Build your tax compliance calendar around your entity’s actual obligations—not a generic list of dates. Start by recording its registrations, tax year, GST filing scheme, TDS responsibilities and audit status; then create a separate, owned calendar entry for each payment, return, statement and report. For FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27, some audit-category income-tax dates have been extended, while GST dates depend on filing frequency and taxpayer-specific portal information. Check current official notices and the relevant portal before acting on any date.
Why a tax calendar must be specific to the taxpayer
Indian tax deadlines depend on who is filing, what obligation applies, which period is covered, and whether an official extension changes the normal date. A company, a salaried individual, a person covered by a tax audit and a GST-registered business may have very different calendars. Even within one business, GST, TDS, advance tax, audit reporting and income-tax return filing are separate obligations with distinct triggers and dates.

Use a calendar as a control system, not just a list of statutory deadlines. It should make clear who prepares each filing, who reviews it, when payment must be authorized, what evidence proves completion and where the current due date was confirmed. The Income Tax Department and GST Portal publish procedural dates and updates; the portal or notice applicable to the taxpayer takes precedence over a date copied into an old spreadsheet.

Before entering dates, assemble a short compliance profile. One group may have several legal entities, PANs or GST registrations, so do not assume a date or filing choice applies across all of them.

- Entity and income-tax details: legal form, PAN, tax year, income-tax return category, and whether the entity is subject to tax audit or transfer-pricing reporting.
- GST details: each GSTIN, state or principal place of business, registration status, applicable scheme, and whether the GSTIN files monthly or under the Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme.
- TDS and TCS responsibilities: whether the entity deducts or collects tax, the relevant provisions and transaction types, and who handles payment, statements and certificates.
- People and process: preparer, reviewer, payment approver, backup owner, accounting-system close date and the person responsible for checking official updates.
Map applicability at the level where it is determined. For example, the GST Portal says that eligible taxpayers with multiple registrations on one PAN can select QRMP for each GSTIN; do not automatically treat one registration’s choice as applying to the others. Confirm current portal rules before changing a filing frequency.
2. Make one calendar row for every obligation and period
A single row labelled “GST due” or “tax filing” hides important work. Separate payment from reporting and create distinct entries for obligations that happen at different times, even if they concern the same month or quarter.
| Calendar field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Entity / registration | Legal entity, PAN, GSTIN and state or principal place of business | Identifies the taxpayer and registration to which the task belongs. |
| Tax year and period | FY / AY or Tax Year; GST month or quarter; TDS quarter | Prevents a date for one reporting period being assigned to another. |
| Obligation and trigger | Payment, return, statement, certificate, audit report or reconciliation; applicable section, turnover, scheme or audit condition | Shows what must be done and why it applies. |
| Form and portal | Current form name and official payment or filing portal | Gives the preparer a clear route to completion; recheck forms when tax-year rules change. |
| Owner and reviewer | Preparer, approver and backup | Assigns responsibility and avoids a task depending on one unavailable person. |
| Internal target | Team deadline for data, reconciliation, review and submission | Creates working time before the statutory date. This is an operational target, not a government deadline. |
| Statutory date and source check | Current due date, any qualifying extension, official source, date checked and notice reference | Preserves why a deadline is in the calendar and when it was last verified. |
| Evidence and status | Challan, acknowledgement, return reference or audit-report acknowledgement; status such as in preparation, reviewed, paid, filed, accepted or escalated | Shows whether the obligation is actually complete and supports later follow-up. |
Do not overwrite the original deadline when an extension is announced. Record the original date, revised date, issuing notice and date the calendar was updated. That preserves an audit trail and makes it possible to tell which deadline the team relied on.

3. Set internal deadlines that leave room to complete the work
Official due dates do not provide a universal timetable for collecting data, reconciling accounts, resolving exceptions, approving payment and submitting a return. Set internal targets that fit the business’s close and review process; label them clearly as internal policy, not statutory requirements.
- Work backwards from the verified statutory date. Reserve time for final review and portal submission rather than scheduling the first data request on the due date.
- Set upstream milestones. Give transaction owners a data deadline, the preparer a reconciliation deadline, the reviewer a review window and the payment approver a separate authorization date.
- Allow for exceptions. Build time to resolve mismatches, missing invoices, incorrect tax classifications, insufficient payment authorization or portal issues.
- Assign a backup and escalation path. Specify who takes over if the owner is absent and who must be told when a milestone is at risk.
- Close the task with evidence. Mark a filing complete only after the relevant payment or submission evidence has been saved and checked.
4. Add income-tax returns and audit reporting by category
Income-tax return dates are category-specific. The Income Tax Department’s examples for FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27 illustrate dates of 31 July 2026 for a salaried individual with no other income, 31 August 2026 for certain presumptive non-audit examples, 31 October 2026 for a company or person in the stated audit category, and 30 November 2026 for the stated company required to furnish a section 92E report. These examples are not a universal due-date list: first determine the taxpayer’s category and then check the current department calendar and applicable notices.
For the specified audit category in AY 2026–27
CBDT announced on 29 September 2026 that the income-tax return date for persons in the specified audit category was extended from 31 October 2026 to 21 November 2026. The related audit-report “specified date” was extended from 30 September 2026 to 21 October 2026. Apply these revised dates only if the taxpayer falls within the category covered by the announcement, and verify the formal order and current department updates before relying on them.

Enter the audit report and income-tax return as two separate tasks. The audit report has its own preparation, review and submission workflow; filing it does not itself file the return. Record the relevant report deadline, owner, reviewer and acknowledgement independently from the return entry.
Keep the two audit form regimes distinct
For FY 2025–26 / AY 2026–27, the Income Tax Department’s forms FAQ says that persons audited under another law use Form 3CA, other cases use Form 3CB, and Form 3CD contains the particulars required under section 44AB. The same FAQ describes a different process for Tax Year 2026–27: Form 26 under the Income-tax Rules, 2026 merges the prior forms, with an audit-report due date of 30 September 2027. Do not carry the AY 2026–27 form workflow into a Tax Year 2026–27 calendar without checking the applicable rules and current instructions.
5. Separate TDS payment, statements and special transaction reporting
TDS remittance and TDS statement filing are different calendar entries. For an ordinary deductor, the Income Tax Department says tax deducted is generally payable within seven days after the end of the month of deduction, with a different rule for amounts credited or paid in March. Check the rule that applies to the deduction and taxpayer rather than treating the general timing as universal.

Specified transactions can have their own challan-cum-statement obligations. The department identifies sections 194-IA, 194-IB, 194M and 194S among the provisions with such requirements, generally within 30 days from month-end. Verify the applicable provision and transaction circumstances, then create a separate entry with the exact form, payment/reporting action and deadline.
Quarterly TDS statements
| TDS statement quarter ends | Department-listed statement due date |
|---|---|
| 30 June | 31 July |
| 30 September | 31 October |
| 31 December | 31 January |
| 31 March | 31 May of the following financial year |
Keep the statement entries separate from monthly remittance entries so that paying tax is not mistaken for filing the quarterly statement. The Income Tax Department notes a six-year period for TDS correction statements from 1 April 2025. A calendar may include periodic correction monitoring as an internal control, but that correction period is not the original statement filing deadline.
6. Add advance-tax instalments only where applicable
Advance tax should be a conditional calendar item, not a date automatically assigned to every taxpayer. The Income Tax Department’s limitation-period page lists instalments for specified taxpayers, including at least 15% by 15 June and at least 45% by 15 September. It also lists further instalments and a separate schedule for eligible presumptive taxpayers. Determine which rules apply to the entity and tax year, then record only the relevant instalments and amounts in the calendar. Verify the current official schedule before each tax year rather than assuming one taxpayer’s pattern applies to another.

7. Set up GST entries for the chosen filing frequency
GST return frequency changes both the reporting rhythm and the work pattern. The GST Portal says GSTR-1 is generally due on the 11th of the succeeding month for monthly filers and on the 13th after a quarter for quarterly filers, subject to government extensions. GSTR-1 is required even for a nil tax period, so a nil period should be a filing task rather than an empty calendar month.
Monthly filing and QRMP compared
| Calendar consideration | Monthly filing | QRMP |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Confirm the GSTIN’s applicable filing status on the portal. | The GST Portal describes eligibility up to ₹5 crore aggregate annual turnover, subject to conditions including filing the last due GSTR-3B. Confirm current eligibility and portal rules. |
| GSTR-1 frequency | Generally monthly; due on the 11th of the succeeding month, subject to extensions. | Quarterly; generally due on the 13th after the quarter, subject to extensions. |
| GSTR-3B / tax payment rhythm | Use the live return dashboard for the applicable return due date and payment workflow. | Returns are quarterly while tax is paid monthly through a challan. |
| Quarterly GSTR-3B date | Not applicable to monthly filing. | The GST Portal advisory gives the 22nd or 24th of the month after the quarter according to the principal place of business; check updated notifications. |
| Operational workload | More frequent return-cycle close and review. | Quarterly return work with monthly tax-payment tasks; plan both cadences and the quarter-end reconciliation. |
| Multiple registrations | Record each GSTIN’s chosen frequency independently. | Eligible taxpayers can select QRMP per GSTIN where they have multiple registrations on one PAN; confirm the current portal rules. |
Do not hard-code one monthly GSTR-3B date for every GSTIN. The GST Portal guide says the returns dashboard displays the due date applicable to the taxpayer’s return. Check that dashboard and relevant official notices when preparing each cycle. QRMP dates and the general GSTR-1 dates can also be affected by government extensions, so store the date checked and any notice that changed it.
8. Keep the calendar current through each filing cycle
A due date in a calendar is a verified point-in-time entry, not a guarantee that the date will remain unchanged. The reviewed official pages were checked on 9 October 2026; subsequent notices or taxpayer-specific portal information may alter what applies. Use a recurring review process:
- Before each filing cycle, check the official department calendar, circulars or notifications, and the relevant GST or income-tax portal dashboard.
- Compare the live date with the saved entry. Confirm the taxpayer category, period, form and condition match; do not rely on an old spreadsheet entry alone.
- Log any change. Record the issuing notice, revised date, date checked and person who updated the calendar, while retaining the earlier date.
- After filing or payment, save the challan, acknowledgement or reference number and update the status. Escalate rejections, portal errors and unresolved exceptions rather than marking them complete.
- At tax-year changeover, review form names, tax-year terminology, filing categories and audit applicability before copying recurring tasks into a new calendar.
Common calendar failures to prevent
- One deadline for everyone: replace generic dates with taxpayer-category and period-specific entries.
- Payment treated as filing: keep remittance, return, statement and audit-report tasks separate when each has a distinct action or deadline.
- Old date retained after an extension: preserve the original date and record the revised date with its official basis.
- GST frequency copied across registrations: verify the status and QRMP choice for each GSTIN.
- Nil period omitted: schedule GSTR-1 even when there is no tax-period activity requiring a non-nil filing.
- Audit report merged into the return task: track the report and return independently, including their separate dates and acknowledgements.
- Calendar marked complete without proof: attach the challan, filing reference or report acknowledgement before closing the task.
Using software or professional support
If you use compliance software or engage a qualified tax professional, assess the fit against your actual workflow: entity and return types supported, current-year form support, how deadline updates are handled, reconciliation functions, reviewer controls and the provider’s qualifications. Confirm who remains responsible for checking notices and taxpayer-specific portal dates, and agree how filing evidence and exceptions will be shared. A tool or service can help organize work, but the calendar still needs an accountable owner and a documented source check.
