partly, or not at all based on the auction result.

You cannot submit both types of bid for the same auction. If you want to place an order through an intermediary:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the account and order process. Ask the institution whether it offers Treasury note auction orders and whether your account meets its requirements. The fact that an institution is a bank, broker, or dealer does not tell you its particular workflow or eligibility rules.
  2. Check deadlines and costs. The institution sets its own order cutoff and payment mechanics. Ask about fees and how it handles an order that is partially filled or not filled. The institution’s cutoff may be important even when the auction schedule gives the auction’s timing; confirm the provider’s deadline directly.
  3. Choose one bid type for that auction. Decide whether to accept the auction yield with a noncompetitive bid or specify an acceptable yield with a competitive bid. A competitive bid gives you a way to state a yield threshold, but it does not guarantee an award at that yield or any award at all.
  4. Submit the order through the institution’s current workflow. Follow its instructions for the offering, amount, funding, and any bid details it requires. Verify the offering and CUSIP so the order corresponds to the note you intend to buy.
  5. Check the outcome and position. Confirm the amount awarded and the note’s details in your account after the auction. For a competitive bid, verify whether the bid was fully filled, partly filled, or not filled; do not assume the requested amount was awarded.

Treasury does not set or compare intermediary-specific fees, cutoff times, or order workflows in its guidance. Do not assume that one institution’s terms apply to another; verify the current details with the provider you plan to use. If your main reason for choosing an intermediary is flexibility, check that it supports the exact service you need—auction bidding, secondary-market transactions, or both.

An intermediary can also provide access to notes that are already trading in the secondary market. That is different from placing a bid for a new offering at auction. If buying after the auction is your goal, confirm that the institution provides secondary-market purchases and ask it about its process and costs. Do not apply auction bid rules or a quoted auction yield automatically to a secondary-market order.

Can you sell a Treasury note before it matures?

Yes, but the route depends on where the note is held. If it is already at a bank, broker, or dealer, contact that institution about selling it. A sale before maturity takes place through the intermediary holding the security, rather than through TreasuryDirect.

If the note is held in TreasuryDirect, transfer it to a bank, broker, or dealer before selling. A new TreasuryDirect-held marketable security generally must remain in the account for 45 calendar days before it can be transferred or sold. TreasuryDirect identifies an exception for a purchase made with proceeds from reinvestment of a maturing security. If you may need access to the money sooner, account for the holding period when choosing how to buy.

The 45-calendar-day rule is a limitation on transferring or selling a new TreasuryDirect-held purchase; it is not a general promise that every note can be sold immediately after that period. The sale still needs to be arranged through an intermediary. If an early sale is a possibility, ask the institution that would hold the note how to place a sale order and what its current process and fees are.

When deciding whether to hold a note to maturity or sell earlier, separate the holding decision from the purchase route. TreasuryDirect lets you place a noncompetitive auction bid, but it does not itself give you a secondary-market sale route. An intermediary is needed to sell a TreasuryDirect-held note before maturity and also provides the path to secondary-market purchases. Consider this operational constraint before buying, rather than waiting until you need to sell.

Questions to settle before placing an order

  • Which term and offering do you want? Notes are offered in 2-, 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-year terms. Check the current schedule and offering details rather than relying on an old yield or auction date. Confirm the CUSIP for the offering you selected.
  • Do you want to accept the auction yield or specify one? TreasuryDirect supports only noncompetitive bids. Competitive bidding requires an intermediary and does not guarantee a full award. You may submit only one of these bid types for the same auction.
  • Could you need to sell before maturity? A TreasuryDirect purchase is subject to the general 45-calendar-day holding period and requires transfer to an intermediary before sale. A note held at an intermediary can be sold by contacting that institution.
  • Are your funds and account ready? TreasuryDirect requires its stated source-of-funds workflow and funds available by the issue date. An intermediary may have a different payment process or earlier order cutoff.
  • Have you checked the actual cost and terms? Confirm fees, deadlines, and service mechanics directly with any intermediary; they vary by provider. Treasury does not provide a comparison of provider costs in its guidance.
  • Are you buying at auction or in the secondary market? TreasuryDirect’s BuyDirect process is for bidding when the desired type of security is auctioned. An intermediary may also provide secondary-market access. Confirm which transaction you are placing and the details that apply to it.
  • Have you considered tax treatment in your circumstances? TreasuryDirect says note interest is subject to federal tax each year and is exempt from state and local taxes. For questions about how that applies to you, confirm your own tax situation rather than treating the general description as individualized tax advice.

What the choice comes down to

For a straightforward auction purchase where you are willing to accept the auction-set yield and do not expect to sell during the first 45 calendar days, TreasuryDirect offers a direct noncompetitive-bid route. It requires an account, use of the BuyDirect workflow, and funds available by the issue date.

A bank, broker, or dealer is the more flexible route if you want to place a competitive bid, buy a note in the secondary market, or have a route to sell before maturity. The trade-off is that provider requirements, fees, payment mechanics, and order cutoffs are institution-specific. Verify those details before choosing a provider or submitting an order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In either case, identify the current note offering and CUSIP, distinguish the auction result from an earlier quoted yield, and make sure the purchase route fits the way you may need to manage the security later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I buy Treasury notes through TreasuryDirect?

Open or sign in to a TreasuryDirect account, go to BuyDirect, select the note type and planned auction, choose a registration, enter an amount of at least $100 in $100 increments, and select the source of funds shown in the workflow. TreasuryDirect accepts noncompetitive bids only, so you accept the auction-determined yield. Have funds available by the issue date and review the final price; a reopening may include accrued interest.

Can I buy Treasury notes through my brokerage?

Yes. A bank, broker, or dealer can submit an auction bid, and an intermediary may also provide access to secondary-market purchases. Check with your institution for its current account requirements, order cutoff, payment process, fees, and available services.

What is the difference between TreasuryDirect and a brokerage?

TreasuryDirect offers noncompetitive auction bids only and generally requires a new purchase to remain in the account for 45 calendar days before transfer or sale. An intermediary can handle a noncompetitive or competitive bid, though you cannot use both types for the same auction, and it can provide secondary-market access. Provider costs and processes vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I sell a Treasury note before it matures?

Yes. If the note is held at a bank, broker, or dealer, contact that institution about selling it. If it is held in TreasuryDirect, you must transfer it to an intermediary before selling. New TreasuryDirect-held purchases generally cannot be transferred or sold for 45 calendar days, with an exception for a purchase funded by reinvestment proceeds from a maturing security.

What is the minimum amount to buy, and is there a maximum?

The minimum purchase is $100, and purchases are in $100 increments. TreasuryDirect lists a $10 million maximum for noncompetitive bids. That figure is specific to TreasuryDirect noncompetitive bidding and should not be treated as a general cap on competitive bids.

What happens if I submit a competitive bid?

You specify the yield you are willing to accept through an intermediary. Depending on the auction result, your bid may be filled in full, partly filled, or not filled. You cannot submit both a competitive and a noncompetitive bid for the same auction.

Are Treasury note interest payments taxable?

TreasuryDirect says interest on notes is subject to federal tax each year and is exempt from state and local taxes. Individual tax circumstances can vary, so use this as general information rather than individualized tax advice.

The Bottom Line

Use TreasuryDirect if you want to make a noncompetitive auction bid, accept the yield set at auction, and are comfortable with its account workflow and general 45-calendar-day restriction on transferring or selling new purchases. Use a bank, broker, or dealer if you want competitive bidding, secondary-market access, or a route to sell before maturity. Confirm the current offering and CUSIP, and verify the intermediary’s fees, deadlines, and process directly.
