There is no verified public figure for Sheffield Wednesday’s current player-only salary bill, so a precise annual or weekly cost cannot be responsibly attributed to James Bord. More importantly, Bord did not complete the takeover: the EFL said on 2 May 2026 that club assets had been transferred to Arise Capital Partners LLC. The club’s permitted player spending is subject to an EFL-agreed business plan and a two-season budget restriction.

What is known about Sheffield Wednesday’s wage bill?

The cited public material does not establish a current, player-only salary total for Sheffield Wednesday. It therefore cannot answer with a reliable figure how much James Bord would have needed to spend each week or year on player salaries.

A whole-club staff-cost figure from older accounts would not fill that gap: it may include non-playing employees, covers a past accounting period, and does not show the current first-team payroll. Companies House lists accounts through the year ending 31 July 2024, alongside later administrator filings; those records do not establish a player-only total for the subsequent takeover period. Did James Bord buy Sheffield Wednesday?

No. On 24 December 2025, BBC Sport reported that a consortium led by Bord had been selected as preferred bidder. That was a stage in a proposed sale, not completed ownership. On 2 May 2026, the EFL said administrators had concluded an agreement to transfer club assets to Arise Capital Partners LLC and that the club was no longer in administration. What controls how much the club can spend on players?

The EFL said Sheffield Wednesday would remain under a budget restriction for the next two seasons after exiting administration. It also said the club could sign players in accordance with a business plan agreed with the league, subject to that plan’s terms. This is a club-specific restriction, not a published salary allowance or a fixed amount that can be inferred from the announcement. EFL ownership statement.

League One and League Two clubs are subject to the EFL’s Salary Cost Management Protocol (SCMP), which monitors player- and manager-related costs against club income in real time. Transfer costs and income from player sales also enter the compliance calculation. That framework does not provide Sheffield Wednesday’s particular spending limit without the club’s income figures and approved financial plan. EFL financial regulation guidance.

What would a proper player-salary calculation include?

An owner budgeting for the squad would need the actual contractual commitments, not an estimate derived from an old club-wide accounts line. Relevant categories include:

  • Players’ contracted salaries and any contractual bonuses or other compensation.
  • Wage commitments that remain payable for players no longer in the squad, where applicable.
  • Costs associated with registering new players, assessed under the club’s approved plan and applicable EFL rules.

These are components a calculation may need to account for; they are not confirmed amounts for Sheffield Wednesday. Without contract data and the relevant financial plan, the public information cited here does not support a total.

What do the wage-payment reports establish?

On 3 June 2025, the EFL said charges against Sheffield Wednesday and its then owner related to failures to pay player wages on time and in full in March and May 2025. That is evidence of payment disruption at those times, but it does not state the annual wage bill, the amount needed to fund it, or the club’s later payroll.
