There is no single safe “burn crypto” procedure for every coin. The method depends on the asset, network and token contract: a protocol may burn tokens automatically, a token contract may let an authorized holder destroy them, or tokens may be sent to an address that is genuinely unspendable on that network. Before signing anything, identify the exact asset and chain. Sending funds to a random address can lose them without reducing the token’s supply.
What does it mean to burn crypto?
Burning is a supply operation: tokens are permanently removed from circulation, either by contract logic that reduces the reported supply or by sending them to an address designed to be unspendable. It is not a physical action, and the mechanics differ by network and asset. Ethereum’s glossary describes both approaches.
Which kind of burn applies to your crypto?
| Method | Who initiates it | What happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Protocol burn | The network’s protocol, automatically under its rules. | A protocol-defined amount is destroyed; the holder does not invoke a token burn function. | Confirm the asset and network’s documented mechanism. For Ethereum, the base fee is burned as part of transactions under EIP-1559. |
| Token-contract burn | A holder or other authorized party, if the contract permits it. | Contract logic may reduce token supply. Availability and permissions depend on the particular contract. | Consult the project’s official documentation and verify the contract and supported function on the correct network. |
| Unspendable-address transfer | The holder sends tokens to a destination meant to have no usable private key. | The tokens are intended to become inaccessible; this is not necessarily the same as contract logic reducing total supply. | Establish that the destination is truly unspendable for that asset on that network. There is no universal address established for all crypto. |
Protocol burn: Ethereum’s base fee
On Ethereum, EIP-1559 burns the base fee for each transaction. The priority fee is separate and goes to the block producer. This happens through protocol rules; a user does not need to send ETH to a special address to make the base-fee burn occur. EIP-1559 states: “The base fee is always burned (i.e. it is destroyed by the protocol).”
Fee burning went live with Ethereum’s London upgrade in August 2021. That date explains when the mechanism was introduced; it is not a current burn-rate figure. Ethereum’s Merge documentation discusses issuance in a historical context, so approximate rates tied to staking conditions at the time should not be treated as present-day figures.

Token-contract burn: check permissions first
Some token contracts provide burn functions; others do not, and a function may be restricted to particular accounts. For example, the ERC-777 standard defines burn methods while allowing contracts to prevent holders from using them. ERC-20 implementations likewise have their own business logic. ERC-777 and ERC-20 describe standards, not a guarantee that a specific token lets you burn your balance.
Use the project’s official documentation to find the supported method, then verify that the contract address and network match the token you hold. Do not assume a function seen in a guide, wallet, or unrelated contract applies to your asset.

Unspendable address: no universal destination
A transfer only serves as a burn if the destination is actually unspendable on the relevant network. Ethereum’s glossary recognizes the approach, and proof-of-burn research describes generating a burn address in the context of a particular protocol. Neither establishes one address that is safe to reuse for every coin or chain. Do not copy an address from an unrelated token or network.
How to approach a burn safely
Because the asset and network are unspecified, there is no universal wallet path or exact sequence of buttons. First identify whether the intended burn is protocol-driven, a contract function, or an address transfer. For any holder-initiated transaction:

- Identify the asset and network. Confirm the token’s exact identity and the chain on which it is held; similarly named assets can exist on different networks.
- Find the supported method. Use the project’s official documentation and verify the actual contract’s function and permissions, or establish that a proposed address is unspendable for this asset and network.
- Review the transaction in your wallet. Check the network, asset or contract, destination, amount, and action before signing. Do not approve a transaction you cannot understand.
- Wait for confirmation and verify the result. Transactions are broadcast, included in a block, and progress toward finality. Check the transaction details on the relevant network’s explorer and verify the expected contract or balance change. Ethereum’s transaction documentation explains transaction data and this lifecycle.
Ethereum transactions can contain data that is difficult to interpret, which creates blind-signing risk. A wallet prompt alone is not proof that an action is a legitimate burn. Ethereum also documents a scam-token technique that moves holder balances to an address; that is distinct from a standard burn that reduces total supply. Ethereum’s scam guidance explains the distinction.

No. A burn does not guarantee a price increase: price depends on more than supply, and a smaller supply does not establish higher demand. Nor does a burn necessarily mean total supply is falling. For ETH, net supply change depends on issuance relative to the amount burned; EIP-1559’s burn mechanism alone does not fix the long-run quantity. The EIP-1559 proposal describes that limitation.
