The money is not immediately paid to the issuer: if shares are allotted, the amount due is debited; otherwise, the blocked amount is released. UPI is a payment route within the ASBA process, not a separate kind of IPO application.
What applying for an IPO through UPI means
ASBA stands for Application Supported by Blocked Amount. With the UPI route, you place the bid through an eligible intermediary and provide a UPI ID linked to your own bank account. The intermediary sends the bid details through the exchange to the sponsor bank, which creates a mandate request in your UPI app. When you approve that request, the application amount is blocked in your bank account rather than transferred immediately.

The distinction matters: submitting the bid and authorizing the mandate are separate parts of the application. A bid entered at a broker or other intermediary is not complete merely because it appears on the intermediary’s screen. You also need to approve the correct mandate and confirm that the amount has been blocked. SEBI’s investor guidance describes this as validation of the block request; after validation, the funds are blocked and the investor is informed.
The mandate is therefore a request to reserve funds for the bid, not a payment confirmation for shares. You should treat the bid confirmation and the mandate confirmation as two checkpoints. If you have only the first, check the UPI app and application status rather than assuming that the request has been completed. Conversely, an approved mandate confirms the block, not an allotment.

The route below is for individual investors applying in Indian public issues. Issue terms, category eligibility, cutoffs and the supported channels can vary, so use the live issue’s published instructions and check for later regulatory changes.
Check eligibility and limits before applying
Use your own bank account and UPI ID
SEBI’s May 2025 FAQ on UPI in public issues says the applicant must use their own bank account or a UPI ID linked to their own bank account. A third party’s bank account or UPI ID does not make a valid application for allocation under SEBI guidance. Do not use a family member’s or another person’s ID just because you can access their phone or payment app.
The bank must be eligible to act as an issuer bank for the public-issue process, and both the UPI app and its handle must support public-issue mandates. Having a working UPI ID for ordinary payments does not, by itself, establish that it will work for an IPO. If your bank or app does not support this facility, consider direct bank ASBA through a recognized Self Certified Syndicate Bank (SCSB), or another eligible application channel.

The name on the application should be the investor’s, and the bank account or account-linked UPI ID should belong to that same applicant. The fact that an intermediary allows a UPI ID to be typed into a form does not override the eligibility requirement. If the details are not aligned, ask the intermediary about the appropriate route before submitting rather than relying on a later correction.
Understand the ₹2 lakh and ₹5 lakh thresholds
SEBI’s May 2025 FAQ states that an individual investor may use UPI for a public-issue application up to ₹5 lakh. Within that ceiling, the retail individual investor limit remains up to ₹2 lakh. Applications above ₹2 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh are considered under the non-institutional investor category, rather than the retail category. These are category and application thresholds, not a promise of allotment or a statement about how much you should bid.
An older SEBI investor guidance page describes the UPI route more simply as being for retail individual investors while also mentioning the ₹5 lakh ceiling. For the category split, the May 2025 FAQ is more specific. Check the current SEBI guidance and the particular issue’s instructions before submitting, especially if the application amount exceeds ₹2 lakh.

In practical terms, do not treat ₹5 lakh as the retail cap or assume that choosing UPI automatically places an application in a particular category. The amount and the category selected must match the live issue’s rules. If you intend to apply above ₹2 lakh, confirm that the application is being made in the correct non-institutional category and that the channel accepts that application type. If it does not, use an eligible alternative channel or seek clarification before the cutoff.
Check the issue’s rules and your application details
Before entering a bid, confirm the investor category you intend to apply under, the permitted bid and price options, the lot size, and the application cutoff in the live issue information. The sources cited here do not establish one universal cutoff time for all IPOs. The National Stock Exchange’s issue information guidance emphasizes using the live issue cutoff and applying early enough to allow for technical or system constraints.
It is useful to have the bid details in front of you when the mandate arrives. The application number, amount and attached bid information are the basis for checking that the request corresponds to the application you actually submitted. Keep the application confirmation until the process is finished; it can help the intermediary or bank identify the request if you need assistance.
How to apply through UPI, step by step
- Choose an eligible application channel. Submit through a syndicate member, registered stockbroker, registrar and transfer agent, depository participant, or an intermediary’s supported online facility. Verify that the channel accepts UPI applications for the issue and category you want.
- Enter the bid and your own UPI ID. Provide the requested bid details and the UPI ID linked to your own eligible bank account. Review the ID carefully before submitting. A typo can prevent the request from reaching you or send it to an incorrect ID.
- Submit the application and note its reference details. The intermediary uploads the bid to the exchange, which passes the relevant information to the sponsor bank. Keep the bid-cum-application number and any confirmation shown by the intermediary; you will need the application details to check the mandate.
- Open the mandate or pending-transaction section of your UPI app. Look for the public-issue request from the sponsor bank. The request may not appear in the same place in every app, so check its mandate, pending, or approval area rather than relying only on payment notifications.
- Inspect the request before approving it. SEBI says the request should show a “Verified Merchant” indication. Match the bid-cum-application number, amount, and other attached bid details to the application you submitted. If the marker is absent or any detail differs, do not approve the request until you have checked with the intermediary or your bank.
- Authorize with your UPI PIN only after checking. Enter the PIN in the UPI app’s authorization flow to approve the block request. The PIN authorizes the mandate; do not disclose it to an intermediary or another person.
- Confirm that the amount was blocked. Check the app and the application channel for a successful status. NSE identifies status code RC100 as “Mandate Accepted by Investor and amount Blocked.” Keep the confirmation and application reference until the allotment and funds release process is complete.
Use the same order each time: submit the bid, locate the mandate, verify its merchant marker and details, authorize it, and confirm the blocked-funds status. The mandate should correspond to the application, not simply to the fact that you are making an IPO bid. A mismatch in amount or application number is a reason to pause and verify, not a detail to overlook because the request arrived in the expected app.
Apply well ahead of the issue’s published cutoff rather than waiting until the final minutes. That leaves time to locate a delayed mandate, correct an entry error, or contact the original intermediary if the request fails. An application submitted close to the cutoff may not leave enough time to resolve a technical or system constraint. NSE identifies RC100 as a successful mandate-accepted-and-blocked status, so look for confirmation of the block rather than relying solely on having entered the PIN.

What happens to the blocked money
Approval blocks the application amount; it does not mean the full amount is immediately taken from your account. After allotment is finalized, the amount due for allotted shares is debited. Any excess is unblocked. If there is no allotment, the blocked amount should be released; with a partial allotment, the amount for the allotted shares is debited and the balance is released.

Check both the allotment outcome and the bank-account status. A successful mandate confirmation establishes that the amount was blocked, not that shares will be allotted. If allotment is finalized and the funds remain blocked, SEBI’s FAQ advises contacting the bank and requesting manual unblocking if needed.
For example, with a partial allotment, the relevant outcome is not an all-or-nothing debit: the amount for the shares allotted is debited and the rest is released. With no allotment, the application amount is not meant to remain blocked indefinitely after allotment finalization. Keep your application and mandate references available while checking the release, since the bank may need them to trace the block.
Common UPI IPO errors and what to do
| Problem | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No mandate arrives | Confirm that you entered the right UPI ID and that the app is up to date. Check its mandate or pending-transaction section. | Contact the intermediary that received the application and ask it to re-initiate the process. Do this before the issue closes. |
| UPI ID was entered incorrectly | Check the submitted application details; do not assume a request sent to a different ID will be recoverable. | SEBI says the process needs to be initiated again using the correct ID. Ask the original intermediary how to proceed while the issue is still open. |
| Mandate declined by mistake | Check the application status with the intermediary to determine whether a new request can be issued. | Ask the original intermediary for a fresh request before the issue closes. |
| Wrong PIN or app technical error | Check the app’s status and whether the mandate was declined. Do not treat repeated attempts as a guaranteed remedy. | SEBI says a wrong PIN or technical error can result in a declined transaction; a new request can be initiated through the same intermediary before issue closure. |
| Details do not match or “Verified Merchant” is missing | Compare the application number, amount, and attached bid details with the bid you submitted. | Do not authorize. Check the request with the intermediary or bank first. |
| Funds remain blocked after allotment finalization | Check the allotment status and whether the bank has processed the release. | Contact the bank and request manual unblocking if necessary. |
| Application uses another person’s account or UPI ID | Confirm whose bank account is linked to the ID and who is named as applicant. | A third-party account or UPI ID is not valid for allocation under SEBI guidance. Ask the intermediary about the available correction or application options before the issue closes. |
For an incorrect ID, declined request, or failed authorization, timing is important: SEBI’s guidance describes re-initiation through the same intermediary before the issue closes. Whether there is time to correct a particular application depends on the live issue cutoff and the intermediary’s processing. Do not assume that a submitted bid can always be edited or that another request will arrive immediately.

If a request is delayed, distinguish between a notification problem and an application problem: check the mandate area in the UPI app, verify the ID used on the application, and then contact the intermediary that received the bid. If the details are inconsistent, stop before approval and ask the intermediary or bank to verify the request. Do not send a PIN to someone offering to troubleshoot the issue; authorization takes place in the app and the PIN should remain private.
UPI, bank ASBA, or a linked 3-in-1 account?
UPI is one eligible route, not a requirement. SEBI identifies direct ASBA through a recognized SCSB and linked 3-in-1 accounts as alternatives for individual investors. The practical difference is where you place the bid and how the block is authorized.
| Application route | Where you submit the bid | How funds are blocked | Checks and considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPI with ASBA | An eligible intermediary, such as a syndicate member, registered stockbroker, registrar and transfer agent, depository participant, or supported online facility. | The sponsor bank sends a mandate to your supported UPI app; you review and authorize it. | Use your own bank-linked UPI ID; the bank, app, and handle must support public issues. Match the mandate details and verify the merchant marker. |
| Direct bank ASBA | Directly through a recognized Self Certified Syndicate Bank. | The bank blocks the application amount in the account through ASBA. | Confirm that the bank is a recognized SCSB and that it accepts the application for the live issue. This is an alternative if your bank does not offer UPI public-issue service. |
| Linked 3-in-1 account | Through the supported facility associated with the linked account. | The account-linked application flow arranges the block through the relevant bank process. | Check that the facility supports the issue and that the linked account and applicant details meet the issue’s requirements. |
The sources cited by SEBI identify these channels but do not establish that one is universally faster or more reliable. Choose a route you are eligible to use and can complete before the issue cutoff. If a bank does not provide UPI public-issue service, SEBI says the investor may apply by direct blocking at a bank recognized as an SCSB.

Compare the routes by the practical steps that matter to you: where the bid is submitted, whether your bank and app support the UPI mandate, how the amount is blocked, and which institution can address an error. With UPI, the mandate arrives in the app and must be checked and authorized. With direct bank ASBA, the application is made through the recognized bank and the bank handles the block. A linked 3-in-1 account uses its supported account facility. For all three, check that the channel is available for the specific issue and leave enough time before its published cutoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWho to contact when something goes wrong
Start with the institution responsible for the part of the process that failed. SEBI’s May 2025 FAQ recommends approaching the original intermediary first, then routing the issue to the bank or registrar as appropriate.
- Bid entry, missing request, incorrect UPI ID, or request re-initiation: contact the intermediary that received the application.
- Blocking or unblocking funds: contact the bank, including the bank linked to the mandate. If funds remain blocked after allotment finalization, ask about manual unblocking.
- Non-allotment or an allotment-related complaint: contact the registrar.
- Unresolved grievance: SEBI’s FAQ says to escalate to the exchange and then use SEBI’s SCORES complaint mechanism as appropriate.
When raising a complaint, have the bid-cum-application number, issue name, applicant and bank details, mandate status, transaction or request reference, and relevant dates available. Share only the information needed through the institution’s official complaint channel; never provide your UPI PIN.
Following the right escalation path can reduce repeated referrals. The original intermediary is the first contact for the application or mandate initiation. The bank is the appropriate contact for a block or release issue, while the registrar handles non-allotment concerns. If the first appropriate contact does not resolve the grievance, SEBI’s May 2025 FAQ describes escalation to the exchange and then SCORES as appropriate. Keep a record of the application reference and the steps already taken.
Final checks before you submit
- The live issue accepts your intended investor category and application amount.
- The application is in your own name and uses your own eligible bank account or linked UPI ID.
- Your bank, UPI app, and handle support public-issue mandates.
- The bid details and UPI ID are accurate, and you have noted the application reference.
- You have checked the mandate’s Verified Merchant indicator, application number, amount, and bid details before authorization.
- You have allowed time before the published cutoff for the mandate and any correction or escalation.
After submission, keep checking until you have a clear blocked-funds confirmation. Later, check the allotment outcome and confirm that the appropriate amount was debited or released. A submitted bid, an approved mandate, and an allotment are distinct stages; tracking each one helps you identify where to seek help if the process does not finish as expected.

Is UPI mandatory to apply for an IPO?
No. SEBI describes UPI as a payment mechanism within ASBA, not the only way to apply. Individual investors can also use direct ASBA through a recognized Self Certified Syndicate Bank or a supported linked 3-in-1 account.

What is the UPI limit for an individual IPO application?
SEBI’s May 2025 FAQ states that an individual investor may apply through UPI for up to ₹5 lakh. The retail individual investor limit remains up to ₹2 lakh; applications above ₹2 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh are considered in the non-institutional investor category. Check the current issue instructions and SEBI guidance.
Can I use another person’s UPI ID to apply?
No. SEBI’s guidance requires the applicant’s own bank account or a UPI ID linked to their own bank account. A third-party account or ID is not valid for allocation under that guidance.
What should I check before approving an IPO mandate?
Look for the “Verified Merchant” indication and match the bid-cum-application number, amount, and attached bid details to your application. If the marker is absent or the details do not match, do not approve until you have checked with the intermediary or bank.
What if the IPO mandate does not arrive or I decline it by mistake?
Check the UPI app’s mandate or pending-transaction area, confirm the ID used, and contact the original intermediary. SEBI says the intermediary can initiate the process again for issues such as an incorrect ID, declined mandate, wrong PIN, or technical failure, but this must be addressed before the issue closes and is not guaranteed to resolve in time.
Who should I contact if my IPO funds stay blocked?
Contact the bank for a blocking or unblocking issue. If funds remain blocked after allotment finalization, SEBI’s FAQ says to ask the bank for manual unblocking if needed. For bid or mandate initiation problems, start with the original intermediary.
When is the UPI IPO application deadline?
There is no single cutoff time that applies to every issue. Check the live issue’s published information and apply early enough to allow for mandate processing or technical constraints.
The Bottom Line
To apply for an IPO through UPI, use your own eligible bank-linked UPI ID, submit the bid through a supported intermediary, and approve only a mandate whose Verified Merchant marker and application details match. Confirm that the funds are blocked, track allotment and release, and contact the intermediary, bank, or registrar according to the problem. UPI is optional: direct bank ASBA and supported linked 3-in-1 accounts are alternatives.
