Before sending money to a crypto presale, verify who is behind it, what the token is supposed to do, and exactly what a wallet transaction will authorize. Guaranteed returns, pressure to act quickly, vague explanations, and unsolicited pitches are reasons to stop—not proof that an offer is safe just because its website looks polished. Crypto payments typically cannot be reversed, so the safest choice may be to walk away.

What makes a crypto presale a warning sign?

A presale invites buyers to acquire tokens before or during an early project stage. The label does not establish that a project is legitimate, that a token will be delivered, or that it will have value. Treat the offer as unverified until you can check its claims independently.

  • Guaranteed or rapid returns: Promises of easy profits or certainty are a major warning sign. Crypto prices and projects can fail; no presale can make a return risk-free.
  • Unclear explanations: Be wary if the promoter cannot explain how the project works, what the token is for, or where the money goes.
  • Impersonation: Scammers may claim that a known company or public figure is issuing or backing a token. Verify the claim through that organization’s independently located, established channels.
  • Unsolicited pitches and pressure: Social media messages, online dating contacts, unexpected calls or emails, and demands to buy immediately warrant extra caution.
  • Testimonials or a slick site offered as proof: These can be fabricated and do not verify the issuer, token, or offer.

The FTC has warned about these investment-scam tactics and recommends searching for the company or person and cryptocurrency name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint.” Such searches can surface concerns, but a lack of negative results does not prove an offer is safe. How to check a presale before paying

  1. Find the issuer independently. Do not rely only on links or contact details supplied in a pitch. Look for an official project presence and check whether the people and organization named in the offer are actually connected to it.
  2. Search for independent reporting and complaints. Search the project or person and token name with “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” If the pitch claims a well-known company issued the token, check established media and that company’s own channels, reached independently.
  3. Test the explanation. You should be able to understand what is being sold, what the token is claimed to do, how the presale works, and where the funds go. Vague or changing answers are a reason not to send money.
  4. Separate evidence from promotion. A testimonial, group-chat endorsement, celebrity image, or professional-looking website is not independent verification. Do not let a countdown or claims of limited access replace checks.
  5. Choose deliberately. You can decline, investigate further without paying, or proceed only if you can afford to lose the full amount. If key claims cannot be verified, declining is the lower-risk choice.

Protect your wallet and check every transaction

A wallet is software or hardware used to store private keys; it does not certify that a token or presale is genuine. Keep recovery words and private keys secret. Never give them to a promoter, support account, website, or anyone contacting you unexpectedly. Check links and wallet addresses through a channel you independently trust, rather than copying details from an unsolicited message.

Before signing, read the transaction information shown by your wallet. Confirm the destination, asset, amount, and any permissions being requested. If you cannot understand what the transaction authorizes, do not approve it. A request to connect a wallet is not, by itself, proof of fraud, but neither is it proof that the presale is legitimate.

A hardware wallet can keep private keys on a physical device, but it cannot authenticate a presale or prevent you from approving a dangerous transaction. If considering one, check that it supports the relevant network and token, understand its recovery method, and make sure transaction details are clear before signing. The SEC describes wallets as software or hardware for storing private keys; Trezor identifies its Safe 3 as a hardware wallet. Neither fact is an endorsement of a presale or a comparative finding that one wallet is safest. SEC staff statement, April 13, 2026 · Trezor Safe 3

Why caution matters: crypto transfers are hard to undo

The FTC warns that if funds are sent to the wrong person, a wallet is stolen or compromised, an exchange fails, or a password is lost, there may be no one able to recover the money. As the FTC puts it, “Cryptocurrency payments typically are not reversible.” FTC consumer advice

The scale of reported losses is a warning about crypto scams generally, not a presale-specific estimate: the FTC said consumers reported more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency-fraud losses from January 2021 through March 2022, including $575 million in reported losses involving bogus cryptocurrency investment opportunities. Those figures cover that historical period and should not be read as a current annual total or a measure of presale losses alone. FTC, June 2022

What to do if you suspect you were scammed

  1. Do not send more money. Stop communicating through the suspicious link or account. Be cautious of anyone claiming they can recover funds for an upfront fee.
  2. Preserve details. Save transaction IDs, wallet addresses, dates, amounts, website addresses, messages, emails, and screenshots. Keep the original records where possible.
  3. Contact the exchange you used. Report the transaction and suspected fraud promptly. An exchange may be able to document or review activity, but that does not mean it can reverse a blockchain transfer.
  4. File reports with relevant authorities. In the United States, the FTC identifies the FTC, CFTC, SEC, and FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) as reporting channels for suspected crypto fraud. Provide the preserved information and avoid assuming a report guarantees reimbursement.

What U.S. SEC guidance does—and does not—say

The SEC’s March 17, 2026 interpretation describes categories including digital commodities, collectibles, tools, stablecoins, and digital securities, and addresses how a crypto asset that is not itself a security may become subject to, or cease to be subject to, an investment contract. It does not assign every token or presale the same legal status, nor does a category label establish that an offer is honest. SEC interpretation, March 17, 2026

Separately, an April 13, 2026 statement from SEC Trading and Markets staff addresses broker-dealer registration requirements for certain interfaces that prepare transactions in crypto asset securities using self-custodial wallets, within stated transaction-parameter and disclosure limits. It is not a general certification of wallets, interfaces, tokens, or presales. These materials are U.S. regulatory context, not a decision about any particular offering.
