Before you switch phones, make a separate backup of your Samsung data if you can, then transfer what you need with Samsung Smart Switch. A transfer is not a guarantee that every app, login, protected file or cloud-synced item will arrive. Keep the old phone intact until you have checked the new one and recovered access to your essential accounts.

Choose a backup-and-transfer plan before you start

Samsung Smart Switch can move data directly between phones, restore a computer backup to a new Galaxy, and use external storage where supported. Samsung describes transfers of photos, contacts, messages, files and other data. The right route depends on the devices you have, whether you want a separate copy to keep, and what connection or storage they support.

If you are trading in or giving away the old phone, a computer backup before migration gives you another recovery option if the transfer is incomplete. A direct transfer may be more convenient, but it is still a migration—not proof that the old phone has been fully duplicated. You can combine methods: create a local backup first, transfer to the new phone, and check the result before resetting the old one.

Think of the backup and transfer as two related but separate jobs. A PC or Mac backup is a copy stored on that computer for a later restore. A direct Smart Switch transfer moves selected content from one phone to another. Neither guarantees that app credentials, protected information or every item synced to an account will be included. Make a list of the information you would struggle to replace—such as important photos, work files or access to an authentication app—and verify those items individually.

Which route should you use?

Method Best suited to What to consider
Wireless Smart Switch Moving data directly when both phones are available and you do not need a computer copy. Both devices need to connect. Transfer time depends on the amount of data and connection quality; no fixed duration is guaranteed.
USB cable A direct wired transfer, or connecting a phone to a computer for backup. Device, cable and connector compatibility matter. A computer backup requires a cable that supports data transfer, not just charging.
Smart Switch on a PC or Mac Keeping a separate local backup to restore to a new Galaxy. You need a compatible computer, the Smart Switch desktop app, available computer storage and a data-capable cable.
SD card or USB storage Using external storage as an intermediate backup or transfer route. Support depends on the phone and storage device. Check the phone’s port and supported storage before buying anything.

Samsung’s US support guide says Smart Switch transfers content to Galaxy devices, not to an iOS destination. Options and supported content can vary with the connected phones, region and software version. If the new phone is an iPhone, do not assume Smart Switch is the right destination tool; check the receiving platform’s current migration options instead.

Smart Switch is free software in Samsung’s instructions. You do not need to buy an app or special cable if you already have a compatible data-transfer cable. An SD card, USB flash drive or adapter is optional and only makes sense if the phones support that storage route and you need it.

Prepare both phones and protect your account access

Do not erase, trade in or hand off the old phone while you are preparing or transferring. First make sure you can unlock it and sign in to the accounts you rely on. A phone migration can bring over data without bringing over working credentials, authentication access or every app’s private data.

  • Charge both phones and keep them available during the transfer.
  • Check that the new phone has enough free storage for the items you plan to move.
  • Have the old phone’s screen lock and the passwords or recovery methods for your important accounts available.
  • Update or open Smart Switch on the phones as appropriate, and install the desktop app if you plan to use a computer.
  • Identify apps that have their own backup or transfer process, especially messaging, authentication, financial and work apps.
  • If you use a computer route, make sure the cable supports data transfer and the computer has space for the backup.

Also check the practical connection details before beginning. For a wired phone-to-phone transfer, confirm that the cable and any adapter fit both devices and support the connection Smart Switch offers. For a computer backup, use a cable capable of data transfer; a cable that only charges may not let Smart Switch communicate with the phone. If you choose external storage, verify the connector and supported storage type on the relevant phones before buying a card, drive or adapter.

Samsung’s current Smart Switch overview, updated October 8, 2026, lists Android 4.3 and iOS 4.2.1 as minimum platform versions. Those are the requirements stated on that overview, not a guarantee that every device running those versions supports every feature. Check Samsung’s current compatibility information for your devices; support and menus can change.

Option 1: Make a Smart Switch backup on a PC or Mac

A computer backup gives you a separate local copy to restore from later. Samsung’s UK instructions, updated June 19, 2026, say to use a data-transfer-capable cable, connect and allow the phone’s connection, then choose Backup in Smart Switch. The desktop app lets you select backup items.

  1. Install and open Samsung Smart Switch on the PC or Mac.
  2. Connect the old phone to the computer with a cable that supports data transfer.
  3. Unlock the phone and allow or approve the connection prompt if it appears.
  4. In the desktop Smart Switch app, select Backup. Review the available categories and select the items you want included.
  5. Wait for the app to finish, and keep the computer backup until you have verified the new phone.

To restore that backup, connect the new Galaxy to the computer, open Smart Switch, choose Restore, select the backup if prompted, and confirm the items to restore. The names of prompts or available categories can differ by app version and device.

Before starting, make sure the computer has enough available storage for the backup. Samsung’s instructions do not establish a universal backup size, so allow space rather than assuming the copy will fit in a small amount of free storage. Keep the computer connected and do not disconnect the phone while Smart Switch is working. If the computer does not recognize the phone, check that the phone is unlocked, approve any connection prompt, and confirm that the cable supports data transfer.

A computer backup is not a substitute for checking each important app. Samsung says secure or encrypted app data, some app data and logins, and DRM-protected content may not transfer through Smart Switch. The UK computer-backup guidance specifically identifies WhatsApp chats among secure or encrypted data that do not transfer through that workflow. For messaging history or other app-specific information, follow that app’s current official transfer instructions rather than assuming the desktop backup includes it.

Option 2: Transfer directly between phones

Smart Switch supports direct transfer using Wi-Fi or a cable. The screens and exact labels depend on the phones and their software. Samsung’s support material describes opening Smart Switch on the devices, connecting them, choosing the data and starting the transfer.

Wireless transfer

  1. Open or install Smart Switch on both phones, and place the devices near each other.
  2. Start the transfer on the new Galaxy and follow the connection instructions shown on screen.
  3. On the old phone, allow the connection when prompted.
  4. Review the available categories, choose what to move, then start the transfer.
  5. Keep both phones available while it runs. When it reports completion, check the new phone rather than treating the completion message as proof that every app or account is ready.

Wireless can avoid a cable or computer, but it relies on a working connection and the time required varies with the amount of data and connection conditions. Samsung’s Caribbean support guide, updated July 23, 2026, presents wireless as a preferred option; that does not establish a fixed transfer time or mean it is best for every device pair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose wireless when the phones are both available and you prefer not to connect a computer or locate a compatible cable. If the connection does not work, use the on-screen instructions and consider the supported wired route instead. Do not restart the old phone’s setup or wipe it just because a wireless attempt stalls; the old device remains your source until you have checked what arrived.

Wired transfer

  1. Open Smart Switch on the new Galaxy and connect the old phone using a compatible cable. Use an appropriate adapter if the phone ports differ and the devices support that connection.
  2. Unlock the old phone and approve connection or access prompts.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to select the content and begin moving it.
  4. After the transfer finishes, inspect the new phone and handle app-specific migrations separately.

Samsung’s US transfer guide documents cable transfer, but compatible connections and available content vary by device. Do not assume that a cable that charges a phone can also transfer data. If the phones do not recognize one another, check the cable’s data capability, connector compatibility and any on-screen approval request before trying again.

Option 3: Use an SD card or USB storage

Samsung documents external-storage options, including backup to an SD card and transfer using external storage such as a USB flash drive, where supported. This can be useful if you do not want to use a direct phone connection or computer. It is not a universal route: the phone must support the storage type and connector, and the storage device must have adequate capacity.

  1. Check the old and new phones’ support for the intended SD card or USB storage connection.
  2. In Smart Switch, choose the available external-storage backup or transfer option and follow the prompts to select items.
  3. Safely disconnect the storage device when the app indicates the operation is complete.
  4. Connect it to the new Galaxy, open Smart Switch and follow the restore or import prompts available for that device.

Samsung’s US and Caribbean instructions describe external-storage routes, but the exact options depend on the phone. Confirm compatibility before purchasing a card, drive or adapter. If either phone does not support the storage option, choose a computer or direct-transfer method rather than buying storage on the assumption that it will work.

What may not transfer—and how to handle it

Smart Switch can move many common phone items, but its supported-content lists include exclusions and device-dependent categories. A selected transfer is not the same as a complete clone of the old phone.

  • Secure or encrypted app information: Samsung says some protected data does not transfer. Its UK PC/Mac backup guidance names WhatsApp chats in this category for that workflow. Use the messaging app’s own current official migration steps.
  • DRM-protected content: Samsung says DRM content cannot be transferred through Smart Switch. Check the relevant service or app for how to access or download that content on the new phone.
  • Some app data and logins: Certain app data, account sessions and credentials may not carry over. Open critical apps on the new phone and sign in or complete their own recovery process.
  • Apps without an equivalent: App availability differs between Google Play and Apple’s App Store. A transfer from an iPhone to a Galaxy may not install the same app if there is no Android equivalent.
  • Account-synced data: Samsung notes that synced-account data may not move through Smart Switch. It may appear after you add the relevant account to the new phone and allow syncing.

Samsung’s content guidance notes that what can be transferred depends on the connected device. If an item is missing, first check whether it is stored in a synced account, belongs to an app with a separate migration process, or is excluded from Smart Switch before repeating the entire transfer.

Keep expectations specific: Smart Switch may move a category such as messages or photos, but that does not mean every app will have its own history, settings or login restored. An account-synced item may reappear after you add the account, while app-protected data may require an independent migration. The source phone is the safest place to resolve these exceptions, so do not uninstall apps or reset the old device until you have checked the new one.

Verify the new phone before resetting the old one

Use the new phone as a working device before you decide the old one is ready to go. There is no universal checklist that guarantees every person’s data is present; focus on the information and services you would need to recover if the old phone disappeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open Contacts and confirm important people are present.
  • Review recent and older photos, messages and files that matter to you.
  • Open the apps you need every day and check that their data is available and you can sign in.
  • Confirm access to your email, cloud accounts and any authentication or recovery method you rely on.
  • Use each app’s own instructions to verify or move data that Smart Switch does not handle.
  • Keep the local computer or external-storage backup, if you made one, until you are satisfied with the new setup.

Check a few items from different points in time, not only the newest content visible on the new phone. Confirm that important files open, messages and photos you care about are present, and essential apps let you complete the tasks you need. For account-based data, verify that the right account is signed in and syncing; merely seeing an app icon on the new phone does not establish that its data or session moved.

If something essential is missing, retain the old phone and use the relevant account or app recovery process. Do not erase the source device simply because Smart Switch reported that the transfer completed.

Reset and trade in the old Samsung only after checks

Once the new phone works and important content and account access have been checked, you can prepare the old phone for its next owner. Follow the appropriate factory-reset and trade-in steps for that device and your region. The precise reset path varies by model and software version, so use the current instructions for the phone rather than relying on a menu path that may not match it.

Before resetting, make sure you have the account credentials and recovery options you need on the new phone, and that you have not left an app-specific migration unfinished. A factory reset removes local data from the old device; it is not a safe substitute for verifying the transfer first.

Samsung backup options beyond Smart Switch

Samsung lists Samsung Cloud, Google-account backup and Smart Switch as backup options for Galaxy devices. Which settings are available and where they appear depends on the phone’s operating-system version and software. Use the phone’s current settings and Samsung’s device-specific support instructions to identify what is backed up to an account and what is included in a Smart Switch copy. Cloud sync and device transfer serve different purposes: seeing an item in an account later does not necessarily mean Smart Switch copied it.

A cloud backup or sync can be useful alongside a local computer copy, but do not treat the names as interchangeable. Check which account is being used and whether the information you care about is actually available through that account on the new phone. Samsung’s support instructions do not give one universal menu path for all Galaxy devices, so use the current instructions that match your model and software rather than following a path from a different version.

Samsung’s support instructions are regional, and menu wording or backup availability can differ by country, device and software version. The guidance discussed here comes from Samsung UK’s “How to backup your Samsung phone to PC or Mac,” updated June 19, 2026; Samsung Caribbean’s “How to transfer and backup data using Smart Switch on a Galaxy phone,” updated July 23, 2026; Samsung US’s “Transfer content with Samsung Smart Switch” and “Content that can be transferred with Smart Switch”; Samsung UK’s “What is Samsung Smart Switch and how do I use it?,” updated October 8, 2026; and Samsung UK’s “How do I backup and restore data on my Galaxy device?,” updated January 8, 2026. Consult the version applicable to your location and device.

Is Smart Switch free, and do I need to buy a cable?

Smart Switch is free software in Samsung’s instructions. You do not need to buy a cable if you already have one that is compatible and supports data transfer. Charging-only cables may not work for a computer backup, and wired phone-to-phone transfer depends on the phones, ports and cable or adapter.

Will WhatsApp chats transfer with Smart Switch?

Samsung’s UK PC/Mac backup guidance identifies WhatsApp chats among secure or encrypted data that do not transfer through that backup workflow. Check WhatsApp’s current official migration instructions for the appropriate process, and keep the old phone until you have confirmed the chats you need are available on the new device.

How long does a Smart Switch transfer take?

Samsung’s cited guidance does not give a universal duration. The time depends on the amount of data and the connection. Keep both phones available while a direct transfer is running, and verify the result afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Smart Switch transfer data from a Samsung phone to an iPhone?

Samsung’s US transfer guide says Smart Switch transfers content to Galaxy devices, not to an iOS destination. If your new phone is an iPhone, check Apple’s current migration options instead. Samsung also notes that apps may not have an equivalent in the destination platform’s app store.

When is it safe to erase or trade in my old Samsung?

Wait until you have checked important contacts, photos, messages and files on the new phone, signed in to essential accounts, and completed any app-specific migrations. Keep the old phone and any computer or external-storage backup until you are satisfied. Then follow the current reset and trade-in instructions for your model and region.

The Bottom Line

For the safest switch, make a Smart Switch computer backup if you can, then transfer to the new Galaxy by wireless or a compatible cable. Treat Smart Switch as a migration rather than a full clone: check important files, accounts and app data, and follow apps’ own instructions for exceptions. Keep the old Samsung until verification is complete, then reset it using the current steps for your device.
