Start by identifying the exact layer 2 (L2) network, then read its official migration notice and check the network’s official portal for a route that supports your specific token and destination. There is no universal exit bridge or deadline. Arbitrum Nova is a current example of a network being minimized rather than fully shut down: its announced 90-day migration window ended on September 2, 2026, but the Arbitrum Foundation says the canonical bridge remains accessible. Confirm the route and current conditions in the portal before sending funds.
How to bridge assets off an Ethereum layer 2 safely
- Identify the network. Check the selected network in your wallet and compare it with the chain name in the official shutdown, migration, or support-change notice. Similar names do not mean the same bridge, withdrawal delay, or asset support.
- Open the official portal independently. Navigate from the chain’s official site or documentation, rather than a search ad or social-media link, and verify the portal’s domain. Check whether the notice gives a deadline and whether the network is closing, reducing support, or continuing with an exit route.
- Check the exact token and destination. In the portal, confirm that the token contract and the destination network are supported for the route you intend to use. Do not assume a token can move directly from one L2 to another.
- Check what you actually hold. A wallet token balance may be ready to bridge, but funds in a DeFi contract, liquidity-pool position, or other protocol may need to be withdrawn or unwound first. The process for doing that depends on the specific contract; the sources cited here do not establish a universal recovery procedure.
- Compare the full cost and dependencies. Account for gas on the source chain, gas for any destination-chain follow-up, bridge charges, and any liquidity-provider fee. A faster route may rely on a third-party provider rather than only the canonical bridge; check that provider’s current route availability and terms before choosing it.
- Review the transaction before signing. Verify the source network, token, destination network, recipient address, route, fee, and minimum amount to be received. Keep enough native gas asset on the source network to submit the withdrawal.
- Save the transaction hash and verify settlement. Follow the withdrawal through the portal or the relevant block explorers, then check that the destination balance has arrived before taking any further action.
Arbitrum Nova: what the migration notice means now
The Arbitrum Foundation’s Nova FAQ describes a reduction in Nova’s operating footprint, not a complete shutdown. Its 90-day migration window ran from June 4 through September 2, 2026, so that window has passed. The FAQ says the Arbitrum Canonical Bridge remains accessible through Arbitrum Portal, while users may have less support and fewer third-party bridging options. Because availability and supported routes can change, check the portal’s current status before transacting.
Supported Nova assets and destinations
For supported funds, the FAQ describes direct withdrawals from Nova to Arbitrum One through the canonical bridge. It gives a different route for large transfers: withdraw from Nova to Ethereum through Portal, wait through the seven-day challenge period, claim on Ethereum, and then bridge from Ethereum to Arbitrum One. The route depends on the asset and destination shown in the portal.
MOON is a specific exception: the FAQ says it has no direct Nova-to-Arbitrum One route. Its described path is Nova to Ethereum, a seven-day confirmation wait, a claim on Ethereum, and then a separate bridge from Ethereum to Arbitrum One.

Faster third-party Nova routes
For smaller or time-sensitive transfers, the Nova FAQ names LI.FI-powered routes via Relay or Symbiosis as faster alternatives, with higher fees. Those routes depend on third-party support, which may become less available as Nova’s support footprint shrinks. Check that the exact token and destination are currently available, and review the provider’s live fee and settlement terms; the FAQ does not guarantee a route will remain available.
How long does an L2 withdrawal take?
There is no single Ethereum L2 withdrawal time. The figures below are protocol or chain guidance, not independently measured averages or guarantees of end-to-end completion. Wallet, network, and claim steps may also affect when funds are usable.

| System or route | Stated delay | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Arbitrum Nova route described by the Arbitrum Foundation | Seven days | The challenge-period wait before claiming on Ethereum on the described Nova-to-Ethereum route; the FAQ’s guidance is Nova-specific. |
| Optimistic rollups, generally | Roughly seven days | Ethereum.org describes this as a general optimistic-rollup exit challenge period. Its page was last updated June 23, 2026. |
| OP Stack withdrawal flow | Seven days | The OP Stack specification describes a seven-day challenge period after a withdrawal is proven on L1 and before finalization. |
| ZKsync Chains | Three hours | ZKsync documentation states this withdrawal delay for ZKsync Chains; it is not a general timing rule for all ZK rollups. |
Optimistic-rollup exits and ZKsync withdrawals use different mechanisms. In the OP Stack flow, a withdrawal starts on L2, is proven on L1, remains in a seven-day challenge period, and is then finalized on L1. ZKsync documentation describes burning the L2 tokens, sending an L2-to-L1 message, and finalizing on the L1 bridge after message inclusion is proven. Do not apply one system’s timing to another.
A liquidity provider may advance funds for an optimistic-rollup withdrawal in exchange for a fee, as Ethereum.org explains. This changes the trade-off from waiting for the protocol withdrawal to paying for a provider-dependent route; it does not make that route guaranteed.

Can you bridge directly to another L2?
Sometimes, but only when the official portal or a currently available provider supports the exact source asset and destination. A direct route is not available for every token. If the portal does not offer the route you need, a supported path may require withdrawing to Ethereum first and then bridging to the other L2. For Nova, the Foundation FAQ specifically says MOON cannot go directly to Arbitrum One and describes an Ethereum route instead.
What if your token is not supported?
- Do not send it through a route that does not list that exact token and destination.
- Check the chain’s official notice and portal for an asset-specific migration route or instructions. Verify the token contract as well as its displayed name.
- If the asset is held in a protocol position rather than a plain wallet balance, check that protocol’s official withdrawal or unwind process before attempting a bridge.
- If no supported route is shown, contact the chain or protocol through its independently verified official support channel. Do not rely on unsolicited offers to recover or migrate funds.
Why the official exit route matters
Ethereum.org explains that optimistic rollups post transaction data to Ethereum so another node can reproduce the last state if an operator goes offline, and that users can use transaction data to create proofs of ownership and withdraw. It also warns that an operator may censor users or withhold data if the design does not make the necessary state data available. These are architectural properties, not a promise that every L2, token, or withdrawal route will remain usable during a particular migration.
