An outright bet picks the tournament winner; other markets may cover a finishing position or a head-to-head matchup. Odds show the price and potential payout—not a guarantee of winning. Before placing anything, confirm local availability and licensing, read the operator’s rules, and set a limit you can afford to lose.
How do you bet on golf?
Start by identifying exactly what must happen for your selection to win. Then check whether the wager covers one round or the whole tournament, how the odds translate into profit and total return, and what the sportsbook’s rules say about ties, withdrawals, cuts and playoffs.
- Check availability and licensing. Sports betting rules and product availability depend on where you are. Confirm that golf betting is legal in your location and that the operator is authorized there. This guide does not verify the rules for any particular jurisdiction or the licensing of any operator.
- Choose a market. Decide whether you are predicting the tournament winner, a finishing range, or the result of a matchup.
- Read the selection and time period. A matchup might be settled over one round or the full event. Do not compare prices until you know what result and period each wager covers.
- Work out the potential return. Separate profit from the stake returned, and account for the displayed odds and sportsbook pricing.
- Read the house rules and set a loss limit. Check how the operator treats ties, withdrawals and other event outcomes before placing a wager; decide in advance how much you can afford to lose.
What is an outright bet?
An outright bet is a selection of the golfer you think will win the tournament. Because a tournament can have a large field, picking the winner is difficult. A longer price can offer a larger potential payout, but it does not make the selection likely or the wager good value by itself.
The PGA TOUR’s golf betting FAQ illustrates an outright at +1000. If the selection wins, a $100 stake would earn $1,000 in profit; with the original stake returned, the total collection would be $1,100. At the same odds, a $10 stake would earn $100 profit, for a total collection of $110. These are examples of payout arithmetic, not predictions of a golfer’s chances.

What other golf betting markets are there?
Markets change the outcome being predicted. Check the precise selection and settlement period on the bet slip; market names alone may not tell you all the rules.
Finishing-position bets and props
A top-five or top-ten style wager concerns whether a golfer finishes within the stated range, rather than whether they win the tournament. The operator’s terms determine how ties at the cutoff are treated. Other props can focus on a specified event or result, so read the full market description before betting.

Head-to-head matchups
A head-to-head compares the performance of selected golfers. It may cover a single round or the whole tournament. Check which players are being compared, which scoring period counts and what happens if one withdraws or the players tie.
Live markets
Some operators offer wagers while a tournament is underway. The available selections and prices can change during play. Confirm the market’s scoring period and settlement terms rather than assuming they match a pre-event bet.
Each-way and tied-place terms
Each-way offerings and dead-heat settlement are operator-specific, not universal features with one standard treatment. If a market involves a place finish or a tie, read the sportsbook’s current rules to see how any payout is calculated.
How do odds work in golf?
American odds express a price. Positive odds state the profit on a hypothetical $100 stake; negative odds state how much must be staked to earn $100 in profit. The stake is not the same as profit, and returned stake is not profit.

| American odds | What they mean | Example profit and total return |
|---|---|---|
| +120 | A $100 stake would earn $120 in profit if successful. | At a $10 stake, the profit would be $12; the total return including the stake would be $22. This example follows the PGA TOUR odds explainer. |
| -120 | A $120 stake is required to earn $100 in profit if successful. | A $120 stake would return $220 in total: $100 profit plus the $120 stake. This example follows the PGA TOUR odds explainer. |
| +1000 | A $100 stake would earn $1,000 in profit if successful. | A $100 stake would return $1,100 in total: $1,000 profit plus the $100 stake. This is the PGA TOUR FAQ’s outright example. |
The PGA TOUR’s odds explainer also gives the +120 example: a $10 stake earns $12 in profit if successful, for $22 total including the stake. Odds vary with the event and field, and sportsbook juice is part of the price. A displayed price does not guarantee a result or establish that the wager offers value.

Sportsbooks set their own settlement terms. PGA TOUR’s 2024 responsible-betting article describes common examples: a tie around a place-bet cutoff may lead to winnings being divided under dead-heat rules, and a withdrawal before teeing off is often voided or refunded while a withdrawal after teeing off is generally graded as a loss. These are general examples, not rules that apply to every operator. Read the current rules for the sportsbook and market you are considering.

The PGA TOUR’s guidance points to field size, cut rules and playoff format as event details that can affect a selection. Check the current field and tournament rules for the event you are considering; historical format details should not be assumed to apply to a later edition. For an example of how rules differ by operator, bet365’s golf rules set out that operator’s own dead-heat and withdrawal treatment.
How much should you bet on golf?
Set a maximum loss before choosing wagers, and count all open bets toward that total. Use only money you can afford to lose entirely. Do not raise stakes because a tournament is prominent or try to win back losses with another bet.
PGA TOUR’s 2024 responsible-betting guidance says regular sports bettors are unlikely to turn a profit over the long term. Treat wagering as paid entertainment, not income. The article mentions a 1–4% unit-size recommendation, but that is its cited guidance—not a guarantee of safety, a suitable amount for every person, or a way to ensure profit. It also recommends choosing a bankroll for a timeframe, keeping units small and consistent, limiting the number and total exposure of wagers, and setting deposit or time limits.
The PGA TOUR Integrity Program Manual bars a “Covered Person” under that program from betting on professional golf events. Its definition concerns people covered by the program, not a general prohibition on fans. See the PGA TOUR Integrity Program Manual for the applicable scope.
How to compare golf bets
A shorter price does not automatically make a bet safer, and a longer price does not automatically make it better value. Compare the outcome, time period, price and settlement rules together. No market or staking approach guarantees a profit.
