You can start creating user-generated content (UGC) for brands without building a large following. Begin by making a few honest sample videos, assembling a simple portfolio, and pitching brands with a specific idea. Before you film paid work, agree in writing on deliverables, payment, revisions, and how the brand may use the content.
UGC work can mean producing a video for a brand to publish or use in ads, posting a sponsored video to your own audience, or doing both. Those arrangements affect the work, compensation, disclosure, and audience requirements, so clarify them before accepting a project.
What does a UGC creator do?
UGC creators make content featuring a brand’s product or service. Common formats include demonstrations, tutorials, unboxings, testimonials, lookbooks, and skits. YouTube describes brand-deal media as branded content made with a brand and featuring its products or services; TikTok’s advertising guide includes branded content and Spark Ads among commercial UGC formats. These platform descriptions are not universal legal definitions of UGC.
The practical distinction is where the content will appear and who is responsible for publishing it:

The job may not require you to post it to your own account.
- Publish sponsored content: You post a promotional video to your own audience, typically as part of a paid or otherwise compensated partnership.
- Do both: You create the asset and publish it, or grant the brand additional rights to use it. Spell out each part of the work and the usage terms.
A brand may care about your audience and channel metrics for a partnership that involves posting. Those metrics are not a universal prerequisite for producing content assets for brands.

How do you become a UGC creator?
- Choose a credible starting lane. Pick products, services, or topics you can discuss honestly and create content about repeatedly. A focused starting point makes it easier to develop clear examples and approach relevant brands.
- Make sample videos. Create a few short pieces in different formats, such as a product demonstration, an unboxing, or a tutorial. Treat these as portfolio examples, not proof that a brand will hire you. Do not imply you used a product if you have not.
- Build a portfolio. Put your examples in one easy-to-review place. Add a short introduction, the kinds of content you make, relevant niches, contact details, and the deliverables you can offer. YouTube recommends that creators’ media kits introduce them and their audience, share useful channel-performance information, and suggest collaboration ideas. Applying that approach to a portfolio for commissioned UGC is practical guidance, not a platform requirement.
- Identify brands that fit. Look for companies whose products or services suit your chosen lane and the kind of content you can make. YouTube suggests contacting brands through their websites, reaching marketing staff on LinkedIn, or approaching brands on X. Eligible YouTube creators may also have access to YouTube Creator Partnerships.
- Pitch a specific concept. Introduce yourself, explain the fit, link your portfolio, and propose a concrete video idea. State what you can deliver and whether the brand would post it, you would post it, or both. YouTube advises creators to include collaboration ideas in a media kit and coordinate the creative concept and call to action with a brand.
- Agree on the scope before filming. Put the deliverables, video length and quantity, revisions, deadline, product shipping, posting location, call to action, payment, and usage rights in writing. No standard usage or revision terms are established by the cited guidance; negotiate the terms for each project.
- Make and review the content carefully. Follow the agreed brief, but do not make unsupported product claims or describe an experience you did not have. Add the required platform disclosures and a clear viewer-facing disclosure when the content is an endorsement or branded post.
Do you need followers to get UGC deals?
No general follower minimum applies to all UGC work. A brand commissioning a content asset can evaluate your samples and fit without requiring you to publish to a large audience. If a deal also asks you to post to your own account, the brand may consider your audience and channel performance.
Platform programs have their own eligibility rules. TikTok’s July 2026 guidance says joining TikTok One requires being at least 18 and complying with its guidelines, where the service has launched. Participating in specific projects requires at least 1,000 followers, plus other requirements that can vary by project and change over time. That project threshold is not a rule for direct UGC commissions or every kind of brand work.

How can you find brands to work with?
Pitch brands directly
Use a brand’s website contact form or look for marketing contacts on LinkedIn; YouTube also suggests approaching brands on X. Keep the message specific: share why the product suits your work, link a relevant sample, propose a content concept, and state the deliverable. If you want the brand to publish or run the video as an ad, say so rather than assuming the brand understands your offer.

Use creator programs where available
YouTube points eligible creators to Creator Partnerships. TikTok One is another possible route: TikTok says creators can register through TikTok Studio and other listed entry points, and can add starting rates, contact details, languages, and industries. TikTok One offers paid opportunities and collaboration workflows, with flat-fee or revenue-sharing payment options. Availability depends on whether the program has launched in your region, and registration does not guarantee eligibility for an individual project.

TikTok Shop affiliate eligibility is separate from paid UGC production and TikTok One project eligibility. There is no universal TikTok Shop threshold established here for every country and account type, so do not treat one program’s rules as applying to the others.
How much should you charge for UGC videos?
There is no single rate established here as a reliable UGC market average. YouTube’s official creator guidance describes several compensation approaches, not a universal rate card. Work out what the proposed fee covers before agreeing.

Ask the brand to specify the fee, payment timing, deliverables, revision limits, whether you must post, and what usage rights the brand receives. YouTube advises creators to account for costs and coordinate scripts, integration timing, and calls to action; the cited guidance does not set standard contract terms for these items. YouTube’s example amounts are illustrative and should not be treated as recommended rates or industry averages.

What equipment do you need to start?
Start with what you have if it can capture clear, usable video and sound. Plan the shot, keep the subject visible, and check that speech is easy to hear. A smartphone tripod is an optional convenience, not a requirement or a guarantee of professional results. The essential first step is making samples that show you can deliver the format you are pitching.

How should UGC creators handle disclosures and product claims?
In the United States, FTC staff guidance says a material connection includes financial relationships such as payment or receiving a free or discounted product. The creator is responsible for disclosure. The FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers says to make the disclosure hard to miss and close to the endorsement; for video, the disclosure should appear in the video, not only in its description. Use clear wording such as “ad” or “sponsored,” rather than burying the disclosure among hashtags.
Platform tools add another layer. YouTube requires creators to declare branded content in Studio when a video contains it, including when a brand partner influenced the video in exchange for something of value. YouTube says creators remain responsible for clear, prominent disclosure and compliance with local law. TikTok’s April 2026 guidance requires creators to turn on the commercial-content disclosure setting for content promoting a brand, product, or service; disclosure for TikTok One projects is managed through the platform. TikTok notes that legal requirements vary by country. Platform settings do not replace applicable legal obligations.
Keep claims truthful: do not say you tried a product if you have not, and do not repeat a product benefit without a factual basis. FTC guidance cited here is U.S.-specific; rules can differ in other markets and may apply based on where viewers are reached.
