A cash dividend puts money in your account after declaration and applicable withholding. A bonus issue increases the number of shares recorded in your account but does not, by itself, put cash in your hands or add resources to the company. Choose by matching the distribution to your cash-flow needs, the company’s fundamentals and valuation, your tax status, and your investment horizon.
Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) describes the basic distinction plainly: “Dividend can be cash dividend or bonus dividend/ shares.” The decision is therefore not simply “cash versus free shares.” It is a choice between current liquidity and a change in the form and unit count of your investment.

Start with what you actually receive
Cash dividend: spendable money
A cash dividend is a payment in rupees for each share you hold on the relevant entitlement date. Once the dividend has been declared and processed, the gross amount is reduced by any withholding that applies to your taxpayer status and the security. You can spend the net amount, hold it as cash, or reinvest it.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPSX defines dividend yield as cash dividend divided by share price. For example, a Rs5 dividend on a Rs100 share represents a 5% yield before tax. That percentage measures the cash distribution relative to the quoted price; it does not prove that the company is financially strong, that the dividend will recur, or that the share is cheap.

Bonus shares: more units, no immediate cash
A bonus issue credits additional shares according to a stated ratio. A 20% bonus on 100 shares would add 20 shares, leaving you with 120. You do not receive spendable money merely because the extra shares appear in your account.
If all shareholders receive the same ratio, each holder’s percentage ownership generally remains unchanged. The number of units rises, but that arithmetic alone does not establish that your economic wealth has risen. PSX’s 2024–25 federal-budget proposal characterizes bonus shares as a reclassification of reserves and argues that they do not add resources to the recipient. That document expresses PSX’s policy position; it is not a neutral tax ruling or a guarantee about any particular company’s future price.
Cash dividends and bonus shares compared
| Decision axis | Cash dividend | Bonus shares |
|---|---|---|
| What arrives | Cash for each entitled share, less applicable withholding. | Additional shares credited in the announced ratio; no cash payment solely for the issue. |
| Immediate liquidity | High: the net payment can be spent or reinvested. | None from the issue itself. You would have to sell shares to raise cash. |
| Share count | Unchanged by the dividend. | Increases according to the bonus ratio. |
| Value interpretation | Cash yield is dividend divided by share price, but yield alone is not an investment-quality test. | A larger count is not proof of added wealth; examine reserves, earnings, valuation and per-share measures. |
| Tax and processing | Withholding depends on current law and your circumstances; PSX describes electronic payment to the designated bank account. | Tax treatment can be time-sensitive. A 2026 issuer prospectus describes a collection relating to bonus shares under section 236Z; confirm the current rule and the issuer’s notice. |
| Usually fits | An investor who needs income, values certainty of cash, or prefers to decide independently where to reinvest. | An investor who wants to retain exposure, does not need immediate income, and accepts a higher unit count with no guaranteed increase in total value. |
The final row is a practical fit, not a prediction of superior returns. Future performance depends on the company, the price you pay, earnings, governance, market conditions and how you use the distribution.
Why a bonus issue is not automatically a gain
The reserve reclassification point
A bonus issue generally moves an amount within the company’s equity accounts into paid-up share capital and gives shareholders more units. It does not, on its own, bring new cash into the business. The PSX budget proposal makes this argument explicitly; read it as an exchange submission rather than as individualized advice.
Suppose, purely as an illustration, that you own 100 shares priced at Rs100, so the quoted value is Rs10,000. A 20% bonus gives you 120 shares. If the market valued the company at the same total amount immediately after the issue and there were no taxes, costs or market movement, the arithmetic price would be about Rs83.33 per share (Rs10,000 divided by 120). Real prices can differ because investors reassess the company, liquidity changes and supply and demand move the quote. The example shows why counting shares is not the same as measuring wealth.
The per-share effect
PSX defines earnings per share (EPS) as net profit after tax divided by the number of shares outstanding. Its investor guide states: “EARNING PER SHARE (EPS): This is a ratio calculated by dividing a company’s net profit after tax by the number of shares outstanding.” If net profit is unchanged while the share count rises, EPS falls mechanically. That does not mean the company earned less cash; it means the same profit is spread over more shares.

What a cash dividend can—and cannot—tell you
A regular cash distribution can be useful evidence that management is willing and able to return part of the company’s cash to owners. It is not proof that the payout is sustainable. A company can fund a single large dividend by drawing down reserves, selling assets or borrowing, while a profitable company may retain cash for expansion or debt reduction.
Check whether the dividend is covered by recurring earnings and operating cash flow, whether debt covenants restrict distributions, and whether the company has a history of changing its payout. Compare the dividend yield with the share’s valuation and with realistic alternatives, not with a headline percentage alone. A high yield can result from a falling share price or a one-off payment.
How dividend rights and payment work on PSX
Declaration
PSX’s shareholder-rights guide distinguishes between interim and final dividends. The board declares an interim dividend. A final dividend is recommended by the board and declared in a general meeting. You have a right to a dividend that has been declared for shares to which you are entitled under the company’s announced timetable.
Electronic payment
The same guide says listed-company cash dividends are paid electronically to the designated bank account and assigns responsibility for payment within 15 working days after declaration. Before an expected payment, confirm that the bank details held through your broker, registrar or investor record are accurate. If the payment does not arrive, keep the company’s declaration and your account statement and contact the registrar or investor-relations contact shown in the issuer’s notice.
Corporate-action documents
Read the issuer’s notice rather than relying on a social-media summary. Check the dividend or bonus ratio, entitlement and record-date instructions, book-closure information, payment timing, and any tax or documentation language. A bonus announcement can also include a fractional-share treatment or other operational detail; follow the exact notice for your security.

Tax treatment is current, security-specific and status-specific
Do not assume that cash dividends are always taxed at one rate or that bonus shares are tax-free. The applicable result can depend on the tax year, whether you are an active or inactive taxpayer, the type of holder, the security and subsequent rule changes.
For a current example—not a complete schedule—the LSE SPAC-I Limited prospectus hosted by PSX, dated 20 February 2026, states 15% withholding on cash dividends for active taxpayers and 30% for inactive taxpayers. It also describes collection of tax equal to 10% of the value of bonus shares under section 236Z, as amended by Finance Act 2025, using the valuation basis set out in that prospectus.
Those figures are the prospectus’s summary for its offering context, not a universal tax opinion for every Pakistani investor or every listed security. Before acting, verify the current Income Tax Ordinance, Finance Act amendments, applicable tax authority guidance and the issuer’s corporate-action notice. If the amount is material or your status is unusual, obtain advice from a qualified Pakistani tax professional.

A decision framework for Pakistan investors
1. Identify your cash requirement
If you need money for living expenses, school fees, debt payments or an emergency reserve, a cash dividend addresses that need directly. A bonus issue does not: selling shares to create cash introduces market-price risk, brokerage costs and the possibility of selling at an inconvenient time.
2. Test the company before considering the form
First decide whether you want to own the company at its current price. Review earnings quality, operating cash flow, debt, competitive position, governance and the stated reason for distributing reserves. A weak company does not become attractive because it announces a bonus, and a strong company does not become unattractive merely because it retains earnings.
3. Compare after-tax, after-cost outcomes
Calculate the net cash you would actually receive, not just the announced gross dividend. For a bonus, identify any collection or withholding described in the notice and the effect on your cost records or future sale. Include dealing costs if you would sell part of the position to fund spending.

4. Consider concentration and portfolio balance
More shares can make a holding feel larger even when your percentage ownership is unchanged. Decide whether the resulting position would over-concentrate your portfolio. A cash payment gives you the option to diversify into another asset; a bonus keeps the exposure in the same issuer unless you sell.
5. Match the choice to your horizon
An investor with a long horizon and no current income need may prefer to keep exposure and let the company deploy capital, but only if management has a credible reinvestment record and the valuation is reasonable. An investor with a near-term liability may reasonably value cash even when the bonus ratio looks numerically attractive.
6. Treat management’s distribution policy as information, not a guarantee
Ask why the company chose cash, bonus shares or a combination. Retained cash may support growth, acquisitions or debt reduction; a bonus may improve trading affordability or reflect accumulated reserves. None of those explanations guarantees a higher future share price. Judge the evidence in the company’s reports and notices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Two hypothetical choices
Investor A needs income
Investor A owns 1,000 shares and the company declares Rs4 per share. Gross cash is Rs4,000. If the investor’s applicable withholding were 15%—the active-taxpayer rate stated in the cited 20 February 2026 prospectus, used here only as an illustration—the net would be Rs3,400. Investor A should confirm that rate applies before budgeting and should compare the company’s sustainability with the need for reliable cash.
Investor B is accumulating for the long term
Investor B owns 500 shares and receives a 10% bonus, adding 50 shares. There is no Rs cash payment from the issue. Investor B should recalculate the holding’s weight, review the post-issue EPS and valuation, and decide whether the company still deserves the capital. If not, selling some shares may be appropriate; if yes, retaining them preserves exposure, subject to any tax and dealing consequences.
Checklist before you accept either distribution
- Read the issuer’s official announcement and identify whether the distribution is interim, final, bonus or a combination.
- Record the entitlement and record-date instructions and confirm that your holding qualifies.
- For cash, calculate gross and estimated net rupees per share using the withholding rule that actually applies to you.
- For bonus shares, calculate the new share count, revised average-cost records and the holding’s percentage of your portfolio.
- Revisit EPS, profit, operating cash flow, debt and return on equity after allowing for the new denominator.
- Check the current tax law and the issuer’s stated collection or withholding arrangements; do not rely on an old forum post.
- Confirm your designated bank-account details for electronic cash payment and keep the declaration and account statement.
- Decide what you will do with the result: spend, reinvest, diversify or rebalance. Write that plan before the market moves.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling bonus shares “free money”
The shares may be free of a purchase transaction, but the issue does not automatically create company resources or personal wealth. Compare total position value and per-share metrics, not just units.

Choosing the highest yield without checking its source
A yield can look high because the share price fell or because the payment was exceptional. Separate recurring earnings from one-off items and inspect cash generation.
Ignoring taxpayer status
Using the active-taxpayer rate when you are inactive can overstate your expected cash. Recheck status and current rates for the relevant tax year and security.
Assuming a declaration means immediate cash
Declaration, processing and electronic credit are separate steps. PSX’s guide describes payment within 15 working days after declaration; monitor the designated account and escalate a missing payment through the issuer’s stated channel.
Recommended Free Tools
Confusing a lower share price with a bargain
After a bonus, the quoted price and EPS can change mechanically. Compare market capitalization, earnings, cash flow and valuation ratios on a consistent post-issue basis.
Letting the distribution decide whether to own the stock
Make the ownership decision first. A distribution is one component of return and capital allocation, not a substitute for evaluating the business.
Bottom line
Choose a cash dividend when spendable, predictable liquidity matters and the company’s payout is sustainable after tax. Consider bonus shares when you want to maintain exposure, do not need immediate cash and have verified that the underlying business and valuation justify a larger unit count. In both cases, use the issuer’s current notice and tax rules, and measure your outcome in after-tax total value—not in the number of shares or the headline yield alone.
