For business owners and personal-finance readers, the useful lesson is about how to evaluate a cautionary tale: separate documented events from explanations. A company’s digital partnership may be relevant to its history, but the existence of that partnership cannot stand in for evidence about its economics, execution, or role among other business pressures.

- Start with the source. A court opinion, a company filing, and a bankruptcy docket serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Keep chronology distinct from causation. An event occurring before a later failure does not prove that it caused the failure.
- Ask what is missing. A claim about digital strategy needs evidence about performance and its relationship to the company’s wider financial and operational circumstances.
- Avoid single-cause verdicts. The available records anchor important dates and statements, but do not rank the causes of Toys “R” Us’s eventual collapse.
