Buying an NFT is a blockchain transaction, not simply an online checkout. You need a compatible crypto wallet, funds on the correct blockchain, enough money for network fees, and a reliable way to verify that the collection is genuine.
This guide covers two current purchase routes: OpenSea for Ethereum-compatible NFTs and Magic Eden for Solana and other supported chains. It also explains how mints, offers, gas fees, scams, and failed transactions affect the real cost of buying.
What you need before buying an NFT
Prepare these four things before opening a marketplace:
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Compatible crypto wallet | Receives the NFT and approves the purchase transaction. MetaMask is one option for Ethereum-compatible networks; OpenSea also supports email-based wallets. |
| Cryptocurrency | You need the currency accepted by the listing, such as ETH, SOL, or a supported stablecoin. |
| Extra funds for gas | The blockchain may charge a network transaction fee in addition to the NFT’s price. |
| Verified marketplace link | A marketplace search result is not proof that a collection is authentic. Begin with the creator’s official website or verified social account. |
A self-custodial wallet gives you control of the private keys. That also means responsibility for security: anyone with the wallet’s Secret Recovery Phrase or private key can control its assets, and the wallet provider generally cannot recover them. MetaMask’s Secret Recovery Phrase security guidance explains this risk. Never give the phrase to a marketplace, support representative, or person contacting you by direct message.

- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Step 1: Set up and secure your wallet
- Download the wallet only from its official website or an official app-store listing.
- Create a new wallet and write down the Secret Recovery Phrase offline.
- Store the phrase somewhere secure. Do not photograph it, email it, paste it into cloud storage, or enter it into a website.
- Check that the wallet supports the NFT’s blockchain.
- Use a separate, lower-value “hot” wallet for routine marketplace activity if you plan to buy valuable NFTs. Keep long-term holdings in a more secure wallet where practical.
Do not keep more money in a wallet connected to unfamiliar websites than you are prepared to risk. A wallet connection alone does not transfer an NFT, but signing an approval or transaction can authorize a contract to move assets. OpenSea’s wallet guidance recommends separating a lower-value wallet for routine activity from a wallet used to store valuable assets.
Step 2: Fund the wallet
You can usually add cryptocurrency in one of three ways:
- Buy crypto on a centralized exchange and withdraw it to your wallet.
- Use the wallet’s built-in purchase service.
- Use a marketplace-integrated card or crypto on-ramp, where available.
Funding through OpenSea
On OpenSea, click your wallet balance in the upper-right corner. Select Deposit to transfer cryptocurrency from an exchange, or select Buy to purchase crypto by card through the available third-party provider. The described card flow uses MoonPay and may include both a card-processing fee and a blockchain network fee, according to OpenSea’s purchase guide.
Before withdrawing crypto from an exchange, check all of the following:
- The destination wallet address.
- The selected blockchain or network.
- The token being sent.
- The exchange’s withdrawal fee.
- Whether the marketplace supports that network and token.
Sending funds to the wrong address or over an unsupported network can make them unusable or unrecoverable. If you are making a large transfer, sending a small test amount first can reduce the risk of an avoidable error.
Step 3: Verify the NFT collection
Do not rely only on an NFT’s image, collection name, floor price, or marketplace badge. Anyone may create and list a similarly named or copied NFT, particularly on a self-serve marketplace. OpenSea’s guidance on fraudulent content notes that it is a self-serve peer-to-peer marketplace.

- Start at the creator’s official website, verified social account, or official community channel.
- Use the marketplace link published there rather than selecting a similarly named search result.
- Find the collection’s smart-contract address.
- Compare that address with the address published by the creator or shown on a recognized blockchain explorer.
- Check the blockchain, token ID, creator, ownership history, sales history, and item activity.
On OpenSea, the item page’s About and Blockchain details sections show information such as the blockchain, token ID, and smart contract. The Activity tab shows past owners, sales, transfers, and the original mint. See OpenSea’s item-page review guide.
A verification badge is an identification signal, not a guarantee that the NFT is authentic, valuable, safe, or a suitable investment. OpenSea describes badges as identification signals. Also read the project’s license or terms. Owning the token does not automatically give you copyright or unrestricted commercial rights to the associated artwork.

How to buy a fixed-price NFT on OpenSea
Connect the wallet
- Go to opensea.io by typing the address yourself or using the creator’s verified link.
- Click Connect wallet.
- Select your wallet provider.
- Approve the connection in the wallet.
If your profile looks empty, check that you connected the correct wallet address, selected the correct account, and are viewing the correct blockchain.
Complete the purchase
- Open the NFT’s item page.
- Click Buy now.
- Review the Checkout window, including the NFT price and displayed fees.
- Read the transaction details in the wallet pop-up.
- Check the recipient, amount, token, contract, and any requested permissions.
- Confirm or sign the transaction in the wallet.
- Wait for blockchain confirmation before treating the purchase as complete.
Blockchain transactions are generally final. OpenSea warns buyers to review transaction details before signing; a marketplace normally cannot reverse a confirmed purchase because you changed your mind, bought the wrong item, or failed to notice a copied collection. See OpenSea’s fixed-price purchase guidance.
OpenSea also allows purchases from collection pages by selecting Buy now on an item card. Its selection flow can include up to 50 items, with a Buy now or Sweep option in the bottom bar. Buying several NFTs can multiply the amount at risk, so review each item and the combined total carefully.
How to buy an NFT on Magic Eden
Magic Eden supports Solana, EVM-compatible networks, and other blockchains. The wallet, payment currency, and transaction fee depend on the chain used by the listing. See Magic Eden’s supported currencies and blockchains.

Solana listings commonly use SOL, but do not assume every Magic Eden listing uses the same currency. Confirm the chain and payment token on the individual item page.
Buying an NFT through a mint or drop
A secondary-market purchase transfers an NFT that already exists from its current owner. A mint or drop uses the creator’s contract to create or assign an NFT to your wallet.
For a mint:
- Use the official mint page linked by the creator.
- Connect the correct wallet.
- Check the mint price, supply, start time, end time, blockchain, and wallet limit.
- Confirm that you have the required currency plus enough gas.
- Click the mint button on the official page.
- Read every wallet transaction before signing.
The final artwork may not be visible immediately. On OpenSea Drops, NFTs do not exist on-chain until buyers mint them, and unrevealed metadata may prevent you from seeing the final item at purchase time. OpenSea’s Drops FAQ describes this process.
A failed mint can still cost money. The blockchain may charge gas for processing an attempted transaction even when the mint fails, and OpenSea says it cannot refund failed-transaction gas fees. This is especially relevant during a crowded drop or when the available supply sells out while your transaction is pending; see the OpenSea Drops FAQ.
Making an offer instead of buying immediately
An offer is a proposal, not an immediate purchase. On OpenSea, the process is:
- Open the NFT item page.
- Click Make offer.
- Enter the amount and currency.
- Choose how long the offer should remain active.
- Click Review item offer.
- Complete the wallet signature or transaction requests.
OpenSea’s current defaults include a 30-day offer duration, a maximum duration of six months, and a minimum offer of 0.0001 ETH. An offer in a currency that has not previously been enabled in the wallet may require a one-time gas transaction. See OpenSea’s offer instructions.

What does it cost to buy an NFT?
The headline price is not necessarily the total cost. Before signing, look for:
Recommended Free Tools
| Cost | What to check |
|---|---|
| NFT price | The listed amount and payment currency. |
| Marketplace fee | Any fee added by the platform. |
| Creator earnings | Royalty or creator-earnings amount, if shown. |
| Gas or network fee | The fee calculated by the blockchain and wallet at the time of the transaction. |
| Card or on-ramp fee | Processing charges, spreads, and other costs when buying crypto by card. |
| Exchange withdrawal fee | The charge for moving funds from an exchange to the wallet. |
| Currency conversion | Spread or conversion costs when paying in a different currency. |
Network fees fluctuate with blockchain demand and are not fixed by the NFT creator. Some OpenSea email-based wallet flows may allow supported stablecoins to pay gas on supported chains through account abstraction, but this is not available for every wallet, chain, or transaction. Do not assume you can avoid holding the chain’s native token. See OpenSea’s stablecoin gas guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common problems when buying NFTs
“Insufficient funds”
You may have enough for the NFT but not enough for gas. Other possibilities include funds held on the wrong network, the wrong payment token, an offer requiring WETH or another approved currency, or a card purchase that has not settled yet.
The transaction failed but gas was charged
Gas pays for the network’s processing work, not only successful purchases. A failed transaction can therefore still consume gas. Crowded mints and listings that disappear before confirmation are common examples. See OpenSea’s Drops FAQ.
The NFT does not appear in the wallet or marketplace
First check that the transaction is confirmed. Then verify the connected network and wallet account. The marketplace may still be indexing the transaction, or the item may be hidden or delisted. A delisted NFT can remain in your wallet and on the blockchain even if it is no longer visible on OpenSea; see OpenSea’s delisted-items guidance.

The listing disappeared
Another buyer may have purchased it, the seller may have canceled it, or the listing may have expired. Ignore unsolicited messages offering a replacement transaction or claiming that you must “fix” the purchase.
The wallet requests an unexpected approval
An approval can authorize a smart contract to move tokens or NFTs. An Approve all permission may cover every NFT in a collection, not just the item you intended to buy. Coinbase’s guide to dapp permissions and token approvals explains this risk. Do not sign a transaction when you do not understand the contract, token, amount, recipient, or permission scope.
The collection appears copied
Similar names, copied images, fake social accounts, and lookalike websites are warning signs. Check the contract address against the creator’s official information and inspect the ownership and activity history. OpenSea prohibits impersonation and copied or misleading collections, but its policy cannot eliminate the risk before you buy; see OpenSea’s prohibited and disputed items policy.
Someone claiming to be support contacts you
Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key. MetaMask says it has no phone support; Telegram, WhatsApp, or Instagram groups claiming to be official MetaMask support should be treated as potential scams. See MetaMask’s official support channel guidance.

Outdated advice to ignore
- “You must buy through Coinbase NFT.” The standalone Coinbase NFT marketplace began its sunset on July 10, 2024. Use an active marketplace or supported on-chain application instead. See Coinbase’s NFT marketplace migration guidance.
- “Every NFT purchase requires ETH.” The currency depends on the blockchain and listing. Solana NFTs commonly use SOL, while other networks use their own native or supported tokens.
- “A marketplace badge proves an NFT is safe or valuable.” A badge helps identify an account or collection; it is not an investment guarantee. See OpenSea’s badge guidance.
- “Gas is always paid in the native token.” Some supported account-abstraction transactions can use stablecoins, but availability varies. See OpenSea’s stablecoin gas guidance.
- “Buying the token gives you copyright.” Token ownership and intellectual-property rights are separate. Read the project’s license.
- “The marketplace can reverse a bad purchase.” Confirmed blockchain transactions are generally irreversible. See OpenSea’s fixed-price purchase guidance.
Final checklist before signing
- Confirm that you are using the official marketplace or mint URL.
- Compare the collection’s contract address with an official source.
- Confirm the blockchain and payment currency.
- Check the token ID, creator, ownership history, and sales activity.
- Review the purchase price and every displayed fee.
- Leave enough funds for gas.
- Read the wallet’s recipient, amount, contract, and requested permissions.
- Never enter or share your Secret Recovery Phrase on a website.
- Assume a completed transaction is final.
FAQ
Do I need cryptocurrency to buy an NFT?
Usually, yes. You need the currency accepted by the listing and generally extra funds for the blockchain network fee. Some marketplaces offer card-based crypto purchases or other payment flows, but the available currencies and fees vary by marketplace and blockchain.
Is buying an NFT an investment?
It can be highly speculative. An NFT may lose most or all of its purchase price, and ownership does not guarantee future demand, income, copyright, or commercial rights. Only risk money you can afford to lose, and assess the collection’s authenticity and terms before buying.
Can I get a refund if I buy the wrong NFT?
Usually not after the blockchain transaction is confirmed. Marketplaces generally cannot reverse an on-chain transfer. Check the collection, contract address, token ID, recipient, amount, and permissions before signing.
What is the safest way to avoid an NFT scam?
Begin with the creator’s official website or verified account, follow its marketplace link, compare the smart-contract address, inspect the item’s history, and ignore unsolicited support messages. Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private key.
The Bottom Line
To buy an NFT safely, verify the collection independently, use a wallet that supports the correct blockchain, fund it with the right currency plus a gas reserve, and inspect the wallet transaction before signing. A marketplace badge is not a guarantee, and a confirmed purchase is usually final. Treat the NFT as a speculative purchase—not a guaranteed investment—and never risk money you cannot afford to lose.
