To buy Google stock, open and fund a brokerage account, then place an order for Alphabet Inc. shares using ticker GOOGL or GOOG. Google is part of Alphabet, so the shares are Alphabet stock—not shares in a separately listed Google company. GOOGL is Class A stock with one vote per share; GOOG is Class C stock with no voting rights. Your broker’s available order types and fractional-share rules may vary.

What you are buying: Alphabet shares, not a separate Google stock

Google is one of Alphabet Inc.’s businesses. The publicly traded shares associated with Google are Alphabet shares, listed under two tickers: GOOGL and GOOG. Alphabet’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K identifies GOOGL as Class A common stock and GOOG as Class C capital stock. Alphabet’s 2024 Form 10-K

Ticker Share class Voting rights
GOOGL Class A One vote per share
GOOG Class C No voting rights
Not publicly traded Class B Ten votes per share; not listed or traded

The share classes represent equity in the same issuer but differ in governance rights. The filing establishes those distinctions; it does not establish that one ticker is a better investment.

How to buy GOOG or GOOGL through a brokerage account

  1. Choose a brokerage firm and account type. Review the firm’s relationship summary, background, account terms, and fees before opening an account. The SEC explains that cash accounts require payment in full for purchases, while margin accounts involve borrowing and interest and can expose you to larger losses. SEC guidance on opening a brokerage account
  2. Fund the account. Follow the broker’s instructions for adding money, and check its policies and any relevant fees before placing an order.
  3. Find the intended share class. Search for GOOGL for Class A or GOOG for Class C. Before proceeding, confirm the issuer and share-class description shown in the broker’s order screen.
  4. Choose an order size. Enter a number of whole shares, or check whether the broker allows fractional orders for the specific Alphabet ticker. If you want to invest a dollar amount that is less than the price of one whole share, confirm the broker’s fractional-share minimums and which order types are available for fractional orders.
  5. Select an order type and review the details. Compare a market order with a limit order, then check the ticker, share class, quantity or dollar amount, order type, and any displayed fees.
  6. Submit the order and verify its status. A submitted order is not proof that it executed. Check whether it filled, the execution price, and—if you canceled it—whether the cancellation was confirmed. SEC guidance on stock order types and order status

Market order or limit order?

Order type Price control Execution trade-off
Market order Does not set a maximum purchase price. Seeks the best available price, but the execution price is not guaranteed and may differ from the last-traded quote as orders and available liquidity change.
Buy limit order Sets the highest price you are willing to pay; it can execute at the limit price or lower. May not fill if the market price does not reach your limit.

Brokerages may offer different order types and apply different policies. Check the order ticket for the options available on your account. The SEC defines a limit order as an instruction to buy or sell at a specified price or better. SEC order-type guidance

Can you buy fractional Alphabet shares?

Possibly, depending on your broker and its rules for GOOG or GOOGL. A fractional share is less than one full share, but fractional trading is not identical across firms. Some firms aggregate fractional orders, some restrict the order types available, and fractional positions generally cannot be transferred to another firm. Confirm availability for the precise ticker, any minimum, execution timing, eligible order types, and transfer handling before placing an order. SEC guidance on fractional-share investing

Risks to understand before investing

Alphabet shares can fall in price, and you can lose money if you sell for less than you paid. Alphabet’s fiscal 2024 Form 10-K says the company intends to pay quarterly cash dividends in the future, subject to review and approval by its board in its sole discretion. That intention is not a guarantee of future dividends or income. For a current, complete view of company risks, consult Alphabet’s latest filings rather than relying only on its fiscal 2024 report.
