How to Buy Individual Stocks: Brokerage Accounts, Orders, and Fees

A practical U.S. beginner’s guide to buying individual stocks through a brokerage account, from choosing cash or margin to checking orders, costs, and settlement.

To buy an individual stock in the United States, you will generally open and fund a brokerage account, find the company’s shares by name and ticker, choose an order type, review the details and costs, and submit the trade. Before doing that, decide whether you want a cash or margin account and verify the broker’s registration, disclosures, and complete fee schedule. A market order favors execution but does not lock in a price; a limit order sets a price boundary but may not execute.

What buying an individual stock means

A stock represents an ownership interest in a company. Buying an individual stock means placing an order for shares of one publicly traded company—not buying a diversified basket of companies. Your eventual result depends on the price at which you buy and sell, any costs that apply, and how the stock performs. A stock’s past or current price does not establish what it will be worth later.

For most U.S. self-directed investors, the ordinary way to place a trade is through a brokerage account. The broker provides access to markets and handles the order. The price you see in the app or website may change before your order is handled, and the order may fill at a different price or not fill at all, depending on its instructions and market conditions.

There are other ways to acquire shares. Some companies offer direct stock purchase or dividend reinvestment plans, but those plans can have eligibility rules, minimums, fees, and batch processing rather than the same timing and order controls available through a brokerage account. A stock fund is another way to invest in equities, but it holds a basket of investments rather than buying one chosen company’s stock. The SEC discusses these alternatives in its investor guidance on stocks and brokerage accounts.

How to open a brokerage account

1. Decide whether you need a cash or margin account

In a cash account, you pay the full amount due for the securities you buy. In a margin account, the broker may lend you money against assets in your account. The loan carries interest, and if the value of the collateral falls, the broker can require you to add funds or securities or sell holdings. Borrowing can expose you to losses beyond the cash you contributed.

Account type How a purchase is funded Main consideration
Cash You pay in full for the purchase. Confirm how the broker handles available cash, deposits, and unsettled transactions.
Margin You may borrow from the broker against account collateral. Interest and collateral requirements apply; falling values can lead to a demand for more collateral or a forced sale.

If you do not intend to borrow, read the application carefully and confirm whether margin is enabled. Account labels, defaults, eligibility rules, and settings vary by firm. Do not assume that selecting a general investing application automatically gives you the cash-account setup you want.

2. Check the firm and any representative

Before opening an account, verify the brokerage firm and, if you will work with an individual representative, check that person as well. Use official registration and disciplinary-history resources, including the SEC’s and FINRA’s investor tools, rather than relying on an advertisement, app-store listing, or a company’s own description. Registration checks help you confirm status and review available disclosures; they are not a guarantee of investment performance or a substitute for reading the account terms.

Review the firm’s relationship summary and applicable disclosures. These documents describe services, fees, conflicts, and other information that can help you understand the relationship you are entering. The SEC’s brokerage-account guidance also explains that most broker-dealers generally register with the SEC and become FINRA members. Check the current status of the firm you are considering.

3. Compare the account terms and costs

Compare brokers using the same questions for the account and trades you actually expect to use. A headline about a low or zero commission is not a complete cost comparison. Review the fee schedule for the account type you are opening and the transactions you may make, including costs that arise only if you borrow or later move your assets elsewhere.

  • Does the account have a maintenance, inactivity, or closing charge?
  • Are there commissions, markups, markdowns, or other transaction costs for the security and order you plan to trade?
  • What interest rate and terms apply if margin borrowing is available?
  • Are there wire, asset-transfer, or account-transfer charges?
  • Which order types does the broker offer, and how does it handle them?
  • Does it support the kinds of securities and order sizes you expect to use?
  • Can you get the customer support and educational help you need?

Fees and account features can differ by broker and account, and they can change. Read the current documents for the specific account rather than treating a fee described elsewhere as universal. The SEC notes that brokerage costs can include commissions or markups and account charges such as maintenance, inactivity, closing, margin interest, wire, or asset-transfer fees.

4. Understand what SIPC protection does—and does not—mean

SIPC protection concerns eligible customer property when a member brokerage fails; it does not insure an investment against a decline in value. The SEC’s account-opening bulletin describes a maximum of $500,000 in protection per customer capacity, including a $250,000 limit for cash, for qualifying claims at a failed SIPC-member brokerage. These limits do not make a stock safe or guarantee that an investor will recover market losses. Check the applicable SIPC information and the broker’s membership status for your circumstances.

5. Complete the application and fund the account

The application will ask for information needed to establish the account and verify your identity. The precise requirements, minimums, funding methods, processing times, and securities available vary by firm. There is no single minimum deposit or universal promise that deposited funds will be available instantly. Before submitting the application, confirm the account type and fee terms. After approval, follow the broker’s instructions to add funds and check the account for the amount available to trade.

How to place an order to buy shares

1. Find and verify the security

Search within the broker’s interface using the company name or ticker symbol, then verify that the result is the intended company and security. Tickers can be similar, and a search result is not itself confirmation that you have selected the right investment. Read the security name and any identifying details the broker provides before moving to the order screen.

2. Choose the quantity

Enter the number of shares you intend to buy, using the quantity options the broker actually supports. Check whether the displayed estimate is based on a current quote and whether any applicable costs are included. A displayed estimate is not a promise of the final execution price, especially for a market order. Do not enter a quantity simply because it uses all the cash shown as available unless that is your considered choice.

3. Choose between a market order and a limit order

The order type determines what price instructions you give the broker. The SEC’s Investor.gov page on order types, updated August 18, 2026, explains the main trade-off: market orders seek execution, while limit orders impose a price boundary but may remain unfilled.

Order type What it instructs Trade-off for a buyer
Market Seek execution at the best available price when the order is handled. Execution is not guaranteed at the last-traded or on-screen price; the price can change.
Limit Buy only at the limit price or lower. Controls the maximum price you will accept, but the order may not execute if the market does not reach that price.

A market order prioritizes getting the order executed, not a particular purchase price. The last trade shown in a quote is not necessarily the price your market order will receive. The SEC also cautions that an order may not execute at the quote visible when you submit it: the broker routes it to a market or venue, and prices can change while it is being handled. Brokers have a duty to seek the best execution reasonably available, but that duty does not guarantee a specific price or outcome.

A buy limit order sets the maximum price you are willing to pay per share. It may execute at that price or lower, but it may not execute at all if the price does not reach the limit while the order is active. For example, if you enter a hypothetical buy limit of $20 per share, the instruction is not to pay more than $20 per share; it does not mean the order will be filled. The example illustrates the instruction only, not a price target or a recommendation.

Brokers may provide additional order instructions, but their availability and exact handling differ. Read the broker’s own order guide before using instructions beyond a market or limit order. Do not assume that a feature, time-in-force option, or order behavior described by one firm works identically at another.

4. Review the order before submitting

Before pressing the final submit button, check the order’s essential details. Brokers can arrange these fields differently, so treat this as a checklist rather than a description of a universal screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Company/security name and ticker
  • Buy direction, not sell
  • Share quantity
  • Order type
  • Limit price or other price instruction, if applicable
  • Time-in-force setting, if offered
  • Estimated total and any displayed fees or warnings

Pause if the displayed details do not match your intent. An incorrect ticker, direction, quantity, or price instruction can create a trade different from the one you meant to place. Review the broker’s disclosures and order guidance if a field or warning is unclear instead of guessing.

5. Submit once, then check the order status

After submitting, look at the order-status page or equivalent record. An order can be filled in full, filled only in part, still open, rejected, or otherwise not executed. The exact status labels vary by broker. Confirm what happened before taking another action.

If you request cancellation, verify that the cancellation succeeded before entering a replacement order. A cancellation request is not the same as a confirmed cancellation; the order may already have filled, or the request may not have completed. Placing a second order before checking can result in an unintended additional trade. Investor.gov puts the distinction succinctly: “Online trading is quick and easy, but online investing takes time.”

What fees should you expect in a brokerage account?

There is no universal fee schedule. The costs that apply depend on the broker, account type, security, and transaction. Read the current schedule and disclosures for your specific account; do not conclude that a trade has no cost solely because a commission is listed as zero.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Cost category What to check When it may matter
Commission or transaction charge Whether the intended trade has a commission or another transaction cost. When placing a buy or sell order.
Markup or markdown Whether the broker or transaction involves a markup or markdown. Depending on the security and how the transaction is handled.
Account maintenance or inactivity Whether charges apply to your account or activity level. While holding the account, including periods when you do not trade.
Closing or transfer fee Costs for closing the account or moving assets. If you leave the broker or transfer assets.
Margin interest The interest rate and borrowing terms. If you borrow through a margin account.
Wire or asset-transfer charge Charges for particular funding or transfer methods. When sending money or moving assets, as applicable.

Also consider execution quality: the price at which an order is filled affects what you pay, and brokers route orders to markets or other venues. If execution practices matter to your choice, review the broker’s disclosures about its order handling and routing. A broker’s duty to seek best execution is not a promise that each order will receive a particular price.

What happens after the trade: confirmation and settlement

Keep the trade record

Once you know whether the order executed, retain the trade confirmation and review the final quantity, execution price, and any fees shown. If the order filled only in part, understand what remains open before deciding what to do next. Your order record and confirmation are more reliable for what actually happened than the estimate shown before submission.

Know the settlement date

For most covered U.S. broker-dealer securities transactions, the standard settlement cycle is T+1: settlement occurs one business day after the trade date. The SEC’s compliance date for the T+1 standard was May 28, 2024. This standard does not apply identically to every product or cross-border transaction, so do not assume that every asset settles on the same schedule. Settlement is distinct from the moment you submit an order or see it execute.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Opening the wrong account type: Check whether margin is enabled if you do not intend to borrow, and read the account agreement before accepting it.
  • Choosing a broker from a headline alone: Verify the firm and any representative, then compare the full fee schedule and relevant disclosures.
  • Treating a quote as a guaranteed fill price: A visible quote or last trade does not lock in the price of a market order.
  • Assuming a limit order must execute: A price boundary protects against paying above your buy limit, but the market may never reach it.
  • Entering a second order before confirming a cancellation: Check whether the first order filled or cancellation succeeded to avoid an accidental duplicate.
  • Equating brokerage protection with investment insurance: SIPC protection is limited to eligible customer property in a member-brokerage failure; it does not cover market losses.

A practical pre-trade checklist

  1. Confirm the account is the type you intended, and understand any borrowing terms.
  2. Verify the brokerage firm and representative through official registration resources.
  3. Read the current relationship summary, disclosures, and fee schedule.
  4. Fund the account and confirm what cash is actually available to trade.
  5. Verify the company name and ticker in the broker’s interface.
  6. Choose the share quantity and an order type whose trade-off you understand.
  7. Review the buy/sell direction, quantity, order type, price instructions, and any time-in-force setting.
  8. After submission, check the execution or cancellation status; keep and review the trade confirmation.
