A clean, targeted resume can make your application easier for recruiting software and human reviewers to read, but no template or “ATS score” guarantees an interview at Deloitte, PwC, EY, or KPMG. The reliable approach is to use a text-readable, reverse-chronological resume; mirror relevant language from the exact job posting; prove your skills with measurable achievements; and follow the firm’s file and application instructions.
What “ATS-friendly” really means
An applicant tracking system (ATS) is recruiting software that can store, search, and organize applications. Large employers commonly use recruiting technology, but the exact platforms, parsing rules, screening criteria, and review process can differ by firm, country, service line, and application channel. The U.S. Department of Labor advises candidates to use job-relevant keywords and the correct file format because many employers use ATS software: U.S. Department of Labor resume guide.

An ATS-friendly resume is therefore:
- Text-based and machine-readable.
- Organized in a predictable reading order.
- Built with standard section headings and recognizable dates.
- Tailored to the specific role without exaggerating your qualifications.
- Easy for a recruiter to scan after parsing.
It is not a resume designed to “beat the bots.” A readable file cannot compensate for missing qualifications, weak evidence, poor judgment, or a mismatch with the target service line. Big Four recruiters still need to see communication, teamwork, client service, technical ability, commercial awareness, and results.
Start with the exact Big Four role
Do not create one generic resume for every Big Four application. An audit resume should not be identical to one for technology consulting, tax, deals, risk, or advisory. Before editing your resume, record:

- Job ID and application deadline, if listed.
- Required degree, graduation date, GPA, certification, or work authorization.
- Travel, location, language, or industry requirements.
Then divide the posting into two lists.
Required or likely screening criteria
- Degree, major, or graduation date.
- Relevant experience.
- Technical skills or software.
- CPA eligibility, exam progress, or another required credential.
- Work authorization and location requirements.
Preferred qualifications
- Industry knowledge.
- Client-facing experience.
- Leadership.
- Additional certifications or languages.
- Specific platforms such as Power BI, SAP, Alteryx, Tableau, or Workday.
Highlight repeated, legitimate terminology such as financial reporting, internal controls, risk assessment, tax research, data analytics, financial analysis, stakeholder management, client service, Microsoft Excel, Power BI, SQL, or financial modeling. Use relevant terms naturally in your summary, experience bullets, projects, and skills section. Do not paste a keyword list into the bottom of the resume.
Use the safest resume format
For most Big Four applicants, the safest default is a single-column, reverse-chronological resume. It shows employers, job titles, dates, and progression in the order recruiters expect and is easier to parse than a heavily designed layout. Deloitte identifies chronological resumes as the most common format preferred by recruiters and employers in its resume best-practices guidance.
Recommended design
- One column and left-aligned text.
- Conventional headings such as Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications, Projects, and Leadership.
- Readable fonts such as Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Georgia, or Times New Roman.
- Consistent dates, for example
May 2024 – August 2024. - Normal bullet characters and consistent indentation.
- Clear hierarchy, adequate white space, and restrained bold formatting.
Avoid
- Tables used to create columns.
- Text boxes, graphics, logos, icons, headshots, charts, and skill bars.
- Headers or footers containing essential contact details.
- Decorative fonts and unusual symbols.
- Multiple columns and infographic layouts.
- Scanned, image-only, or password-protected files.
Deloitte specifically recommends bullets, clean formatting, fewer formatting elements, and conventional fonts: Deloitte resume advice.

Choose one page or two
Students and recent graduates
Use one page whenever possible, especially for internships, campus recruiting, and entry-level roles. Deloitte’s U.S. guidance recommends a one-page student resume and suggests emphasizing internships, leadership, volunteer work, school projects, and academic performance where relevant.
A useful order is:
- Name and contact details.
- Education.
- Relevant experience.
- Leadership, activities, or projects.
- Skills and certifications.
Experienced professionals
A second page is justified when you have directly relevant professional experience, major engagements, certifications, technical capabilities, or leadership evidence. Do not force substantial experience onto one page at the expense of readability. Deloitte’s experienced-candidate guidance says resumes should generally remain below two pages: Deloitte guidance for experienced candidates.
More than two pages should be reserved for senior candidates with enough directly relevant evidence to justify the length.

Build a master resume first
Keep a private, editable master resume containing every relevant achievement, role, project, tool, credential, leadership activity, and approved metric. Then duplicate it for each application. This prevents you from rewriting from scratch and reduces the risk of deleting useful information.
Your master document can include:
- All relevant positions and responsibilities.
- Engagement or project types and industries.
- Technical systems and software.
- Certifications and exam progress.
- Leadership, volunteer work, research, and academic projects.
- Metrics such as clients, accounts, controls, budgets, transactions, time saved, or error reduction.
Keep the master file separate from each submitted version. Save the final resume with the firm, role, and date if you are managing several applications.
Write each section for the target role
Contact details
Use your name, city and state or country, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn URL if it is current. Put this information in the main document body rather than a header or footer so it remains selectable text.
For U.S. applications, do not include a photograph, age, marital status, national identification number, or other unnecessary personal information. State work authorization only when relevant and accurately.

Summary or headline
A summary is optional. Include one when it quickly clarifies your level, target function, and strongest evidence.
Weak: Hardworking individual seeking a challenging opportunity at a leading company.
Stronger: Accounting graduate with audit-internship experience supporting control testing, account reconciliations, and Excel-based financial analysis; pursuing an entry-level assurance role in Chicago.
A good summary can include your professional level, target function, two or three relevant capabilities, a credential or result, and a useful geography or industry. Avoid claims such as “guaranteed to pass ATS,” “perfect Big Four candidate,” or “expert” unless your evidence supports them.
Education
Students and early-career candidates should usually include the degree, major, university, and graduation month and year. Add a strong GPA, relevant coursework, honors, scholarships, CPA eligibility, or exam progress when useful or requested.
Deloitte’s U.S. advice suggests including GPA when it is above 3.2. Treat that as Deloitte-specific guidance, not a universal Big Four cutoff.
Experience, projects, and leadership
Use paid work, internships, coursework, case competitions, student organizations, volunteer leadership, research, tutoring, part-time jobs, and athletics when they demonstrate relevant skills. A student does not need a previous Big Four internship to show analysis, teamwork, ownership, or client service.
For each position, show the employer, official title, location if useful, and dates. Do not replace an official job title with a more senior one. If clarification helps, preserve the title and add a truthful descriptor, such as Operations Specialist — Financial Reporting Support.
Skills and certifications
Include a dedicated skills section, but support important skills elsewhere with evidence. Relevant examples include:
- Accounting and audit: GAAP or IFRS where applicable, financial statement analysis, account reconciliations, internal controls, SOX, substantive testing, audit documentation, risk assessment, tax preparation, and financial reporting.
- Consulting and advisory: requirements gathering, process improvement, data analysis, market research, financial modeling, presentation development, stakeholder management, change management, and project management.
- Technology and analytics: Excel functions or modeling, Power BI, Tableau, SQL, Python, Alteryx, SAP, Oracle, Workday, Salesforce, or cloud platforms.
Do not use visual ratings such as five colored bars. Plain language and credible examples are more useful.
Turn duties into verifiable achievements
Use this structure:
Action verb + task or method + scope + measurable result.

Weak: Assisted with audits and prepared reports.
Better: Supported testing of 35+ control activities across three client processes and summarized exceptions for senior reviewers.

Useful metrics include the number of clients, accounts, controls, reconciliations, reports, dashboards, transactions, team members, or business units; dollar values or budget ranges; percentage improvements; time saved; error reduction; and deadlines met.
Do not invent figures or disclose restricted client information. If appropriate, use accurate ranges such as “analyzed a six-figure operating budget.” For confidential work, describe the organization generically, for example “regional banking client,” “public-sector client,” or “multinational manufacturing company.”
Examples by Big Four track
Audit: Tested 40+ account reconciliations and documented exceptions for senior review, helping complete fieldwork before the reporting deadline.
Tax: Researched state tax guidance and summarized findings in a comparison memo used to support preparation of 12 client returns.
Consulting: Interviewed 15 stakeholders, mapped the order-to-cash process, and identified three workflow changes that reduced handoff delays.
Data and technology: Used SQL and Power BI to consolidate 25,000 transaction records into a dashboard for exception monitoring.
Campus leadership: Led a six-person student consulting team, assigned weekly deliverables, and presented recommendations to a nonprofit executive committee.

Tailor one resume to one posting
Use this workflow:
- Save the job posting as a PDF or copy its text into a working document.
- Highlight required qualifications, preferred qualifications, repeated skills, job title, level, industry, and client-facing language.
- Open your master resume and select only relevant experience.
- Rewrite the headline or summary for the role.
- Adjust the skills section to reflect truthful matches.
- Rewrite the first two or three bullets under each relevant position.
- Add scope, tools, methods, and measurable outcomes.
- Check that every major keyword is supported by evidence.
- Remove unrelated content and save the targeted version separately.
Do not hide keywords in white text, add invisible blocks, repeat terms unnaturally, or claim proficiency you do not have. Keyword matching is most useful when it helps a recruiter find real evidence quickly.

PDF or DOCX: which should you submit?
Follow the job posting and application portal first. There is no universal rule that every Big Four application should use PDF.
- PDF: Preserves visible formatting and is useful when the employer requests it. PwC’s U.S. student recruiting guidance specifically recommends submitting a PDF and including “Resume” in the filename.
- DOCX: May be easier for some systems or recruiters to parse, edit, or annotate and may be required by a particular application.
If no format is specified, use a text-based PDF when formatting preservation matters and keep a DOCX backup. Deloitte says its systems accept standard formats including PDF and DOCX, while some image and compressed files may not be analyzable by its recruiter search tool: Deloitte application FAQ.

Test what the parser can read
Before uploading:
- Export the final file.
- Select all text and paste it into a plain-text editor.
- Confirm that the reading order is logical.
- Check that dates remain attached to the correct employer and role.
- Confirm that contact details appear as text.
- Check for empty squares, garbled bullets, missing characters, or broken symbols.
- Search the file for important skills and credentials.
- Open it on desktop and mobile.
- Compare the exported file with the intended version.
A third-party ATS checker can flag formatting problems or compare terms with a job description, but it is not the employer’s ATS. Its score is a directional diagnostic, not an official Deloitte, PwC, EY, or KPMG threshold.
Firm-specific application checks
The Big Four are separate employers. Their instructions and recruiting workflows are not interchangeable.
| Firm | What to check |
|---|---|
| Deloitte | Tailoring, clean formatting, bullets, and relevant keywords are emphasized. Deloitte says applications are reviewed against the requirements of the relevant position, accepts standard formats such as PDF and DOCX, and warns against sending resumes through its general contact route. |
| PwC | For the cited U.S. student process, submit a current PDF resume and include “Resume” in the filename. A cover letter is not required for that pathway, but another role or geography may differ. Recruiting can be rolling until positions are filled. |
| EY | Check the specific open role and location. EY says candidates applying to more than one position or location may need a separate application, and interview style can vary by service line. |
| KPMG | Program requirements vary by candidate group. KPMG’s early-career materials cover accounting, consulting, technology, and other tracks; some applications may request a resume and, in certain circumstances, an unofficial transcript. |
Review the current instructions on the relevant official pages: Deloitte, PwC, EY, EY early-career guidance, and KPMG early-career programs.
Complete the application accurately
Your resume does not replace the application form. Firms may ask you to re-enter education, employment history, location, eligibility, work authorization, or screening answers. Use the same accurate dates and titles unless the form specifically requires a different format.
Apply through the firm’s job-search system and the exact opportunity. Deloitte warns that sending a resume through its general “Contact us” route can delay routing. PwC likewise directs applicants to apply through the relevant opportunity rather than relying on a university career website.
Common mistakes that reduce credibility
- Using the same resume everywhere: Audit, tax, consulting, technology, deals, and risk roles reward different evidence.
- Keyword stuffing: Repetition without proof looks artificial and creates interview risk.
- Generic summaries: “Hardworking individual” does not establish role fit.
- Unsupported metrics: Never invent percentages, client counts, savings, or responsibilities.
- Incorrect job titles: Preserve official titles and clarify them truthfully rather than inflating them.
- Hiding dates or gaps: Keep the resume concise, but provide complete information when the formal application requires it.
- Overdesigned templates: Columns, graphics, icons, and tables can disrupt reading order.
- Submitting an image-only file: A visible resume is not necessarily machine-readable.
- Relying on an ATS score: No third-party score reproduces every employer’s process.
- Using AI-generated claims without checking them: Verify every date, metric, title, tool, credential, client description, and work authorization statement.
Should you use an AI resume builder or ATS checker?
Paid tools are optional. A strong manual workflow using Word or Google Docs, a plain-text editor, and human feedback is sufficient for many applicants.
- Manual workflow: Best for one or two applications, privacy-conscious candidates, students, and anyone with access to a mentor or university career center.
- Jobscan: Useful for comparing a resume with multiple job descriptions and identifying potentially missing terms. Its official page is Jobscan’s resume builder. Free features and paid pricing can change; do not treat its marketing statistics as independent labor-market evidence.
- Rezi: Useful for AI-assisted drafting, keyword targeting, and standard templates. See Rezi’s official pricing page for current plans and terms. Its claims about outcomes are company marketing claims, not proof of a Big Four interview.
- Human review: A mentor, university career office, recruiter, or professional reviewer can catch inaccurate claims, weak judgment, unclear writing, and poor narrative fit—issues an automated checker may miss.
Do not buy a product because it promises to pass every ATS, secure an interview, rank you above other candidates, or reproduce a firm’s internal screening. Prices, free limits, cancellation terms, and AI features can change, so verify the official vendor page before paying.
Final Big Four ATS resume checklist
- Targeted to one firm, office, service line, level, and job posting.
- Uses a single-column, reverse-chronological layout.
- Contains standard headings and selectable text.
- Uses readable fonts, consistent dates, and normal bullets.
- Has no essential information in headers, footers, graphics, tables, icons, or text boxes.
- Fits one page for most students and remains below two pages for most experienced candidates.
- Includes truthful keywords supported by evidence.
- Uses accomplishment bullets with scope, methods, tools, and outcomes.
- Includes relevant education, GPA, certifications, eligibility, and technical skills where appropriate.
- Protects confidential client and employer information.
- Uses the file format requested by the posting or portal.
- Has a professional filename.
- Passes the copy-and-paste plain-text test.
- Matches the information entered in the application form.
- Has been saved with the job ID and submitted version for your records.
The Bottom Line
The best ATS-friendly Big Four resume is not the most decorative or the one with the highest third-party score. It is a clean, truthful, role-specific document that a parser can read and a recruiter can quickly connect to the job’s requirements.
