Watch the checkout screen as you scan, compare the item list and total with what you intend to buy before paying, and review the receipt before leaving. If you spot an error, ask the attendant or customer-service desk to correct the actual charge. Whether you are entitled to more than a correction—such as a free item or bonus—depends on where you shop, the type of error, and any qualifying rules or store policy.
How to catch a mistake while scanning
Check each item on the screen
Keep unscanned items separate from scanned ones so you can track what has gone through. After each scan, check that the screen shows one intended item and a plausible price. Self-checkout systems do not all work alike, and you should not assume the machine will detect a duplicate scan.

For produce or other items without a standard barcode, follow the register prompts and verify the selected product or PLU and quantity. If the selection or price looks wrong, pause and ask the attendant to check it.
Pay particular attention to discounts and higher-priced items
Compare sale prices and multi-buy offers with the store’s advertisement or other offer details. A promotion may not be reflected in the register system. The Federal Trade Commission’s 1998 report, Price Check II, advises shoppers to watch prices as they appear and ask for an adjustment before paying if a price is wrong. Its advice is practical, but the report’s scanner-accuracy findings are historical, not current performance rates.

What to check before you pay
Pause before completing payment and compare the on-screen list and quantities with the items you intend to buy. Look for repeated lines, unfamiliar products, a missed item, or a price that differs from the advertised offer. Review any bag, produce-weighing, age-verification, or other prompt rather than treating every displayed charge as an error.
If something does not match, ask the attendant to review it before paying. The exact screen controls and who can make a correction vary by retailer. Walmart’s Mobile Scan & Go terms, for example, tell users who cannot scan an item to consult an associate so it appears in the digital cart or on the receipt; that is Walmart-specific guidance, not a universal procedure.
How to handle a duplicate scan or wrong price
If an item scans twice
Before paying, point out the duplicate line or quantity to the attendant and ask for the extra charge to be removed. If you notice it after payment, keep the receipt and contact the store’s manager or customer-service desk promptly. Explain which item was charged twice and provide the transaction details.

Ask for the price to be checked before payment if possible. Note the item, the displayed checkout price, and the advertised or shelf price while the offer is still accessible. Keep the receipt if you have already paid. These details can help the store review the discrepancy, but preserving evidence does not guarantee a particular remedy.
If the barcode or item is wrong
A product charged under the wrong barcode is not necessarily treated the same as an advertised-price mismatch under local rules. Identify the product you actually selected or bought and the line shown on the receipt, then ask the store to correct the charge. If the store does not resolve it, check the official consumer-protection rules for your location.

Check the receipt and preserve the details
Review the itemized receipt before leaving when possible. Check for duplicate quantities, unfamiliar items, incorrect prices, and missing discounts. The FTC recommends checking the receipt even after leaving the checkout line; a store may still be able to correct a mistake later, though resolving it can take more effort.
If you find an error, keep the receipt and contact the store manager or customer-service desk. Be ready to provide:

For a pattern of unresolved scanner or pricing problems, complaint routes vary. Depending on your location, the appropriate contact may be a consumer-protection office, weights-and-measures official, or another government agency.
Does a store have to give you the item free?
There is no universal rule that a scan error entitles a shopper to a free item, discount, or bonus. A retailer may offer a voluntary scanner-error policy, while local law may create a separate remedy with specific conditions. Ask the store to correct the charge, then check the official rules that apply where you shop.
Florida
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says a business has no general legal obligation in Florida to provide an item free or at a discount because it scanned incorrectly. The agency notes that some businesses have their own policies rewarding customers for scanning errors. A store policy is not the same as a statewide legal entitlement. See the agency’s scanner-price-accuracy guidance.

Michigan
Michigan’s Scanner Law describes a possible refund and bonus for a qualifying overcharge. The Michigan Department of Attorney General says the transaction must be complete, and the shopper needs a receipt identifying the item and the price charged. The shopper must notify the seller within 30 days of the transaction. Under the page’s stated terms, the seller may owe the difference plus a bonus of ten times the difference, with a $1 minimum and $5 maximum, within two days of notice. The page also describes possible court remedies if the seller does not provide the specified refund and bonus. These conditions are Michigan-specific; consult the state’s current Scanner Error Bill of Rights for the applicable details.
Québec
Québec’s Price Accuracy Policy applies to self-serve checkout, but includes exclusions and distinctions, including certain barcode errors. For a qualifying item advertised at $15 or less, the merchant gives it free; for a qualifying item advertised above $15, the merchant sells it at the advertised price with an additional $15 discount. These are Québec-specific policy terms, not general rules for Canada or elsewhere. The Office de la protection du consommateur’s policy page explains the distinctions and how to complain if a merchant refuses to apply the policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a checkout prompt may be a legitimate charge
Not every extra line or prompt means the register made a mistake. In England, retailers must charge at least 10 pence including VAT for qualifying single-use plastic carrier bags and should ensure self-checkout collects the charge, for example by asking how many bags were used. The rule has a defined scope and exemptions and does not establish the same requirement across the rest of the UK or other countries. See the UK government’s guidance on the carrier-bag charge.
Other prompts can reflect a retailer’s procedure rather than an error. For example, Walmart’s terms describe weighing certain produce and checking age-restricted items. Read the on-screen instructions and check the receipt so you can distinguish a required step or charge from an unintended scan.
