To buy Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) shares, open an account with a PSX-recognised broker licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), arrange custody through the Central Depository Company (CDC), obtain a National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) Unique Identification Number (UIN), fund the account without cash, and submit a clear order through the broker. After execution, reconcile the broker’s confirmation with NCCPL and CDC alerts.
What you need before placing a PSX share order
A PSX purchase involves several separate roles. The broker is your trading intermediary: it accepts your instructions and submits orders to PSX’s automated trading system. CDC is the share-delivery and custody infrastructure, while NCCPL performs clearing and settlement functions. Your brokerage account records the trading relationship; the CDC arrangement records the shares; and the NCCPL UIN links your brokerage accounts and transactions to you.

Keep these requirements in view before sending money or documents:
- A broker recognised by PSX and licensed by SECP for brokerage services.
- A brokerage account opened in your own name, unless a lawful joint or authorised arrangement applies.
- A CDC sub-account connected to the brokerage account, or an individual CDC Investor Account if you choose direct individual custody.
- An NCCPL UIN assigned to you.
- Accepted non-cash funding and a written schedule of commission, transaction fees, CDC charges, taxes and other levies.
- A reliable way to receive trade confirmations and NCCPL and CDC alerts.
These are account and execution mechanics, not a recommendation to buy any particular company. The value of shares can rise or fall, and the process below does not remove investment risk.
#1 Best Overall
Step 1: Choose and verify a PSX broker
Confirm the legal status first
SECP describes securities brokerage as a regulated activity under the Securities Act, 2015 and states that every securities broker offering brokerage services to the public must be licensed. Before sharing identity documents or transferring funds, check the firm and the relevant branch against the current SECP brokers and agents licensing records and PSX’s recognised-broker information.
Do not treat a website, social-media account or sales representative as proof of authorisation. Verify that the legal entity you are contracting with is the same entity named in the licence and account-opening documents. If you will deal at a branch, verify that branch as well.
Compare service features rather than picking on a name
PSX guidance recommends comparing the features that affect how you will actually trade and monitor the account. Ask each shortlisted broker for:

There is no universal “best” broker in the official material. Charges, tools and service levels vary, so obtain current written terms and compare like-for-like services. PSX’s account-security guidance is available at Secure Your Account.
Step 2: Open the brokerage, CDC and NCCPL arrangements
Apply in your own name
Complete the broker’s account-opening form and read its terms before signing. For a standard individual application, PSX lists identity documents for the applicant and, where relevant, joint holders or nominees. If another person will place trades for you, the broker may require written authorisation or related documents. Requirements vary by investor status and by broker, so use the broker’s current checklist rather than relying on an old form.
Ask for the broker’s schedule of commission, transaction fees and CDC charges at onboarding. Keeping that schedule with your account records makes later confirmations easier to audit.

Use online onboarding when available
PSX provides an online account-opening facility through participating brokers. Availability, identity checks and the documents accepted are determined by the participating broker.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEligible resident Pakistanis with local bank accounts may also be able to start onboarding through PSX’s Shared KYC process. Shared KYC can remove the need for physical presence or physical document submission for qualifying applicants, but eligibility and the final account-opening steps still need to be confirmed with the selected broker.
Understand the custody choices
A normal brokerage relationship is paired with a CDC sub-account. Shares purchased through the broker are delivered into that custody arrangement. PSX also encourages investors to consider an individual CDC Investor Account, which is opened at CDC and provides direct individual custody. The practical choice depends on the broker’s process, your record-keeping preference and the custody services available to you; direct custody is not a guarantee of better investment results.
NCCPL assigns a UIN used to identify your brokerage accounts and transactions. Confirm the UIN assignment and ensure the name and identification details in your broker, CDC and NCCPL records match your documents. Correct discrepancies promptly through the broker’s formal support channel.
Step 3: Fund the account safely and calculate the real cost
Use a permitted non-cash method
Deposit funds using the method your broker accepts, such as the bank-transfer route described in its written instructions. PSX cautions investors against cash deposits. Use an account and payment trail that clearly identifies you, retain the transfer evidence and wait for the broker to show the funds as available before submitting an order.

Read every component of the fee schedule
Your total outlay is not necessarily the share price multiplied by the number of shares. Depending on the transaction and the rules in force, the broker may show commission, transaction charges, CDC charges, capital-gains tax and other applicable taxes or levies. PSX states that commission varies among brokers and that taxes and levies can apply. There is therefore no single reliable “all-in” percentage for every investor.
Rank #3
| Cost or record | What to ask the broker | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | What rate or per-trade amount applies, and are there minimums? | It changes the amount debited for an executed order. |
| Transaction fees | Which exchange, regulatory or platform charges are passed through? | These can appear separately from commission. |
| CDC charges | Which custody or settlement charges apply to this account? | They relate to delivery and custody of securities. |
| Taxes and levies | Which current taxes apply to this trade and to your investor status? | Tax treatment depends on current rules and circumstances. |
| Funding and withdrawal rules | How long do deposits, withdrawals and reversals take? | It helps you avoid placing an order before funds are usable. |
Ask for the schedule in writing and check the date or version. Tax rules, exchange charges and broker tariffs can change; confirm them immediately before a substantial trade.
Step 4: Decide what to buy and give an unambiguous order
Prepare the order details
Once the account is active and funded, decide the security and quantity you intend to purchase. Your instruction should identify the listed company or security unambiguously, the number of shares, any price or validity fields required by the broker’s order interface, and any other information the broker asks for. Do not rely on a ticker abbreviation if it could be confused with another listing; use the security details displayed in the broker’s PSX-enabled system.
This guide explains how to transmit and verify an order, not how to select a company or predict its return. Review the issuer’s information, your risk tolerance and the amount you can afford to lose before sending the instruction.
Submit through the broker
Use the broker’s own online application or the approved telephone, branch or other channel stated in your account terms. Follow the platform’s confirmation screen carefully: verify the security, quantity and price information before final submission. Keep a timestamped copy or screenshot where the broker permits it.
The broker routes the instruction to PSX’s automated trading system. An instruction is not the same as an execution: it may remain pending, be partially executed or be rejected under the applicable market and account rules. Check the order status in the broker’s system or ask the broker for the status rather than assuming a submitted order bought shares.
Step 5: Confirm execution within the record trail
Review the broker’s trade confirmation
PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide says the customer should receive a broker trade confirmation within 24 hours of execution. The confirmation should show transaction details, commission and other applicable taxes or levies. Compare it with the order you authorised:
Rank #4
- Security and quantity executed.
- Execution price and trade date.
- Commission, transaction charges, CDC charges and displayed taxes or levies.
- Any unexecuted balance if the order was only partly filled.
Report an unexplained discrepancy to the broker promptly using the contact method in your account documents, and retain the confirmation and your original instruction.

PSX’s investor guidance describes NCCPL trade alerts and CDC alerts when securities move into or out of the account. Compare those messages with the broker confirmation and your account statements. The broker executes the trade instruction, NCCPL handles settlement and CDC records delivery and custody; all three records should tell a consistent story.
If an expected alert does not arrive, check your registered mobile number and email address, the alert settings and any spam or blocked-message folder. Then contact the broker through its official channel. Do not send identity documents or payment details to an unverified number claiming to “fix” an alert.
Standard brokerage account or Sahulat Account?
What the simplified account is designed to do
PSX presents Sahulat as a simplified account for local individual retail investors. Its dedicated Sahulat Account page says an applicant selects a broker, completes the simplified account-opening form and provides a copy of the CNIC. It describes trading in the Ready Market, excludes specified leveraged products and says the account can be converted to a normal trading account.
Resolve the published limit conflict before trading
PSX’s dedicated Sahulat page states a per-account purchase-position limit of PKR 3 million. However, PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide states a PKR 1 million maximum position and net-trade amount. The pages are inconsistent, and the available material does not establish which cap a particular broker currently applies.
Do not assume that either figure will be accepted for your account. Ask the chosen broker, before depositing or trading, to confirm in writing:

- How and when conversion to a normal account can be requested.
Compare the two account paths
| Feature | Standard account | Sahulat account |
|---|---|---|
| Applicant | Requirements depend on investor status and the broker’s approved onboarding process. | PSX describes it for local individual retail investors. |
| Opening documents | Standard identity, holder, nominee and authorisation documents may apply. | PSX’s page describes a simplified form and CNIC copy; confirm current checks with the broker. |
| Markets/products | Subject to the broker’s terms and applicable rules. | Ready Market access is described; specified leveraged products are excluded. |
| Position limit | No universal figure stated in the supplied official guidance. | Dedicated page: PKR 3 million; Investor Awareness Guide: PKR 1 million. Verify the applicable current cap. |
| Conversion | Already the normal trading-account structure. | PSX’s dedicated page says conversion to a normal trading account is possible. |
How custody and settlement differ from your brokerage account
It is easy to treat “the account” as one place, but three infrastructures are involved:
| Institution or record | Primary function | What you should check |
|---|---|---|
| Brokerage account | Trading relationship and order submission. | Account holder name, authorised channels, order history, fees and statements. |
| CDC sub-account or CDC Investor Account | Delivery and custody of shares. | That purchased securities appear under the correct identity and that movement alerts arrive. |
| NCCPL UIN and records | Investor identification, clearing and settlement records. | UIN assignment, trade alerts and consistency with broker and CDC records. |
A CDC sub-account is associated with the broker relationship. An individual CDC Investor Account is a separate direct-custody option to investigate with CDC and the broker. Ask what account structure will be opened, who can initiate transfers and how statements are delivered before you sign.
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
Sending money before verifying the broker
Check the SECP licence and PSX recognition first. Transfer only to the bank details supplied through the broker’s formal documentation, and keep the receipt.
Using an account in someone else’s name
PSX guidance points investors toward an account in their own name. A friend’s or intermediary’s account can make ownership, alerts and dispute resolution unclear. Use the formal joint-holder or authorised-person process when it genuinely applies.
Assuming a submitted order executed
Look at the status in the broker’s system and wait for the execution record. Pending, rejected and partially executed orders require different actions.
Ignoring the fee schedule
Read commission, transaction charges, CDC charges and taxes before deciding how much cash to keep available. A balance that covers only the displayed share price may not cover the complete debit.
Relying on one alert
Use the broker confirmation, NCCPL alert and CDC movement record as separate checks. A missing or inconsistent record should trigger a prompt query to the broker.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Following the wrong Sahulat limit
Because PSX pages publish PKR 3 million and PKR 1 million figures, obtain the broker’s current applicable limit and eligibility conditions in writing before using Sahulat.
