How to Bridge Polkadot Assets to Ethereum

Snowbridge V2 is the current route for moving supported Polkadot assets to Ethereum. Here is how to select the route, check fees, avoid address mistakes, and troubleshoot delays.

Use Snowbridge to move a supported Polkadot-side asset to Ethereum. For a Polkadot-to-Ethereum transfer, the current route is Polkadot Hub → Ethereum. Snowbridge is a bridge, not an automatic DOT-for-ETH swap: the asset you send must be supported, and the Ethereum-side result depends on that asset’s bridge representation.

Snowbridge V2 is the current path as of August 9, 2026. Older guides covering Snowbridge V1 fees, gateway methods, fixed fee amounts, or ordered message queues should not be used for a new transfer.

Before you start

Have these ready:

  • A Polkadot wallet containing the supported asset and enough funds for the local Polkadot transaction fee and Snowbridge’s delivery fee.
  • An Ethereum-compatible wallet address beginning with 0x.
  • A clear understanding of which asset will arrive on Ethereum and whether your intended wallet, exchange, or application accepts it.

Do not paste a Substrate/SS58 Polkadot address into the Ethereum recipient field. They are different address formats. Also avoid sending directly to an exchange unless the exchange explicitly supports the particular bridged asset and Ethereum contract involved.

For a first transfer, use a small test amount. A bridge transaction is not the same as an ordinary wallet transfer, and recovery may be difficult if the recipient or asset selection is wrong.

What Snowbridge can and cannot bridge

Snowbridge connects Ethereum with Polkadot Bridge Hub and Asset Hub. It does not automatically support every token visible in a Polkadot wallet.

A Polkadot-native asset generally needs to be registered on Asset Hub’s ForeignAssets pallet, be able to teleport to Asset Hub through the required XCM route, be registered on Bridge Hub through the EthereumSystem pallet, and be enabled in Snowbridge’s interface or SDK. An asset held on another parachain may therefore need to reach Asset Hub before it can use the Ethereum route.

If the token does not appear in Snowbridge’s asset selector for the selected route, treat it as unsupported for that transfer. Do not try to substitute a contract address, manually construct a transaction, or assume that a similarly named Ethereum token is the correct destination asset.

How to bridge a Polkadot asset to Ethereum

  1. Open the current interface. Go to the Snowbridge web app. Turtle is another listed interface and provides transfer-time estimates.
  2. Reverse the route if necessary. Set Polkadot Hub as the source and Ethereum as the destination. The app may initially display the opposite direction, such as Ethereum to Polkadot Hub.
  3. Connect the Polkadot wallet. Select the source account that holds the asset. Check the account and network carefully before continuing.
  4. Choose the asset. Select only an asset exposed as supported by the route. If it is missing, investigate its Asset Hub/XCM and Snowbridge support rather than selecting another token with a similar ticker.
  5. Enter the amount. Review the unit and decimal display. Leave enough balance for both the Polkadot execution fee and the bridge delivery fee; the amount shown as available may not be fully spendable.
  6. Enter the Ethereum recipient. Use the intended Ethereum address and check every character. If you are sending to a smart contract or exchange, confirm in advance that it accepts this bridged asset.
  7. Review the fees and route. The app should provide the applicable execution and delivery-fee information for the selected route and asset. Confirm the source, destination, asset, amount, recipient, and total cost before signing.
  8. Sign the Polkadot transaction. Approve it only in the wallet you selected and only after checking the transaction details. You do not need to operate a relayer yourself.
  9. Track the message. Use the status shown in Snowbridge or the relevant Polkadot and Ethereum explorers. The Ethereum transaction may appear after the source-chain transaction has finalized and a relayer has delivered the message.

How Snowbridge V2 fees work

Snowbridge V2 does not use the old V1 approach of quoting a fixed DOT-denominated fee based on a fixed Ethereum gas-price assumption. V2 estimates fees using current pricing and Ethereum gas conditions and uses user-provided fees through newer XCM capabilities. The bridge delivery fee is standardized around ETH on both sides, while the source account still needs enough balance for local Polkadot execution.

The amount shown by the current app is the relevant estimate for your route. Do not rely on historical figures such as 1.49 DOT, 6.12 DOT, or 11.45 DOT; those were V1-era examples and are not current fee guidance.

Why a transfer may be delayed

Snowbridge relies on permissionless relayers to deliver messages between the networks. Users do not run those relayers, and completion is not necessarily immediate. A delay can also result from an underfunded transaction, a paused bridge, a failed message, or incorrect input.

V2 supports unordered message execution, which avoids the V1 situation where one blocked message could hold up later messages. It does not guarantee instant settlement. Keep the source transaction hash and the bridge message details while troubleshooting, and do not send a second transfer merely because the first one has not arrived.

Common problems and what to check

Problem Likely cause What to do
The asset is not in the selector It is not registered, not enabled in the interface, cannot reach Asset Hub through the required XCM route, or is unsupported on that route. Check the official Snowbridge asset support and integration information. Do not construct an unsupported transfer manually.
The wallet has enough tokens but the transfer cannot be submitted The account lacks the native balance needed for Polkadot execution or the bridge delivery fee. Review the fee estimate and add the required fee balance. Keep a reserve instead of spending the entire token balance.
Validation or simulation fails The constructed transfer may have insufficient funds, an unsupported asset, or another route-specific error. Do not sign until the validation or app error is resolved. For an integration, use the SDK’s validation result and logs.
The Ethereum funds went to the wrong place A wrong 0x address, an exchange that does not support the bridged asset, or confusion between a token representation and native ETH. Check the recipient before signing. Recovery depends on the recipient and may not be possible.
The source transaction finalized but Ethereum has not updated The message may still be awaiting relaying or may have failed. Track the message in Snowbridge and the relevant explorers. Do not assume a second transfer will fix the first.

For developers: the V2 SDK route

A direct integration should use the Snowbridge V2 API rather than reproducing an old V1 tutorial. The SDK exposes functions including toEthereumV2.getDeliveryFee(), toEthereumV2.createTransfer(), and toEthereumV2.validateTransfer(). The maintained example is send_ether_from_assethub_to_eth.ts.

The core flow is to identify the Polkadot source and Ethereum destination, calculate the delivery fee, construct the transfer with the correct registry decimals, validate it, and submit it with signAndSend(). A simplified shape is:

The official example uses polkadot_mainnet and Asset Hub parachain ID 1000, but those values should come from the maintained SDK configuration rather than being copied blindly into every application. Amounts must use the asset’s registry decimals; the example’s 15_000_000_000_000n value, representing 0.000015 ETH in that example, is not a universal transfer amount.

Agent creation is normally an integration task

Polkadot-to-Ethereum V2 transfers use an Ethereum-side agent associated with the source-chain location. A dApp integrating directly with the protocol may need to create that agent through the SDK or the gateway’s v2_createAgent function. End users should not call this manually unless the application specifically instructs them to. The agent identifier is derived from the source location, so hard-coding an assumed ID can create an integration error.

Can I bridge any token held in my Polkadot wallet?

No. The asset must be supported by the selected Snowbridge route and satisfy the required Asset Hub, XCM, Bridge Hub, and interface or SDK registration conditions. If it is absent from the selector, do not assume it is bridgeable.

How much does it cost to bridge to Ethereum?

There is no single current fixed fee to quote. Snowbridge V2 estimates the delivery fee using current conditions, including Ethereum gas, and your account also needs funds for the source-chain execution fee. Use the estimate displayed for your specific route and asset.

Does bridging Polkadot assets give me native ETH?

Not automatically. Snowbridge transfers the selected asset or its Ethereum-side representation. If you need native ETH, you must verify what the selected route delivers and treat any later conversion or redemption as a separate transaction.

The Bottom Line

For a new Polkadot-to-Ethereum transfer, use Snowbridge V2, select Polkadot Hub → Ethereum, verify that the asset is actually supported, and leave funds for both fees. Check the Ethereum address and asset representation twice before signing. Ignore old V1 fee tables and contract instructions.
