The note pays a fixed coupon every six months and returns its face value at maturity, but its market price can fall before then, inflation can reduce the buying power of its payments, and TreasuryDirect generally restricts transfers or sales for 45 calendar days after purchase.
What a 10-year Treasury note is
A Treasury note is a marketable U.S. government security with a fixed term. Notes are issued with 2-, 3-, 5-, 7-, and 10-year maturities. A 10-year note makes 20 semiannual interest payments over its full term, followed by repayment of the principal at maturity.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The coupon rate is fixed when the note is auctioned. Each interest payment is based on the note’s face value, not necessarily the price you pay in the market. For example, a hypothetical $1,000 note with a 4% annual coupon would pay $20 every six months, because 4% of $1,000 is $40 per year. The actual coupon depends on the specific auction or issue you buy.

TreasuryDirect describes them as backed by the government’s full faith and credit, meaning the issuer commits to paying scheduled interest and principal. | Route | What you can do | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| TreasuryDirect auction | Submit a noncompetitive bid for a new issue or reopening and accept the auction-determined yield. | Simple access to the auction, but newly purchased marketable securities generally cannot be transferred or sold for 45 calendar days. |
| Bank, broker, or dealer auction order | Submit a noncompetitive bid or a competitive bid specifying the minimum yield you will accept. | Competitive bids can be partially filled or rejected; account rules and fees vary by provider. |
| Secondary market | Buy an already-issued note at the prevailing market price, or sell a note before maturity. | The price may be above or below face value, and a sale before maturity can produce a loss. |
Use the first route when you want a straightforward auction purchase and do not expect to move the security immediately. A bank, broker, or dealer is necessary for a competitive bid and may be more convenient if you already hold investments there. The secondary market is the route when you need a specific maturity date or want to buy after the original auction.
Check the issue and auction calendar
Ten-year notes are normally issued in original auctions in February, May, August, and November. Treasury also schedules reopenings. Check the current Treasury auction calendar and the offering announcement for the exact auction date, settlement date, maturity date, coupon, CUSIP, minimums, and bidding deadlines. Dates, prices, yields, and CUSIPs change, so an old calendar or a quoted historical yield is not a current offer.
Original issue versus reopening
An original issue starts a new 10-year security. A reopening sells additional amounts of an existing note. A reopening has the same CUSIP, maturity date, coupon, and regular coupon-payment dates as the original issue, but its issue date and usually its price differ. Because the reopening occurs later, its remaining time to maturity is shorter than 10 years even though it is commonly called a 10-year note.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA reopening can include accrued interest in the amount you pay. That accrued amount compensates the seller or Treasury for interest that has accumulated since the last coupon date. It is returned to the holder as part of the first regular interest payment, so compare the total settlement amount—not only the quoted clean price—when reviewing an order.

- Identify the auction. Find the 10-year note or reopening on Treasury’s current auction calendar. Confirm the announcement’s auction date, issue date, maturity date, and payment terms.
- Choose the purchase amount. Treasury’s current overview lists a $100 minimum purchase and $100 purchase increments. Confirm the applicable limit on the order screen; Treasury lists a $10 million maximum for a noncompetitive bid.
- Select a noncompetitive bid. Enter the amount you want to buy. You agree to accept the yield determined by the auction rather than naming your own yield.
- Review the funding and settlement details. Check the amount that will be withdrawn or otherwise used for settlement and verify the issue. For a reopening, look for any accrued-interest amount shown in the transaction details.
- Submit before the deadline. An order received after the announced cutoff will not participate in that auction. Keep the confirmation for your records.
- Check the result and holding. Treasury posts the auction result and the amount issued. Once issued, the note pays interest every six months and returns principal at maturity unless you later sell or transfer it.
A noncompetitive bid is designed to receive the amount requested, within the applicable bid limit, as long as the order is valid. You do not know the final yield or price when you submit the bid; those are set by the auction.
The 45-day TreasuryDirect restriction
TreasuryDirect states that a newly purchased marketable security generally must be held for at least 45 calendar days before it can be transferred or sold. The restriction does not apply when the purchase uses proceeds from reinvesting a maturing security. This is an operational rule, separate from market risk: after the hold ends, the note can still be worth less than you paid if market yields have risen.

A bank, broker, or dealer can submit either type of auction bid and can generally provide secondary-market access. Confirm that the account is eligible for Treasury auctions, whether the provider accepts noncompetitive and competitive bids, the order cutoff, and any commissions, markups, or other charges.
- Locate the specific issue. Use the provider’s Treasury auction listing or enter the issue details from Treasury’s offering announcement.
- Choose the bid type. A noncompetitive order accepts the auction’s final yield. A competitive order states the yield you will accept.
- Enter the face amount and review settlement. Use the provider’s stated increments and check whether the order is for an original issue or reopening. Review any accrued interest or transaction charge.
- Submit by the provider’s deadline. Broker deadlines can be earlier than Treasury’s public deadline so the firm has time to process the order.
- Read the allocation notice. The notice should show the amount awarded, price, yield, coupon, and settlement amount. Keep it with your account records.
What a competitive bid means
With a competitive bid, you specify the highest yield (or equivalent price terms) you are willing to accept. If the auction clears at a yield better than your limit, you may receive the requested amount. If your bid is near the cutoff, it may be partially filled. If the auction yield does not meet your terms, you may receive nothing. Competitive bidding therefore gives you control over the acceptable yield but removes the certainty that the order will be filled.
Buying a note in the secondary market
Secondary-market trading lets you buy a note after its original auction or sell one before maturity. The quote normally reflects the note’s market price and yield, along with the remaining time to maturity. Ask the provider whether its displayed price is a clean price or includes accrued interest, and review the total settlement amount before confirming.

A note trading below its face value can offer a yield to maturity above its coupon rate. A note trading above face value can offer a yield below its coupon rate. The relationship is mechanical: the fixed coupon payments and principal are discounted at the market-required return. When market yields rise, existing fixed-coupon notes generally fall in price; when yields fall, their prices generally rise.
Secondary-market liquidity does not guarantee a particular price. The amount available, bid-ask spread, market conditions, and the provider’s inventory affect what you can buy or receive when selling.
Coupon, price, and yield are different numbers
Coupon rate
The coupon is the fixed annual interest rate applied to the note’s face value. It determines the dollar amount of each semiannual payment. A coupon does not change because the note later trades at a premium or discount.
Price
Price is what you pay for the note, expressed in relation to its face value or as a dollar settlement amount. At auction, Treasury determines the price from competitive bidding. In the secondary market, the price moves with interest rates, expectations, demand, and the time remaining to maturity.
Yield to maturity
Yield to maturity estimates the annualized return if you buy at the stated price, receive all scheduled payments, and hold until maturity, subject to the calculation’s conventions. It incorporates the coupon, purchase price, timing of cash flows, and repayment of face value. It is not the same as the coupon.

| Market relationship | Typical implication |
|---|---|
| Yield to maturity higher than coupon | Price is below par (a discount). |
| Yield to maturity lower than coupon | Price is above par (a premium). |
| Yield to maturity equal to coupon | Price is approximately par, before accrued interest and transaction effects. |
At an auction, avoid treating a previous auction’s yield as an available rate. The current auction result or current secondary-market quote is the relevant figure for a new order.
What happens while you hold the note
You receive a fixed interest payment every six months on the scheduled coupon dates. The principal remains a nominal amount and is returned at maturity if you continue to hold the note. Your account statement may show a market value before maturity, but that value is an estimate of what the note could fetch in the market—not an alteration of the maturity payment.
At maturity, you can take the principal as cash or follow the available reinvestment instructions. If you reinvest coupon payments, the future rate is unknown today. The note’s payment schedule is fixed, but the return on any reinvested interest depends on rates available when each payment arrives.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Main risks of a 10-year Treasury note
Interest-rate and market-price risk
The fixed coupon becomes more or less attractive as new market yields change. If yields rise after you buy, newer securities offer more competitive income and your note’s market price generally declines. If you must sell before maturity, you could receive less than you paid or less than face value. If you hold to maturity and the issuer makes the scheduled payments, the price fluctuation before maturity does not change the stated principal repayment.
Inflation risk
Interest and principal on a conventional Treasury note are nominal amounts. If consumer prices rise faster than your note’s return, those dollars buy less in the future. A 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Security (TIPS) is a different Treasury instrument whose principal adjusts with inflation or deflation. Its interest payment can therefore change as adjusted principal changes. TIPS still have market-price risk, and their principal can adjust downward as well as upward over the term; they do not eliminate every investment risk.

| Feature | Conventional 10-year note | 10-year TIPS |
|---|---|---|
| Principal | Fixed nominal principal, repaid at maturity. | Adjusted for inflation or deflation; the adjusted amount determines interest and maturity value. |
| Interest dollars | Fixed semiannual dollar payments based on face value. | Payments can vary as adjusted principal changes. |
| Pricing | Market price and yield are nominal and move with interest rates. | Market price also moves; inflation-linked terms affect the quoted economics. |
| Best question to ask | Can I accept fixed nominal payments and hold through maturity? | Do I need some protection against changes in purchasing power and accept variable adjusted payments? |
Reinvestment risk
The note’s six-month payments arrive on a known schedule, but the rate available when you reinvest them is not known. If rates are lower at that time, reinvested interest may earn less than the note’s original yield. The same issue applies when the principal matures and you decide to buy another security.
Liquidity and access risk
Although marketable notes can be sold, a TreasuryDirect purchase is generally subject to the 45-calendar-day hold described above. Someone who may need the money shortly after purchase should account for that restriction and for the possibility that the sale price is below the purchase price. A secondary-market account may permit faster trading, but speed does not guarantee a favorable price.
Auction allocation risk
Noncompetitive bidding is intended to deliver the requested amount within the limit, at the auction-determined yield. Competitive bidding can result in a full allocation, a partial allocation, or no allocation. A competitive bidder should be prepared for the possibility that the desired issue is not received.
Tax considerations
Treasury’s note overview states that interest is subject to federal tax each year and exempt from state and local income taxes. Tax treatment can depend on your circumstances and jurisdiction, so treat this as general information rather than an individualized tax determination. Keep purchase confirmations, interest records, and sale statements for your tax preparer.
Credit risk versus other risks
The full-faith-and-credit backing addresses the issuer’s payment commitment; it does not make a 10-year note risk-free. Market price, inflation, reinvestment, liquidity, and auction-allocation risks remain relevant even when the scheduled payment obligation is the central reason you chose the security.
Protect yourself from fraudulent “private Treasury” offers
Marketable Treasury securities are sold through public auctions and recognized financial channels. The Treasury Office of Inspector General states: “We do not issue securities through private placements, nor do we license financial entities or individuals to act as intermediaries to sell marketable Treasury securities.” Be cautious if someone claims to offer a secret, private, or specially licensed Treasury note outside TreasuryDirect, a bank, broker, or dealer. Verify the security, account, settlement instructions, and official auction information before sending money.
How to decide whether a 10-year note fits
- Match the maturity to your cash need. If you need the money on a known date, choose a note whose maturity and payment schedule fit that date, or keep a cash reserve outside the note.
- Decide whether nominal certainty is enough. A conventional note fixes dollar payments but not purchasing power. Consider whether inflation protection is more important than fixed nominal cash flows.
- Choose your bid type deliberately. Use noncompetitive bidding when receiving the issue matters more than setting a minimum yield. Use competitive bidding only when you understand that the order may be partially filled or rejected.
- Compare total settlement cost. Include the purchase price, accrued interest on a reopening or secondary-market trade, and any provider charge or markup.
- Plan for the coupon payments. Decide in advance whether semiannual interest will be spent, held as cash, or reinvested at whatever rates are then available.
- Keep a sale scenario in view. If an emergency could force a sale, understand both the TreasuryDirect holding restriction and the possibility of a market loss.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm that the security is a 10-year original issue or a reopening and note its exact maturity date.
- Check the live auction calendar and offering announcement, not an old rate quote.
- Verify the $100 minimum and $100 increments, plus the current noncompetitive bid limit.
- Select TreasuryDirect or a bank, broker, or dealer based on your need for competitive bidding, secondary-market access, and transfer flexibility.
- For a competitive order, write down the maximum yield you will accept and accept that the allocation may be partial or zero.
- Review the coupon, price, yield, settlement amount, and any accrued interest before submitting.
- Mark the coupon dates, maturity date, and the earliest date a TreasuryDirect purchase can generally be transferred or sold.
- Record the federal-tax treatment and retain all confirmations.
Questions to ask before placing the order
- Am I buying at auction or in the secondary market?
- Is the security an original issue or a reopening with a shorter remaining term?
- Am I accepting the auction yield, or am I setting a competitive limit?
- What total amount will settle, including accrued interest and provider charges?
- Could I need this money during the TreasuryDirect hold period or before maturity?
- Would a nominal fixed payment meet my goal, or is inflation adjustment more important?
Bottom line
A 10-year Treasury note is straightforward to purchase but not risk-free. Use TreasuryDirect for a noncompetitive auction bid, a bank, broker, or dealer for competitive bidding and broader trading access, or the secondary market for an already-issued note. Understand that the coupon is not the yield, a reopening may have less than 10 years left, TreasuryDirect generally imposes a 45-day hold, and an early sale can lose money. The right choice depends on whether you can hold through maturity, how you view inflation, and how much access to your money you need.
